Geoff seeks clues about his medal

Neill steps in to save £1m A BARNSLEY man has saved the Royal Academy of Dance more than £1m. Neill Summerfield, 49, who was born in Gawber but spent most of his childhood in Monk Bretton, was called in by the charity to reduce the impact of rising costs and falling incomes at the height of the recession. The work of Mr Summerfield, who runs a franchise called Expense Reduction Analysts, led to savings on things like office supplies, postage and electricity. He set up the franchise in 2006 and has completed his 200th project for clients. Mr Summerfield was educated at Holgate School and did European Business Studies at Trent Polytechnic Business School, Nottingham. The course involved him spending a year in Germany. After a spell with a company in Essex, he worked for Drum Engineering, Bradford, between 1989 and 1996. He worked for Rocol Lubricants in Leeds between 1996 and 2002 and had a spell with Firth Rixon, a manufacturer of aerospace engine parts for Rolls Royce.

STATION INFERNO BRINGS OUT COMMUNITY SPIRIT A ‘BLITZ’ community spirit was brought out by the blaze at Brampton Fire Station, according to one evacuated resident. Alan Smith, 57, of Knollbeck Crescent, Brampton, sped home from his job at Dearne Valley College at about 3pm on July 25 when he heard about the fire, which police say was arson, and had to spend the next six hours outside as it raged on his doorstep. Householders were evacuated from six houses but he said the experience brought out a strong sense of community in the residents, who pitched in to ensure he and his wife were looked after. He said: “The village and our neighbours were very good to us – they fetched our labradoodle water and everybody came and looked after us. “One person offered a bed for the night, people let us use their toilet and even fetched chairs from their houses so we had somewhere to sit. It was like the wartime blitz – a real community spirit.” Alan said he first heard about the fire when his wife telephoned him at work to tell him she could see smoke coming from the station.

“I rushed out of work and left my car on Cliffe Road to find a blazing inferno – it was such a shock to come home and find that in front of you. I got our other car out of the garage and parked it up on Knollbeck Crescent, then the fire service knocked on our door and screamed ‘evacuate now’. “After that I had a fireman on my drive for four hours hosing the house down. The wife said our conifers caught fire at one point but they made sure they put that out. I can’t praise the fire service enough for limiting the damage to our house.” Alan said fire-fighters wanted to move him to temporary accommodation but he refused to leave his home and was allowed back in at about 8.45pm that night. Coun Denise Lelliot, who manages the Cortonwood Comeback Centre, said the event, though sad, brought the community together. She said: “There were some people complaining but I think most people took it in the spirit of the event. I don’t think there was much negativity about and, for some people, it was an excuse to speak to people they wouldn’t normally talk to – it definitely brought people closAblaze: The former Brampton fire station. er.”

Sheep thrills: Competitors try to bleat the rest at the Cannon Hall Farm. Picture: Brett Carr.

CAWTHORNE FARM STAGES BAA-RMY SHEEP RACING EWE don’t see that everyday. Cannon Hall Farm has come up with the baa-rmy idea of holding daily sheep races in a former paddock. Sheep trainer David Nicholson has been working hard with the flock to get them running enthusiastically and said they are ‘jumping like stags’. Farm director Richard Nicholson said they make great racers because they are motivated by food. “They are quite keen to run when there’s food involved and get a treat at the end of it. “We saw it on YouTube and decided we

would take it to the next level. “We’ve trained 25 to run around the circular course.” There are five races each day with live commentary and visitors to the farm can pick a favourite to make it to the final furlong. It's an action-packed race as the sheep have to overcome fences like Bechers Brook, The Chair and Canal Turn. The races will run until September 4 between noon and 1pm. Visitors who pick a winner have a chance of winning a family ticket for the farm.

Survey and fun day A FAMILY fun day is going to be held in Thurnscoe. A survey will also be carried out at the fair to find out thoughts and problems in the area. The event will provide a wide range of entertainment and activities. Bouncy castles and children's dinners are among the festivities provided. The fun day will be held at Houghton Road sports field on Wednesday August 10.

Shaun clicks with training company

Geoff searches for clues about mystery medal

RECRUITMENT and training company ZootAlore! has appointed Shaun Dillon to maintain its websites. Mr Dillon, 22, has an HND in multimedia technology from Leeds Metropolitan University and has worked in retailing and as a self-employed musician.

He hopes to move to Barnsley from Scunthorpe. ZootAlore! is at Barnsley Business and Innovation Centre, Wilthorpe, and works with government bodies, youth organisations and industry to help young people get jobs and training.

DO YOU recognise this medal? Geoff Hayes, 61, of Mottram Street, Barnsley, found it a few years ago in a tin of ‘odds and sods’. The inscription is ‘Barnsley Elementary Schools AA BB Sports Cup winners 1921 1922'. It came from his late mother's house, but Geoff has no idea about its origins. “It might not be a family thing” he said. “My dad was born in 1919 so it can't have been anything to do with him. He was a few years older than my mother. I've had it a few years and I've always said 'I'll take it down to the Chronicle one day and see if anyone knows anything about it.” Geoff said he would be happy to donate the medal to the Experience Barnsley museum, but would first like to find out something about it. WHY PAUL WILL SNACK ON TREK A MAN with no stomach will have to stop every few miles for a snack when he takes on a 192mile coast to coast walk. Paul Linstead, 60, of Vernon Road, Worsbrough, was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder two years ago. He was healthy at the time, but the gene meant he had an eight per cent chance of getting an aggressive form of cancer, which has killed several family members, so had surgery to remove his stomach. Since then, he has been full after a few mouthfuls, because his throat leads straight to his intestines, and has to eat little and often. He and his two nephews, Lee and Camden,

who’ve had the same operation, Paul’s wife, Karen and two others are walking from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay to raise money and awareness. Paul said: “I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and I have to be careful that I get enough calories. We’re going to have some pretty gruelling days on this walk. We’ll have to stop for snacks every so often.” He’s expecting the route to take 13 days. Money raised will go to the ‘No Stomach for Cancer’ charity and Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, which is doing research on Paul. Sponsor forms are available through Barnsley Rugby Club, Shaw Lane, where Paul is a member.
