Brett Sherriff Rotary says THANK YOU following Queen’s Birthday book sale

Once again the Cromwell Bowling Club stadium in Alpha St became Book Sale Central over Queen’s Birthday weekend as a year’s worth of donated books and magazines were offered for sale in Cromwell Rotary club’s now famous booksale extravaganza. Project team leader Lindsay Wilkie was delighted with the success of the weekend and the number of locals and visitors alike who came in to browse and buy. There were some who returned several times convinced that there were still little gems to be found on subsequent visits. And there were others who returned books they’d bought, after they discovered they’d already read some items. Without exception they smiled as they offered them back for re-sale. Such is the goodwill surrounding the sale that patrons were only too happy to laugh at their own forgetfulness ! Although not all costs are in yet, early indications are that the proceeds of the sale will be close to the 2017 total of $15000. Proceeds will go to local and Lindsay Wilkie (one of the organisers of the Rotary book sale) community projects. The Cromwell Rotary club is very grateful to the amazing Cromwell community for their help with materials, tables, transport, and venue. And a special thank you to all who donated books or purchased books - or both. Look out for our next book sale in early January. Editorial and photo supplied Open Home Mike Elford 0274 342 220

Volunteering Central encourages people to get amongst it during National Volunteer Week National Volunteer Week takes place from 17-23rd June and is a time to celebrate the 1.2 million people who are volunteering their time and skills to our communities every year. The theme for 2018: Volunteers, The Heart of our Community – By many, the work will be completed, Mā tini, mā mano, ka rapa te whai, captures the essence of the volunteering spirit and the essential link between volunteers and the communities who benefit from their generosity. “We are so lucky to live in such diverse and vibrant communities with a huge range of roles for people to get involved with. There are countless volunteers with a vast array of skills that are out there sharing their time and energy each week with organisations and individuals that they are passionate about.” “Everyone has their part to play and no matter how small the role appears, volunteers are a key to keeping the heart of the community beating.” says Volunteering Central’s Lucy Shea. Volunteering Central promotes, supports and strengthens volunteering

which creates stronger more connected communities. They are running a National Volunteer Week campaign encouraging individuals and groups to get involved in their communities by volunteering. “We want to encourage all those people out there who have considered volunteering but never quite gotten round to it to do it! Whether it is hooking up with a local organisation, walking your neighbours dog or having an impromptu beach clean-up with your friends – we want people to get out there and get amongst it. Just do it – get a taste of volunteering and who knows what it may lead to!” says Lucy. Volunteering Central are thrilled to have the support of key leaders in the community and local businesses who are jumping on board and leading the campaign by volunteering their time and supporting local organisations that involve volunteers. Mayors Jim Boult and Tim Cadogan, Mayoress Karen Boult, Deputy Mayors Neil Gillespie and Calum MacLeod, More FM’s Rosie and Joel, Endurance Athlete and Coach Dougal Allan, Chef Annabel Langbein as well as

local businesses Versatile Homes and Building, Affleck O’Meara Accounting and Moreish Kitchen are all supporting Volunteering Central’s campaign. They will be spending time with Aspiring Enliven, Sustainable Queenstown’s Dishrupt, Cromwell Bike Park, Wakatipu Senior Citizens, Wanaka parkrun, Alexandra Scout Group, Cromwell Museum, Living Options, Wakatipu Youth Trust and Food for Love. “Our community’s leaders are showcasing the range of organisations out there for people to get involved in and we hope they will inspire people to pick up the phone or jump on line to find out what roles are waiting to be filled by volunteers! If people aren’t sure where to volunteer, Volunteering Central can help people find the role that will spark that passion for supporting their community.” says Lucy. Volunteers are the heart of our community. Join Volunteering Central this National Volunteer Week and keep the heart of your community beating. Want to get involved? Jump online

From the “War Correspondent”

First World War This column (contributed by the Cromwell RSA) will be published nearly every fortnight to report on what was happening in New Zealand and at war 100 years ago. The Cromwell RSA thanks the Cromwell Bulletin for publishing this column. Still relatively quiet on the Western Front; albeit the NZ Division was not on the front line. They were in reserve and would be so until early July 1918. That is not to say the British and French forces on the front lines were getting it easy; they were not. Major artillery exchanges took their toll as usual and the occasional front-line battle meant more deaths. So, more time on other matters. “Volunteers for Our Boys”. Some linger for a chat, Some call me “Mother” – think of that! And often at the magic word, My vision grows a little blurred The crowd in khaki disappears, I see them through a mist of years: I see them in a thousand prams – A thousand mothers’ little lambs Many New Zealand women who were not professional nurses paid their own fare to England during the war. Together with NZ women living with their families in Great Britain, they bought their

own uniforms, and worked unpaid as volunteers in the clubs, YMCA camp canteens and as Volunteer Aid Division nurses (VADs) in the NZ military hospitals and convalescent homes in England and France. None of these women ever qualified for medals because they were not officially in the military forces. As so often with “women’s work” it was essential, exhausting, but unpaid, and, apart from the thanks of the men themselves, unrecognised. “Bringing home the Girl of My Dreams” When the war did finally end, there were about 250 marriage applications each week from New Zealand men waiting to return to NZ. It is estimated that shipping for some 2,000 wives and families was required. For many young men wartime conditions and a brief eight days leave in Great Britain led to romance and marriage, and the frustration of waiting for a boat to take them back to NZ. Many of the men had been wounded and had no occupation or job to return to in NZ. Their wives and families faced a difficult future in a strange land very different from the one they knew. “Women’s World” Under the heading above, and under the sub-headings of “Social and Personal”

and “Women in Protest” was this article/ notice (word for word) in the Dominion newspaper (Wellington) of 7 June 1918: “A meeting of very great importance to women is to be held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall on Saturday afternoon at half-past two. Its purpose is to urge that the laws affecting women as enacted by the War Regulations be amended so that men and women alike shall stand on an even footing when coming before the courts for certain offences. Other matters such as the question of women Justices of the Peace, women police, women on juries in cases involving the interests of women and children, etc are also to be discussed. And, in view of recent events all women earning their own living, members of all women’s societies, church organisations, heads of girls’ schools and mothers of girls are earnestly urged to attend the meeting. Although NZ women have the vote, they are very far behind Great Britain and certain other European countries as regards the part they play in public affairs; notably those affecting women’s interests. The meeting is open to women only.” “We will remember them”

IBD and Iberogast. IBD stands for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. It is made up of two main conditions: Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. It is estimated that nearly 20,000 New Zealanders live with these conditions of inflamed sore and irritated intestines leading to pain and cramping. With no set pattern of symptoms, it can be hugely debilitating to suffer from flare-ups and complications. However, there is a new kid on the block (so-to-speak) for relief of symptoms. Iberogast oral liquid combines 9 medicinal plants to work together to relieve multiple digestive symptoms. You could say it harnesses the power of nature. Wow … imagine experiencing a life with fewer interruptions! Iberogast was developed in Germany in the 1960’s so it’s been around long enough to know it’s stuff. The funny thing about it’s mode of action is that it helps the tight gut muscles to relax – and helps the lazy gut muscles to get going. Hence relieving cramps and gut discomfort is a high priority, but so also is relieving the fullness and heaviness that you feel too. Finally, clinical research has shown that Iberogast lowers the sensitivity of “hyperactive” nerves to pain. Both brain and stomach nerves can become over-sensitive which intensifies your pain. Iberogast works on this. Herbs can be helpful in the right situations. When you talk to Pharmacy staff they have your best interests in mind and will refer you to the Pharmacist or to the Doctor if there are red flags. But as a general rule, herbs can be useful for longterm prevention of chronic conditions, in the right person, at the right time. So, try Iberogast if you get an upset tummy often, whether or not IBD is involved. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose!
