RESIDENTS STILL HAVE HUMP OVER STEEL SLAG

Guides scout for girls MEET the loneliest Girl Guides in Barnsley. Billie Baker and Loren Sidebottom, both ten, are the only members of Dodworth Guides. Leader Kirsty Roberts opened the unit this month, but if it is to carry on she needs more members. She said: “We have a actionpacked programme planned. We have plans to take them to a national guide pop concert in London in October, which in the past has featured top artists including JLS, scouting for girls and Pixie Lott.” The group is open to girls aged ten to 13, and not just those from Dodworth. They meet Tuesday evenings at Dodworth Methodist Church. Contact Kirsty on 243149 or dodworthguides@hotmail.co.uk

A PROBLEM with unwanted bumps that erupt in the road has hardly improved in two years. About 40 roads in housing estates built in the 1980s and early 90s are blighted by expanding steel slag aggregate, a by-product of the steel industry, which was used as a cheap surfacing material. The material was considered acceptable at the time but as it expanded over the years it began causing random mounds like speed bumps. The council has been left with the problem and does not have the money to fix it. Two years ago, the Chronicle obtained a list of the affected roads. Since then only one of the 40 has been resurfaced – Heather Knowle, at Dodworth. The council says the other roads remain safe to use despite the bumps. It does ‘safety only’ repairs where bumps are considered dangerous. Barbara Hunt, of nearby Lambert Fold, Dodworth, says the bump in front of her house is dangerous even though the council says otherwise. “They call it ‘Barbara’s Hump’. It is really bad. We’re on a hill, so in the winter when it’s icy, people can’t get over it. When they do, they often scrape the bottom of their cars.” Last year some residents mounted a campaign by taking it in turns to telephone the council every day to complain. Darren Richardson, highways director, said: “At present the council will spend between £50,000 and £100,000 each year on safety-related repairs from its reactive maintenance budget. This will continue until consideration can be given to allocate money from the capital budget in future years.”

Date set for college strike STRIKE action over redundancies at Barnsley College is expected to start on June 13 unless an agreement is reached. Members of the University and College Union have been balloted over plans they claim will make 30 lecturers redundant in addition to the 20 taking it voluntarily. They say the cuts will slash a quarter of the teaching workforce, leading to larger class sizes and fewer teaching hours. The union said redun-

dancies would only affect lecturers and claimed two managers who applied for voluntary redundancy were turned down, which they say would have saved £100,000. “We are balloting for strike action but hope strikes will not be necessary because the college will agree to drop the threat of compulsory redundancy,” said branch secretary Dave Gibson. “We estimate the college has already saved more than £1m from its staffing

budget for next year by voluntary severance.” Jobs are being axed as college bosses anticipate the government will cut 30 per cent of its budget over four years. Unions claim the sixth form will lose more than a third of lecturing staff with 16 posts expected to go. Spanish, environmental science and economics A-levels will be scrapped. Departments including engineering, art, graphics, catering, hair and beauty and tourism will also be affected, they claim. Students called for principal Colin Booth to resign. The strike action ballot results will be announced today with strike action likely to start next week if no resolution is agreed. UCU regional official, Julie Kelley, said strike action was a last resort but UCU members had been left with little choice.

WHY COUPLE REALLY FACEBOOK SALLY Foster reckons she’s about to become Barnsley’s first ‘Facebook mum’.

Fabulous news: Sally and Terry Foster who are looking forward to the arrival of their Facebook baby.

She met husband Terry, 29, on the social networking site and they married two months later. Now the couple of Beaumont Avenue, Barnsley, are expecting their first child and say the website is to thank. “We are both really excited,” said Sally, 34. “I wasn’t sure I would be able to have children because I had polycystic ovaries so I was thrilled when I found out. “Terry is looking forward to being a dad and he’s great with his nieces and nephews. When we counted back we realised it was a honeymoon baby.” Theatre nurse Sally is expecting the new arrival on July 9 and promises to put pictures online when she gets home. “I can’t believe it really. If I hadn’t met Terry on it I wouldn’t be married and having a baby. “It’s nice how it has all happened and we have Facebook to thank.”

“The course has allowed me to try all of the different types of art and design modules before deciding the one that I am better at and enjoy the most, which has turned out to be resistant materials and jewellery design and making. The teaching staff are really friendly and will do whatever they can to assure your time at University runs smoothly. They are extremely helpful and are good at explaining tasks and staggering deadlines to make sure we don’t get too bogged down with our workloads. It is clear that the tutors have a vast amount of experience in what they do and teach and this is reflected in our results. When I graduate I hope to do a PGCE in design technology teaching secondary school students. Alongside teaching I would like to build up my own workshop to allow me to make my own jewellery which I could then sell at craft fairs and perhaps online.” Heidi Bland, Interdisciplinary Art and Design BA(Hons)

Hill’s hit list may contain some surprises BARNSLEY’S new manager Keith Hill is looking to move swiftly to land new players. “I do need to bring in a few players, probably six or seven,” he says. “We need to have strength in depth.” He admitted that ‘one or two’ signings may come as a surprise to supporters. He also would not rule out raiding his former club Rochdale, but pointed out: “I’m not going to start naming the players I would like to bring to the club. “I’ve seen players of excellent ability playing in non-league, League Two and League One, as well as in the Championship and in the Premier League. It is all about getting in the right ones for Barnsley. “We have quality in the squad already here – and quality in the youth. The core is there, but my job is

If they don’t I am honest enough to hold my hand up and say I got it wrong.” Another of Hill’s top priorities is to try and persuade skipper and Player of the Year Jason Shackell that his future lies at Oakwell. The Reds have already rejected two offers from Derby County – and Hull City are also ‘sniffing around’. It is thought that Shackell

may be looking to move on. Hill said: “I’ll be having a chat with Jason to see what he’s thinking. He’s an ambitious lad, but I’ll be trying to get across to him our vision for the club. We will just have to wait and see.” Hill’s commitment to playing attractive football and his ability to work on a limited budget have marked him out as a rising managerial talent. Two seasons ago Hill, 42, steered Rochdale to their first promotion since 1969. He then guided the club to ninth in League One last term.
