A MESSAGE FROM MR. CHRIS There is a day in every Director's vision that he wonders "can I really take this journey and tell the story?" I ponder this often and at times think "I just can’t fall short; I want these young people to have the journey that will last a lifetime in their minds and hearts." And now I've come to realize that it is the young people who take ME on the journey; one that enriches my life through the passion I see in them every day. This cast never ceases to amaze me and lifts me up each day, and when they are on stage they tell the story better than I had ever dreamed it! I look into their eyes and see the last 7 months unfold and the journey has come full circle ... and now, in this one perfect moment in time, you too will be able to share in the wonders of their passion.
CAROLINE STEINBERG (PRINCESS/SEAGULL) is a 5th grader at Garrison Mill. This is her 1st year as an OBD Kid and she is so thankful for the opportunity. Caroline has performed in Once on This Island Jr, Seussical Jr & Annie Jr. Caroline is thankful for the love and support of her family and friends, and her 2 dogs. She dedicates her performance to Shannon & Chris Mayer for encouraging her to do her best. Break a leg, everyone!
FUN FACTOIDS The Little Mermaid was written as a love letter by Hans Christian Andersen to Edvard Collin. Andersen, upon hearing of Collin’s engagement to a young woman, proclaimed his love to Edvard saying ”I long for you as though you were a beautiful Calabrian girl.” Andersen then wrote The Little Mermaid to symbolize his inability to have Collin ... just as a mermaid cannot be with a human. He sent it to Collin in 1836 and it goes down in history as one of the most profound love letters ever written. A statue of the Little Mermaid sits on a rock in the Copenhagen (Denmark) harbor in Langelinie. Commissioned in 1909, this small, unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and a major tourist attraction. Edward Eriksen created the statue using his wife, Eline, as the model. It was unveiled on August 13, 1913 and remained there until displayed at "Expo 2010" in Shanghai, China then returned to its Copenhagen seaside home in October 2010. In the Disney version of The Little Mermaid when Ariel is sitting on top of the rock looking longingly at Prince Eric, she is in exactly the same position that the statue is in. Ariel was quite deliberately made a redhead in order to distinguish her from Daryl Hannah's character in Splash. Ariel's body type and personality were based on actress Alyssa Milano. The effect of her hair underwater was based on footage of astronaut Sally Ride in weightless conditions. Ariel's "Part of Your World" set a precedent for subsequent Disney animated musicals where the protagonist would vocalize his/her desires early in the film, including: "One Jump Ahead" in Aladdin, "Belle" in Beauty and the Beast, and "Just Around the Riverbend" in Pocahontas. Originally, Sebastian was to have an English accent. It was lyricist/producer Howard Ashman who suggested he be Jamaican. This opened the door to calypso-style numbers like "Under the Sea", which won an Academy Award! English - The Little Mermaid Danish - Den Lille Havfrue Dutch - De kleine zeemeermin Spanish - La Sirenita Irish - An Mhaighdean Mhara Bheag
German - Die Kleine Meerjungfrau French - La Petite Sirène Japanese - Ningyo Hime Norwegian - Den lille havfrue Hebrew - Bat Hayam Haktana
