Petrol ‘charge’ gets the WAB debate going... SUPERMARKET petrol pumps are planning to introduce a £99 pre-authorisation when paying at the pump instead of at a kiosk. The “pre-authorisation charge” was introduced to ensure drivers have enough money to cover the amount of fuel they put in their cars. Most ‘pay at pump’ services charge £1, which debits back into your account once the amount of fuel brought clears. We asked you for your thoughts and these were your responses... Michael Hart: Pay at the kiosk to avoid paying the £99 pre authorisation charge. People are making mountains out of mole hills. Walk the additional 30 steps to stop you being ‘out of pocket’ for a few days. Craig Severn: The amount is a pre authorisation amount, so it never actually comes out of your account. This STOPS people going overdrawn, not the other way around. With a £1 pre authorisation, if you only have £20 in your account but spend £30 then you’ll be £10 overdrawn. This new process won’t allow that because it will only authorise what you have (up to the maximum £99). Felisia Greenhalgh: The whole idea of pay at the pump though is to reduce queues and for people who may work night shifts etc. to go when the tills are shut. It’s a daft idea that I think will lose them a lot of custom. Evie Brakes: Worst idea ever! Us young people that go to put £20 in car and only have £60 in our bank account, what are we supposed to do? Go into overdraft which will charge us daily just for £20 worth of fuel? Andy Train: It’s not a ‘charge’ it’s a pre-authorisation to ensure enough funds are available. The only thing that is charged is what you put in the tank and it’s been around for ages it’s not only just being introduced. There may be a small wait for the authorisation to drop from the system as soon as the actual cost of fuel is taken from the account. Ian Gibson: And why £99 not £30 or £40 if they have to, but can’t understand why at all really, and what about the young ones that are on their last week of the month and have only just enough money in their bank for their last fuel up of the month?

Then there’s the motor bikers and scooter users that would be lucky to get 15 to 20 litres in. It’s a pure insult to motorists. James Greveson: The concept I understand but as people have said, some don’t have that sort of spare cash. Especially after bills. It will cause more hassle then what it’s worth. Chris Smith: All it is for is to make sure you are able to pay £99 but if you only take £40 will only debit £40. If you don’t have £99 in your account and only have £40 just go to the cash point or pay in store. John Richard Dowson: We have seen this in France where many fuel stations are unmanned and it can take weeks to get the 100 euro ‘authorisation’ is refunded. This is nothing less than theft. Lilly Rose Foster: I don’t see why they would take £99 instead of taking the amount you put in the tank. If you have the £99 they should just take the £20 or so that you put in. It’s a waste of time in my opinion. Jodie Emily McNally: Don’t use pay at pump anymore! Jessica Brooke: Half of the pumps if not more are usually pay at pump only. I can only imagine the queue’s

for the other pumps to allow you to pay at kiosk to avoid paying a ridiculous £99?. Angela Hayes: Blame it on the fraudsters that have been abusing the authorisation process and costing the banks millions of pounds a year! If you don’t have that much in your account you will need to go pay at the counter. Nicola Morgan: Blimey, it used to be 99p! It’s a good way for people to go in the kiosk and buy a few bits. Nick Jackson: People need to read the article before commenting, it’s actually a good thing to stop you going overdrawn. Iasmina Georgiana: But what if £100 it’s the only money you have on card and you want to put some petrol in car and buy groceries from that money? You won’t be able to do it because they take all your money as guarantee. That’s plain stupid. It’s a nightmare to go to petrol stations during the day, you can be there for half an hour at least! If everyone starts paying at the kiosk it will be at least an hours wait. Not all petrol stations have the kiosks open 24 hours, so how is that fair?

Memories made at unique cafe SOUTH Yorkshire Fire & Rescue’s Cudworth fire station are hosting their second memory cafe, which supports the growing numbers of people who live with dementia in Barnsley. The monthly event, which are held on the third Friday of every month, provide an opportunity for people living with dementia and their carers to meet in a safe, managed environment and to take part in activities to promote mental and physical wellbeing, such as chair based exercises. Officers believe the project will benefit the fire service by providing a vital link with one of its key target groups in terms of vulnera-

bility to fire. Area Manager Steve Helps, said: "This latest project is the perfect illustration where fire service resources are helping to improve the lives of one of the most vulnerable groups in society.” The next session of the memo-

ry cafe takes place on Friday May 18 from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Cudworth fire station, Tumbling Lane, Barnsley, S71 5RZ. It is open to anyone living with dementia and their carers, or any older people feeling isolated and wanting to make new friends.

Show you can bake!

Thatt was Tha was a the WAB WAB A week week that th hat was... was a ...

We were quite shell shocked in Tarn...! WELL it was almost an explosive end to the week! The World War II shell that was found in the canal near ASDA had Tarn at a standstill from Old Mill Lane and the office was full of anticipation was he waited to hear whether it was a live shell or not. Thankfully it wasn’t. The potential £99 pre-authorisation for paying for fuel at the pump also had you all talking this week. For me, I am with the majority of you when you say that £99 is very steep but I do understand that it is just a

BARNSLEY bakers and cake enthusiasts are being asked to ‘rise’ to the challenge of the Big Barnsley Bake Off 2018. The competition, organised by Barnsley Hospice to raise money for patient care, takes place throughout June and July. This is the third year that individuals, schools, businesses and community groups have been invited to host their own tea party, cake sale, bake-off event or picnic. Inspired by TV’s The Great British Bake Off and launched to coincide with the new series of Bake Off: The Professionals, the competition will see awards presented to the ‘star baker’ (the person or group that makes the most money), and the most creative bake. Last year’s Big Barnsley Bake Off raised £4261 and the hospice fundraising team are hoping to top the total in 2018. The Big Barnsley Bake Off 2018 is sponsored by White’s Bakery Limited, based in Worsborough Bridge. Anyone interested should contact Bethan on 323613 or email:

Yob’s rampage leads to prison A MAN who went on a ‘violent rampage’ across Goldthorpe is now serving more than four years behind bars after neighbourhood officers found him hiding on an allotment. Danny Lee Green, 22, of Welfare View, Goldthorpe, rode his motorbike around Goldthorpe one evening in March last year, carrying an extendable baton, which he threatened numerous people with, injuring one. He chased a man, thought to be known to him to the BP garage where he threatened staff and smashed the window. Thirty minutes later he went to The Rusty Dudley pub on Doncaster Road and had a heated argument with a man outside the pub before other people came outside to try and diffuse the situation. As they did, Green struck one man with the metal baton, breaking his arm as the victim tried to defend himself.

Green appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on May 2, where he pleaded guilty to assault, possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage. He was jailed for a total of four years and two months. PC Andrew Cliffe, from Barnsley CID said: “This was by all accounts a traumatic incident for those involved and could’ve resulted in serious injury. I’m pleased we’ve been able to bring Green before the courts and that he has been handed a substantial sentence for his crimes.”

7 PEOPLE in five stores on Queen Street in the town centre had to be evacuated after the fire alarm was set off. Staff and customers from TUI, Holland and Barratt, Costa Coffee, Specsavers and Barclays Bank were evacuated just after 3pm on Thursday after the alarm went off. Firefighters were sent to the scene as a precaution to ensure that none of the blocks were in danger. A PCSO said: “We evacuated everyone as a precaution. It’s better to be safe than sorry.” All buildings were clear and staff and the public were allowed back into their stores at 3:25pm

A day in WAB history... Reds parade through town after play offs WAB History takes a look through the archives at WAB news from years gone by. This week, we’re taking a look at May 2016... Thursday May 5 Arrests made after cannabis found in Barnsley property FIVE people were arrested after police seized cannabis with a ‘significant street value’ from a Barnsley property. A warrant was executed at a building in Race Street, off Racecommon Road, on Tuesday May 3. Police say that a quantity of cannabis plants, estimated to be of significant street value, were recovered from the building. Three men and two women who were arrested have since been bailed pending further enquiries. Monday May 16 Barnsley take a step closer to Wembley BARNSLEY took a step closer to a second Wembley trip in a season on Saturday after thrashing Walsall 3-0 at Oakwell. A Jason Demetriou own goal bang on half time, followed by a Sam Winnall double early in the second half means that Walsall will have to beat the Reds by four clear goals in the second leg on Thursday - or at least 3-0 to take the game to extra time - to stop Barnsley in their quest for League One promotion. Should Barnsley see out the tie, they will play at Wembley for the second time this season, likely against Milwall, who beat Bradford 3-1 in League One’s second

play-off semi-final. Friday May 27 Hoyland market to officially open this weekend HOYLAND’S new market will officially open this weekend. Saturday, May 28 will see an official celebratory opening. The new site has 30 stalls, three kiosks and parking for 26 cars. Traders moved to the new market off Southgate last Saturday and opened for business to local shoppers. Keith Batty, a Hoyland market trader said: The market is well located and looks really good. It’s nice and compact with no empty spaces and a lot of thought has been put into the design of the stalls. I’ve had a lot of very positive comments from

customers as well.” Sunday May 29 Open top bus parade for Barnsley AN open top bus parade will take place in the town centre tomorrow after Barnsley secured promotion at Wembley. The parade will make its way from Oakwell Stadium at 4.15pm tomorrow evening (Monday, May 30) to Barnsley Town Hall via Grove Street, Pontefract Road, Kendray Street, Eldon Street, Church Street and Sadler Gate. Fans are invited to join in with the celebrations lining the streets of the bus route before heading to the town hall for the balcony appearance at approximately 5pm to 5.30pm. Fans are encouraged to help paint the town

red by bringing flags and wearing their team colours. Reds’ Head Coach Paul Heckingbottom, said: “What an incredible season it has been for everyone associated with our club. It was another proud and historic moment for the town at Wembley, and now we can’t wait to get back to Barnsley and celebrate with the fans at the heart of the town centre. “The atmosphere at Wembley was phenomenal you got behind us throughout the game and that support was crucial in getting the win and securing promotion back to the Championship!“On behalf of all the players and staff, thank you for your fantastic support throughout the season

and we look forward to seeing you at the town hall on Monday for what promises to be a big promotion party!” Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Linda Burgess, said: “We’re really proud to be able to welcome our home team onto the town hall balcony for the second time this season. Their promotion to the Championship is wonderful finale.”

Mother’s love shines through in Breaking In BREAKING IN (15) Directed by: James McTeigue Starring: Gabrielle Union, Billy Burke AFTER her father dies suddenly, Shaun Russell (Union) and her children Jasmine and Glover head to his isolated – and grandiose – country home to prepare it for sale. Their presence wasn’t counted on by professional criminal Eddie (Burke), who brings a team of robbers to raid her father’s safe and hopefully make off with his fortune. Eddie and the gang take Shaun’s children hostage as they ransack the place. And it is down to her to battle the criminals and the hi-tech security system, to break back in and rescue her family. It’s a simple premise elevated by Union’s determined central performance. Where the rest of the cast are relegated to rote parts you have certainly seen before – the unhinged wild

card, the criminal with a conscience, the tech savvy teen – Union weighs down Shaun with hints at a complicated past. But not even that explains how she gained the guerilla skills she employs here. There are stories of women who are able to lift cars when their child is in danger; here, Union transforms into a sprinting, female MacGyver. There are plenty of references to how as a mother, she will stop at nothing to leave her kids in danger. But the criminals are the ones who should feel threatened here, with Union using the surrounding woodland to plan her attack on the swanky pad. Once the basic premise is established, all previous attempts to weigh this down with any form of complex family history fade away. It becomes a long game of cat and mouse, with the criminals and Shaun alternating between the two roles. Despite being quite a

grand building, you struggle to get an idea of its architecture as people race around the automatic lights and pressure sensitive window shutters. But things hurtle along at a pace where you will have

little time to think of the logistics of the situation, as Shaun scales bannisters, rappels on the rooftop and fights tooth and nail to get her kids back. Union gives good stoicism and a strong physicality,

which lends Shaun some credibility. Burke, on the other hand, is given relatively little to work with in head criminal Eddie – and it shows, with what was probably intended to be a cool, collected oper-

ator coming across as mostly bored. It’s schlock to be certain. But Breaking In offers a thought-free escape to the cinema. ★★★★★
