Swimming Swimming Gala

Year 8 Swimming Lessons

I am pleased to announce the results of the Inaugural Junior Boys Inter-House Swimming Gala. All boys who competed currently hold their House Record and the winners of each race currently hold the school record. The event saw some pupils who do not usually represent the school at any other sports and it was nice to see a great amount of talent from the pupils. We hope to make the event bigger and better next year and hope that the new School and House Records are hotly contested over years to come. I would like to thank all staff who helped to make the event a great success. 1st Chaucer - 39 Point 2nd Cobham - 32 Points rd 3 Sidney - 30 Points 4th Caxton - 19 Points The complete table of results can be seen on the school website but a special mention must go to the following winners: 50m Freestyle— Joe Jeffery 50m Backstroke— Callum Owen 50m Fly— Andrew Fastiggi 50m Breaststroke— Adam Osborne 100m Freestyle— Tom Horak 100m Backstroke— Ted Rackley 100m Breaststroke— Callum Owen IM— Ben Luxford Medley Relay— Andrew Fastiggi, Callum Owen, Ethan Kett and Sam Horak. All Year 8 pupils have now attended swimming lessons and those who were identified as requiring more lessons were given the opportunity to improve their skills in the summer term. All pupils are expected to swim 25m before they leave primary school and at Hurstmere we check that this is the case. There are some circumstances where boys are unable to complete the standard and so interventions are put in to place in Year 8. Those boys who are still not able to competently swim 25m after their block of lessons are asked to attend extra lessons in the summer term. Due to low numbers, the additional lessons are far more intensive and the improvements made by those pupils have been dramatic. We would like to congratulate all Year 8 pupils on their efforts and encourage them all to continue swimming on a regular basis.

Sports Relief Charity In March most of the boys and some staff paid £1 to run twice around the playing field to raise money for Sports Relief. Also, there was a cookie/cake sale with the takings being split 50/50 between Sports Relief and the Zambia fund. In total Hurstmere raised £614 for this worthy cause. Mr M Robinson – Head of PE

It was an early start with the coach departing school at 5.30am but that did not deter from the boys’ excitement for such a big occasion. The opposition were Stanley Park High School from Merseyside, the winners of last year’s under 12 competition. Upon arrival at the Madejski Stadium we were directed to the home changing room, much to the delight of the boys. Our new kit waited for us and, after some words of encouragement from Mr Stringer, the boys headed out onto the pitch. Naturally the boys were nervous and within 10 minutes we found ourselves 2 - 0 down having conceded two goals in very quick succession. That did not discourage the Hurstmere team and they battled on until half time, going in with no further score.

Meeting the opposition and officials before the game.

The second half began and Hurstmere conceded again to trail 3 - 0. On a huge pitch the boys continued to battle and they got their reward with a goal back through Timi Pandonu. The game finished 3 - 1 with Hurstmere working hard right up until the final whistle.

PE Kit— ‘Fit or Not Fit Bring Your Kit’ We are very proud of our high participation rates in PE and are keen that this trend continues. A key factor in this is our PE Department policy of “FIT OR NOT FIT BRING YOUR KIT”. This allows injured students to take an active part in the lesson as a coach, leader or official. It also prevents school clothing getting wet and dirty when outdoors.

A special mention must go to Euan Corbett-Smith and Tom Fernandes. Both boys volunteered and played a half each in goal in place of the absent Sam Reilly who fractured his elbow two weeks prior to the game. They did brilliantly playing in a position that is unfamiliar to them and making a number of good saves.

In exceptional circumstances when a student has a long term injury it may be agreed that he is not required to bring his PE kit to school and alternative provision will be made so that he can complete written theory work for PE.

Finally, well done on another great season; hopefully with hard work the success continues next year. Thanks to the families of the boys for your continued support; it was fantastic that so many of you made the journey to be at the game to support A Specialist Sports and Science Academy
