Use your modem lights to find connection problems A quick glance at the lights on your modem can help pinpoint the connection problem.

Light on your modem

What it means

Power

A steady light means your modem is on.

Receive, Cable, Downstream, Sync or Block Sync

A steady light means the modem is properly connected. It may flash when data is being transferred. IF THE LIGHT IS OFF, THERE IS NO CONNECTION.

PC, Online, Upstream, Ready or Link

A steady light means the modem is properly connected. IF THE LIGHT IS OFF, YOUR COMPUTER IS TURNED OFF OR NOT CONNECTED.

Activity, Send, USB, ENET or Data

This light shows that data is flowing through the modem.

Test or Error

This light is normally off. A STEADY LIGHT USUALLY MEANS FAILURE OF THE MODEM OR THE NETWORK.

If one or more of the modem lights reveals that you have no Internet connection, here are a few things you can do: Check your cable TV service – Turn on your TV and check for cable service. If there is a cable outage, neither your television nor Internet modem will work. Wait until your cable TV service is restored before you attempt any further cable modem troubleshooting. Check for loose cables or connections – If the connection on your network or coaxial cable becomes loose either at your modem, computer or cable outlet, secure the connection. Reset the modem – Sometimes an error can occur without the lights on the cable modem showing that error. Resetting the cable modem can cause that error condition to appear after the reset. Reboot your computer – Many computer problems can be resolved by shutting down and restarting your computer. If you’re still having problems, please contact Charter Customer Care.
