2012: A good year for actress
SALVATION ARMY OFFICER AWARDED TOP HONOUR A SALVATION Army officer who helped the Hoyland Common branch move from a tin hut to a new community hall has been awarded the British Empire Medal. Barbara Sabin 73, is continuing the family trend after her father, Cyril Parkin, was awarded a BEM in 1945 for his service overseas in the army’s Royal Corps of Signals. Barbara, who is now an officer for the Salvation Army branch in Rawmarsh, spent 11 years working in Hoyland Common helping to fund-raise thousands of pounds to secure the new £1m centre in Central Street, Hoyland Common, which opened in 2007. “I’m getting used to it, it’s a bit of a shock,” she said. “I have known about it for five weeks because the Cabinet Office write to you and tell you you have got to keep it in strict confidence. I knew in November but I didn’t tell my husband Peter who I have been with for 53 years.” Barbara has also helped with lunch clubs, film nights and over 60s’ groups during her time with the branch and said there was plenty of activity at their hut in Chapel Street before they moved to their new home. “The hut was actually bursting at the seems,” she said. “Every time the door was open there was somebody in. People used to remark it was like a tardis.” She has been involved with the Salvation Army since 1993 and worked for the Parkgate branch in Rawmarsh before coming home to Hoyland Common in 1998.
She officially became an officer in 2000, leaving in 2009. Her friend Cynthia Shaw, of Harley, wrote a number of letters to the Cabinet Office asking for her hard work to be recognised. She cried ‘tears of joy’ when she heard the news. But Barbara, of Barrow Hill, Wentworth, does not take all the credit; she says a lot of people have helped her along the way including Peter, 76. She has been invited to the Queen’s Garden Party in 2014 and will be presented with the medal locally by the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, the Queen’s representative for the area, or by a member of the Royal Family, she says. The couple have already paid a visit to Buckingham Palace in 2008 for their work with the Salvation Army following the opening of the Hoyland Common building. Her father Cyril, who died in 1984, served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and was both a D Day and Market Garden operation (Arnhem) veteran. Barbara is still trying to find out what her father was awarded the medal for and was only told about it after he died. The former Elsecar greengrocer was given the medal for meritorious military service. Cyril was not able to accept the medal in person as he was still serving abroad in the army, but Barbara still has the new year’s honours list her dad is mentioned on as well as a letter from Buckingham Palace and a letter from General Montgomery, informing him of the news. And her dad’s altruism has been instilled in her, Barbara says.

Mark goes for the triple as he shells out for more eggs IT’S no yolk. For when it comes to eggs-traordinary coincidences Mark Winder reckons he can’t be beaten.

Mark thought he had cracked it when he spotted two double yolked eggs in his breakfast fry-up and was so impressed he even took a photograph of his double double-yolkers and posted them on Facebook. To his astonishment, the eggs-act same thing happened just a few days later when he decided to fry some sausage and two further eggs and got two more double yolks. Mark, 33, from Dovecote, Wombwell, admits it was highly eggs-citing and
immediately took more photographs which were again posted on line. The calls centre planning manager said: “I had already looked up the odds of getting a single double-yoked egg and with each egg I cracked the odds were obviously getting exceptional.” Finally after much egging on by his friends eager to find out exactly what lay within the remaining two eggs Mark decided on a massive fry. He cooked bacon, sausage, fried bread — and of course, eggs and cracked his remaining two shells, revealing two more double yolkers. Now Mark says he’s going to shell out for another box of eggs — and promises to let everyone know if any of them has more than one yolk.
RESCUE RABBIT’S CHRISTMAS BIRTH BY LIAM FOUNTAIN AN abandoned rabbit taken in by an RSPCA worker was surprised when she then produced two babies. The rabbit, who has been named Holly, was found behind wheelie bins next to the Wharncliffe Arms in Carlton on December 7. And on December 28 she produced her own Christmas story. RSPCA worker Pat Jobling said: “We couldn’t just leave her there. We had to take her in. “With the timing of all of this we thought we’d name her Holly to fit in with the festivities.” She added: “It’s a shame things like this happen. “The number of animals we find keeps on increasing. We found one rabbit that had its ear bitten, had a broken leg and had had its tail bitten off. “I’d just like to thank all of the volunteers that help with looking after all of these animals.”

DAVID NOW FEELS CHAMPION AND WANTS TO HELP DAVID Walshaw’s life has been something of a game of two halves. After achieving a comfortable position in his life working with the Forestry Commission, the 53-yearold was dealt the triple blow of redundancy, bereavement and a debilitating illness. But he has managed to turn his own ‘game’ around and is empowering others to do the same, as a volunteer community health champion based at Shaw Lane, Barnsley. Community health champions are part of the town’s NHS-funded health trainer service. It works with people on a one-toone basis to support them in making healthier lifestyle choices such as doing physical exercise to ease stress and anxiety, and stopping smoking. “The idea of a community health champion is it’s motivational, taking
a ‘if I can do it anyone can do it’ approach,” said David, of Cockerham Lane, Barnsley. “There are a lot of people in the town who need that call to get them going and make positive changes.” David started out as a health champion with the town’s Fit Reds’ scheme, which draws on men’s passion for football to tackle major health issues including drug use, obesity, drinking and smoking. He became involved after being made redundant by the Forestry Commission, the death of his parents, and contracting neuralgic amyotrophy, a painful viral muscular condition. “I’d always been an active guy,” he said. “Then all of a sudden I had to deal with a body that wouldn’t do what it was supposed to. I wasn’t sleeping very well. When it first started, it felt like someone was try-
ing to push a knitting needle through my shoulder. “Around the same time, my parents died. It was the lowest point of my life. I even considered emigrating to get going again.” After diagnosis and treatment for his condition, David decided to take stock of his life, focussing on his health and well-being. He joined the Fit Reds’ course in September 2010 and over eight weeks, the group received regular dietary advice and blood pressure checks, with each session culminating in a game of football at Barnsley FC’s Oakwell ground. David was so impressed, he volunteered as a community health champion on subsequent courses, including motivational interviewing to encourage men to talk about, and seek help for, their health problem. It has formed the bedrock of his
voluntary work. “The problem with blokes is they put up and shut up,” he said. “They’re often too proud to go and see a doctor. The idea of being a health champ is to try and be someone men can talk to. I try to make them realise they are not alone. The physical side of what I do gets people out of their sedentary lifestyle, it gets them moving and feeling the benefit for body and mind.” David is hoping to return to fulltime employment within the same field as his voluntary work —health — and is about to embark on a new job as a support worker for children with autism. “I have used the service, become a volunteer for it to then gained experience and skills to go into the health employment field.”

Future of colliery band in jeopardy GRIMETHORPE Colliery Band is in danger of folding if it doesn’t find new sponsorship. The world famous brass band is continuing its appeal for new sponsors in order to keep afloat. Band manager Nigel Dixon says it has been struggling financially for a couple of years, ever since its main sponsor went into administration. Nigel said: “If this band was a business it’d have been put into administration a long time ago – we simply can’t afford to keep going this way.” The band, which performed in front of an estimated TV audience of one billion people at the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, played 62 concerts last year just to help balance the books. “Any money we make goes back into the band to help subsidise for travel and manage educational projects that we’ve set up.”
Ask us for more information on keeping you and your home warm and getting help with benefits, heating costs and insulation.
The band runs an outreach programme providing free music lessons for schoolchildren, which is also under threat. “Children don’t get free lessons in schools like they used to. If kids can’t afford to learn to play an instrument then they aren’t going to grow up to join a brass band. At this rate, brass bands won’t exist as the next generation aren’t being taught how to play, and we’ll lose something very iconic.” Nigel said the band sponsors players at Birkwood Primary school in Cudworth and has a youth band with more than 100 members. “A little while ago, we put a project in place where local children could get free music lessons through us,” Nigel said. “Without sponsorship, that would have to go and if we don’t have any funding we could go out of existence as well.”
TALKS TO LURE CHINESE Newstead Nurseries ATTRACTING big-spending Chinese tourists to Barnsley by exploiting Christian links with a spiritual leader from the town will be discussed at a meeting later this month. Members of the James Hudson Taylor Trust, specialists in Chinese business, education, culture and ethics, and representatives from Barnsley College will look at how they can develop links between Barnsley-born 19th century Christian missionary James Hudson Taylor and China, where he lived from 1854. Hudson Taylor is little known in Barnsley but is hailed as a spiritual leader by more than 70 million Christians in the Far East. Owen Gleadall, of Barnsley Street Pastors, believes Barnsley’s links to Hudson Taylor are a unique selling point, especially since a heritage trail was set up consisting of plaques erected to honour the missionary,
including one outside Boots which is built on the site where he was born. Owen said: “Barnsley is the spiritual home of the Chinese Christian community because it is the birthplace of Hudson Taylor and it is estimated that 70 million Chinese owe their Christian heritage to him. Many thousands of them have expressed a wish to come and study here.” Owen said someone he knows from Hope House Church in the town centre visited China and witnessed 4,000 people at one service praying for Barnsley. He added: “They hold seven services at day at that church, that’s between 25,000 and 30,000 during the day praying for Barnsley because they believe it’s their spiritual home. And that is just one church in one part of China.” Ideas to expand these links could include a Chinese quarter or being twinned with a city in China, he said.
£3,000 reward for Angel A REWARD of £3,000 is now being offered for the safe return of a champion gundog. Angel, a German shorthaired pointer, was snatched after being walked by her owner Dawn Maw between Barugh Green and Cawthorne in early December. Since then news of her theft has spread via social networking sites and Dawn has travelled the length and breadth of the country looking for her missing pet. Angel, whose Kennel Club name is Champion Barleyarch Atora At Tequesta even has an Angel is Missing page on Facebook. Dawn, 42, and her friends have taken posters showing a photograph of Angel and details of the reward all over the UK but so far with no luck. Now South Yorkshire Police have joined in the appeal asking anyone who might have information to contact them. Dawn, of Medway Close, Barugh Green, said: “The reward is growing and the number of people on the look out for her is growing but it’s very frustrating to still have no news.” Dawn, who has several dogs, put her other pets in the back of her car at around 7.20am on Thursday December 6 at the parking area at the start of the old Wagon Road on the A635 Lane Head Road, Cawthorne. Anyone who may have information call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 227 of December 6, 2012.
“We talk about the decline of the Arcade. Why can’t we have a Chinese quarter there with the same sort of things as they have in China Town in London? I think some of the shops could think about having a Chinese point of sale or information.” Owen said Barnsley College was looking to send a delegation to China to attract students, and that a Chinese-speaking ambassador for Barnsley would be a good idea. “The people I’ve spoken to in the business community are very excited.” But he added: “The last time we had a delegation, trying to get some of the people to take it seriously was quite difficult, I haven't a clue why. I don’t think people can get their head around the opportunity that’s available, it’s the almost-too-good-to-betrue syndrome.” ■ The meeting, on January 21, will be held at The Civic from 2pm to 4pm.

GRANDMA IS AIMING TO RAISE £250K TO TREAT BOY’S CANCER BY LYNSEY BRADFORD THE GRANDMOTHER of a two-old-boy with a rare and aggressive form of cancer is trying to raise £250,000 to get him treatment abroad, after doctors said it would be difficult to continue his treatment here.
Appeal: Oliver with grandmother Catherine Bottom.
Oliver Field was diagnosed with neuroblastoma – cancer of the nerve cells – when he was eight months old. It had been thought he was beating the disease but his family received the devastating news four days before Christmas that a tumour had developed near his kidneys.
His grandmother Catherine Bottom, of South Road, Dodworth, and Oliver’s parents Laura and Paul Field, are now desperately trying to raise the cash for lifesaving treatment which is not yet available in the UK after doctors said the tumour was very hard to treat for a second time. Catherine, 52, said: “Oliver is just beautiful. He’s happy, kind and gentle and we were just devastated again, when we found out it had come back because he had been doing so well. When he went for the scan we just expected it to be clear.” Catherine said the family, along with Oliver’s brother Sam, five, had been looking forward to Christmas, because last year,
Oliver was only discharged from hospital on Christmas Eve. She added: “We tried to make Christmas as good as it could be. You can’t be upset in front of him because he’s so bubbly. He just wants to play and join in and he copies everything his brother does. “Laura and Paul are so strong, it’s unbelievable. They have to carry on for the boys, that’s what she always says. They are so brave.” Oliver had an MRI scan on December 18, and Laura and Paul, of Dalton, near Huddersfield, were told the cancer had returned. Oliver is still undergoing tests, and yesterday started another
course of chemotherapy with the hope of shrinking the tumour. Catherine added: “We don’t know why there are things available in other countries that we can’t get in Britain. We’re just looking at all our options in other countries.” Catherine and her family have already raised £40,000 through bag packing at Morrisons, Westway, where she works, sky dives, coffee mornings, sponsored walks and chest-waxing. She added: “We need to have raised the money by summer.” ■ To donate, visit www.theoliverfieldappeal.co.uk or text OLIF95 £10 (or any other whole donation between £1-£10) to 70070.

£1,000 reward offered A REWARD of £1,000 is being offered for information that could lead to an arrest and charge following the death of a man in Goldthorpe more than a year ago. Peter Topping was believed to have been laid in the road on Co-operative Street on December 29, 2011, when a vehicle drove over him. The driver did not stop, continuing along Co-operative Street, turning left on to Doncaster Road. Despite police enquiries, neither the vehicle nor the driver have ever been traced, but officers want to speak to the occupants of three cars believed to
have been in the area at the time. Insp Geoff Young added: “The makes and models of three vehicles that left Co-operative Street near the time of the incident may contain witnesses. “The drivers of the vehicles may live in the area or may have been visiting someone.” The three cars were a dark coloured Mercedes C class, a dark coloured Land Rover Freelander, and a silver coloured Audi A3. ● Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting incident 779 of 29 December 2011 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
A ROYSTON woman lost six stones in eight months with the help of a fitness boot camp. Deana Kirkby, 42, dropped five dress sizes and lost 14 inches from her waist after attending Superheroes’ Fitness in the village, going from 19st 3lbs to 13st 3lbs. Deana said: “It feels good, I’m a lot healthier now than I was. Altogether I’ve lost 60 inches all over — that’s a full tape measure! I feel really good, I can’t thank everyone enough at the boot camp. I couldn’t have done it without them. “Everyone is really supportive and we all spur each other on to keep losing weight.” Deana attended three individual fourweek boot camp packages, which consisted of three exercise classes per week and a personal healthy eating plan. Her husband Richard now joins her at the classes and has lost two stones since joining. Jilly Woodthorpe, who runs Superheroes’ Fitness describes Deana as her ‘biggest success story’. Jilly said: “Deana came to us about eight months ago after hearing about the programme from a friend. “Everyone who has taken part in our boot camp packages has lost weight and kept it off, but nobody has done as well as Deana. “She’s now at a level where she is able to do it on her own and she’s continuing to lose weight. “She’s done exceptionally well.”

QUIT SMOK ING – not only is smoking bad for your health but it’s also an expensive habit so stubbing out in the new year can minimise the risk of diseases associated with cigarettes whilst saving you money. Quitting can also improve your appearance as smoking causes discoloured teeth, yellow fingernails and fine lines and wrinkles. Research also shows that smokers are one and a half times more likely to lose their teeth. Help for those who want to quit is available through the NHS. LOSE WEIGHT – this
“Want to lose those unwanted inches?” ULTRASONIC CAVITATION is probably the most effective non-surgical inch loss treatment available on the market today. By utilising the latest in modern technology, inches could be lost off any given area of the body.
How It Works The first stage of the ultrasonic cavitation treatment is what we call “Cracking”. A technician will slowly guide an ultrasonic head over the treatment area and ultrasonic waves will disrupt and break down fat cells in the body. Next, a second head, this time slightly warmer, is moved over the same area in a process we call “Melting”. This causes the triglycerides in the fat cells to be absorbed into the body’s lymphatic system so that it can be naturally excreted. The treatment is suitable for men and women who want effective removal of excess fat cells without surgery and works even better when combined with a good diet and exercise.

New Year New You SHAPE YOUR FUTURE IN 2013 WITH OUR TOP TEN FITNESS GOALS... AT THE turn of the year many people pledge to get fit, but few stick to their New Year resolution. Getting truly fit and healthy takes time and planning, and for many people the effort is too much and they give up after a couple of weeks. Having a clear set of guidelines will help you stick to your resolution, giving you real focus and direction. To help you achieve your fitness resolution, here is a list of the top ten fitness goals that will improve your energy, looks and quality of life in 2013. ■ Work out regularly – Aim to train two to five times a week. Each session should last between 20 minutes to an hour. Remember it is the quality (not the quantity) of the time spent training that leads to greater fitness. ■ Do a mixture of exercises – Your weekly exercise programme should include elements of cardiovascular (aerobics, running, brisk walking, stepping, skipping rope, rowing), resistance training (weights or own body exercises such as press ups) and stretching. You should always warm
up and cool down before each session. ■ Take up a new class – Commit to trying a new exercise discipline within the next month to target a different part of the body. For example, a pilates class will teach you how to build core training into your exercise principles, and show you how to hit your abdominals in ways that are not possible with conventional situps. Why not try a kickboxing or Tae Bo class instead of the usual step or aerobics? ■ Become independent – It’s really important to learn to exercise without equipment. If you learn to use your own body by doing squats, lunges, press-ups, a variety of sit-ups and stretches, you can workout wherever you are. ■ Eat a balanced diet – You’ll never get fit if you don’t put the right fuel into your body. If you simply exercise more, to make up for eating junk food, you will actually do yourself more harm than good. Food is not your enemy, but you will become stronger and fitter more quickly if you eat little amounts of nutritious
foods at short intervals. ■ Get help – Working with a personal trainer, either at home or the gym, can make the difference between getting almost fit and achieving true fitness. ■ Create a healthy environment – Clean out your fridge and cupboards and get rid of easy-to-eat junk foods that are filled with empty calories and packed with salt. ■ Surround yourself with likeminded people – The more you meet up with individuals who are just as keen as you are to get fit, the less chance you have of failing. ■ Keep moving – Try to walk more and use the stairs instead of using the car, bus or lift, and take every opportunity to be involved in fun and Don't give up on getting fit: Commit to trying a new exercise discipline within the games, be it with the dog, your chilnext month to target a different part of the body. dren or your partner. ■ Remember, fitness is for life – Working out and eating correctly are not short-term projects. A LOOK AT WHY 2012 WAS A FLAMING GOOD YEAR A sunny Monday in a sodden summer when the Olympic torch came to Barnsley was a highlight but an array of extraordinary ordinary people put in gold medal performances in 2012. Ian Thompson reports. BARNSLEY is not known nationally for its joie de vivre but the day the Olympic torch came to town in June put that to bed. About 40,000 people lined the streets to welcome the flame. Flag-waving school children formed parts of what was believed to be the biggest crowd to gather across the borough. An honoured group had their 15 minutes of fame — or should that be flame? — as they ran with the torch through Lundwood, Cundy Cross, the town centre, Darton and Kexborough. Olympic medallist Dorothy Hyman said carrying the torch brought back memories of her success in Rome. The sprinter won silver and bronze medals in 1960. “The atmosphere and excitement got better and better and I found it very emotional,” she said. Jack Mitchell-Ryan got a standing ovation when he rose from his wheelchair and walked with the torch. The 19-year-old from Royston was injured in a freak accident two years ago. Others had a successful year. Actress Katherine Kelly scooped a National Television Award days after making a dramatic exit from ‘Coronation Street’. She won ‘Best Serial Drama Performance’ but was unable to collect her award as she was on stage at the National Theatre in a production of ‘She Stoops to Conquer’. Car salesman Chris Heritage, 24, of Millhouse Green, ran more than two marathons in two days before jumping out of a plane for the charity MIND. There was a happy ending when seven horses were rescued from burning stables in Preston Way, Monk Bretton. Residents alerted the owners Karen Toon, of Athersley North, and Jayne Firth, of Lundwood. One horse came out when residents forced the stable doors open with a crowbar but the others stayed inside because they were scared. Karen and Jayne led the horses to safety. Prince Charles spent more than an hour meeting Chronicle staff on a visit to the company. Archaeological surveys on the 17th century Rockley blast furnace and an engine house on the Wentworth Castle estate
A star is born: Successful actress Katherine Kelly. paved the way for their restoration. The South Yorkshire Industrial History Society feared the weather was taking its toll on the monuments. Talking of weather, torrential rain in July brought a repeat of the floods of 2007. Lang Avenue at Lundwood was blocked as homes were submerged, a woman moved into her home at Low Valley only hours before the River Dove broke its banks and a Dodworth farmer’s crops were blighted. Barnsley was declared the toughest place to be a teenager. Youngsters faced an ‘almost insurmountable’ challenge battling against a mix of social factors standing in the way of achievement, according to education specialists Ambitious Minds. A report said Barnsley was blighted by poor educational attainment of its young people, lack of jobs, affordability of housing and the cost of higher education. Ardsley artist Tony Heald made light of the theft of one of his paintings from Munster City Gallery, Germany. He wondered if it had put him in the same league as Munch, Picasso, da Vinci and others who had had their works stolen.
