Bid to make breakthroughs in crime detection RESEARCHERS with world-class expertise in a diversity of fields – including forensic science, child sexual exploitation, ballistics, terrorism and cyber security – will now work more closely and productively together following the launch of a new institute at the University of Huddersfield. The goal is to make major breakthroughs in crime prevention and detection and develop innovative solutions to global security challenges. The new Secure Societies Institute (SSI), based in the university’s Buckley Innovation Centre, is headed by Professor Rachel Armitage, a criminologist who has published extensively in areas that include ‘designing out’ crime. She saw the need for a new research unit that could draw on the depths of knowledge to be found in all of the university’s seven academic schools. “Working across the schools makes the research so much better,” said Professor Armitage. She added that the SSI’s remit would be to conduct high-impact, multidisciplinary research addressing some of the grand challenges facing society. For example, experts in cyber-crime within the School of Computing and Engineering could collaborate with specialists in psychology and criminal investigation, leading to greater understanding of how individuals make sense of incomplete data; and criminology experts from the School of Human and Health Sciences would work with product design lecturers and students from the School of Art, Design and Architecture to come up with innovative solutions to the problems of

shoplifting and household burglary. The new institute has been established through financial awards totalling more than £370,000 from the university’s own research fund. Now it will draw up bids for research funding from major bodies, including the EU’s Horizon 2020 framework. The SSI is to be officially launched on March 17 at a special event at the university. High-profile guests and speakers will include Angela Gallop, who is chief executive of the firm Forensic Access; the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire Mark BurnsWilliamson; former West Yorkshire Chief Constable John Parkinson; plus Lord Carlile, one of Britain’s top legal experts, who will deliver the closing presentation. During the day of the launch there will also be a series of discussion panels covering topics such as terrorism, forensic science and slavery and exploitation, with university experts discussing their research in these topics. The SSI has appointed Dr Dagmar Heinrich as its research fellow. She has a background in forensic anthropology and crime science. Her PhD analysed the use of forensic evidence in homicide cases. She and Professor Armitage will be joined by a senior research fellow plus two PhD students, with a background in computer science, to aid research into cyber-crime. In addition, they will also be recruiting three PhD students to address the grand challenges that will be addressed at the launch of the institute.

of Britain’s countryside and towns.” The book features urban and rural locations, as well as exploring Yorkshire’s renowned national parks. Simon said he believes it offers a vibrant and incisive insight into the culture and heritage of the county. It also contains information on local transport and accommodation. Meadowhall puts on artisan market FOR connoisseurs of cooking and shoppers who have a real taste for quality cuisine, Meadowhall is to host its first artisan food and drink market this Easter. From March 24 to 26, the shopping centre will play host to some of the region’s top producers. With everything from chutneys to ciders, wagyu beef, smoked salmon and venison, to mouth-watering cakes and hand-made chocolate Easter eggs, the food-lovers’ festival will have something to tempt everybody’s taste-buds. And if the food alone wasn’t enough to tempt you, the event will also feature a pop up cookery theatre, hosting demonstrations on the hour, every hour, by talented local and regional chefs including

York’s Stephanie Moon. Working together with Yorkshire Food Finder, Meadowhall will be supporting an eclectic mix of independent food and drink producers, eager to tempt shoppers with their mouth-watering wares. Those that have signed up to be part of the Artisan Food and Drink Market so far include: Staal Smokehouse, Orchards of Husthwaite (ciders, craft beers and liqueurs), York Pie Company, Cossack Cuisine (renowned Russian delicacies), The Little Square Cake Company and Source Climate Change Coffee. The market itself will be on Park Lane, between House of Fraser and Debenhams.

BUDDING young designers in South Yorkshire have a unique opportunity to show off their creativity and talent, while helping tackle crucial road safety issues. With Department for Transport figures showing more than 43,000 trucks registered on Yorkshire’s roads in 2014, the Future Truck Design Awards are looking for creative ways to make those vehicles safer, cleaner and more efficient, while helping young people to understand the exciting career opportunities available in vehicle design. Junior Johnny Ives are being challenged to take the traditional truck and create a futuristic HGV that includes a host of functions designed to make it the perfect vehicle for town and city deliveries. The competition is open to anyone aged 14 or over in full-time education, and a variety of entry categories are available for schools, colleges and universities. Andy Salter, managing director of competition organiser Road Transport Media, says: “More than two thirds of all freight is transported via trucks, but in towns such as Barnsley, deliveries need to be made while surrounded by pedestrians, cyclists and smaller vehicles. “The Future Truck Design Awards are a chance for young people to come up with amazing new ideas to make trucks as safe as possible in their home towns – and maybe also design themselves a bright future as Britain’s leading designers.” Big prizes are on offer for successful winners, with the winning school set to reap a £1,000 windfall and the individual students, class or team picking up Amazon vouchers for the design that most catches the eye of the judging panel, consisting of experts from major vehicle

Alert to bank customers about ‘smishing’ attacks BANK customers need to be extra careful after a new wave of socalled ‘smishing’ attacks has seen data thieves drain thousands of pounds from current accounts. One customer lost more than £20,000 from his current account after fraudsters managed to ‘hijack’ a text message thread, claiming to be from Santander, and saying that there had been suspicious activity on his account. When the customer called the number he spoke to fraudsters who asked him for a ‘one-time password’ and wiped out £22,700 from his account. SMS phishing — or ‘smishing’ — scams are the latest weapon fraudsters are using to target bank details. It involves tricking users into downloading a virus so they can impersonate a bank in text messages, hijacking genuine threads to steal passwords and security details. Lisa Baergen, manager at NuData Security, said: “Smishing, a twist on the phishing scam, is an old scam that evolves each time new technology comes along. |When banks started offering telephone services, fraudsters would impersonate a bank and call customers with criminal intent.

‘Customer education can help reduce the number of times this scam is successful’ “As banks moved to providing online services and apps, fraudsters started emailing customer statements, fake websites popped up and phishing emails started to make the rounds. “These SMS smishing scams are taking advantage of the consumer’s push for more mobile-friendly and innovative ways to communicate and interact with their financial institutions. “With this specific wave of smishing attacks, hackers fool customers into downloading their malware by posing as a legitimate, unrelated app. “The malware then takes over a legitimate SMS communication between the customer and their bank to socially engineer the customer into giving away their information and access their account. “Fraudsters know it is generally easier to take over an account by phishing, spear phishing (targeting an individual) or smishing, than to

open a new account using real or stolen credentials, which is why account take-over is alarming and, as we’ve been saying, on the rise. “With the overabundance of stolen data, access to full identities are prevalent and cheap, meaning it cannot be relied on for authentication purposes. “Customer education can help reduce the number of times this scam is successful, but we shouldn’t rely only on placing that burden solely on customers and account holders. “If your bank can’t distinguish between legitimate users and fraudsters, even with valid credentials, it’s time to they move away from static data to protect accounts, and move to behavioural analytics for authentication. “Behaviour patterns reveal details that fraudsters can’t fake despite their best efforts.” NuData Security predicts fraudulent transactions by identifying good users from bad, based on their online behaviour. By analysing more than 38 billion behaviours annually, NuData harnesses the power of behavioural and biometric analysis to empower its clients to predict fraud and verify the user behind the device.

lives could be saved each week — the equivalent of approximately 5,000 every year. Organiser Jason Carlyon, resuscitation manager for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “Restart a Heart Day is becoming a well-established date on Yorkshire’s calendar as a time when thousands of youngsters learn how to save the life of a loved one or a stranger who is suffering a cardiac arrest. “Many people don’t realise that if someone suffers a cardiac arrest in front of a bystander, who immediately starts CPR before the arrival of the ambulance service, their chances of survival double. So we would appeal to as many secondary schools as possible to take part in Restart a Heart Day 2016 and enable our staff and volunteers to pass on their skills to pupils who will then have this valuable skill for life.” The event has been organised in conjunction with the Resuscitation Council (UK), the British Heart Foundation, which provides the equipment free of charge as part of its Nation of Lifesavers campaign, and St John Ambulance, to give thousands of schoolchildren the skills they need to help save a life. If your school would like to take part in the event, you can register at www.restartaheart.yas.nhs .uk. n The deadline for applications is April 29.

CANCER awareness is in the region to target bladder and kidney cancer. Be Clear on Cancer’s ‘Blood in Pee’ roadshow is touring the country and has visited the Hillsborough Shopping Exchange to raise awareness amongst residents of blood in pee as a key symptom for both bladder and kidney cancers. The roadshow encourages anyone who notices blood in their pee, even if it’s ‘just the once’, to visit their GP to get it checked out. Given that people may not spot blood in their pee unless they check, this year’s roadshow is also promoting a ‘look before you flush’ message, particularly to women, who may be less likely to do so. Early diagnosis of bladder and kidney cancer increases the chances of survival, so being aware of the symptoms is crucial. For those diagnosed at the earliest stage the likelihood of surviving five years or more can be as high as 84 per cent for kidney cancer and 77 per cent for bladder cancer. However, for those diagnosed at a late stage, survival is as low as ten per cent for kidney cancer and nine per cent for bladder cancer. Matt Day from Public Health England in Yorkshire and The Humber said: “Bladder and kidney cancers claim more than 750 lives each year across the region.” Ian Lavender, actor and star of Dad’s Army who is a bladder cancer survivor, said: “I’m supporting this year’s ’Blood in pee’ campaign as a survivor of bladder cancer. It’s a simple message ‘look before you flush’ and make sure you go and see your GP if you notice blood in your pee. Spread the word, someone you know might have this symptom and reminding them to get it checked could save their life — it saved mine.”

Scouts team up for Recycle Now campaign BEAVERS, cubs, scouts and explorer scouts across South Yorkshire are taking on a new, exciting environmental challenge — aimed at boosting the local recycling rate, as the Scout Association teams up with the national recycling campaign, Recycle Now. The Ready, Set, Recycle challenge which runs until end of May sees young people in scouting across England and Wales compete to recycle the most plastic, paper, card, metal and glass packaging items at home. The challenge is an opportunity for young people to make their mark with their recycling efforts. If

every scout recycled one more plastic milk bottle, it would save enough energy to power a primary school for one and a half months. Along with working together to do their part to improve the local recycling rate, the environment and lending a helping hand at home, scouts who recycle the most will be awarded an activity prize and goody bags. Beavers, cubs, scouts and explorer scouts will learn how simple recycling really is, its benefits and the positive difference their hard work will make. The challenge will also help young people learn the skills they need to achieve their environ-

mental conservation activity badge. Alice Harlock, recycling expert at Recycle Now, said: “We want local young people in scouting to really think about recycling habits within their homes and to see what else they can do to recycle more and help their local community. ‘Ready, Set, Recycle’ is a great opportunity for all troops and their leaders to fly the flag for recycling across South Yorkshire, so we encourage them to visit The Scout Association website and sign up.” ■ For more information on the ‘Ready, Set, Recycle’ challenge, visit

PEOPLE in our region are more likely to spend time thoroughly researching household handymen than cosmetic surgeons or healthcare professionals, a recent study has shown. A new survey reveals that more than 73 per cent of participants in Yorkshire quoted word of mouth as a source of information when seeking advice on health matters such as cosmetic surgery or dentistry rather than speaking with consultants directly (32 per cent) and reading specialist professional media (more than 10 per cent). More than 38 per cent of respondents stated they were most likely to scrutinise household handymen while more than 56 per cent said that they would carefully examine various holiday packages before booking. And 39 per cent of participants proclaimed they would make further enquiries about financial service offerings and 36 per cent would investigate legal services companies, whereas just over 29 per cent and four per cent would take the same amount of care to research a cosmetic surgeon and healthcare professional respectively. Dr Foued Hamza, cosmetic surgeon consulting at Queen Anne Street Medical Centre, off Harley Street in London, said: “Cosmetic surgery is a life changing procedure so it’s concerning that these results reveal that people aren’t taking

adequate measures to research their medical practitioner sufficiently and this could indicate that Brits are too trusting of something as important as our health. “It’s crucial that you always check a practitioner’s qualifications and read testimonials and reviews to find out about their reputation. Speak to previous patients to hear about their experience and even go and get a second opinion with another doctor to compare. “To avoid any potential confusion or misunderstanding about the health and medical status of a patient, it is imperative before any cosmetic procedure takes place that the patient must discuss his/her health with the surgeon and have an honest and truthful conversation about any medication they are taking, and the surgeon must discuss the procedure in full. This should be backed up in writing by the use of a consent form so no procedure relies on verbal communications. “The consent form is legal proof that the surgeon has discussed every aspect relating to potential risk before surgery takes place — invasive or non-invasive. Even if the form is completed in advance of the surgery day, the consultant must always go through the form on the day and check if anything has changed. This form is then kept on file for several years. “Without these measures in place, people could be left in the hands of unscrupulous practitioners.”

FILM fans in Barnsley have voted the music from the shower scene in Psycho the scariest sound in movie history. The two-day operation to transport Nobby from Munich Zoo, where he was born, to Doncaster has been six months in planning and the 1,000-mile trip went without a hitch. Keepers at Munich, who worked with Nobby and his twin Nella, were gradually introducing and acclimatising them to their separate travelling crates in preparation for the journey. Nella will take up residence with a female group in a Dutch zoo while Nobby is making a new home in Yorkshire. Darth Vader’s heavy breathing in Star Wars also claimed a place in the Top Ten, alongside Tubular Bells – better known as the theme tune from The Exorcist. The Top Ten Scariest Movie Sounds are: 1. Hannibal Lecter ‘slurping’ (Silence of the Lambs) 6. “Here’s Johnny” – Jack Nicholson’s breakdown (The Shining) 7. Darth Vader’s heavy breathing (Star Wars) 8. Annie breaks Paul’s legs (Misery) 9. The sound of the chainsaw (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) 10. Freddy Kruger’s laugh (A Nightmare on Elm Street)

Our standard terms and conditions of Advertising and Payment are set out below and are applicable to all advertising booked in any of the Company’s newspapers, other publications and internet sites or with regard to any other business transacted. General In these terms and conditions (i) the ‘Company’ means The Barnsley Chronicle Limited of 47 Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2AS; and (ii) the ‘Advertiser’ means any person or company placing with the Company an order for the publication of an advertisement in any of the Company’s newspapers, other publications or internet sites, or any person or company placing with the Company an order for the distribution or insertion of leaflets or other publications or materials with any of the Company’s newspapers or other publications. Acceptance of Conditions In placing an order for the publication of an advertisement, the Advertiser accepts these terms and conditions. No term or condition that conflicts with them is binding on the Company or the Advertiser unless it is in writing and signed by or on behalf of both parties by an authorised signatory. These terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. If any provision in these terms and conditions is held to be invalid or unenforceable in whole or in part the remainder of them shall continue to apply. The Company reserves the right at any time to change in whole or in part these terms and conditions. CONDITIONS OF ACCEPTANCE OF ADVERTISEMENTS 1 Advertiser’s Warranty and Indemnity (i) The Advertiser warrants: (a) that the advertisement is legal, decent, honest and truthful and that it complies with the British Codes of Advertising and Sales Promotion, with any relevant codes of practice and with all requirements of current legislation; (b) that nothing in the advertisement is defamatory or constitutes a malicious falsehood; (c) that the publication of the advertisement will not infringe copyright or any other rights vested in a third party; and (d) that the Advertiser has secured all necessary authorities and consents in respect of the use in the advertisement of any pictorial representations or other representations of (or purporting to be of) living persons and of references to any words attributed to living persons. (ii) The Advertiser will indemnify the Company in respect of all costs, damages or other charges arising as a result of the publication of their advertisement or incurred in connection with any actions or claims brought against the Company arising from a breach by the Advertiser of the warranties in this paragraph 1 or otherwise from the publication of the advertisement. 2 Refusing or Amending Advertisements (i) The Company reserves the right to refuse to publish any advertisement whether or not the advertisement has been accepted or previously published. (ii) The Company may require any alteration it considers necessary or desirable in an advertisement as a prior condition of its publication, whether or not such advertisement has been accepted or previously published. (iii) The Company will permit only standard abbreviations and no hyperlinks or metatags may be included in any advertisements save with the prior consent of the Company. 3 Placement of Adverts (i) Whilst the Company will endeavour to comply with reasonable requests from Advertisers, the Company does not guarantee the publication of any advertisement or its publication on any particular date or in any particular position. (ii) The Company has at its absolute discretion the right to decide the classification, if relevant, for any advertisement. 4 Cancellation (i) The Company may cancel the Advertiser’s order at any time and shall give notice of the cancellation before the next due date of publication of the advertisement if practicable. (ii) In no event can orders be cancelled once the Company has commenced to carry out the order in accordance with the first publication date requested by the Advertiser. In other cases notice of cancellation must be received by the Company prior to the relevant current deadline. (iii) All cancellations must be notified in writing by post or fax. E-mail notice of cancellation is not acceptable. 5 Copyright (i) Copyright of all artwork, copy or other material created, reworked or contributed to by the Company shall vest in the Company. (ii) The Advertiser authorises the Company to record, reproduce, publish, distribute and broadcast (or to permit the same) all advertisements (including but not limited to text, artwork and photographs) and to include and make them available in any information service, electronic or otherwise. 6 Advertiser’s Property All artwork, photographs, leaflets, film or other property delivered by the Advertiser to the Company is held by the Company at the Advertiser’s risk and the Advertiser should insure all such property against loss or damage from whatsoever cause. The Company reserves the right to destroy without notice all such material after the date of its last use in connection with the publication of an advertisement, unless the Advertiser has given written instructions to the contrary. 7 Box Numbers (i) The Company will endeavour to forward all replies to a box number, to the Advertiser, as soon as possible after receipt, but the Company accepts no liability in respect of any loss or damage alleged to have arisen through delay in forwarding or omitting to forward such replies, howsoever caused. Box addresses must not be used for sending goods or materials of any value. The Advertiser authorises the Company to examine material passing through boxes and hereby authorises the Company to return to its originator or destroy any communication, which, in the opinion of the Company, should not be delivered to the Advertiser. (ii) Advertisements from dealers are not accepted under a box number, nor may a box number be used for the distribution of trade canvassing material. 8 Disclosing Information (i) All advertisements must be accompanied by the Advertiser’s full name and address and the Company may require evidence of authenticity of any advertisement. All trade advertisements must contain a trading name. (ii) The Company reserves the right to refuse an advertisement containing only a mobile telephone number unless the Advertiser discloses to them a BT land line number (or similar). (iii) The Company reserves the right to disclose the name and address of Advertisers if required by law or any regulatory or government authority or to other third parties where the Company, in its sole discretion, deems it reasonable. 9 Limitation of Company’s Liability (i) The Advertiser shall check the advertisement and notify the Company immediately in writing of any errors. The Company assumes no responsibility and shall not be liable for the repetition of errors in a series of advertisements unless it has received reasonable

written notice from the Advertiser. (ii) In the event of any error, misprint or omission in the printing of an advertisement or part of an advertisement (however caused) the Company will either re-insert the advertisement or relevant part thereof, or make a reasonable refund or adjustment to the cost. No re-insertion, refund or adjustment will be made where the error, misprint or omission does not materially detract from the advertisement. (iii) In no circumstances shall the Company’s total liability (including consequential liability) in respect of any error, misprint or omission exceed either the amount of a full refund of any price paid to the Company for the advertisement in connection with which liability arose, or the cost of a further or corrective advertisement of a type and standard reasonably comparable to that in connection with which liability arose. (iv) Save as set out in this paragraph 9, the Company accepts no liability in respect of any loss or damage occasioned directly or indirectly as a result of the publication of any advertisement or any loss or damage occasioned directly or indirectly by any total or partial failure (however caused) of the publication of any advertisement in any of the Company’s newspapers, other publications or internet sites in which the advertisement is scheduled to appear. 10 Assignment (i) The Company shall be entitled to assign its contract with the Advertiser or any of its rights or benefits thereunder. (ii) The Advertiser may not assign, transfer, sub contract, charge or in any other way deal with any of its rights or obligations under this Agreement without the Company’s prior written consent. 11 Data Protection Act (i) The Company will hold information it obtains in its dealings with customers to administer the Advertiser’s account, for statistical purposes, for debt collection and for fraud and crime prevention. If the Advertiser does not wish its information to be used for marketing purposes, it should inform the Company in writing. (ii) Telephone calls to the Company may be monitored or recorded for staff training purposes. 12 Advertising Agencies (i) An advertising agency, whether recognised or not, submitting an advertisement shall conform to the conditions laid down by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising regarding observance of the provisions of the British Code of Advertising Practice and to the Standard Conditions for transactions of business between newspapers and advertising agencies as agreed between the Newspaper Society and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising. (ii) The terms of the Recognition Agreement between the Newspaper Society or between the Newspaper Society and the Newspaper Proprietors Association and recognised advertising agencies are deemed to be incorporated in these conditions of acceptance for the publication and transmission of all advertisements accepted from a recognised agency. Without prejudice to the foregoing, these conditions of acceptance specifically extend to any personal guarantee given by the directors of or any other person on behalf of a recognised agency in respect of any unsatisfied liabilities of the agency in the event of the agency’s liquidation or insolvency. Such guarantee is part of these conditions of acceptance. 13 Leaflets For the purpose of these terms and conditions, any leaflet or other publication or material distributed with any of the Company’s newspapers or magazines is deemed to be an ‘advertisement’, and references to the publication of such advertisements is deemed to be the distribution or insertion of such leaflet or other publication or material. PAYMENT TERMS FOR ADVERTISERS Orders for the insertion of advertisements are accepted subject to the following payment terms: 1 Rates (i) The Company reserves the right at any time to change the scale of advertising rates and to apply such rates to advertisements (series or otherwise) accepted and not wholly executed at the time of any such change. (ii) It is the responsibility of the Advertiser to bring to the Company’s attention at the time of booking any discount, allowance or exemption from Value Added Tax to which entitlement is claimed. (iii) All gross advertising rates (except classified lineage and semi display) are subject to the Advertising Standards Board of Finance levy from time to time (currently 0.1%) payable by the Advertiser to help finance the self-regulatory system. (iv) All rates and prices quoted by the Company are exclusive of Value Added Tax. 2 Advertising Agencies (i) Commission will only be granted to agencies formally recognised by the Newspaper Society or the Company at the time of placing the order. The rate of commission payable will be determined by the Company and may be carried or withdrawn at the Company’s discretion at any time, subject to giving the advertising agency seven days written notice thereof. (ii) All advertising agencies claiming commission must quote order numbers for every booking made. 3 Time of Payment (i) Unless credit terms have been agreed, pre-payment for any advertisement must be made in full no later than the relevant deadline. (ii) In the event that credit terms are approved, payment shall be made for each advertisement no later than thirty days from the date of the invoice for such advertisement. Should the Advertiser be in breach of these terms, or of any contract with the Company, then the full amount in respect of all advertising published and all other amounts accruing from the Advertiser shall become due and payable. (iii) The Company reserves the right to withdraw credit facilities from any Advertiser at the Company’s discretion. (iv) Payments by post must be by cheque or postal order made payable to the Company and crossed. All payments must be accompanied by the relevant invoice, statement or remittance advice issued by the Company. (v) Any query in respect of an invoice must be brought to the attention of the Company within seven days of its issue. The existence of a query on any individual item on an account shall not affect the due date of payment of any balance of such account. 4 Late Payments (i) The Company shall be entitled to charge interest on all sums due at a rate of 5% above the base rate for the time being of Barclays Bank plc until payment is received, after as well as before any judgment is obtained, together with compensation for late payment under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 and regulations made thereunder. (ii) The Company shall be entitled to add to any sums due any reasonable costs and expenses (including administrative costs) incurred by the Company in obtaining payment thereof on an indemnity basis. (iii) The Company shall be entitled to charge the Advertiser £15.00 in respect of any cheque tendered which is not met upon presentation (and to vary this charge at any time without notice).
