LUCIE SWAPS WHEELCHAIR FOR DANCING SHOES BY KATE PICKLES A TEENAGER who spent six months in a wheelchair following a rare illness took centre stage in her own show on Friday. Lucie Cooper, 14, was almost paralysed when she contracted a back infection in September last year. She had been shopping with mum Julie when she complained of backache but was taken to Barnsley Hospital in agony later the same day. “She had blood tests and they whisked her straight onto a ward. “It was a very worrying time,” said mum Julie, of Midhope Way, Pogmoor. “Initially we thought it was just a back strain as she does a lot of dancing but later she was screaming in pain. “The doctors thought she had pulled her back but she had blood tests which showed it was a rare infection. The physio said she had never seen anybody with that infection where she had it.” Lucie, who attends Barnsley Christian School, spent three months on intravenous antibiotics in hospital and a
further three months on medication to fight the illness. Doctors were worried it would spread to her bones, leaving her unable to walk, if they could not get it under control. But the keen singer and dancer was set on getting better and even organised the show from her hospital bed. “As soon as she was walking again she wanted to dance. She did a little dance when the cannula was still in her arm. She was determined to do things. She recently did dancing exams with no problems and has been rehearsing for this.” She performed ‘Bring on Tomorrow’ at Birdwell Academy Theatre with other members of Take 2 Theatre Company.

FIRM’S BIRTHDAY OFFER IS THROUGH THE ROOF ROOFING specialist Fenton & Fenton is extending its anniversary celebrations to customers as the business marks yet another successful year. While some businesses have struggled to stay afloat during the recent economic challenges, Fenton & Fenton Roofing has gone from strength-tostrength, growing both its workforce and customer base to remain one of
Barnsley’s largest domestic and most recommended roofing companies. As part of its birthday celebrations this year, the family-run firm, which has three generations of roofing knowledge and 23 years’ experience, is offering customers 23 per cent off any re-roofing job. “We are fortunate to have had another successful year, the past 12 months have been our busiest period to date,”
says owner Craig Fenton. “As a thank you to our customers for their continued support and kind recommendations we want to give them something back with this unique offer which marks our anniversary.” Craig believes the ongoing success of the company is down to customers simply wanting to find a good company they can trust. “During the recession people have become much

Other services include Firestone EPDM, fibreglass and traditional flat roof systems. “We do all the work involved from start to finish,” says Craig. “We don’t use subcontractors, simply because we set very high standards of workmanship. Instead we have divisions within the organisation to deal with all aspects of roofing requirements, with individual employees trained in specific aspects of roofing work such as flat roofs, slate roofs, tiled roofs, lead works and UPVC replacements and fitting. “As a fully insured, fully qualified and fully recommended firm, customers can be assured all jobs will be completed to the highest of standards.” The Federation of Master Builders, Confederation of Roofing Contractors, Fair Trades Association, Home Pro, The Guild of Master Craftsmen and the European Builders Federation accredit all Fenton & Fenton tradesmen. The firm’s ongoing training process ensures that all employees are fully aware and stay abreast of health and safety issues. Fenton & Fenton welcome applications from fully qualified, skilled roofers.

A COMMUNITY police officer has been crowned Miss Britain in a national bodybuilding competition. Joanne Stanger, 27, of Vernon Way, Gawber, took the title at the National Amateur Bodybuilders’ Association contest. She beat other female competitors to win the best in Britain for most toned figure. “I was speechless, I didn’t expect to win. A lot of people were a lot more enhanced than I was so I didn’t think I would win,” she said. “This is my fourth year competing and my best result before was fourth in the same competition. “I had to go on stage and do my posing and quarter turns then a 90-second routine that I had to make myself.” She has to diet to strip her of any body fat and spent two hours a day doing cardiovascular workouts and weights. Now she is looking forward to competing to be Miss Universe in October where she will compete with athletes from across the globe.

DON’T STRUGGLE, “We care” HELP IS OUT THERE
Living a healthy lifestyle lowers the risk of becoming seriously ill or dying early. A healthy lifestyle allows you to enjoy more aspects of your life.
Want to Stop Smoking?
MANY carers don’t know who to turn to for support when looking after a loved-one with a terminal illness, becomes too much. With little or no time to themselves, some carers don’t have the time to find out what help is available and how to access it. Financial, practical and emotional support, is often there for the taking and can benefit not just the carer, but also the person they are caring for. As a carer, you may be entitled to receive Carers’ Allowance. You can continue getting this for up to 12 weeks if the person you care for goes into hospital and for up to four weeks if they go into a care home, provided certain conditions are met. If the person you care for dies, Carer’s Allowance will usually stop after eight weeks. Meanwhile the person you are caring for may also be entitled to: • Disability Living Allowance, if they are under 65 and need help with personal care and/or getting around. • Attendance Allowance, if they are 65 or over and need help with personal care. • Employment and Support Allowance, if they are under state pension age and have an illness or disability which affects their ability to work. There are special rules to help terminally ill people get Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance quickly and easily. Support services in the local community can relieve the pressure put on carers, enabling them to undertake dayto-day tasks, begin part-time employment or simply relax. These services can also help when the person being cared for requires specialist care or a substantial amount of looking after. Although care is often accessed through the local authority, social services may work with other agencies to provide different types of support such as day centres, home help or residential care. Day care centres can benefit both the carer and the person being cared for by giving them both a break and a change of scenery. These centres provide a range of care services for people
with different disabilities, giving carers peace of mind that their loved one is being properly looked after in their absence. Another alternative is help at home which can be received in many different ways. For the elderly, care assistants can carry out tasks like cleaning, shopping and preparing meals, while domiciliary care workers provide ‘personal care’, for example helping someone get washed and dressed. If you are caring for a terminally ill person who needs specialist medical or nursing care to enable them to continue living at home, you should be able to arrange this through their doctor. For those who can no longer cope at home, care homes, nursing homes or hospices usually provide the answer. Hospices not only provide residential units that provide care specifically for people who are terminally ill, but they also offer support to those who care for them. Sometimes hospice staff can visit people at home and are often on call 24 hours a day. It is also possible for patients to receive day-care at the hospice without moving in, or to stay for a short period to give their carers a break. For information on caring and support services visit www.direct.gov.uk
