Blow those 2015 cobwebs away ... THE Swing Commanders will help blow away some of the Christmas cobwebs later this month as they come to the Lamproom Theatre. Playing music from the 1930s all the way up to the 1950s, the band have headlined some of the UK’s top vintage and country music festivals. Every member of the band can play at least one instrument, with some playing up to three — but the band is best known for bringing an infectious energy to their performances. The Swing Commanders come to the Lamproom on January 17. Box office 200075.

Learn to slam dunk for free

ON THE BALL: The Barnsley Leaders practising during one of their sessions.

BUDDING young basketballers have the chance to learn how to dunk for free with a Barnsley club. The Barnsley Leaders, who meet at Netherwood ALC in Wombwell, are offering free taster sessions next month for boys and girls who want to take their basketball skills further in the new year. The club is run by coach Bert Beaumont, who was nominated for a BBC Sports Personality of the Year award last year in the national Unsung Hero category. Bert said: “Barnsley Leaders basketball club hold weekly coaching sessions for boys and

girls from primary school years three to six and and secondary school year seven, at Netherwood ALC on Fridays from 4.30 to 6.15pm. Doors are open from 4.10pm for new players to register. “The beginners’ session are under the supervision of coach Jonathan Wainwright who has coached in the EBL and has also spent time coaching in the USA. Jonathan is assisted by Chris Wainwright who represented England at under 18s level and top point scoring forward for Darfield men’s basketball team Jez Lonsdale. “Any new boys or girls who

attend on January 15, 22, or 29 will be able to have it as a taster session free of charge. Big or small, there’s a place for you all at basketball. Players should wear sportstype clothes and bring dry indoor trainers or pumps to change into and a cold drink. “The Leaders’ club is the only junior basketball club in the area and it runs an under 16s team in the EBL, as well as rookie, under 11 and under 13 teams in local competitions.” The sessions are open to anyone from across Barnsley and the surrounding areas.

LOOKING TO FUTURE: Police and crime commissioner Dr Alan Billings.

Commissioner’s new year message POLICE Commissioner Dr Alan Billings has thanked Barnsley MP Dan Jarvis and Barnsley FC for their support in the campaign to ban legal highs. Thanking them Dr Billings said: “Too many young people are affecting their present and future health by using them.” In his new year message Dr Billings says: “I have used the past year to visit a great number of groups. It has been good to meet so many people and learn so much about what you all do.” Looking to the future the commissioner says the government’s funding announcement for next year did not produce the draconian cuts that everyone expected and feared, though savings will still have to be made year on year. He says this gives the authority a little more room to protect neighbourhood policing and work out what the shape of the force should be in the light of changes to the type of crime it is experiencing — fewer burglaries and car thefts; more sexual, serious and cyber crimes — and the increase in demand for police services — especially with vulnerable people. One of the three priorities for the future

police service in the commissioner’s police and crime plan is ‘protecting vulnerable people’. Dr Billings says: “We are becoming more determined as a society to deal with forms of domestic abuse. Not just those who physically attack their partners but those who use psychological and emotional pressure. The police will have to get better at being sensitive to instances of abuse and smarter at capturing evidence so that swift and firm action can be taken. “In addition, as we all live longer and become prone to the diseases of ageing — such as dementia — the police will find themselves more and more having to help where people go missing or get lost and forgetful. “Doing this work sensitively requires skills of empathy and understanding. “New Year is a time when large numbers of people go out to enjoy themselves. “Sadly, history suggests that this year as in past years, a few occasions of celebration will end with a tragedy. “Even small amounts of alcohol impair judgements at the wheel and slow reaction times. So in wishing you a Happy New Year I also wish you a safe one.”

Flashback to Royal visit in 1975 Interchange put town on map A royal visit to Barnsley 40 years ago was close to being bog standard. Work began on the £24m Barnsley Interchange a decade ago. Comparisons with the magnificent Eurostar terminal at London St Pancras were over the top. Ian Thompson reports. CEREMONIES to mark the start of any big building tend to consist of hype, hope and a hole in the ground. Barnsley Interchange needed neither hype nor hope. Any replacement for the cramped, dank dump that was the old bus station was badly needed. The interchange-to-be attracted the sort of words beloved by architects and transport consultants. You know, hub, gateway, those sort of words. Council leader Coun Steve Houghton spoke in plainer language. “We have some pretty exciting and sometimes controversial schemes to put Barnsley on the map and this is what the interchange project is doing. “Without good transport connections, the town is not going to develop as we want it to.” The interchange had a lot going for it. It was dubbed ‘Gordon’s Meccano set’ after Gordon Fawcett, project manager, who worked for main contractor Laing O’Rourke. The roof was plastic which sheltered passengers from the rotten rain and sweltering sun. The Meccano-like steel skeleton of the building was made by Wombwell-based Billington Structures. Only 30 per cent of the steelwork — anything painted white — could be seen. A team from Royston-based Wisconco put it up. The timber beams were produced on the largest lathe in England. The ambitious plans for a new Barnsley seemed to attract a certain kind of overexcited hyperbole. An advertorial gushed: “The innovative design of this striking gateway can be compared to that of the new Eurostar hub at St Pancras.” The trouble with any big building project is that after the sod-cutting, there is sod all left to say. Until people start using the building.

Ian Thompson reports. PREPARATIONS for the royal visit in 1975 were lavish. But it was only attention to detail which stopped the visit being embarrassing for the hosts. The first problem arose when the royal party decided to travel to South Yorkshire by train. There was no fleet of Daimlers suitable for the occasion to ferry the visitors around. Heads were scratched and someone said he knew where some vehicles could be found. The VIPs’ cars were delivered to County Hall, the headquarters of South Yorkshire County Council, off Eldon Street, on the eve of the visit. County Council chief executive Tony Mallett inspected the vehicles. Gold lettering on the doors of the cars caught his eye. The words ‘Co-operative Funeral Service’ sparked alarm. Disaster was averted by a quick call to West Yorkshire County Council who lent its fleet of vehicles. On the day of the visit, County Council officials were on hand on each floor of

But at least the public got value for money. About 20,00 people packed the town centre on that sweltering day. Spectators were able to quench their thirst with a pale ale called ‘South Yorkshireman’. It was brewed to coincide with the visit and the opening of a pub of the same name on the corner of Midland Street and Kendray Street. Beer had to figure somewhere didn’t it? This was Barnsley after all.

County Hall just in case The Queen got out of the lift on the wrong floor or opened a door she shouldn’t have. The royal party had to walk from County Hall to the indoor market through the pokey reception. This raised a delicate issue. The County Hall reception was dominated by toilet doors. A tasteful screen was put in front of the offending doors to stop the regal gaze falling on them.

FINES for littering and dog fouling continue to increase, according to a council report. The number of fixed penalty fines issued for littering and dog fouling is rising despite original projections by the council that after a period of time numbers would begin to tail off as people changed their behaviours. A quarter two performance report by the council shows 1,393 environmental fixed penalty notices were issued between July and September and there were 128 environmental enforcement related prosecutions. It also states the the net cost to the council per environmental fine issued is £71.34. Information received by the council from Barnsley Interchange suggests it has seen an improvement as, historically, litter would have to be swept outside the main entrances up to 15 times a day and this has now reduced to twice daily.

Diane searches for her mystery helpers A HOYLAND woman who ended up trapped between two cars after a shopping bag disengaged her hand brake is appealing to a mystery good Samaritan who rushed to her help before paramedics arrived. Diane Mann, 49, of Beaumont Street, Hoyland Common, was putting shopping away in her car on Shaftesbury Drive on Monday evening when her shopping bag disengaged the hand brake. Tangled in her shopping bags, the car began to roll down the hill and dragged Diane roughly 30 yards before crashing into a parked car. Diane was left trapped between the two cars with skin ripped off her shin and a broken finger. Diane said: “To be honest the door saved me from being crushed. It all happened so fast, but everything seemed to be in slow motion. It could have been so much worse. “Clough Road is at the bottom of Shaftesbury Drive and that’s a busy street. If that car didn’t stop me I would have rolled straight into oncoming traffic.” Two onlookers rushed to Diane’s aid and kept her conscious and calm before the ambulance arrived. “Two people came to help me as soon as it happened. I couldn’t see the woman’s face clearly because I was face

She could tell I was going into shock so she knew what to do to keep me calm. Her boyfriend reversed the car to free me. I’d love to know who they are so I could thank them properly.” Diane spent four hours in Barnsley Hospital and is currently recovering at home. “My husband always used to tell me to make sure the car was parked in gear as a ‘belt and braces’ but when I first learned to drive I was told not to. If I’d have followed his advice perhaps this whole thing would have never happened.” Are you the mystery helper? Call the newsroom on 734206.

One of Barnsley’s greatest racing pigeons was at the pinnacle of his career 60 years ago. Ian Thompson explains why there was only one Old White Un.

Old White Un could hold his own HIS white plumage made him handsome in a racing pigeon sort of way. Old White Un won many miler races but it was the way he won them that made him talk of the taprooms and one of the greatest birds in Barnsley pigeon racing history. Old White Un’s style — and he oozed it — left spectators gasping. His brave, ground-hugging, daisy-cutting way of flying made him distinctive. His uncanny habit of putting in fast, exciting finishes won him many admirers. Old White Un was to miler racing what Cheltenham Gold Cup winning Desert Orchid was to steeplechasing. At a race at Dodworth, Arthur Donohoe, the breeder of Old White Un, bet that his bird could beat all-comers. No bird had won a miler race at Dodworth in under a minute. Another competitor set the pace with a time of one minute two seconds. When Old White Un was launched, no one gave him much of a chance of winning. Spectators held their breath as Old White Un flew low and fast for the the finish. There was incredulity as Old White

Un touched down in 58 seconds. It was one of his greatest victories. A bird belonging to Peter Short, now 74, raced against Old White Un in the late 1950s. Mr Short, of Aqueduct Street, Honeywell, said of the race: “We held our own but Old White Un was a really good bird. He could fly really fast. He won a large number of races through his fast finishes. Whoosh!” Old White Un’s greatest rivals were Mad Pab, a big, daft and temperamental bird, and Blue White Feather which beat Old White Un several times. Blue White Feather was abducted and never seen again. The birdnapping led Blue White Feather’s owner Bert Stretton to quit training racing pigeons. Old White Un vanished after his retirement from racing. It took two years for it to emerge what probably happened. Three white feathers and Old White Un’s identity ring were found by an allotment holder doing some digging. It is almost certain Old White Un was killed by a cat. A sad end for a Barnsley miler racing legend.

VISIT: President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Huddersfield South Fatihul Haq presents Berneslai Homes’ Caroline Jagger and the residents of Hudson Haven with a huge donation of fruit and chocolates. Picture: Wes Hobson. PD078343

Muslim group help spread seasonal joy A GROUP of Muslims from Huddersfield has been spreading the spirit of Christmas in Wombwell to try and change the perception of Islam. Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association’s Huddersfield South branch visited sheltered housing complex Hudson Haven, on Storey’s Gate, to deliver chocolates, fruit and speak to residents. The association was created in 1889 by Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad to ‘revive the true peaceful message of Islam’. President of the Huddersfield South branch, Fatihul-Haq, said the group’s visit formed part of the association’s efforts to live up to their motto of ‘love for all, hatred for none’. He said they had been recommended to go to Wombwell by a local family. He said: “It was a warm welcome down there, all the elderly people seemed very happy. “There is a lot of negativity and we want to alter misconceptions. One of the ways

we can do that is to foster community relationships. “Although we don’t celebrate Christmas, as Muslims we thought we should do something.” In addition to visiting the elderly, 200 volunteers from the association also went to Cumbria to help those affected by the recent floods. Sabahat Karim, regional missionary in charge, said the organisation has helped feed the homeless, participated in tree planting and blood drives as part of their humanitarian work. They have also made charitable donations. He said: “Last year we had an Islamic book stop, with literature in the town centre. “A lot of people had never seen books like it before and were quite interested. “In the New Year, we are planning a peace conference in town and will be inviting different faith leaders and members of the public to discuss different topics, with food afterwards.”

PURR-FECT ENDING: Ruth Zoldan and Indy.

PD078391

Homesick Indy is feline fine By Oliver Dyson INDY the cat almost had to spend Christmas home alone when he got locked inside a house under renovation on Christmas Eve. Four-year-old Indy, named after the daredevil fictional adventurer Indiana Jones, caused owner Ruth Zoldan to worry after he went exploring the renovation project on Victoria Crescent on December 23, and found himself trapped inside after the plumber locked up and went home for Christmas. Ruth, from neighbouring Lingard Court, began to worry after the usually punctual Indy failed to come

home that night – and used some detective skills to work out where he had ended up. “They have been renovating the house for a few months and I just saw the paw prints on the patio window. I shone a torch through and saw two green eyes light up,” Ruth said. “He is a big fat cat who likes food, so he doesn’t go far. I got through to the RSPCA but they have no power to get into people’s houses.” After a sleepless night without anyone returning to the house, Ruth took to the We Are Barnsley Facebook page to try to track down contact information for MAS and OS

Property Management Ltd, which manages the building. After the Chronicle managed to get in touch with the building’s owner Mohammad Sharif, he rushed out to his house to help reunite Ruth with Indy. Blueline taxi driver Mohammad helped Ruth search the house and just as it seemed he was nowhere to be found, Ruth moved a piece of furniture and uncovered Indy, hiding in a corner. Mohammad said: “I was disappointed when we couldn’t find him but when he turned up, I was very happy for Ruth that it all worked out well.”

Police investigate purse theft POLICE investigating the theft of an elderly woman’s purse have released this CCTV image of a man they want to trace. They believe he could help with enquiries after the 82-year-old woman’s purse was taken while she was shopping in Kendray Street in the town centre on

December 21 at about 12.25pm. The purse has since been recovered, but a quantity of cash has been taken from it. PC Phil Hays said: “While we appreciate that the image is not of the best quality, I would ask people who were in the area at the time to give some thought to the

clothing the man in the picture is wearing. “The man we would like to speak to is described as white, about 6ft and of a slim build. He was wearing a dark coloured jacket with the hood up and grey jogging trousers.” n Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555111.

A SUSPECTED conman has been arrested for allegedly swindling pensioners out of cash. Police arrested a 45-yearold man from Barnsley after reports of an elderly woman letting a man into her home. The man allegedly went the victim’s home on Charles Street, Eastmoor, Wakefield, on October 10 and asked her for a drink. After the woman let him into her property, he allegedly stole money from her. The man is also being questioned about similar offences in Leeds and Huddersfield. Police said the majority of victims were pensioners and a ‘substantial amount’ of cash had been stolen.

Katherine’s big lifestyle change has given her a whole new lease of life

NEW WOMAN: Katherine after joining Slimming World.

FEELING self conscious and uncomfortable with her weight, Katherine PeaksWoods joined Slimming World, and has since significantly reduced her chances of developing diabetes. She has also gone on to win the Miss Slinky competition. Katherine has always lived with the risk of diabetes due to her mum having diabetes, and having been overweight from an early age. After her dad was also diagnosed with diabetes, she knew something needed to change with her own lifestyle to try and prevent herself from becoming diabetic. Katherine said: “I had always known there was a high risk of being diagnosed with the condition, then when my dad was also diagnosed I knew I had to do something about it.” Her weight had crept up to a place where she was nervous and apprehensive about joining Slimming World, but when she attended her first meeting

She is now well on her way to her final personal target weight and feels like a different woman. “I love the support I get in the group each week from my consultant and the other members, everyone makes me feel welcome and it’s like having another family,” said Katherine. Originally Katherine only had to cater for herself, but found it easy to plan ahead without feeling the need to weigh and measure her food each day. “I eat until I’m full and can still eat some of the foods that I fancy because no foods are banned within the plan.” Some of Katherine’s favourite meals include lasagne, chicken kebabs and Slimming World chips and curries, which are all still allowed within the eating plan, and she uses these in conjunction with
