It is time for winter to disappear for a year! WELL we never thought that The Beast From the East would yet again cause chaos across Tarn! We think the only plus to the snow was that it fell over the weekend so at least life is now back to normal apart from a few icy paths... The snow definitely brought out the community spirit, as we received hundreds of messages thanking those helping stranded cars. Also this week, we’ve got two Barnsley lasses who appeared on BBC’s Bargain Hunt as well as your views on if it’s time to get rid of pennies. We’ve got all of our regular features including Pap your Pets and A day in WAB history and an interesting review on the new Tomb Raider film. For all that and more, read on...

There may be no need to look after pennies THE government is looking into the future of 1p and 2p coins as more of us use cards to make payments. More businesses are also choosing to run a cashless system so the demand for pennies is not as high. Surveys suggest six in 10 of UK 1p and 2p coins are only used once before being saved in a jar or thrown in the bin. Although there are no current plans to scrap the pennies just yet, do you think it’s time to ditch shrapnel? We asked you for your thoughts on Facebook... Adele Dixon: Bad idea. My kids love the slot machines on holiday. Sam Vickers: It will be used as an excuse to put up prices, and the millions who still pay by cash would be affected the most. Craig Harrington: Why do they always have to mess around with things that don’t need fixing? Lee Rigby: Yes get rid of them. Prices might rise but that’s meaningless really as it will all fluctuate with RPI
and wages and cost of living just like it always does. Melanie Atkinson: Shops can reduce or increase prices, don’t automatically assume that prices will rise. Lots of countries have got rid of their equivalent to the 1p and 2p and their economies haven’t ended up in free fall. These denominations are pretty worthless to many people and I wouldn’t miss them. Ashleigh Joblin: I never use copper so I won’t miss it. I never spend it and just end up leaving it in a jar somewhere. I think saving it up is old fashioned anyway. Rachel Milthorpe: What about the fantastic 2p machines at the seaside and all the little charity boxes on the checkouts? It may only be copper but when it all adds up, it goes a long way. Ricky Jackson: I like knowing I can always get the right change, plus I don’t want everything going up by a penny or two. After all, think of the hundreds of
extra pence will soon add up. Matthew Dunford: Prices will go up for stuff as they will no longer be able to give us change back. Peter Beard: Would have a really adverse affect on charities, after all pennies make pounds. Jean Ashmore Makorkij: When we lost the half pence everything went up. So it’s just another government rip off. Lee Marsden: Something similar happened in Australia. What happens now, is the price stays the same and if you pay by card that is what you pay. If you pay cash the final bill gets rounded to the nearest five cents.
items we buy every week that could easily mean an extra spend of £20 a month for most people. Josh Fletcher: Does anyone use 2ps or 1ps any-
more? I don’t. Charities will be ok because people will start to donate 5ps and 10ps instead. So they’ll be better off. I hate having copper on me.
Sydney Hemingway: Scrapping the copper coins will mean all prices rise. Emma Jenkins: Everything will round up, you won’t see anything round down. All the

Pam and Dianne are top bargain hunters after winning golden gavel TWO Barnsley women won the coveted ‘golden gavel’ when they appeared on Bargain Hunt this week. Pam Powers, 74, of Deacons Way, Monk Bretton and her friend Dianne Murray, 64, from Staincross, appeared on Monday’s show which was filmed at Newark Showground. The pair, who have been friends for 39 years, applied because they thought it would be good fun - and they weren’t disappointed. They even won the golden gavel for selling all of their chosen items at a profit. The show was presented by Anita Manning, while Pam and Dianne, the red team, were helped by expert Caroline Hawley. They scoured the showground for antiques, selecting a jug, a broach and a mirror. Pam said: “We had a full day there, where we had to buy the antiques and got to experience the excitement and fun. We had a great day.
“We went to the toilet and someone asked if they could have a photo with us. we felt quite famous except that the photo was in the toilets. “It was surprising how many people wanted to take photos.” A few weeks later, the pair attended an auction house in Derby where the items were sold. All the items were sold at a profit and the broach – which the pair had bought for £18 – was bought by someone in Japan who paid £90 for it.
Betty’s a real hotshot... ARIZONA played host to the biggest youth soccer contest in America, and probably the world, where the top scorer was a 16-year-old from Barnsley. In all six teenagers from Barnsley took part in the President’s Day Tournament across two teams, the South Yorkshire FA’s under 16 girls and under 18 boys. Both teams finished third overall in their sections, in a tournament of 480 teams from all over the world. Betty Cheetham, 16, from Royston, was the tournament’s top scorer, netting five times in
four games. “Betty was fantastic,” said coach Steve Maddock. “They all were. They were all up against teams that were a lot fitter and train a lot more intensively. So we were walking wounded by the end. But they were outstanding and both teams finished third in their sections. We’re already booked in for next year.” The boys team included Barnsley players Matty Greaves and Tom Toulson (captain), while in the girls team Betty was joined by Chloe Allott, Katrina Parsons and Nicole Cutting.
They ended up with £126 profit, which they got to keep, along with the golden gavel broach. But they narrowly missed out on winning the competition, with the other team making a profit of £128. Pam added: “We thought we were in with a chance but the blue team beat us by £2. “We would like to have said we’d won but it was a fabulous experience. “The other team were two soldiers and they were great, we had a good laugh with them.”

How much help should you give your children? A NEW survey suggests that parents in the UK are less likely to spend more than an hour per day helping with their children’s homework compared with parents in other countries. A survey of 27,830 parents in 29 countries found only 11 per cent of UK parents spent an hour per day helping their children, far behind 62 per cent in India. Meanwhile, a report for the Department for Education published in 2014, concluded that students in Year 9 who spent between two and three hours on homework on an average week night were almost 10 times more likely to achieve five good GCSEs (A*-C) than students who did no homework at all. Do you help your kids with their homework? And do you think they get too much? We asked you for your thoughts... Jayne Mallinson Hinchliffe: More parents have to work longer hours to afford to live and don’t get as much time to spend with their kids. I think they get too much homework. They spend enough hours a day at school to do their work.
John-Paul Sykes: That’s what school is for. I’m far too busy on social media commenting on posts about helping kids with their homework to help my kids with their homework. Geoff Chadwick: I think kids need to spend more time helping their parents. Jayne Ogley: I got homework as a child but I had a mum who stayed at home and a dad who went to work. Dad could bring in plenty enough to sup-
‘Good’ for hospital BARNSLEY Hospital has been given a ‘good’ rating by the Care Quality Commission in its latest report. It’s a step in the right direction for the hospital, which was rated as ‘requires improvement’ in its last inspection in
2015. The hospital has achieved the top rating in the categories of being effective, caring, responsive and well-led. But it requires improvement for keeping patients safe after noting some procedures were not robust enough.

port us all and have money left over. It’s so unfair on kids and parents these days. Most mums would love to have an hour a night to sit down and actually enjoy their children and watch them grow. Sarah Brown: My daughter gets four hours of homework a night, she’s in year 11 so I expected a lot but homework as well as revision is too much. Val Roebuck Dootson: Kids
are going to need 10 A levels to get a job in a fast food joint soon. It’s difficult enough these days to get a decent job so I reckon give them all the help they need. They’re going to need as much education as possible in order to shine through. Marilyn Merryweather Hallworth: My daughter and son-in-law spend ages sat at the table with their two children helping with homework so you can’t generalise. Jodi Cawthorne: My six and 10 year old get one lot of English and one lot of maths a week. It doesn’t take up much time for us at all and they don’t mind it. They have a week to complete things so it’s not a lot at all in my eyes and it benefits them. Karina Wright: Mine doesn’t get any so we set it at home. Peter Beard: If my memory is not playing tricks, I think we got three subjects a day as homework from Holgate Grammar in the early 60s. Lorna Baker: My son is nine. His homework is reading three times a week, maths or literacy, spellings and handwriting. I think it’s far too much.
‘Beast from the East’ came back to bite... JUST as life went back to normal and we thought we could pack our big coats away, the ‘Beast from the East” returned over the weekend with a vengeance. Buses returned to the depot, taxis were working overtime and people abandoned cars left right and centre as road conditions deteriorated. Despite the unwelcome return of the snow, it was great to see WABers coming out and giving a helping hand to stranded drivers. We received plenty of messages from grateful drivers who were able to make it home due to the wonderful act of kindness displayed by you. The snow brought a fantastic sense of community spirit and WABer Tracey Hughes sent this photo in alongside this wonderful message “Tonight these 3 (one is hidden from view) deserve medals, they’ve been snow super heroes. “In the bitterly cold weather and dangerous conditions they pushed drivers up Park Road from Sheffield Rd, their faces & fingers bright red from the seriously icy cold blast but still they persevered. “Well done to all 3 of them, a truly selfless act. Thank you all so much.” Hopefully this is the last of the white stuff, and we can actually look forward t’ spring!

A day in WAB history... Portillo expected to steam into Elsecar for BBC show EVERY week we take a look at WAB news from years gone by. This week, we’re off to March 2013. Here’s what hit the headlines... Wednesday March 20 2013 Popular BBC show coming to Elsecar THE popular Great British Railway Journeys TV programme could stop off at Elsecar Heritage Railway next month. Del Tilling, chairman of the heritage railway, said there has been some interest from the makers of the programme, which is presented by politician Michael Portillo. He said he would be coming to look at the Heritage Railway’s project to Cortonwood, the level crossing at Tingle Bridge Lane and the famous Newcomen Beam Engine at Elsecar Heritage Centre. “We are very excited and it came out of the blue,” Del said. He has spoken to Mr Portillo’s researcher and said the line is ‘perfectly placed’ to tell the stories of the South Yorkshire coal field. Del says the area is steeped in history, from iron
forges to the canal era, right through to where the miner’s strike started at Cortonwood Colliery. Thursday March 21 2013 Barnsley welcomes Duke of Kent BARNSLEY welcomed HRH the Duke of Kent as he visited venues across the borough. The Duke visited the RSPB Old Moor wetland centre in Broomhill and the ASOS warehouse in Grimethorpe on Tuesday, where he was welcomed by Barnsley Mayor Coun Dorothy Higginbottom. Prince Edward – a grandson of King George V – is a first cousin of the Queen and champions British businesses at home and overseas as well as appearing on the Queen’s behalf. At ASOS, the Duke met with Cllr Higginbottom, consort Dorothy Parkin-Coates and Cllr Linda Burgess before inspecting the centre, which ships clothes to 190 countries, and unveiling a plaque. At his visit to Old Moor, the Duke officially opened a children’s play area which had been paid for with £50,000 from
Waste Recycling and Environmental Ltd and £40,000 from the council. Monday March 25 2013 Fears over future of pub THE licensee of the Cudworth pub where part of the film Kes was shot fears the iconic building could be knocked down. The Pontefract Road pub owned by Enterprise Inns - was put up for sale two weeks ago. Licensee Adele Sellars says she’s worried the building could be knocked down after having her own bid for the pub refused. “It’s the landmark of Cudworth,” she said. “It’s scary to think that in six months’ time it could be knocked down in favour of new houses or a supermarket that people don’t want.” The 48-year-old took over the pub in October, and the pub wasn’t in the best of states having been closed for five months. Adele says finding out her bid had been refused was very upsetting. “I will keep it open until the end, but when people know that a pub is closing they tend to go elsewhere.”

Tarn will come to life when the Tour de Yorkshire rolls in AND yet again, snow was the talk of the weekend. I can’t say I was excited to see the white stuff and it was grand trying to keep you all up to date with transport updates and all the roads that were closed. I’m happy that we were more or less back to normal this week but I won’t be packing away my big coat just yet! Got to love the British Weather eh... I loved reading all your comments about the possible scrapping of 1p and 2p. I’ll admit I do use my card for more or less everything I buy but Skegvegas or Cleethorpes will never be the same without the penny machines! Let’s hope the Government don’t make any rash decisions and I still wanna pay 99p for a chicken mayo burger at McDonald’s for the
foreseeable future! I’m getting really excited for the Tour de Yorkshire! It was fab to see the trophies visit Barnsley last week and I’m really looking forward to watching the town come to life when the real event takes place on Friday May 4. I’m also pleased to see that Barnsley Hospital was given a ‘Good’ rating by the Care Quality Commission. The hospital has come a long way and it’s great to hear that improvements have been made. And finally, I hope you all had a wonderful St Paddy’s Day! I didn’t have a Guinness because I don’t really like stout but I had a half cider and black... Close enough right? Ave a good week! Jennie transforms her life around... WELL done to this Barnsley lass who is toasting her success after losing six stone in weight. Jennie Hudson, of Boswell Close, joined her local Weight Watchers group having weighed 18 stone at the age of 19. She required surgery to remove her gall bladder after being diag-
nosed with gallstones, which led her to have a lifestyle change. Knowing fatty foods made her health issues worse, Jennie was keen to learn new healthy eating habits that would help to keep her pain free. “It was a mixture of genes, a bad diet and alcohol,” Jennie,
26, said. “When I first joined, I didn’t want to diet but Weight Watchers has never felt like a diet to me. There’s always something you can eat and now my entire life has changed for the better – my confidence, health and marriage. I can even now tie my shoes without a struggle.”

Grab some sea air... THE CLOCKS go forward this weekend, and with it hopes of spring, sunshine and longer days. And yet the gloom of winter is still lingering, so why not raise your spirits by heading off to the seaside to blow the cobwebs away and get a bit of sea air. There are plenty of options from Barnsley: the East Coast is just a small hop away, whether it be Skegness or Cleethorpes, or a bit further afield to the traditional resorts of Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington or Whitby; or even venturing to the Lancashire coast, to ever popular Blackpool, Morecambe or Southport. If you plan to stay in Yorkshire, there is plenty to see.
The Yorkshire coastline has some of the country’s most beautiful and rugged countryside, from fishing villages to long sandy beaches, rocky outcrops and even an abbey or castle. As well as the popular resorts, there are also little gems to discover, places like Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay with unusual shops, stunning beaches, lovely walks and cosy pubs to visit. Whitby’s a town of two halves, with the River Esk running down the middle and the older part of town on the east side is a mix of narrow, cobbled streets before you can head up the famous abbey steps to see the place made famous in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. THE RSPB at Old Moor is setting up 10 events to do over the Spring and Easter holidays. Old Moor sits in the heart of the Dearne Valley and is one of the best places to explore local wildlife. Here are 10 things to do this Spring at the reserve. 1. Look out for wildlife offspring Spring time is usually the time where eggs hatch and babies are born. The reserve is full of ever growing families. Take a stroll and see how many families you can spot there. 2. Test your camera skills Old Moor is a photographers dream. From scenic trails to spectacular sunsets, it is one of the most picturesque spots in the valley. And the wildlife are ready and posing just waiting to be snapped. 3. Dawn walks The dawn chorus is one of the most beautiful sounds of the season, and is celebrated on May 6. Have an expert-led walk across Old Moor looking out birds singing and other wildlife as well. 4. Easter Holiday activities There are over 30 activities to take part in at Old Moor. Pond dipping, bug hunting and a hopping’ Easter trail, there is always something to do this year, whatever the weather, whatever your age.
5. Visit the Gannets Cafe Take a break and enjoy some delicious food whilst looking at the breathtaking views the Dearne Valley has to offer. 6. Circular Reserves loop walk The trail is ideal for a leisurely walk, with stunning views across the Dearne. The loop covers, Bolton Ings, Wombwell Ings, Gypsy Marsh, the Trans Pennine Trail and Old Moor itself. Or if you’re feeling fitter why not run round the 5K loop and enjoy the same spectacular experience. 7. Hear a Bittern boom The bittern is lucky to call the Dearne its home, as it is an extremely rare bird. In the Spring, when mating, they make a booming sound. The ‘boom’ is an unusual sound, as it is more like when you blow over the top of a glass bottle. Will you be able to spot one? 8. A walk on Adwick Washlands A lookout zone and 2.5K meters of path, relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature whilst taking in the views of some pristine habitats 9. Binoculars and telescopes weekend Head to Old Moor on the weekend of April 7, where expert guides will be chatting about everything optics. Test out some of the binoculars in
the comfort of your own home. 10. Give nature a home An RSPB initiative, the visitor team are more than happy to

What’s On There’s plenty going off in Tarn over the next few weeks – especially as we count down to the Tour de Yorkshire. We’ve put together a list of must attend events. There’s more online at wearebarnsley.com
Family and culture
Gig: Stephen Bailey.
THIS Friday Penistone will be getting ready for the Tour de Yorkshire as the Great Barnsley Bunt Off returns. Organisers want the people of Penistone to spruce up their gardens, put on a pinny and help out to make the borough the best in Yorkshire. For information, visit www.barnsley.gov.uk/tdy or email TourDeYorkshire@email@example.com. Entry is free and it starts at 12pm in Penistone Town Hall. On Saturday, you can keep the decorating going with the Celebrate Cycling event in the Cooper Gallery, where you can decorate bunting and flags. It lasts up until April 8 and entry is free. Also at the Cooper Gallery on Saturday, you can make your own Easter flowers. Inspired by Betty Woodman’s creations, create your own fabulous flowers to take home for Easter. This starts at 10.30am, and tickets can be found at www.eventbrite.co.uk and search for Create in Clay: Easter Flowers. And to finish off your Saturday, head off to the Metrodome to see some brilliant American Wrestling. For the eleventh year running, see some of the best wrestlers in the business as they partake in the first ever, ‘ELIMINATION’ match. It would be perfect for a great night out for all the family. Tickets can be bought online at, www.worldwidepromotions.co.uk or call the ticket office on 730060. Then on Sunday, head over to Worsbrough Mill for a milling demonstration where you can see milling in action. See how techniques worked from the 17th and 19th century. The demonstration starts at 11am and entry is free.
Nightlife ON April 26, as part of the April Fool’s Comedy Festival, join Phil Ellis and Freddy Quinne for night of laughter at the Legends Bar. Phil Ellis is a winner of the Edinburgh Awards Panel Prize for his show, ‘Funz and Gamez’ and is a highly regarded comedian. Freddy Quinne is a natural storyteller and a great comic. He always seems at home when performing to audiences, mixing banter and crowd work to get an hilarious result. Tickets can be found online at www.eventbrite.co.uk and search for Phil Ellis and Freddy Quinne. The show starts at 8pm.
This is rated as an 18 performance. And on April 27, enjoy more laughter as Stephen Bailey comes to Barnsley at the Electric Theatre in Barnsley College on his ‘Can’t Think Straight’ tour. Stephen is a working-class, gay and a Northern comic where he delivers a friendly and open brand of gossipy humour and is one of the most enjoyable acts on the UK circuit today. To book, visit www.barnsleycivic.co.uk or call the box office on 327000. The show starts at 7.30pm. This is rated as a 16 performance.

Tomb Raider reboot fails to deliver a kick TOMB RAIDER (12A) Directed by: Roar Uthaug Starring: Alicia Vikander, Walton Goggins, Kristin Scott Thomas TOMB Raider is a relic of not just video game history, but action cinema. Angelina Jolie’s take on the titular gun-toting heroine was a lot of style and very little substance, but not entirely unenjoyable. In 2013, the game series was rebooted. It made Lara a woman beyond a pair of hot pants and pistols. This film, an adaptation of that reboot, succeeds in that sense. With Oscar winner Alicia Vikander in lead, it follows Lara in her early 20s, before she has raided any tombs. Her father has been missing presumed dead for almost a decade, having disappeared while searching for an ancient Japanese legend. Pressure is on from her guardian Anna (Scott Thomas) for Lara to sign documents declaring him dead and giving her access to his fortune. But Lara is determined to keep hope for her father alive. When she finds a fresh lead on
his possible location, it sends her across the globe and to a long-forgotten island. Vikander handles the bumps and scrapes of Lara’s adventure capably, and sells the athleticism necessary to make some of her feats of survival even remotely possible. She also gives her some emotional chops, necessary for the trauma this action romp inflicts on her. Set pieces from the video game have been lifted and recreated whole-sale in places, such as one memorable moment involving the wreck of a vintage airplane, a waterfall and a parachute. They are capably handled and a scene early in the film, where Lara – moonlighting as a delivery biker – engages in a cycle chase through the centre of London is a stand out. But the pace does slacken in the middle. Her fight for survival should be filled with peril, but instead you are left waiting for something to happen. She takes plenty of bumps and bruises, and an encounter with a particularly sharp twig is wince-inducing, but you never get the sense she
is ever in any real danger. Part of that is she is coming up against a relatively generic band of mercenaries, led by Walton Goggins as Matthias. Goggins does a fine line in villains, and this one is supposed to be driven by a similar desperation to escape the island, a place he is trapped by his employers until he achieves his mission. But all his desperation and frustration seems to translate into a leader bored with his role, waiting for the solution to his problem to fall into his lap. There may be plenty of dynamite in his group’s excavations but there is very little fire in his belly. Thankfully, things become far more interesting in the final act, once Lara actually gets to partake in some activities relevant to the title. It may be damning with faint praise but Tomb Raider could have turned out far worse than this. There is enough promise here, and in Alicia Vikander’s lead turn, that it would not be unwelcome for them to dig out a sequel. ★★★★★

THE new Land Rover Explore mobile phone is the toughest phone in the world, built to work in places other phones can’t reach. The mobile, inspired by Land Rover’s rugged ‘go anywhere’ 4x4s for those with an adventurous spirit, is capable of operating and navigating in extreme conditions for two full days with the screen on constantly. Battery life can be doubled by using an Adventure Pack that also boosts the reliability and accuracy of the GPS signal and improves the mapping capabilities. The ultra-durable phone is powered by a super powerful 4000m Ah battery with a factory fitted screen protector and protective case than can survive underwater to 1.8 metres including salt water.
It can cope with extreme temperatures from freezing cold to blistering heat, thermal shock, intense humidity and vibration exposure. The full HD five inch screen can be controlled even when wet and with gloved hands and has instant access to weather information and mapping data, plus its own compass and SOS light making it the perfect phone for hiking, biking, skiing or off-road adventures. The phone is fully compatible with all Land Rover in-car Apps and works as well in the city as it does in the great outdoors. It is available with hardware packs, including an additional battery and bike mount. Developed by Land Rover and the Bullitt Group, the Explore phone with Adventure Pack costs £599.
Don’t take a chance at wheel ROAD safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging drivers to avoid eating and drinking while at the wheel. Attempting to eat or drink while driving is a distraction estimated to double a driver’s risk of being involved in a crash, according to recent research. Additionally, it’s an offence punishable either by fixed penalty ticket or under careless driving legislation. GEM road safety officer Neil Worth said: “The Highway Code tells us that we must avoid distractions such as eating and drinking when we are driving. That’s because anything that takes our attention away from the driving task will increase our risk of collision. “However, too many drivers don’t see it as a problem to unwrap a pasty, sip a scalding hot coffee or glug from a large juice carton on a journey. “Driving is a complex enough task already. So trying to do anything else at the same time just makes the journey riskier because we’re not fully
focused on the driving task. If something then goes wrong, we’re likely to react more slowly because our attention is elsewhere – and when we do react, there’s the food item or beverage to deal with, too. “Good, experienced drivers accept that eating and drinking at the wheel are dangerous, so they won’t allow these distractions to compromise safety.” GEM offers the following points for reducing risk on journeys: ■ Make sure you are always in full control of your car. That means both hands – and all your brain – on the driving task. Focusing on anything else is a distraction that will increase the risk of a collision. ■ Plan your journeys so there’s time for snack and drinks breaks built in. ■ Stop somewhere safe, such as a proper parking area or motorway service station. ■ Don’t believe any drivers who say they can multi-task safely while driving.
