BLOSSOM’S ON THE AIRWAVES AS RADIO RECORDS AT CASTLE BY ADAM CIVICO EXPERTS from Radio 4 programme Gardeners’ Question Time were impressed by Wentworth Castle Gardens. The show was recorded at the castle on May 4. The chairman was Eric Robson and panel members were Pippa Greenwood, Bob Flowerdew and Ann Swithenbank. While Mr Robson introduced the panel to the audience he said the azalea garden was the best of its kind. “I don’t think I will see an azalea garden of that

quality ever again,” he said. Others were equally struck. Mr Flowerdew said: “I was very impressed. It knocked me sideways.” And Mrs Greenwood said the scent from the garden was wonderful and a lovely space to enjoy the late afternoon sun. Once recording started many Barnsley gardeners were chosen to ask questions. The panel was quizzed on overgrown wisterias, barren fruit trees and whether mint could deter rats. The show will be broadcast on Friday and repeated on Sunday.

MARTIN GIVES DAD’S OLD CLUBS THE RUN AROUND BY KAYLEY WORSLEY THE son of a former Barnsley FC player raised more than £2,300 by running 74 miles around four football clubs his dad played for. Martin Beaumont, 41, ran from Oakwell to Bury FC, Stockport County and Macclesfield Town over five days. His dad, Frank Beaumont, played for Barnsley between 1957 and 1962. In his time at the club Frank, now 71, made 116 appearances and scored 41 goals. Martin, of Avon Close, Higham, took on the challenge to raise money for Barnsley Hospice and Barnsley Hospital’s coronary care to thank staff for treating Frank. He was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia last year and now has to be fed directly into his stomach. Martin said: “The experience turned out to be one of the best of my life, all the support I received from my family and close friends was truly unbelievable. “I never once was on my own at any stage.” One of Martin’s personal highlights was the lift it has given his dad. Martin said: “Dad is going through a real horrible time

at the moment with him not being able to swallow anything. “This run has given him a focus and some of his old drive has returned in helping me pull it all together. “It really was special for us all to visit his former clubs and hear some stories from his playing days.” He completed his run on the pitch at Macclesfield Town. Another fund-raising event has been organised by Martin, for the same causes. On July 1 there will be a sportsman’s evening featuring former West Hallm footballer Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock at Shaw Lane Rugby Club. Tickets for tables from Martin on 07733 002804 or go to the website: www.justgiving.com/Martin-Paul-Beaumont

Family matters: Starting at Oakwell, Martin Beaumont ran a 74-mile route around his dad Frank’s four former football clubs. Frank has aspiration pneumonia and the event raised cash for Barnsley Hospital and the hospice. (S)

Potter the swatter hits 23-ball ton BEN Potter smashed a magnificent century in just 23 balls as Hoylandswaine second XI defeated Rastrick second XI. The 19-year-old reached 110 not out from 26 balls as he smashed 14 sixes and four fours while only failing to score off one delivery. His first half-century took just 14 balls and his second 50 came off nine as Swaine made a massive 399 for four. Potter did not even go into bat until the 43rd over when Danny Hoyle was on 96 not out. By the time Hoyle had got the four runs required to reach his own well-deserved ton, Potter had already hammered 92. Earlier, Harry Howlett (53) and Chris Schofield (89) helped to set Swaine on their way. In reply, Rastrick never looked like reaching their target and finished on 190 for five. One of the wickets was taken by 13-year-old Matthew Marsh.

Calling all ladies! The Midnight Walk, Barnsley Hospice’s biggest fundraiser of the year, is fast approaching once again. Although hundreds have already signed up for the event on June 11, numbers are down on last year. The Hospice appeals to all women of Barnsley to get involved in this event and register as soon as possible. Everybody has their own reason for taking part, most simply want to show their support for a local charity, but for others there are much more poignant reasons. Alison Parr, of Pogmoor, will be participating in this year’s Midnight Walk in memory of her mum, Kathleen Littlewood, who was cared for at the Hospice in January. “Mum was referred to the Hospice because she was suffering with cancer,” says Alison. “We had planned for her to return home but her illness worsened and she passed away two weeks later. “Initially she didn’t want to come to the Hospice and I didn’t want her to either. It just felt so final and we did not want it to be, but the Hospice was far from what we expected. “Straightaway we were made to feel welcome and my mum felt comfortable and relaxed in the surroundings. “You worry care is going to be taken out of your hands but that is not the case, you can still be the main carer – I pretty much moved in when mum was here.” Alison describes the care and support given to her mum and her family as “outstanding” and says taking part in the Midnight Walk is her way of paying them back. “My eldest son was particularly close to my mum and the support given to him was amazing. That care has continued ever since. The staff have become like friends, and even now three months on, we know we can drop in any time and they will help. “I wanted to do the walk to thank the Hospice for all

it’s done for me and my family and spread the word about the many services it offers. “I will be doing the ten mile walk with friends which I am really looking forward to. It will be emotional but a great atmosphere. I would encourage others to join us. I have also written a tribute to my mum on a candle bag and look forward to seeing the path of memory lights on the last stretch of the walk.” For more information or to register to take part in the walk visit www.barnsleyhospicemidnightwalk.org

Our Pathway of Memory Lights This year to add a little more magic to our Midnight Walk there will be a ‘Pathway of Memory Lights’. Hundreds of illuminated candle bags, each displaying a personal message, will line the return route at the Events Site to guide our walkers safely back. Exciting new developments at Barnsley Hospice Barnsley Hospice has added a new member of staff to its team enabling the charity to reach more people within the Hospice and beyond. Dr Jason Boland took up the role of consultant in palliative medicine in April, a post solely funded through the Hospice. Jason, who trained in Cambridge and Sheffield and is about to submit his PhD, will work alongside fellow consultant in palliative medicine Dr Becky Hirst, who has been at the Hospice for just over a year. Both Jason and Becky specialise in palliative medicine and play a key role in the Hospice team in delivering palliative care, not only to its inpatients, but also to those visiting The Limes Therapy Centre, plus patients in hospital and at home throughout the borough. “We see patients with complex health problems and often those in pain who have a lifelimiting illness such as cancer, heart failure, motor neurone disease and emphysema,” says Becky. “As well as looking at specialist drugs for patients we provide access to non-drug services and liaise with other professionals to get each patient the best possible care.” It is hoped that having two consultants will allow the Hospice to reach more patients throughout the borough particularly in areas it is currently struggling to reach such as the Dearne Valley. “I am really pleased to have joined the team at Barnsley Hospice,” says Jason.“I’m impressed by how forward thinking the Hospice is, how great the team is and how the chief executive Ian Carey has managed to keep funding and services going despite the recession. “I’m now looking forward to getting to know the patients and Barnsley area better while working alongside Becky.” And Jason is not the only new addition to Barnsley Hospice, its therapy centre, known as ‘The Limes’, has recently undergone a full refurbishment creating a fresh, vibrant and welcoming environment for patients and visitors. The work was completed following a department of health grant enabling the Hospice

to transform the previous tired day centre into a bright and airy seating area and conservatory dining area, both of which open up into a new garden complete with decking and relaxing water features. “We want to dispel the thought that a Hospice is a depressing place,” says patient services manager Diana Gibson.“Barnsley Hospice has a very happy and friendly

atmosphere and many of our inpatients do return home. “Following the refurbishment of The Limes we have re-launched and extended our services to include two drop in days plus support and therapy days.We are also looking to develop a bereavement support group and taking on another occupational therapist to help more patients return home.

“We offer help with symptom management, support those coming to terms with the news they have a life-limiting illness and offer support to a patients’, their families and friends. “We are constantly reviewing the needs of patients and it is our responsibility to meet health needs of the community but as a charity we too need support to continue providing such vital services.”
