As an initial entry into the 3D printing world, we launched WikiHouse in 2011 — an open source construction set for 3D printed houses.
Our aim was to enable anyone to design, download, print and assemble a house with minimal formal skill.

As a proof of concept, we created a plugin for the popular SketchUp design tool that transforms a 3D model of a house into flat panels that are algorithmically laid out onto sheets.
These panels can then be automatically cut by CNC machines out of materials like structural plywood and assembled with ease — like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
