“ Using darker timbers in a large plank form is a great way of applying a traditional look with a contemporary twist. Mike Richardson, general manager, Kersaint Cobb

Hot stuff Stone or tile floors can be cold to walk on, not so nice, especially in winter, which is where underfloor heating comes in. Not all floors are suitable for this though, which you should bear in mind if it’s something you think you might decide to go for later. Of course the best time to install underfloor heating is when the floor is installed, and depending on what type you buy it can be fitted DIY or by a professional. According to Michiel Bester, technical manager of Speedheat UK, underfloor heating is becoming both more popular and easier to install. “Advances in electrical engineering have created a new generation of controllable, super efficient systems, which are less under the floor and more radiant surface heating, like an electric blanket nestling just under your chosen floor finish. Because these systems are laid on top of the sub floor and sealed with an ultra-thin layer of special screed, they are straightforward to install, doing away with the need to dig down and avoiding any noticeable increase in floor levels.”
