Brave sport: Dr Joanne Willoughby with her awards.

Courage award for skier BY KATIA HARSTON A CHAMPION skier who showed bravery and courage to overcome her disabilities has been voted the Yorkshire Woman of Achievement. Joanne Willoughby, 36, is paralysed from the chest down, has lost her left leg and part of her left hand, has limited movement in her left arm and is blind in her right eye, but is the country’s best disabled skier. Joanne, of Staincross Common, Staincross, also received the Woman of Courage award. She was paralysed at 12 by an illness called transverse myelitis which attacked her spinal cord and left her unable to move anything but her eyes for years. “I didn’t go to school after the paralysis but two weeks before my GCSEs I decided to sit them, and got seven. College wouldn’t take me because of my

disability so I taught myself my A-levels. I had to wait three years to go to university because they couldn’t accommodate for my disabilities. But I got a first-class honours degree and went on to do a PhD and taught at Leeds University.” Joanne decided to ski to challenge herself physically. “I took up sit-skiing and got into the British disabled team and became the European and British female sit-ski champion.” Her life took another terrible turn when she suffered a blood clot. “I was set to go to the Paralympics but the clot in my leg blew my leg up five times its normal size and I had to have it amputated. But within weeks of leaving hospital she was back on the snow learning to ski again and has returned to top-level competition, winning the Canadian championships this year.

BY MIKE COTTON THE number plate ‘TYKES BFC’ is causing a stir in a Canadian town. Eric McLain, 61, who emigrated from Barnsley to Canada 30 years ago, bought the plate for his new car last year. It cost $250, about £150. “It’d have cost a lot more than that here,” said Eric, who’s visiting family in Barnsley. “But then I suppose there’d not be that many people wanting it in Canada.” Eric is still BFC mad and can watch a couple of games each season on Canadian TV. He said there was more interest in Barnsley FC after the famous FA cup run in 2008, when they beat Liverpool and Chelsea. At the time he had a ‘Tykes’ sticker on the back of the car, and when his wife Carole came out of the store one day, two men were waiting by the car. “She was worried at first, then they said ‘are you from Barnsley?’ I think they’d been waiting for quite a while.” It turned out one had a mother who was born in Barnsley, and the McLains invited her around for tea. They live in a town called Whitby, near Toronto. They used to live on

“As a satisfied customer of your service and products, I have no hesitation in recommending your company to anyone…”

Plate fame: Canadian couple Eric and Carole McLain and the plate, right. Upper Sheffield Road but left when Eric was offered a job at a packaging firm in Canada. The company later

became part of Cadbury’s, and he left when Kraft took it over last year.

WORKERS DEVASTATED AS DIY STORE GOES UNDER DIY store Focus is shutting after the company’s administrators failed to secure a buyer. All 17 staff at the Peel Centre shop are expecting to lose their jobs. Some have worked there for more than 20 years. One told the Chronicle:

“We’re absolutely devastated. The owners have got a lot to answer for. “There’s some very loyal, hardworking staff here, but I think we’ve been lions led by donkeys. “We’re being kept in the dark. “We still don’t know when it’s going to shut, or how long we’ve got a job.

“I suppose we’re still just hoping someone will come along and buy it.” Another said: “It didn’t really hit home until I came in and saw all the ‘closing down sale’ signs. We didn’t put them up, they sent someone in to do it. That wasn’t nice to walk in to.” Staff said the store was much busier than usual as people looked for a bargain. “I can’t help thinking if they’d knocked 20 per cent off a few months ago, we might have been busier and we might not be in this situation now. “Some of the customers have been awful to us.

Fabulous four take shot at Macmillan golf challenge FOUR golfers from Barnsley will test their endurance by playing four rounds of golf in a day for charity. Keith Earl, Gavin Earl, Steve Shone and David Lockwood are taking part in Macmillan’s longest day golf challenge. They will tee off at Silkstone Golf Club, where two of them are members, on June 20.

Some are very nice, but we’ve had people shouting and swearing at us, saying we should be knocking more money off.” The store opened in 1985 as Great Mills, and changed its name after Focus bought the chain in December 2000. It went into administration earlier this month, and then this week it was announced a buyer had not been found and the firm would be liquidated, with a loss of 3,000 jobs. Rivals B&Q, Wickes and B&M have bought 55 of the 178 stores, but there is no buyer so far for the Barnsley branch.

“It involves playing four rounds of golf in one day which means walking 20 miles and hitting over 300 shots,” said Keith. “Dave is setting of at 2am to run a half marathon before the challenge, he will get dropped of 13.1 miles from the golf club and run there.” To sponsor them visit http://original.justgiving.com/keithearl

MP REQUESTS ROYAL VISIT FOR TOWN BY MIKE COTTON THE Prince of Wales will make his first visit to Barnsley next year if the town’s newest MP has his way. Dan Jarvis has met the prince several times and this week wrote inviting him to reopen the town hall once its conversion to a museum is complete. He said: “In 1933 the town hall was opened by the then Prince of Wales (who became King Edward VIII) and I think it would be great for the town if the current Prince of Wales comes and reopens it next year. “I’m going to do everything I can to bring him here.” The prince is commander-in-chief of the Parachute Regiment, and the former Major Jarvis accompanied him on his visit to Normandy in 2000 to commemorate the Normandy landings. They have met on other occasions. “As far as I am aware, and I am reli-

Appeal for Polish history POLISH people in Barnsley are being asked to share their photographs and memories at Barnsley library on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. The aim is to bring together Polish immigrants and their descendants who moved to the area after the Second World War, to reminisce and share their stories so they can be included in the new museum in the town hall.

ably informed, the Prince of Wales has never been to Barnsley. I am quite hopeful that he will see this invitation as a good opportunity to come. “I think it will be an event that brings the town together. “I know there has been a lot of debate about the money being spent, but I think the town hall is an important part of our town centre, an historic building, and personifies much about what is good about the town. A Clarence House spokesman said there was no record of Prince Charles ever visiting Barnsley before, although electronic records only go back to the 1980s. Barnsley Council chief executive Phil Coppard said: “We are grateful to Dan for his efforts. “We are keen for the Prince of Wales to visit Barnsley and the reopening of the town hall might be a suitable opportunity, but it will depend on the royal schedule.”

Max honoured with award for work fighting against racism A LIFETIME achievement award was presented to council officer Max Senior in recognition of his work to fight racism. He came across racism while working as a housing officer in Rotherham and set up a service to tackle the problem. In 2000 Max, who turned 65 yesterday, came to Barnsley Council to head a team. He says he is passionate about battling racism and prejudice and is going to continue working part-time. The Barnsley Gujarati Association held a health event at the Metrodome

and surprised Max by giving him the award. It was presented by police chief Andy Brooke. Max said: “I was gobsmacked and felt proud and humbled. It was lovely.” He said Barnsley had changed rapidly. Ten years ago less than one per cent of the population was from an ethnic minority – today it is almost four per cent. “There has been a rapid change and people don’t like change. Trying to get people to understand there is nothing to fear is very difficult.” Despite the influx there had been a slight drop in

the number of racist incidents reported, he said. Mayor Coun Karen Dyson attended Sunday’s event and helped with the symbolic breaking of a coconut. Harshad Patel said the coconut ceremony was to bless the event. Fine work: Max Senior.
