2 Top goalie a real catch for squad BY ADAM GUEST SOUTH YORKSHIRE football is in safe hands thanks to a promising Kirk Balk pupil. Goalkeeper Liam Massey has made it through to the South Yorkshire Under-16s’ squad. He went for trials after playing for Barnsley Boys and has pipped about 15 hopefuls to the number one jersey. Liam, 15, said: “I’m very proud. I started playing when I was three, I have always been a goalkeeper.” Liam also plays for Sheffield team Stocksbridge Park Steels on a Sunday. Luckily for him there won’t be a clash of fixtures. He added: “We are playing on Saturday October 15 against Durham. My teachers are really proud.”

Rev Trevor needs to raise £15k

MUM’S TERRIFYING ORDEAL AS HER BABY ARRIVES EARLY A MUM was terrified her baby would die after he was born on a toilet floor with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. Bobby Jewitt was not breathing when Victoria, 27, gave birth to him at home two weeks ago. She had been having regular contractions when husband Darrell took her to Barnsley Hospital on September 20. But she said hospital staff told them to come back when her labour was more advanced. The mum-of-three had just got home when her waters broke and Bobby arrived minutes later. “Our first reaction was what do we do? Obviously none of us had any midwifery experience. I was scared to death and so were my husband and mum. “I had just got home when my waters broke and I rushed into the downstairs toilet. He came out so quickly he banged his head on the floor. “He didn’t cry and he wasn’t breathing. I shouted to mum saying she had to get the cord

from around his neck. It was terrifying. If it wasn’t for them then I don’t know what I would have done. He could have died.” Darrell, who works in waste management, telephoned an ambulance and cut the cord. Paramedics arrived to their home on Kings Road, Wombwell, within minutes and took them to hospital. Victoria said she was put in an antenatal ward rather than the maternity ward and was left on her own. “There wasn’t even an apology when I got back the hospital. They didn’t seem to know what to do with me. I was put on a ward on my own and they were meant to check on me every hour but they didn’t.” Bobby, who weighed 8lb 9oz, was given a clean bill of health and they were discharged the following morning. But Victoria, who had her other two children at Jessops Hospital, Sheffield, said the experience had left her traumatised. “I think the care that I have had has been absolutely disgusting. Luckily it had a happy

ending but I don’t want any other expectant mother to go through what I have.” Sue Gibson, head of midwifery at Barnsley Hospital said: “We make every effort to ensure women are assessed and able to spend the early part of labour at home, then deliver safely in hospital. “Where a mum-to-be is not in ‘established labour’, then, in line with national best practice, we encourage her to return home and phone us straight away if the situation changes. This only ever happens where our midwives and the mum agree. Some babies, however, do arrive quickly once labour starts. Postnatal and antenatal care is given in the same area on our maternity unit, where our midwives observe both mum and baby. We are sorry Mrs Jewitt feels her care with us was not up to our normal high standards and would encourage her to contact our patient advice liaison service so we can investigate her concerns.”

New addition: Vicky Jewitt and Bobby.

BID TO TURN HOUSES INTO REAL HOMES BARNSLEY churchgoers have helped more than 75 former homeless people to set up home with a scheme started a year ago. The Barnsley starter packs project collects items including bedding, crockery, kitchen utensils, pans, cleaning products and toiletries for vulnerable people across Barnsley. It was established by Church Action on Poverty for anyone moving into a new home without these essential items. Churches Together chairman Pat Punt said churchgoers from all over the borough had been taking part in the collections. “Lots of individual churches in Barnsley have been doing it and the churches together groups in Penistone and Hoyland,” she said. “It provides for people who have been homeless and allocated a property. They move into a property but what they have

is a house and four walls rather than a home. “We want to help them turn their house into a home. “People think that the homeless get all this grant money given to them but most are given very little or no help in acquiring the most basics of household goods.” Curtains, soft furnishings, baby and nursery equipment, children’s books, toys, puzzles, and furniture have also been collected. “We only accept stuff that people would be willing to use themselves so it’s all good quality. It might be things that people were going to throw out so it’s a great way of recycling too.” Referrals are made by housing officers, support and resettlement staff, social workers and health visitors who then pass the donations on to those in need. They are held every two years for those working in, or retired from, the police and fire services, as well as prison, customs and excise officers. The 69-year-old, of Darton Lane, joined more than 18,000 competitors from 60 countries to take on rival gunmen. Barry, who has been shooting for more than 50 years and still teaches cadets, said it is ‘born and bred’ in him. He said: “The games are the second largest after the summer Olympics and I

Champ: Barry Johnson with his grandson Daniel Johnson. Picture: Scott Bairstow took my grandson Daniel with me who celebrated his 18th birthday out there. “There are lots of disciplines in shooting and I did the small bore rifle, shooting about 50 yards, and the large bore long distance shooting some 60 yards. “While we were out there Hurricane Irene was happening which affected

the games, particularly the outdoor events which had to be cancelled. Everywhere just came to a standstill.” But even a hurricane couldn’t put Barry off his stride. He entered the small bore rifle team event and won bronze and took silver in the long distance large bore rifle event. But it was winning gold

in the large bore individual round which made his day. “My grandson has never seen me shoot before and couldn’t believe it either when I won gold. “I don’t know who was more surprised because I know I fought well for it but didn’t think I would win it. The older you get the harder it gets.”

COUNCIL RELUCTANTLY AGREES TO FREEZE TAX BY MIKE COTTON COUNCIL tax will be frozen next year, the leader of Barnsley Council has told the Chronicle. Coun Steve Houghton said Barnsley would take up the government’s offer to subsidise a council tax freeze. But he warned it was storing up more problems further down the line, and questioned where the money was coming from.

“They’ve found £800m to do this, on top of another £250m to start messing about with bin collections again. “When they’ve managed to find a billion pounds at the same time as thousands of people are losing their jobs, I think a lot of people will question that.” The freeze works by giving an extra grant to councils who limit their council tax rise to 2.5 per cent. The government gives the coun-

it leaves us with a shortfall if they stop doing it.” If the government does end the scheme, in the third year it would leave the council needing to either put council tax up by 7.7 per cent, or make extra cuts. “In reality, they wouldn’t let us put it up by 7.7 per cent, and we wouldn’t do that. It essentially means extra cuts to jobs on services, on top of the £46m cuts we’ve already had to make.”

£4.8M PLAN TO REVAMP THE PRIORY CAMPUS BY KAYLEY WORSLEY PLANS for a £4.8m project to extend and refurbish a community facility in Lundwood are awaiting funding approval. The Priory Campus project includes a 25,000-sq ft annexe and a multi-use games area. The campus, which is run as a charity, has applied for a £2.4m commercial loan from Barnsley Council, which is yet to get final approval. A grant application for the

remaining £2.4m from the European Regional Development Fund is also being processed. John Marshall, head of operations, said he hoped to know funding was in place by the beginning of 2012. The aim is to open the development in March 2013. The development already has planning permission for the annexe, car parking off Rotherham Road and a multi-use games area. John said the campus had changed what it offers to the community since opening in 1995, yet

the building had not been updated in that time. He said: “We are currently at the full procurement stage. We want the fabric of the building to be flexible to the community’s needs. “Inside we have a flexible community resource that supports whatever the community wants. We need to spend money to bring everything up to date. It’s all very exciting.” The campus houses a GP surgery, meeting rooms and spaces for other organisations. The new annexe will provide more space for the GP surgery, cre-

ate a dispensary, another function room and further meeting rooms. John said they plan to use space by starting a social enterprise scheme, helping people gain jobs and boost youth employment. He said this was a huge need in the present economic climate and it is a way of reacting to the community’s needs. The multi-use games area will also offer an extra facility for residents. The project also includes refurbishment of the current building and new equipment allowing for facilities like video conferencing.

FUND-RAISING MISSION AS STEEPLE COSTS SPIRAL CHURCH members are hoping to raise up to £15,000 for repairs to the steeple. St Thomas and St James’s Church, Worsbrough Dale, has suffered erosion on part of its spire and the vicar, Rev Trevor Keightley said work was needed on part of the 150-year church before it got worse. “It’s the first top six metres of the spire that are suffering the effects of erosion,” he said. Fund-raising has began for the church on Bank End Road but members are still a way off their target. A signed Barnsley FC football, won by Mr Keightley at Penistone

‘It’s the first top six metres of the spire that are suffering the effects of erosion’ Show, will be raffled again for church funds. Other ideas include a cardboard spire with a pound coin needed to represent each of its 120ft. “It’s not unsafe at the moment but it’s something that needs to be done to make sure it doesn’t become unsafe.”

Cadets launch appeal for bus AN appeal is being launched by Barnsley Sea Cadets to buy a new minibus, allowing them to continue offering a range of activities. Next year the cadets will mark their 70th anniversary and will be taking part in a number of fund-raising activities. For many cadets the opportunity to attend a week’s training course is often the only week away they get. Without a bus it is virtually impossible

to get large groups of cadets to events. The bus would also be used to transport members of the Royal Naval Association to veterans’ parades. One of the fund-raising events it will be holding next year will be a charity sky dive, for which anybody who is interested can take part. Safety group to renovate memorial VILLAGERS hoping to renovate a war memorial want people to come forward with names to go on it.

‘It’s made of sandstone and the letters were raised but the wind has eroded some of them away’

The memorial in Blacker Hill is made of sandstone and over the years some of the names have worn away, but now members of the local crime and safety group want to remedy that. Albert Bishop, of the group, said they knew the names of men who died during the First World War had been on it, but didn’t know how

many or who. “We’d like to get any photographs of it, or hear from people who know whose names were on it or anyone who was killed in the First World War. “It’s made of sandstone and the letters were raised but the wind has eroded some of them away. “We know very little about it and

would appreciate it if anyone has any more information.” He said he didn’t believe the memorial, which stands at the edge of the rec on Wentworth Road, had been engraved with the names of those killed during the Second World War but would like those to be added too. G Information to Albert on 747069.

Georgia but has adopted the fighting nickname of ‘the Barnsley Gladiator’ after moving to the town in 2000. While at a gym a few years ago he met Stefan Trayan, an Armenian who has a BA in Business and Management at University Campus Barnsley. After becoming friends through their shared Russian language, they have decided to go into business together and stage fights. “Tengiz has the knowledge about fighting and the contacts within the sport and I have the business and marketing knowledge so it is a good partnership,” said Stefan. Their company is called Gladiator fights – after

Tengiz’s nickname – and their first show will be at Escapade at 2pm on November 6. There will be two amateur fights in which headshots are banned and competitors must use bodyshots and submissions. Next there will be six semi-professional fights in which head shots are allowed standing up. The event will conclude with a professional fight in which kicks and punches to the head are allowed. “We want to establish cagefighting in Barnsley and it is my dream to find great new fighters here,” said Tengiz. Tickets can be purchased from Escapade or by searching ‘Gladiator Fights Zanazan’ on Facebook.
