He made a comment at the Central Otago A & P Show, about how the “flowers were not very good this year”. The reply was “Well, Jimmy Dundass, if you think you can do better have a go.” So for the next 3 years he entered his floral art creations in the Home Industries Pavilion at the Omakau show grounds, only to miss out by one or two points. This year with 4 1st’ s, a 2nd, 3rd and a Highly Commended he succeeded in winning the “Mrs W A Stafford” Silver Tray. The Tray was presented to the Central Otago A & P association in 1969 and this is the first time a man has won it. The creation, titled “Flowers and Stones” also won the Outstanding Exhibit gold ribbon. Every year Jimmy has said “this will be my last attempt”, but it is not in his nature to give up. His philosophy in life is “Never Give Up.” And this last Saturday 11th February 2017 all his efforts paid off. Article and photo supplied Open Home

Cromwell Bulletin

From the “War Correspondent”

First World War This column (contributed by the Cromwell RSA) will be published nearly every fortnight to report on what was happening in New Zealand and at war 100 years ago. The Cromwell RSA thanks the Cromwell Bulletin for publishing this column. With it being relatively quiet where the NZ Division was located on the Western Front in mid-February 1917, it is a good time to talk about “the war in the air”. The First World War was the catalyst for many significant advances in science and technology. None was as important or dramatic as the rapid development of airpower as a decisive factor in warfare. In four years of war, aircraft evolved from unarmed fragile oddities of limited use into machines powerful and robust enough to attack ground troops and bomb cities - as well as destroy other aircraft in the air. In 1914 aircraft design and production was still largely a cottage industry. Nations like France, Russia, United Kingdom - and then Germany began to see that aircraft could be a great military value. The use of light aircraft for reconnaissance purposes behind enemy lines was already proving of value. How useful they could be in a “fighting role” was yet to be proven. Initially the Germans preferred the airship designed by Ferdinand von Zeppelin (the Zeppelin Balloon). The refinement of communications equipment allowed people on the ground

to speak to the aircraft pilot or spotter and this led to aircraft being used, very effectively, as “spotters” for artillery. Battlefield reconnaissance and artillery spotting missions made up the majority of individual flights (sorties) during the war. Nevertheless, combatant countries rapidly expanded their air services and invested heavily in research and development covering everything from basic aerodynamics to specialist flying gear. Rapid advances were made in aircraft design and mechanical reliability. By 1916 the general-purpose aircraft of 1914 had evolved into specialised fighter/bomber/reconnaissance machines. With both sides relying on aircraft to see behind enemy lines, stopping the other side from doing so became vital to the success of major ground operations. Attempts to shoot down enemy aircraft with rifles were not effective. The next logical step was to mount machine guns on the aircraft. The Germans were the first to succeed in synchronising the fire of machine guns mounted on the nose of an aircraft with the rotation of the propeller. Using the Fokker Eindecker (the “Fokker Scourge” as it became known - gave the Germans a brief period of air supremacy over the Western Front until the Allies produced their own fighters with synchronised guns. Air combat, particularly battles to establish air superiority over a sector of the front, was increasingly fought by large groups of aircraft – hence the

term “dogfight”. Aircraft were also used to drop bombs on enemy positions; this quickly developed from throwing crudely adapted hand grenades from the cockpit to purpose-built aerial bombs with tail fins to make targeting more reliable. By war’s end, both sides had long-range strategic bombers capable of dropping 1,599kg of bombs. Strategic bombing of western Germany and British cities, was rather crude and did not cause a great deal of physical damage [unlike the bombing in the Second World W]; however there was the psychological dimension. Of course this bombing led to the establishment of early warning systems and air defence networks. Greater success was achieved in ground attack missions. Front-line fighters were used to strafe enemy troop concentrations, supply columns and artillery positions with machine guns and small aerial bombs. These strafing missions were incredibly dangerous – not only for the pilots who had to fly very low into intense anti-aircraft fire, but also for those on the receiving end on the ground. Airpower had arrived and a brave, new, terrifying world had come into being. [This correspondent has often wondered how many innocent young pilots lost their lives through incorrect synchronisation of machine gun and propeller rotation!!]. “We will remember them”

Young gun takes out Competenz Central Otago Young Cellarhand of the Year competition It was a close race to the finish in the Competenz Central Otago Young Cellarhand of the Year competition held at VinPro winery last Friday with Simon Gourley from the Central Otago Wine Company and Abby Gallagher from Mt Difficulty Wines tied for first place going in to the final challenge. The “Cellar Challenge” proved to be the decider with Simon Gourley taking out the win from runner-up Abby Gallagher and 3rd place-getter Jade McCormick from Amisfield. Simon Gourley returned to Central Otago last year after heading to Australia to gain valuable work experience in the Coonawarra wine region. More familiar with viticulture having been a previous winner of the Bayer Central Otago Young Viticulturist Competition in 2013, Simon is relatively new to the winemaking side of things but has proved he is a great allrounder and has an excellent knowledge of both the vineyard and winery operations which he thinks gave him an edge in the competition. “One of the sections was on viticulture general knowledge and so it was an advantage having worked previously on vineyards. Having that understanding of what goes on in the vineyard certainly helps when making the final wine.

“Being involved in the competition was a great opportunity and I’m looking forward to seeing what else is in store”, said Mr Gourley. The contestants were required to complete 8 different sectors including forklift driving, assembling a pump, first aid, wine tasting, budgeting, fault finding, lab work and a quiz. Glenys Coughlan, General Manager for the Central Otago Winegrowers’ Association was thrilled with how the inaugural event went. “We wanted to create an Above: Winner Simon Gourley with Glenys Coughlan, opportunity for our Young Cellarhands Central Otago Winegrowers’ Association and Kirk to further develop and enhance their Spinks, Competenz skills and based on feedback from the contestants we feel that this event has certainly achieved that.” The competition was sponsored by Competenz a National training organisation that supports New Zealand’s engineering, manufacturing, forestry, printing, sign making, journalism, and transport industries. The Competenz Central Otago Young Cellarhand of the Year receives a $1000 cash prize and all contestants will receive their first year free when they sign up for either the Level 3 or 4 New Zealand Certificate in Above: Simon Gourley completing the pump assembly section at the Competenz Young Cellarhand of the Year Cellar Operations. Sports clubs urged to get nominations in for awards “It could be the local rugby team or netball team which has won its local competition.”

Bill Godsall

Nominations are now open for this year’s House of Travel Central Otago Sports Awards and sports clubs and organisations are being urged to get their nominations in for the 2016 sporting year. Awards co-ordinator Bill Godsall said while there were a lot of elite athletes in the region, it was important clubs and individuals got their nominations in, regardless of whether they thought the athlete was good enough. “Let the judges make that decision. It’s still a good opportunity to showcase your sport.” He particularly wanted to see more local sports clubs nominate their teams, as the teams’ category often struggled to get nominations.

The judging panel will go through all the nominations to choose the top five in each of the categories – senior sportsman and sportswoman, junior sportsman and woman, team and coach – which will then go forward to be judged in their respective category. The winner of each category will then vie for the supreme award. A services to sport award is chosen by the judges and will also be presented on the night. Mr Godsall said the awards were a great way of acknowledging the achievements of the region’s local sportspeople, coaches and administrators, as well as showcasing some of the minority sports which were often overshadowed by the bigger sports. Mr Godsall said he was constantly “blown away” by the calibre of the athletes in the region, representing a wide range of sports, and every year there seemed to be new and exciting athletes emerging. Mr Godsall said anyone could nominate a sportsperson, and he particularly urged family members of athletes to nominate

them. “Many athletes are too humble to nominate themselves, so it’s really important someone supports them by nominating them.” This year’s guest speaker is New Zealand Paralympian Holly Robinson, from Dunedin, who competed in javelin at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, where she was the team’s flag-bearer. The awards dinner will be held at the Rydges Lakeland Resort in Queenstown on April 28 and tickets are available by contacting Sport Central. Mr Godsall said anyone was welcome to attend the dinner, not just people connected to the finalists. “The awards are all about celebrating sport in Central Otago, so anyone who has an interest in sport is welcome to attend.” Nominations close on Friday, March 10 and nomination forms are available by contacting Bill Godsall on (03) 445 1142 or 021 442 626 or by emailing him at

Riki Chidley set to ignite Cromwell Junior Football Cromwell’s footballing fraternity are hailing the appointment of former Otago and NZ Development player Riki Chidley as its junior coaching co-ordinator, as a real gamechanger for the local sport. Junior football is very popular in the town with hundreds of Cromwell children, and their parents, being involved in the Central Otago junior competition. Cromwell competes with teams from Wanaka, Queenstown and Alexandra over six junior grades – under-6s, under-8s, under-10s, under-12s, under-14s and under-17 – on Sundays. With the growth in playing numbers, and the success of the Division 1 under-8s last season in winning the Central Otago title, there has come a call to improve the football skills of both coaches and junior players. That’s where the popular and talented Riki Chidley comes in. The former midfielder/

striker has coached junior rep teams in Dunedin and Balclutha, but moved to Cromwell two years ago with his wife and two children. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge,” says Riki. “I’ll be helping the coaches, as well as improving the players’ technical skills and game strategy. There’s some real talent here and Cromwell has the ambition to compete well at all the grade levels.” Skills training sessions will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays each week for 6-8 weeks starting in the middle of February. The cost will be $60 per player. If you are aged 10 – 14 years and aspire to attain the next level in your footballing career, please register your interest by emailing

Cromwell Memorial Hall I guess the long standing members of the Cromwell Community Board heaved a sigh of relief when a decision was finally reached, after far too many wasted years, to refurbish the building at a cost of $4,300 per square metre. No doubt the 800 signature petition also had an influence on the Chair’s decision to use his casting vote to ensure the refurbishment proposal was approved. I am fully in favour of having the best possible memorial to those who perished in the World Wars but unfortunately the Board members who voted in favour of the proposal have let their hearts rule their heads. I understand that the refurbishment cost is $4,300 per square metre . The continuing problem with refurbishing old buildings is that the unexpected cost will always happen. No doubt this is why the cost per square metre of the refurbishment appears to be so high. Unfortunately in, my experience, this cost will always be higher as the unforeseen will happen. I am also aware that a brand new building using the same plans could cost less. I am really concerned that at least $5.4million of ratepayer’s money is to be spent on refurbishing the Memorial Hall when we could have a brand new hall with all the latest bells and whistles for less than that figure – maybe a saving of at least $1 million. $3million of our ratepayer’s money has already been spent on so called “beautification” of the mall when Cromwell’s service infrastructure, particularly potable water and waste water is in urgent need of an upgrade. I repeat that I am totally in favour of having the best possible Memorial and I believe that a brand new building at a saving of at least $1million would be a far more fitting tribute to the fallen. Telecommunications Industry Warns Consumers of Scam Callers The New Zealand Telecommunications Forum (TCF) is warning consumers to beware of scam callers preying on the vulnerable and elderly, in the wake of a series of hoax calls pretending to be from New Zealand telecommunications providers. Police have had numerous reports of hoax calls over recent weeks; and over the weekend scammers claiming to work for telecommunications company Spark have successfully scammed elderly New Zealanders out of thousands of dollars. In the Tasman area alone, three elderly residents have been conned out of a total of $120,000. The scammers contact the victim, saying they need to speak to them about issues

with their telecommunications account or computer, and then ask for personal and banking information. An Auckland woman named Joan who has received several hoax calls from the scammers said they have rung her several times saying “this is Spark ringing about a problem with your computer.” They warned her internet and phone connections would be cut off by 5pm if she did not carry out what they asked her to do on her computer. A spokesperson from the TCF said “the industry has strong policies in place to protect consumer information. Consumers should beware of anyone who asks for bank account details, internet banking access information, credit card numbers or asks them to perform unusual actions on

their computer. This is not something any New Zealand telecommunications provider would do under any circumstances.” The TCF advises “if you receive a call from someone claiming to be your telecommunications provider, hang up immediately and then phone your provider directly on their published 0800 number to check on the status of your account. Under no circumstances provide access to your bank, personal or credit card information.” Anyone who believes they’ve been targeted by the scam should report it to the Consumer Protection Scamwatch website, at
