Young footballer scores scholarship A BARNSLEY college student has scored a scholarship with a university in Mississippi, USA. Tom Toulson, 18, secured a football scholarship with William Carey University, where he will be playing for the William Carey Crusaders Men's Soccer team alongside his studies. The midfielder secured the scholarship after impressing coaches at a PASS4Soccer showcase, who arrange scholarships in USA universities for players around the world. Tom said: “The support I have received from the college has really helped me pursue my goals in foot-

ball and education. I’m buzzing to get over there and looking forward to the hot weather.” The 18-year-old, who lives on Doncaster Road was a regular starter for Barnsley Sports Academy’s male football team and also captained the team. Mark Ryan, Sport Programme Manager at the college added: “Tom has worked really hard to develop as a footballer during his time here, working with the coaching team at Barnsley Sports Academy. Tom has a real opportunity to progress in football and education and we wish him all the very best."

Spring seems to have sprung at long, long last! WELL it’s lovely to see sun art for a change! I’ve still got my big coat cause I’m nesh as owt but hopefully this is the start of warmer days. The clocks have gone forward so weather needs to follow suit. It’s been lovely this week to see WABers coming together and celebrating different awareness days. From odd socks for Down Syndrome Day to wearing your best sports gear for Sports Relief, it’s lovely to see you all getting behind these events that make a difference to so many

people as well as showing support. I have to say, the chocolate debate brought back so many memories of loved chocolates that are no longer with us. My favourite one growing up was the Cadbury Snowflake and I was so sad when it went. I really wish I tried Spira (I’m a 90’s baby though so missed my chance), you all made your opinions on it no longer being available very clear! Fingers crossed we’ll see these bars floating about again one day... ‘Ave a good week! Altine

Choosing the best chocolate bar has you feeling a little bit nostalgic... LAST week, we posted a photo of the new Cadbury’s caramel twirl and the response was sheer excitement. Following this, we decided to ask the WAB community what you thought was the best chocolate bar? We have a top five, and your comments along with this. In fifth place, Cadbury’s Fuse bar. A bar of milk chocolate with with raisins, fudge pieces, rice krispies and peanuts. Ben Pacey: Fuse bars were awesome, what happened to them? Rob Carter: I used to love the fuse bar and wasn’t even a big fan of nuts. Wish they’d bring that one back. In fourth place, Cadbury’s Star Bars. A milk chocolate bar filled with caramel and crushed roasted peanuts. Andrew Sage: Starbars are

underestimated. They are awesome. Danielle Prentice: Star Bar! In third place, The Texan Bar. A nougat/toffee bar covered with chocolate David Neeham: Texan bar from the 80s. Karl Whitfield: Texan. Lee Keith: Texan. Donna Louise Brown: Texan Bars! Gayle Standeven: I was partial to a Texan bar when they were available! In second place, Wispa Gold. Textured milk chocolate bar with a soft caramel centre Adam Parkin: Wispa Gold’s got to be up there? Remember Wispa Cappuccino? Or did I just dream that? Amanda Patton: Wispa gold Abby Betton: Wispa gold And in first place, WAB’s favourite chocolate is... Spira!

A milk chocolate product in the form of a hollow twisted spiral. Many people mentioned this bar and how much it’s missed. Kelly Stather: Bring back the Spira! Em Louise: Spira! They were amazing. Lyndsay Stansfield: Spira. Natalie Pinky Parkes: SPIRA! And they don’t do them anymore they were my faves. Amanda Pendleton: Totally agree with the Spira! My sister used to have a newsagents in Manchester in the 1980s and they were brought out there way before it came to Barnsley. She gave me a box full for my 14th birthday...bloody gorgeous! Tracy Baxter: Spira every time. I even signed an online petition to bring it back. Justine Lavender: Loved Fuse, Wispa Gold, Secret, but got to be spira.

THE BEAST of Wombwell, Peter Pickering has died aged 80. Pickering has been detained under a hospital order since 1972 after admitting to the manslaughter 14-yearold Shirley Boldy of Wombwell. He had recently been found guilty of raping a then-18-yearold and he was suspected of murdering Wakefield schoolgirl Elsie Frost in 1965. West Yorkshire Police confirmed he died on Saturday night in the psychiatric unit in Berkshire and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Tarn is darn with odd socks ON March 21, the world celebrated Down Syndrome day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the genetic condition. As part of the celebrations, people were asked to wear odd socks to symbolise their support. As usual, many of you WABers got involved and sent us in pictures of your bright, colourful socks!

FIREFIGHTERS attended a car on Wellington street that had been deliberately set alight. The fire crew was called to the town centre at 2:15pm Friday March 23, following reports of smoke coming from the area. No one was injured.

A day in WAB history... Sun shines on the Reds WAB history takes a look through the archives at WAB news from years gone by. This week, we’re off to March in 2011. Here’s what hit the headlines... Tuesday March 22 2011 Will Barnsley Celebrate The Royal Wedding? We revealed on our Facebook page yesterday that pubs and clubs in Barnsley are going to be allowed to stay open until 1am to allow revellers to celebrate the Royal Wedding. But what do you think? Do people care anymore? Are the good old days of street parties and bunting long past? What will you do to celebrate it? Friday March 25 2011 Where is the worst potholes? So we hear in the budget that there's been an extra £100m allocated to fix pot holes

across the country. We're hoping Barnsley gets a share: check out the video Nicky filmed when the snow destroyed the roads in Lundwood... Today we're asking you to come on here and add your lists of the worst pot holes in Barnsley - we intend to send it over to the council to let them know where they all are. Wednesday March 30 2011 They've done it! Barnsley Football Club is to become the first in the country to become solar powered. Work will start next month installing photovoltaic panels on the roofs of two stands and the external wall of the south stand at Oakwell enough to provide energy for about 140 homes. Electricity generated will be used within the ground, with any excess

being fed back into the National Grid. It's estimated it will save the club about half their electricity bills a year – equivalent to tens of thousands of pounds. General manager Don Rowing said: "With energy costs spiralling and likely to continue that way it makes business sense to use the large amount of roof surface available to us in order to save the club money and also to reduce our carbon footprint." Dodworth-based Solar Europa Limited is due to start work on the project, which is costing more than £1m, on May 9, with completion due in June. The cost of the installation will be met by the company, which will recoup any money made selling electricity back to the National Grid via the Feed In Tariff.

Singer Girls and for anyone with a song in their heart...A village without a voice. That's what the locals are saying about Llandegwen, deep in the Welsh valleys. The village choir, once a source of pride for the small mining community, has been forced to disband; the elderly choirmaster heartbroken by the empty seats belonging to those who'll never return from the battlefields. The arrival of a young war widow from the East End with her little boy sets tongues wagging, not least when rumours abound that she's looking to revive the choir. Can the community set aside their grief and lift their voices, and the village's hopes, once more?

SPRING is fast approaching, so here are some creative ideas to spruce up your windows and refresh the look and feel of any room. Blinds and curtains can be functional and very decorative, blending bold colours with original designs and charming crafts for bright summer decorating. There is a vast range of fabrics available, from cool or neutral colours, patterned voiles, butterflies and birds, to bold floral prints in bright colours, blooming flowers and delicate feathers, and even coloured window shutters. The addition of small accessories to curtains and blinds can add a huge difference to your window dressings. These could include different coloured tapes on wooden venetians, contrasting bottom bars on roller blinds, braids and pompoms on roman blinds and even contrasting edging on curtains. You could also add some fancy rope tie-backs or ornate curtain finials to make a feature of them and stand out against a blank wall. If you live in a cool climate or your rooms are north facing, you do not need to protect your home interiors from the damaging effects of direct sunlight. You could therefore experiment with lighter options such as voile curtains and blinds which give you privacy but don’t block out too much light, keeping the room light and airy. There are a wide range of voiles available, including plain, patterned, bold colours and embroidered options. If you have painted walls you can use creative window furnishings to produce a great visual effect and change the way your room looks and feels. Take down curtains for cleaning and vacuum or dust blinds. Next vacuum the floors, chairs

and sofas, cleaning behind furniture. Clean the fireplace and chimney and deep clean the windows. Then once everything is sparkling and gleaming you’ve got your chance to see if there is any painting or decorating need, or may be even a new plant or lamp might be all that’s required.

Beautiful Homes

Lavender’s in vogue... YOUR home could blossom this year by following some key design trends. Top of the list is the introduction of foliage back into the interior. Potted plants and shrubs can help oxygenate your rooms and add a cosy natural element. But they shouldn’t just be restricted to actual flora. Floral prints and wallpaper is set to make a big resurgence in any colour, but particularly in natural greens. And this move towards the natural even stretches into accessories such as ceramics or tableware, with floral motifs accentuating the larger statement patterns. One of the most distinctive features of any space is colour. And if you want to be on trend in 2018, that colour should be lavender. Continuing the floral theme, the botanical colour has been chosen by design giant Pantone as its colour of the year. The company, famous for its colour-swatches – a key tool in the armoury of any interior designer – selected Ultra Violet 183838 as the one to invest in. That means if you are looking for a unifying colour in a room, and can’t think of the best choice, lavender could be the one. It doesn’t mean you have to deck out your space entirely in violet. The colour can be com-

plemented by deep blues and other purples to add some variety. Those darker shades could be key to riding the wave of another trend: the revival of black. The colour can add depth to any room and while it is often avoided for fear of making an area too dark, used precisely and in moderation it can actually accentuate even the smallest space. It can add shading through accessories to other pieces or it can make the colours pop on bolder statement items. It works well alongside darker natural materials,

which also works well for another 2018 trend: just like florals, pieces made from natural materials are also back in. When paired up with dark, moody colours or earthy shades such as beige or even greige – grey-beige – wooden furniture, especially darker wooden furniture, can add a touch of past glamour to your home. And that retro sense plays into another revival: modern vintage. Not shabby-chic, which has been popular for a number of years now, but the restoration of trends which first made waves back in the 1960s.

Claire makes Unsane seem believable... UNSANE (15) Directed by: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Claire Foy, Jay Pharoah, Joshua Leonard SAWYER Valentini (Foy) is on the run from a stalker. Seeking some therapy for her trauma, she unwittingly signs herself in for voluntary detention at a psychiatric facility. But things become even more complicated when Sawyer recognises one of the staff – and it is the man she has been trying to run from. Unsane plays as any regular psychological thriller: there are doubts over whether you can trust Sawyer’s sanity. There are mind games from other characters. And the asylum setting lets staff members walk ground well trodden by Nurse Ratched in the classic One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. What makes it a little different is how Soderbergh chose to film it. Playing into the theme of stalking and observation, the entire movie is shot using an iPhone. It lends some shots an unusual set up and makes proceedings particularly claustrophobic, especially in the yellowed interiors of the hospital. And there is some invention with the toolset, with one drug-fuelled scene particularly trippy. The audience gets in very close to

Foy’s performance. Equipped with a high-strung New England accent, she makes her possible insanity plausible, but her desperation undeniable. If she was looking for a way to separate the audience from her performance as Queen Elizabeth in Netflix’s The Crown, she has found it. Joshua Leonard also puts in a suitably creepy performance as Sawyer’s potential stalker: regardless of whether he is her attacker or not, he remains unsettling on screen. But without the gimmick of the camera – and Foy’s performance anchoring it at the centre – this would be an unremarkable thriller. More time could have been spent on the uncertainty of whether Sawyer is mad or not. Instead, by about a third of the way in you will have a pretty clear idea. And elsewhere, you will have seen a lot of this before. As emotive a setting as a mental hospital is, in 2018 you wonder if it is quite right to still be playing them out as a house of horrors instead of healing. Would Unsane still be worth seeing if it was completed on a standard camera? I think so. But it remains a fairly run of the mill movie regardless of the size of the camera it was filmed on. HHH HH

Tribute to icon is revealed... THE Fiat 500 Collezione special series mades its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show. Another tribute to the Fiat icon which celebrated its 60th birthday last year, the 500 Collezione embodies all the characteristics of one of the most famous Italian icons, with its unique style and unmistakable, timeless design. The Fiat 500 Collezione celebrates the 500’s timeless style and design, its iconic status and its ever-fashionable personality with a fresh, sophisticated spirit, conjured up by finely tailored workmanship and exclusive colour and material combinations. Available both as a hatch and a convertible, it features a modern reworking of its great forerunner’s unmistakable design signatures, with chrome trim on the front bumper, bonnet and mirror caps and exclusive 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. Several optional cool liveries can be chosen, including the new two-colour Primavera (Bossa Nova White and Lunar Grey), the two-colour Acquamarina (Bossa Nova White and Smooth Mint) and Taormina Ivory, as

well as Bossa Nova White White and Epic Blue. A chrome Collezione logo autographs the boot to complete the look. The interior has the same restrained yet irresistible elegance with a body coloured dashboard: white in combination with Primavera and mint in the combination with Acquamarina. The seats are also in two colours, with a grey striped base and ivory upper section, and are embroidered with the 500 logo. The Collezione logo also appears inside, embroidered on the floor mats. The new Fiat 500 Collezione offers the latest connectivity and technology: customers can specify options including the Uconnect seven-inch HD LIVE radio, which is Apple CarPlayTM ready and Android AutoTM compatible, integrated Tom Tom navigation, and Beats Audio Hi-Fi system. The Fiat 500 Collezione will be available exclusively in combination with the 1.2 69hp petrol engine, coupled with a five-speed manual or Dualogic transmission. The Fiat 500 Collezione is on sale now, priced from £13,865 OTR for a 1.2 69hp petrol hatch.

Toyota comes out on top of the hybrids... AUTOMOTIVE data experts hpi have crunched the numbers to come up with the best picks when considering a hybrid vehicle. The analysis looked at hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles at one-year-old and 10,000 miles. The Toyota C-HR retains 84.5 per cent of its value after a year and loses around £4,000. The Lexus NX comes a close second, holding 79.5 per cent of its value over the same period. Commenting on the study, Chris Plumb editor from hpi, said: “While hybrids have grown in volume in recent years, they still remain relative-

ly scarce in the used market compared to the traditional fuel types. “As plug-in hybrid vehicles have not been widely adopted by fleets in any volumes, supply reaching the markets is patchy and demand exceeds supply. Buyers should avoid high mileage and poor condition examples as they are a turn-off to second hand buyers. Finally, always make sure you pick a vehicle with a full service history.” The Toyota Prius, Suzuki Ignis, Toyota Rav4, Kia Niro and Hyundai Ioniq also make the list with industryleading levels of low depreciation.
