Is the new fining idea a bit rubbish? BARNSLEY council, along with councils across the UK were given the right to charge up to £150 on the spot fine if a person is caught littering. Do you think this is fair? Should more be done to keep Barnsley clean? We asked your opinion and these were your responses... Phil James: It’s not enough. People should be fined £500 minimum that way it would act as a stronger deterrent. Any funds from fines should be ring fenced and used to clean up the mass amounts of rubbish. Sadia Kamran: Instead of fines more bins should be put up around town or more signs reminding people to pick up litter after themselves or employ more people to keep the town clean. Hazel Frampton: A bigger problem is people throwing out rubbish from their car windows and fly tipping. It’s as though the people that do this think it’s beneath them to deal with their own rubbish and someone will clear up after them. It’s disgusting, just riding around in the car and seeing all the hedge bottoms full of rubbish annoys me. Diane Hartshorn: £150 for dropping a tab end? How about come and visit the streets where I live near the town centre and

charge for the mess left there? Carpets, dog waste, takeaway rubbish, beer cans, bags of rubbish just left everywhere. David Wyatt: Top and bottom of it is don’t drop litter simple as. put rubbish in your pocket if you can’t find a bin then when you do put your rubbish in the bin because I am sure people at home don’t drop litter all over their floors. Amy Fox: Absolutely no need to throw litter on the floor! Stop moaning, stop being lazy, put whatever it is in your pocket or bag and wait until you come across a bin or better yet go into a shop and ask them to bin it for you. Christine Nixon: I was brought up to keep hold of my litter until I reached a bin, or I took it home with me. People need to be more considerate of others and stop only thinking of themselves. Keith Beverley: There’s no reason for anybody to drop anything on the floor, it’s just folk being too bone idle to walk to a bin or wait while they are near one!? Michael Rooke: Totally agree with this, there’s just no need whatsoever to drop litter. However, there does need to be more bins. Julie Jefferies: Fully agree with

this. Litter doesn’t have to be a problem, if people dispose of their litter in the correct way. Cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and takeaway packaging are the main items I see dropped on the ground, despite there being litter bins. The ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign needs to make a return. Andrew Lee Wilson: Of course it’s fair, if you don’t like it, don’t drop it. Same goes for people who don’t pick up after their dogs dump their load, should be fined a grand for doing that. Toni Stokes: It’s not about whether people should be fined or not – I agree they should. But is £150 reasonable? I don’t think it is. Pat Jones: If they see someone dropping litter they should tell them to pick it up. If they refuse then yes fine them. As for asking people to empty their pockets, definitely not!? Richard Matthews: Bang to right. Or alternatively make them do litter picking duties for a day with a hi-vis on saying ‘I dropped litter?’ Susan Grimshaw: Good perhaps people will learn to respect their town!

Pick up your litter and take it home... WELL this week seems to ‘ave gone quick! Maybe because we had another four-day week or maybe because the weeks seem to just fly by as soon as January passes! It great to see that the Reds won the derby! There’s hope for us yet and I think our luck is definitely changing. Your opinions on the changes to the law regarding littering was very interesting to read. As a Tarn we need to do our best to keep it clean and be proud of the area we live in. Let’s hope these changes will encourage people to find a bin or take it home and throw their litter away there. And I know I mentioned it last week but if you haven’t got tickets to the April Fools comedy festival I highly recommend you get some! I went to the opening night on Wednesday and saw Bec Hill. It really was such a laugh. Here’s to hoping that this week flies just as quick as last week! I’m counting down to the May bank holiday... Ave a good week! Funnygirl: Bec Hill. Altine

HOME WIN FOR THE REDS: THE home derby certainly didn’t disappoint as the Red’s finally secured their first home win since November against Sheffield United. Barnsley were off to a great start, scoring the first goal of the game after 25 minutes, with Gary Gardener scoring from outside the box following a corner. There was almost a second goal four minutes into the second half by Kieffer Moore however the attempt was saved. The Blades equalised, with a goal by John Fleck. They scored their second goal eight minutes later but the Reds did not let this deter them. Oliver McBurnie equalised in the 74th minute, bringing the game back into business and Tom Bradshaw beautifully ended the game by scoring a header in the 88th minute. Barnsley’s next match will be against Ipswich Town tonight (Tuesday, April 10). Full preview in this weeks Chronicle.

National Pet Month

Pick the right pet... THE KEY to happy pet ownership is choosing the right pet for you and your family. Having a pet is a big responsibility and one which someone considering getting a pet should take seriously. Getting a pet is a really exciting time, but after the newness of picking up your new pet wears off, you need to make sure your animal is well looked after and happy. The key things to consider when choosing a pet are place, time, spend and exercise When you come to place you need to think about whether you have a garden and if it is secure – dogs need regular access to safe and secure outdoor space,

cats also enjoy being outdoors and rabbits and guinea pigs need access to a large run or garden to be happy and healthy. Are you active, do you have the commitment and time to regularly walk a dog? The amount of exercise a dog needs depends on their breed, age and health, with some dogs not needing much in the way of exercise, while others need to walk miles to keep them happy and healthy. You should also think about how much available time you have to spend with your pet. Pets are generally sociable and dogs especially love your company – it’s really important that they aren’t left alone for

longer than four hours as they can become lonely, anxious and distressed. If you factor in walks, training, feeding, cleaning their home and equipment, grooming and visits to the vet, time can start to add up. You also need to think about how much money you can afford to spend on your pet – it’s not just the initial cost of getting a pet to be considered, think also about food, toys, flea

NATIONAL Pet Month is all about celebrating your pets and learning how to look after them properly. National Pet Month takes place between April 1 and May 7 and is a registered charity, which brings together animal welfare charities, professional bodies, pet businesses, schools, youth groups and pet loves, with the trustees being the National Office of Animal Health and Pet Food Manufacturers Association.

Its aims are to promote responsible pet ownership; making people aware of the mutual benefits of living with pets; increasing public awareness of the role of pet care specialists; and raising awareness of the value of working and assistance companion animals. People can take part by spreading the word on responsible pet ownership and raising money for their favourite UK pet charity – such as the Animal Welfare Foundation, Dogs Trust,

big impact and theming activities around pets can also be a great way to engage children in the classroom. The charity has been working with TV vet and author Marc Abraham to develop downloadable resources to use during lesson time, with the Keeping Pets Healthy lesson plan designed for children aged four to seven to help them understand the importance of caring for animals and others. It means children can get involved in learning about responsible pet ownership and welfare, even if their school does not want to organise fundraising activities. Ideas include t-shirt painting, drawing or painting a happy pet, making pet animal mosaics, and designing and making pet masks. Children can also be encouraged to write about their pet and what they need to do to keep them happy and healthy.

National Pet Month Do not rule out rescues... SO you’ve decided you’re having a pet, you’ve decided which animal is best suited to your family – now to go out and get it. And then the choice really starts, do you go to a pet shop, a breeder, or a rescue? Well, it really depends on what sort of animal you want. Do you want to know your pet’s history, what’s its temperament is likely to be with your children? If you’re after a dog that might be really important. Rescue dogs can be fantastic but can be unpredictable because you don’t know their background, which could be a no-no if you have children. However, they can be very rewarding and a trip to a local rescue centre can be a real tearjerker. Some rescue dogs have been mistreated and need extra patience, but most staff and volunteers at rescue centres have taken the time to get to know the animals they are trying to rehome and know exactly what a dog’s quirks and foibles are, and, more importantly, will tell you so you know exactly what you’re getting. Most rescue centres also try to find homes and cats and small animals, such as rabbits and guinea pigs, so don’t rule them out. In Barnsley there are plenty to choose from and most have their own Facebook pages. If you’ve got your heart set on a specific animal, however, and a specific breed, say a French bulldog or a British Blue car, then your best option is to go with a reputable breeder.

Be a responsible owner... RESPONSIBLE pet ownership is one of the key aims of National Pet Month. This means caring properly for your pet, making sure it is safe and secure and also exercised in the appropriate way. So what are the best ways to care for your pets? Dogs ■ Basic training for your puppy using praise and encouragement – socialising; teaching them how to behave appropriately, both inside and outside the house. ■ Opportunity to play – this is a way to learn and also an outlet for their natural behaviours, such as fetching balls ■ Regular grooming – this is important, especially for dogs with long fur, but try to make it fun as this is a positive way to bond ■ Recognise any changes in behaviour as this may indicate a health problem – for example, loss of appetite or ear discomfort, and

take to the vet as a precaution Cats ■ Close all windows and doors when you bring your kitten home and block all nooks and crannies - kittens are inquisitive and get themselves into tight spots and can escape ■ Provide a litter tray and show the cat where it is – once the habit of using the litter tray has been developed, they will seek it out even

when they have access to the rest of the house ■ Introduce your cat to an existing dog or cat needs to be done very carefully to ensure they have the best chance of becoming good friends – make sure the cat has a quick route to its ‘safe area’ in the house and prevent the dog from chasing ■ Consider neutering – neutering male cats reduces their urge to roam and fight, and

spaying females avoids unwanted pregnancies Rabbits ■ Rabbits are social and shouldn’t be kept alone, they are happiest in the company of their own species, with the best combination being a neutered male and a neutered female ■ Rabbits need to be fed the correct diet otherwise they could develop overgrown teeth, which are painful and will involve a trip to the

vet – this should contain a constant supply of hay or grass, but not freshly cut grass as this is toxic to rabbits ■ They should be checked twice a day, and provided with fresh water ■ Rabbits can live indoors or outdoors, but extra care must be taken if they are kept indoors to protect cabling and remove house plants as they may be poisonous.

RRP £15.99 OFFER PRICE £12.50 Almost all of us have happy memories of excursions and holidays spent beside the sea. For many, these will have included the Yorkshire coast which runs unbroken for more than one hundred miles between the two great rivers, the Tees and the Humber. Within those boundaries are the popular seaside resorts of Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington as well as numerous smaller and quieter but equally well-loved destinations. How did the love affair with the area start and how did it develop? Over the years, all the ingredients for the perfect holiday are there - the spas, the sea and sun bathing, board and lodgings, entertainment and just as importantly, the journeys there and back. “Beside the Seaside” takes a detailed but entertaining look back at the history of these resorts over the last four hundred years and asks, “what does the future hold?” Packed with information, this book is fully illustrated with photographs, old and new, together with paintings and etchings. Coupled with the thoughts and memories of tourists and travellers from the 17th century through to the present time, it gives a fascinating insight into how our ancestors would have spent their time at the coast. Evocative and intriguing, absorbing and surprising, John Heywood’s book will appeal both to those familiar with the area and to others who just enjoy being “Beside the Seaside”.

This entitles the bearer to receive Beside the Seaside at the discounted price of £12.50 in the Barnsley Chronicle Bookshop only.

WAB HISTORY takes a look through the archives at WAB news from years gone by. This week, we’re off to April 2012 Here’s what hit the headlines... Thursday April 5 ITS Donate Toys To Children’s Ward A BARNSLEY company has donated scores of toys and games to the children’s ward at Barnsley Hospital and a mums and tots group at Dodworth. The administration and finance team at Independent Training Services did a one month charity challenge for the ‘New Toys for the Girls and Boys’ project to collect toys, books, jigsaws and other play equipment. The donations were handed over to the Mums and Tots group in Dodworth and the children’s ward last week.

Wednesday 25 April Charges Added To Spend A Penny In Bus Station CHARGES will be added for any passenger that wants to spend a penny in the transport interchange. From May 2 South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) will be introducing coin operated turnstiles at the toilets which will cost 20p to enter. David Young, SYPTE director of customer experience, said: “It’s with reluctance we are introducing the charge, but, given pressures on funding, we feel we can’t maintain a high standard of service without charging to use the toilets. “We introduced turnstiles at Rotherham Interchange last year. These have operated with few complaints from customers.” The turnstiles will accept 5p,

10p, 20p, 50p and £1 coins but no change will be given. SYPTE say it is to cover the ongoing cleaning and maintenance of the facilities and prevent vandalism, graffiti and damage. Thursday April 26 Barnsley Girl Chops Locks For Charity A NINE-YEAR-OLD Barnsley girl has cut off ten inches of her hair to raise money for charity. Grace Orr has raised almost £700 for the sponsored event and has donated her shorn locks to the Little Princess Trust where it will be used to make wigs for young children who had cancer. The cash will be going to the Neurology Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, where Grace’s dad was treated after breaking his neck last year.

Wages need to increase... FULL-TIME workers in Barnsley need a wage increase of at least 26% per year in order to buy a house. According to a report, those earning any less than £30,702 a year are now priced out of buying the average home in the area. Tony Stacey, Chief Executive of South Yorkshire Housing Association, said: “For far too many local people, affordable housing is simply out of reach. ”

Despite regional house prices being lower than the national average, local salaries have failed to keep up with house prices, meaning the average home in Barnsley is now over five and a half times the average yearly income. Tony said: “We should expect more from both national and local politicians to find solutions that work for all sections of society.” Windows & Doors in 25 Colours

weeding is always best, making sure to remove the pesky unwanted plants right down to their roots. Getting stuck in and digging them out is the only way to make certain it is gone completely. The two weeds to look out for in particular are woodrush and celandine. Celandine is one of the first weeds to appear in the season. It appears as a low growing plant with waxy, spade-like leaves which can make chemicals a difficult solution. Instead, aim to dig its small tubers out. Woodrush can attempt to blend in with your reg-

ular grass due to its appearance – it can look just like a coarse section of your lawn. It particularly favours wet conditions, meaning April showers can speed its growth. There is an easy solution though: like with most weeds, digging in with a spade should help solve the problem. The same favourable weather conditions which encourage your weeds to grow can also spur on your other flowers too. That’s great news for those of us who are waiting to cover a wall with a climbing rose. But it also means you have to pay extra

attention to them too. Eager to gain a foothold, you need to make sure you tie them correctly and train them into place otherwise they will head in any direction they choose. If you are lucky enough to have a pond in your garden space, and thus some water lilies, they need extra care too. They are another plant which is keen to grow and spread, but if you don’t make sure to carefully divide them – separating their underwater tuber-like rhizomes – the overcrowding can be detrimental to their health. You can be proactive in your cold defences and plant fruit in a sheltered position, such as a south-facing wall, already. But if you need a solution outside of uprooting whole elements, fleece and crop covers can be a solution. For strawberries, a double-layer of fleece should be used. And for fruit which is grown on walls or fences, a triple layer should be put in place.

For the best in composite doors, windows and patios - visit our showroom Challenge time: Dave Gollick and Scott Phillips. TWO men are preparing to hike the Peak District to raise money for the Heads Together Barnsley charity. Scott Phillips and Dave Gollick will look to complete the Yorkshire three peaks challenge on Saturday July 14, in memory of Jack and Paul Sykes, who tragically lost

their lives in a house fire in Penistone. The boys’ mother, Claire, set up Heads together Barnsley in their memory and the charity supports families facing trauma and families who have a loved one with a life-limiting illness. The pair plan to sleep over in

Pen-y-ghent the night before and begin the challenge in the morning, completing 24 miles (38.6km) and 1585m (5200ft) of ascent. To donate and support the challenge, visit owdfunding/scott-dave-threepeaks

New system to deal with response times THE Yorkshire Ambulance Service has launched a campaign to highlight ways in which the NHS Trust respond to 999 calls. The Right Response First Time will categorise calls and under a new system, where call handlers in the 999 Emergency Operations Centres ask additional questions that can very quickly identify those patients who will be the highest priority – this allows an ambulance to be dispatched without delay. Stephen Segasby, Deputy Director of Operations for

Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “We are focused on providing high quality treatment for our patients wherever they may be; this could be over the phone or in person. “When a patient is seriously ill or in a life-threatening condition they will be taken to the nearest emergency department or trauma unit. “But for patients with less urgent needs, the focus is shifting away from acute hospitals.” In 2017, only 67 per cent of patients who called 999 required hospital admission.

Cannabis seized THE Royston Neighbourhood Policing team seized around £15,000 worth of cannabis plants in Grimethorpe. A warrant was executed at an address on Brierley Road on April 5. Approximately £15,000 worth of cannabis plants were recovered from outbuildings at the property.

Calls will now be categorised into four categories and, depending on how urgent the medical issue is, an ambulance will arrive within seven minutes for category one; 18 minutes for category two; up to 120 minutes for category three and 180 minutes for category four. Stephen Segasby said: “Our Emergency Medical Dispatchers who receive the 999 calls have been given more time to come to the right conclusion about what is the most appropriate response for the patient.”

Gay teen rom-com shows real heart... LOVE, SIMON (12A) Directed by: Greg Berlanti Starring: Nick Robinson, Katherine Langford, Jennifer Garner IN MOST respects Love, Simon is your perfectly average teen rom-com. It is filled with stylish teens; witty banter between friends on the football field; jokes about high school cliches and cliques, and encounters with teachers who are either awkward or insanely cool, and never anywhere in between. But just like its main character, Love, Simon has a secret which makes it remarkable: the love story at its centre is a gay one. Simon, played by Nick Robinson, has more stress than the average high schooler. Not only does he have to tackle managing friends and home work, he has to

manage keeping the secret of his sexual orientation too. A post on the shared school Tumblr blog lets Simon connect anonymously, through alternate names, with another boy at school who is going through similar turmoil. But after his secret is potentially spilled, he must do everything he can to keep his life, and his relationship with the mysterious Blue, on track. Love, Simon is daring in its banality. Where most LGBT movies either belong to the arthouse or the niche, director Greg Berlanti’s movie – adapted from the acclaimed YA novel by Becky Albertalli – is perfect for its audience. Better still, this is a world they will recognise. Diversity is the modern reality and this movie shows that perfectly. And for teens from

those represented minorities? This is game changing. Many, for the first time, will be able to recognise themselves on screen. Simon, played likeably by Nick Robinson, isn’t perfect. He doesn’t always say the right thing or make the right decisions. It makes him an honest character in a dishonest situation. But in his relationships with his friends, such as 13 Reasons Why alum Katherine Langford, show plenty of good spirit. And his relationships with his family, particularly his mother (Jennifer Garner), show heart. A standout moment between Simon and her is a genuine tearjerker. Moments verge on saccharine: the climax of the film would be sickly sweet if it didn’t serve the loveable characters so well. The humour, too, does-

Get your new ZOE fully upgraded RENAULT is making it easier than ever for drivers to upgrade from a combustionengined vehicle to the all-electric ZOE with the availability of a host of attractive offers on the enhanced 2018 model.

Now featuring the R110 motor which is 16hp more powerful than the powerplant on the previous version yet still maintains the same real world range of 186 miles the MY18 ZOE is available to order now, with first deliveries expected in late summer. The latest ZOE is available through a selection of three-year 4.9 per cent APR PCP Selections offers. Alternatively, customers can opt to finance their new ZOE via zero per cent HP five-year deals. The limitedtime offers, which are available until July 2, encompass the entire Renault ZOE line-up. These offers are available for both of the ZOE’s purchase options either with a battery hire scheme where the Z.E 40 battery is leased each month or via outright purchase.

Underlining the affordability of the ZOE, the Dynamique Nav version can be enjoyed for £199 per month (excluding battery lease) via the 4.9 per cent APR PCP Selections offer following an initial deposit of £3,499. As an outright purchase and via the same PCP package, the iDynamique Nav costs £269 per month with a customer deposit of £4,999 (including battery). For those that want a more luxurious all-electric driving experience, the ZOE Signature Nav can be owned through the three-year 4.9 per cent PCP Selections offer for £239 per month (excluding battery lease) with a deposit of £3,799. For outright purchase, the iSignature Nav costs £309 per month after a customer deposit of £4,999 (including battery). In addition, Renault is continuing to offer retail customers who purchase a ZOE, a free 7kW wall box charger fully-installed at their home to ensure the best possible electric experience.

Ford Ka remains popular THE 2016 Ford Ka (petrol manual) was on average the fastest selling used car in February, taking an average of just 17 days to leave forecourts, data from Auto Trader has revealed. While a nippy hatchback may have topped the national top 10 list last month, as the UK shivered in wintry weather conditions, second, third and fourth place were taken by hardy SUVs. Both the 2015 Audi Q5 (diesel automatic) and the 2015 Vauxhall Antara (diesel manual) took an average of 19 days to sell in February, while the 2011 Audi Q5 (diesel manual) took a respectable 20. Defying the trends in the new car market, February was another solid month for used diesels, making up seven of the national top 10. A diesel also took the top spot in three of the 13 regions and countries tracked: North West (2016 Hyundai Tucson diesel manual 19 days), Wales (2017 Nissan Qashqai diesel manual 24 days) and Northern Ireland (2017 VW Golf diesel manual 37 days). Hatchbacks were outnumbered nation-

ally, but at a regional/country level, they were the clear winners, recording the fastest turn of sale in all but one region. In fact, so popular was the hatchback in the West Midlands, the South West, Yorkshire and Northern Ireland last month, no other body type made it onto their respective top 10s. Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Auto Trader retailer and consumer products director, said: “The year ahead holds some exciting opportunities for retailers, and finance will play an increasingly important role in driving growth, particularly within the used car market. As we can see from our data, the most popular second-hand cars are three to four years old. “Because of finance, these younger, more desirable, but more expensive cars are becoming more accessible to consumers who increasingly view cost as a monthly payment, not as a total price. “Making finance easier to understand, and easier to navigate, will really help retailers stand out in today’s competitive market.”
