SCOUTING is growing in popularity with more young people, including girls, continuing to join. According to the Scout Association’s latest annual membership figures, the increase in young women and girls is especially strong, with 240 joining the movement in South Yorkshire last year, an increase of 11.4 per cent. There are now 144,000 females in the Scout Association altogether, the highest proportion since the scout movement first welcomed women and girls into all of its sections 25 years ago. Including adult volunteers, the total scouting membership across South Yorkshire stands at 8,934, a seven per cent rise in the last 12 months. The impressive growth in young people joining scouting means there is a greater need for adult volunteers than ever before. Despite 273 more adults joining in the past year, there is still a huge need for more volunteers to cope with increased demand from young people Alice Derbyshire, County Youth Commissioner for South Yorkshire Scouts, said: “I love scouting and I always enjoy the adventures that scout volunteers have helped us plan. I’ve picked up some really helpful life skills along the way like team building, planning and how to communicate with people. Scouting has also helped me grow in confidence and I have enjoyed learning new skills alongside my scouting friends and this would not have been possible without the support of the many adult volunteers in scouting. I’d definitely encourage young people of all ages to join.” Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, said: “I am super proud to see so many young peo-

I am excited to see scout numbers continue to rise across the UK, especially the numbers of girls. “What I’m most pleased about is that scouts across the UK are putting their time into helping their local communities. “Through our A Million Hands cam-

paign, we are pledging one million hands to supporting four of the biggest social issues currently facing the UK and the wider world, but we can’t do it on our own. “We want all young people to come and give scouting a try and to get involved. This is how we can all play a vital role in shaping tomorrow’s world for the better.”

Make a cake for chance to meet Queen Councillor slams illegal motorcycle riders WIN the opportunity for your school to visit Buckingham Palace by making a special birthday cake for Her Majesty The Queen. Following the Cook for The Queen competition for children that was held for the Diamond Jubilee, the organisers, Love British Food, are inviting schools to join in this summer’s royal celebrations and commemorate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday by making a cake for The Queen. The Queen’s official birthday is being celebrated on the weekend of June 11 and 12. The finale takes place on the Sunday when the Mall will be transformed for Britain’s largest ever street party. Schools are invited to join in the national celebrations by holding a fun birthday party, the centre piece of which will be a special birthday cake for Her Majesty made by the children themselves. The competition sets a specific challenge: as well as making a cake that is spectacular to look at and is decorated in a manner fit for royalty, it must be made with healthy ingredients. We want the delicious flavours of the ingredients to sing out in your cakes and for sugar and marg to take a back seat. Photos of the top five winning cakes will be made into a montage and presented to Her Majesty The Queen as a birthday souvenir and the winning school will be treated to

A COUNCILLOR has slammed illegal bike riding following the consfication of one in Royston. Coun Michael Clements’ comments come after a 15-year-old from Royston had been caught for the second time in a few days riding an illegal motorcycle on April 3. He said: “Illegal bikes do nothing but

discredit responsible bikers, damage property and cause potential injury to riders and others.” The bike was found in the fields between Pinfold Lane, Royston, and the fishing lake at Carlton. Local police were mounting an anti-illegal bike operation that day so responded quickly.

COMPETITION: Win a trip to Buckingham Palace by baking a cake for the Queen’s 90th birthday. an exclusive trip to Buckingham Palace, during British Food Fortnight, September 17 and October 2. 3. Share and eat the cake, have a royal birthday party for the class or the whole school. You could make it a fancy dress party with all the children dressing up to commemorate different features of Her Majesty’s reign: The Queen as a child, her wedding, Coronation, overseas tours, her love of horses and her corgis. 4. Send up to five photos of the cake, of the children making it and your royal birthday party, plus a description of the recipe and ingredients you used and how and why you adapted it. Yorkshire Puddings beat food rivals to top dish ...

POPULAR FAVOURITE: Yorkshire puddings have been named the UK’s favourite regional dish.

JOHN LONGLEY I KITCHEN & BATHROOM DESIGN

YORKSHIRE puddings beat Cornish pasties and Bakewell tarts in the battle to be Britain’s best regional dish. It’s finally time to settle the score between Yorkshire and Lancashire, with Yorkshire puddings coming miles ahead of the Lancashire hotpot in a nationwide search to find the UK’s best regional dish. A recent study, by UK diners’ club Gourmet Society, has found that Yorkshire puddings, a staple of the traditional British Sunday roast, beat Eccles Cakes, the Lancashire hotpot, Cheddar cheese and many others to win the title of Britain’s best regional dish, voted for by food lovers across the country. The top five favourite UK regional dishes are: 1. Yorkshire puddings. 2. Cornish pasties. 3. Devon cream tea. 4. Bakewell tart. 5. Cheddar cheese. Despite haggis being the most wellknown regional dish, with 73 per cent having heard of it, it’s also the nation’s least favourite regional dish – 15 per cent of people voted the dish, which consists of sheep’s pluck (heart, liver and lungs) as their least favourite. The East End’s jellied eels came a close second, with 13 per cent voting

it as their least favourite. So which regions stand by their dish? Despite Yorkshire puddings being the overall winner, the survey found that many people are still loyal to the dish of their home town. More than a quarter of people in Belfast voted Irish soda bread as their favourite, while 37 per cent of Scots living in Glasgow voted theirs as haggis. Top five loyal regions are: 1. Yorkshire. 2. Glasgow. 3. Edinburgh. 4. Belfast. 5. Liverpool. Matt Turner, CEO of Gourmet Society, said: “Brits are spoilt for choice when it comes to trying regional dishes from around the UK, so it’s nice to see that plenty of regions are still sticking to their roots and backing their local dish. “I often eat all over the country when working, but there is certainly nothing better than coming back to Yorkshire to enjoy a proper Yorkshire pudding with a Sunday roast. “We can understand why it has been voted Britain’s favourite, but it is nice to see a range of dishes from every part of the UK appearing in the top five.”

Artist makes guest appearance to launch exhibition in Sheffield CRITICALLY acclaimed artist Richard Rowan will be making a guest appearance at a Sheffield gallery in April to unveil a newly-curated exhibition of his work. Rowan’s latest collection, ‘New Horizons’, captures stunning landscape settings on a ‘canvas’ of glass – the artist’s preferred material. He will be appearing at Castle Galleries in Meadowhall on Saturday between 1pm and 4pm, to meet guests and explain more about his unusual technique. The powerful new body of work captures the beauty of nature: from glowing sunsets, to dramatic bolts of lightning piercing through brooding mist, to bright, luminescent cloud formations reminiscent of the Northern Lights. His scenes are also inspired from his travels to diverse places such as the Lake District and Hanoi. Speaking of his new collection, Richard

said: “From early in my teenage years a quote has never left my mind: ‘Life’s too short. “If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you may miss it.’ I’m looking all the time. “I get annoyed when I see a spectacular sky and people around me are doing their day to day routines, missing what is happening above their heads. “Painting oil on glass can make you want to tear your hair out, but it’s also satisfying at the same time. When I sit down to paint, I want to paint better than the last time; pushing the boundaries of what I can do.” The exhibition of Richard’s work will then run for a further week from Saturday. G Pieces can also be bought from Castle Fine Art and Castle Galleries’ network of high street stores across the UK or online at www.castlegalleries.com

Annual Big Read coming to town next month Advice for motorcyclists

caught up in a collision IF you are a motorcycle driver then read these top tips from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), advising riders what they should do following a collision. I Firstly, ensure you and your passengers are not severely injured, and if you can, move to a safe position. If that’s too difficult, warn oncoming traffic, and if anyone has sustained serious injuries call for an ambulance straight away. I A first aid course through your work or a recreational course such as ‘Biker Down’ is a real benefit. The basics are breathing first then bleeding — if your casualty is breathing don’t remove their crash helmet they may have a neck injury. Reassurance is an important part so let them know help is on the way and keep on talking to them. I Where everyone is safe and third parties are involved you will need to exchange details, the law requires

names and addresses of the drivers, the names and addresses of the owners of the vehicle and insurance details. I Taking some pictures of the positions of vehicles involved and any damage caused can be useful. If possible get details of any witnesses or emergency services at the scene. I If for any reason you didn’t get the chance to exchange details you must report the incident to the police. This should be done as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours. Richard Gladman, head of driving and riding standards at IAM, said: “Be mindful of moving traffic around you and make sure you try and move away from busy roads where possible. “Being prepared for the worst case scenario is important — and by taking these simple precautions you can make things far easier and a lot less stressful afterwards.”

Charity’s appeal for volunteers THE UK’s oldest military charity, SSAFA, is appealing for volunteers to provide support for those in need. The charity, which has been providing vital support for our troops, veterans and their families for more than 130 years with its network of volunteers who support more than 55,000 people from the Armed Forces community each year. SSAFA is in need of more volunteers across Yorkshire, and is looking for volunteers to go out in the local community and provide a vital first line of support to those in need. Locally SSAFA has seen an increase in requests for help.

This is due to a number of reasons, including the fact that currently almost 50 per cent of the ex-service community in the UK are aged 75 plus. There has also been an increase in younger veterans and their families coming forward for help. The charity is appealing for anyone who is interested, to join the SSAFA’s volunteer ranks, particularly those who have time to give something back to those who have already given so much. They urge anyone who is interested in joining their local SSAFA team to visit www.ssafa.org.uk/newrecruits.

THE Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival has launched its annual Big Read and it is coming to Barnsley in May. Readers across the north are being invited to celebrate the life and work of one of the world’s greatest writers, PD James. The Big Read initiative aims to encourage as many people as possible to celebrate great crime writing by reading the same novel at the same time, and 2016’s Big Read novel is An Unsuitable Job for a Woman by PD James. An Unsuitable Job for a Woman introduces Cordelia Gray, the first modern female detective in crime fiction. At the time of creating Cordelia, PD James worked as a civil servant in the crime department of the Home Office. Regarding this novel, she wrote: “I wanted to have a young heroine of courage and intelligence who faces the problems of life with a determination to be successful in a job which everyone else thinks she won’t be able to do.” The Big Read begins on May 9 and runs until May 13, with free events in libraries across the north with Festival Reader in Residence and bestselling crime author, Mari Hannah. Mari said. “It’s a particular honour to be taking PD James on the Big Read, not just because of her brilliance and legendary status but because of the novel itself. An Unsuitable Job for a Woman is a classic crime novel introducing a lead character ahead of her time. “ PD James was a true pioneer who gave the rest of us something

It costs less to heat a new-build home STAYING warm comes at a price for home owners in Barnsley, with many preferring to make a brew rather than turn the heating up. With temperatures plummeting to as low as minus three degrees in Barnsley recently, local house builder Barratt Homes has revealed that despite spending an average of £914 on heating bills a year, 71 per cent of Yorkshire adults still feel cold in their homes. According to the research from the

house builder, the biggest influence on heating bills is the age of the property, with typical new-build home owners in the region saving on average £600 per year when it comes to heating bills. To demonstrate the significant differences in heat loss, Barratt Homes conducted thermal imaging of a pre-owned and new build home – highlighting heat escape routes in older properties compared to a new build home.

The research also revealed that 68 per cent of adults would rather put on extra clothes than reach for the thermostat, with 54 per cent saying they’d put on the kettle instead – highlighting the reluctance to spend yet more on heating bills. The research found that the hallway is the coldest room in the house for Yorkshire residents, compared to the kitchen, bedroom or bathroom in other areas of the UK.

STRAY of the WEEK

Calling all amateur archaeologists

THIS week’s Stray of the Week is Thomas from Radar Dog Rescue. Thomas is a lurcher of around seven and he is Radar’s longest resident. He is a handsome boy who has been waiting in the kennels for more than a year. As he is a sight hound he cannot be rehomed with any small animals or dogs as he is likely to chase them, but he is fine around older children and would make a great family companion. Sharon Jones, of Radar, said: “This friendly lurcher loves cuddles, affection and dog treats and he likes nothing better than to be out walking in the fresh air and lazing around afterwords. “We believe Thomas has been a working dog at some point ans suffered severe pain with a lip and chin injury that was left untreated and caused him to have an overbite. “All he wants is a comfy sofa and some well deserved home comforts.” I For more information or to offer Thomas a home call 07933645168 or email radardogrescue@mail.com

Mortgage service provider gives £20,000 to help young people THE UK’s leading third-party mortgage service provider, HML, has donated £20,000 to The Money Charity to fund money management workshops for young people across Yorkshire. The donation will help the UK’s only dedicated financial capability charity deliver 100 hours of workshops to around 2,500 young people in schools and colleges across the county. HML chief executive Andrew Jones said: “Helping to teach money management to children at a young age means they are far more likely to find financial stability and success later in life. “We’re delighted to be working with The Money Charity to improve financial wellbeing across Yorkshire; as mortgage ser-

Around the Garden

ADVERTISING FEATURE

It’s time to prepare your garden ready for long summer days ... MAY is not far around the corner and it is packed full of things for gardeners to see and do, and one of simplest starter ideas for anyone new to gardening is to create a herb garden. From sage to thyme, rosemary to clipped bay and flowering chives, you can combine a variety of herbs in one space that will produce long-lasting displays as well as regular pickings for the kitchen. Successful herb garden designs often define the space using brick pavers, dividing-up the area with small paths to provide easy access for picking, but for small spaces herbs can also be grown in pots. Low-growing thyme is a herb garden favourite, per-

fect for making a herb carpet or filling gaps between paving. Mint is a versatile herb but best kept contained to prevent it invading borders and flower beds, so grow it in a pot or large bottomless bucket. Rosemary is a hardy shrub with aromatic leaves and has a long flowering season, and chives provide an ornamental floral display to any border or planter. As many herbs have Mediterranean origins they like being in the sun, so the timing is perfect as May sees more sunshine and longer days – which means more time for gardening. As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in

leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings. Spring is well underway now, and it’s a busy time for the garden. Spring bulbs are making way for the buds of summer flowers, filled with the promise of colour to come. This is the month to plant summer bedding in borders or containers. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring, cutting off any dead and damaged stems and then remove about a third of the oldest flowering stems. May is also the time to plant out vegetable plugs and seedlings. If you sowed the seeds indoors or under cover, make sure to harden the plants off. May is the month when warm days begin to beckon tender plants onto the terrace, but beware the cooler night temperatures, which

will turn them purple at the edges. The process of hardening-off involves gradually accustoming plants to the rigours of outdoor life, and should not be rushed, but taken in orderly stages. Move plants from the greenhouse to the frame: prop the frame light open during the day, then shut it at

£50k publishing deal up for You need to get your dog microchipped grabs for first-time authors THE couple behind Britain’s biggest Book Club, Richard and Judy, are offering a £50,000 publishing deal for first-time authors. Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan have launched a lucrative competition to find a new bestselling writer. The winner, who must be a first-time author, will win a £50,000 publishing deal with Bonnies Zaffre and receive specialist advice from literary agency Furniss Lawton. ‘Search for a Bestseller’, supported by WHSmith, opened to unpublished writers earlier this month, for writers to submit 10,000 words, plus a synopsis of the novel. After leaving their hugely successful TV series, where they fronted a weekly 15-minutes book club, the couple teamed up with WHSmith in 2010 to continue to share their passion for books. From day one, the Richard and Judy Book Club broke WHSmith records when its first recommendation, Sister, by Rosamund Lupton, made number

one paperback and become the fastest selling title by a debut author in WHSmiths’ 200-year history. Since then, the Book Club has gone from strength to strength showcasing an abundance of writing talent, from debut novelists to highly-acclaimed authors. Aspiring authors have until May 31 to submit their entries via Richard and Judy’s website. The couple will then lead the selection process, helped by editors Binnier Zaffre and agents at Furniss Lawton. Richard said: “Judy and I are so very excited to host the ‘Search for a Bestseller’ competition, it gives us a chance to keep doing what we both love — reading and discovering a fantastic title for our devoted Book Club audience. “We can’t wait to read their submissions.” I For more information or to submit your entry visit www.richardandjudy.co.uk/rjbestseller

YOU could be breaking the law if you do not have your dog microchipped. From April 6, all dogs aged eight weeks and over in the UK have been legally required to have a microchip, and vets have launched a campaign to help dog owners understand and follow this new law. To help dog owners check if their dog has a microchip, vets are increasing awareness of the new law and helping owners understand

more about the legal requirements. Dr Huw Stacey, director of clinical services at Vets4Pets, said: “In just a few weeks’ time, tens of thousands of dog owners could be breaking the law and facing a fine of up to £500. “But pet owners shouldn’t worry about microchipping their pet. “It is an easy and simple procedure. “A microchip is about the same size of a grain of rice and is injected

under the skin at the scruff of a dog’s neck. “Each microchip has a 15-digit code which is unique to the pet and can be read through a special scanner.” The new legislation is designed to prevent illegal breeding of dogs, bring owners to account for a dog’s aggressive behaviour and reunite lost pets with their rightful owners quickly.

Baking challenge to help heroes GET your best apron on and bake for heroes to raise money for our heroes who need it. Help for Heroes is launching its ‘Bake for Heroes’ campaign this year which is encouraging people to bake to raise money for vital funds. You could get friends and neighbours over for tea and a slice of cake in exchange for a donation, or hold a bake sale at work or school. Register and fundraise for the chance to win a Kenwood kMix, which has been donated by Debenhams. A free fundraising pack will be sent to every Bake for Heroes organiser to help make each event a success. The packs include collecting boxes, a sweepstake game, bunting, balloons and pricing stickers. Emma Parry, CEO and cofounder of Help for Heroes, said: “Help for Heroes is all about ‘doing your bit’ and this event is a wonderful example of people rallying support and having a great deal of fun while they raise

money. The money you raise is needed, it is being used and it is hugely appreciated.” The Bake for Heroes

campaign is on until May 2. To register or for more information visit www.bakeforheroes.org.uk or call 01980 846459.
