Material World The type of floor covering you opt for will be influenced by your way of life as much as the likely traffic. So if you’re a busy mum then porcelain tiles that are easy to clean may be your top priority, whereas for an elderly homeowner the comfort provided by carpets could be the deciding factor. Stone floors require maintenance – sealing as well as cleaning, and wooden floors also need a little tlc, such as conditioning oils or wax, but hard floors are easier to clean than carpets. Carpets can harbour dust mites and hold a greater amount of dirt, which can be problematic, especially for allergy sufferers. On the other hand, older properties can be draughty and carpets help prevent this, they also absorb noise.
