COUNTRY CLUB LIVING Inspired by the Italian villa-style of Sarasota’s famous Ringling Museum, our award-winning 44,000-square-foot clubhouse is nothing short of magnificent. Marble columns, graceful arches and elaborate finishes all harken back to the early 1920’s when elegance reigned supreme. Club life revolves around the informal and fine dining areas (casual or buttoned up, it’s your choice), as well as the meeting and card rooms where members and their friends regularly gather. For larger functions and special occasions, such as weddings, holidays and the occasional charity ball, there’s the grand ballroom or private wine room, the Wildwood Cellar, where members and guests can dine and dance the night away. The clubhouse is the social center of the country club lifestyle, where member service and attention to detail are unsurpassed. The Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club provides a perfect setting for wedding celebrations. The elegant 4,200-square-foot Grand Ballroom is designed with tasteful chandeliers, richly colored carpet and a balcony that overlooks the golf course, nature preserve, and fountain-filled lake. The luxurious bridal suite provides a place to relax before the reception, and a Romeo and Juliet balcony overlooking the grand lobby is an ideal location to photograph those memories that last a lifetime. The Country Club offers a variety of locations for your wedding ceremony and reception, accommodating up to 240 guests. After descending an elegant winding staircase, exchange vows on the lawn overlooking the golf course and nature preserve. The outside balcony just off the grand ballroom provides another beautiful setting. Make your celebration even more picturesque with the stunning clubhouse as a backdrop of luxury and elegance.

the stadium course The Championship Stadium Course design was inspired by the TPC Network’s Flagship, TPC Sawgrass, which allows for maximum gallery enjoyment from the many spectator mounds and hills dotted along the broad fairways creating a stadium style viewing. Designed by Florida’s own Ron Garl, with PGA TOUR player, Mike Souchack, as consultant, the par 72 Stadium Course rewards shot making more than length, and features undulating greens that rise and fall as players approach the signature 9th and 18th holes. Playing to 6,927 yards from the tips of the back tees, it’s just about as much golf course as any player can enjoy. With its generous landing areas surrounded by huge spectator vantage points, the Stadium Course is a Member and guest favorite.

Opening its gates in December 1987, Black Diamond Ranch was a breath of fresh air amidst the endless string of existing Florida gated communities. A private golf club community, Black Diamond offers generous homesites atop rolling countryside with wonderful views as far as the eye can see. Black Diamond is the best of both worlds – an escape, worlds apart from the urban jungles of America, but close enough to all the major attractions, entertainment and niceties of city life. Also, near-by Crystal River, Dunnellon and Brooksville have private airports. At Black Diamond, the golf, rather than the real estate, was given top priority in the planning of the community. Today Black Diamond is Florida’s #1 gated golf community. We invite you to explore this exquisite Florida Gated Community! Developed by visionary Stan Olsen, Black Diamond was immediately recognized for the quality of the Quarry Course. Committed to creating perfect golf first, and then melding the homesites into the landscape, Olsen created what many have called the finest golf community in Florida. A man of adventure, developer, Stan Olsen, was attracted to this relatively unknown region of Florida by the expansive sand hills, unspoiled coastline, big oaks, tropical vegetation, springfed rivers that flow into the near-by Gulf of Mexico and the sunny, temperate climate – great for year-round golf. After an extensive search, in 1984, Olsen purchased a large piece of property in the quaint town of Lecanto—named for its lovely song birds.

The stunning clubhouse at Black Diamond Ranch sits quietly looking over one of Florida’s top rates golf courses. Nestled among 100 year-old oak trees and towering pines, the newly redesigned clubhouse is the perfect respite after a round of golf with friends or a special dinner with loved ones.

In lieu of flowers or other tokens of sympathy, the family established the Taylor Emmons Scholarship Fund for the students at The Outof-Door Academy, Taylor’s High School. After receiving over $150,000 in donations the Emmons family knew they needed to continue to raise money for the scholarship fund and honor the Legacy of this exceptional young man. One of the ways to raise funds for this cause is an annual golf and poker tournament, two of Taylor’s favorite past times. This past January we held our second tournament. The golf tournament was expanded to two courses to accommodate all the golfers. We had numerous poker players playing in the Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament. The winner of our poker tournament took home the grand prize of $5,000 and the Champion Texas Hold ‘Em bracelet. Both events are extremely fun to attend, fun to play in and it’s a great cause.

Congratulations to the 2013 Texas Hold ‘Em Champion Bracelet and $5,000 Cash Winner: Jay Quick

Bobby Jones Golf Club is a 45-hole municipal facility named for the legendary Robert Tyre Jones, Jr., who personally dedicated the facility on Sunday, February 13, 1927. The original 18 holes were designed in 1926 by the famed course architect Donald Ross. Nine additional holes were constructed in 1952 and another nine were added in 1967. The John H. Gillespie Executive Course was completed in 1977. In 1930 Bobby Jones accomplished one of the most amazing feats in sports history, the Grand Slam of Golf. In honor of these championships the British Course front nine is named for his British Amateur victory at St. Andrews and the back nine for his British Open success at Hoylake. The American Course honors Jones’ championships in the U.S. Amateur at Merion and the U.S. Open at Interlachen. Jones is the only golfer to have won all of these major championships in the same year.

the cradle of golf A frequent question from folks visiting southwest Florida is “Why do so many locals call Sarasota the Cradle of Golf in the United States?” Read on to find the answer to the Cradle query. Several communities across the country have laid claim to being the first location to provide a golfing facility. The most popular of these claims comes from Yonkers, New York, where two gentlemen from Dunfermline, Scotland, Robert Lockhart and John Reid, constructed a three hole golfing ground in 1888. These men formed the Apple Tree Gang and are recognized by many golf historians as providing the first golfing ground in America.

Many Sarasotans disagree with the Yonkers claim and local historical records may support their position. In December 1885, John Hamilton Gillespie arrived in the southwest Florida fishing village of Sarasota to oversee the Florida Mortgage and Investment Company for his father, Sir John Gillespie. The younger Gillespie brought his hickory golf sticks with him from Scotland and by May 1886 he had constructed a two hole golfing ground between what is now Main Street and Ringling Boulevard. By 1888 the number of golf holes increased to four and a practice range was added to the mix. This course increased to 9 holes and a clubhouse by 1901 and by 1906 a full 18 hole course was in operation. There it is. Sarasota had a two hole golfing ground a full two years before the Apple Tree Gang had put a cup in the ground in Yonkers, New York. | 75

IMG Academy Golf Club The Best Kept Secret on Florida’s Gulf Coast

ome to the IMG Academy golf students, the natural beauty of IMG Academy Golf Club is both rivaled and complimented by a great golf experience. The Golf Club features an 18-hole championship

golf course, multiple practice areas, grille room and bar, as well as a fitness room that provides and array of fitness & cardio equipment. It is a true test for low handicap players, and also eminently playable for higher handicappers who consider it extremely fair, yet challenging. Opened in 1972 as a private country club, the original course was a 6,673yard, par 72 layout. Sarasota National Experience Troon Golf in Venice

ediscover Sarasota National Golf Club as WCI Communities has acquired this beautiful property and will add its wonderful touch to this up-and-coming community. WCI, one of Florida’s premier

homebuilders, has started the restoration process with new home sites, extensive course renovations, and exciting future amenity projects. The 2,200-acre development will look and feel completely different, but you will be treated with the same great Troon Golf service you’ve come to know. TROON VALUES YOUR TIME™ Troon has introduced a plan to ensure that every golfer at every Troon-managed facility has an enjoyable golf experience while playing in a reasonable amount of time. Pace-of-play continues to be one of the top complaints among golfers so Troon is addressing this issue by establishing the Troon Values Your Time program. And since no two courses are the same, the approach is flexible enough for Troonmanaged facilities to tailor their pace-of-play expectations, while maintaining consistency in the program with three essential elements. These main elements include:

Florida. Be a part of the future as WCI and Troon Golf combine to provide the best of both worlds in golf course development and service!

PACESETTER Times – Troon facilities are implementing PACESETTER Times, which are designated morning tee times reserved for players committed to playing quickly in at least 20 minutes under the facility’s TIME PAR. This creates options for those looking to play in less time and also creates a steady pace-of-play for tee times throughout the day. PACESETTER Tips – In line with efforts from both the USGA and the Golf Channel, Troon has identified similar tips and guidelines to help golfers manage their own pace of play. 1. Play your tees 2. Play Ready Golf (tee to green) 3. Be cart smart

“Played there as a group of eight. A wonderful course and quite challenging .Will definitely come back again during the summer. Everyone was so helpful and friendly, especially the gentleman that took care of our clubs when we left. Offered a number of restaurants to us for lunch and was very courteous.” ~

TIME PAR – Each Troon facility has calculated its own TIME PAR by evaluating the appropriate length of time a golfer should comfortably play and enjoy the course. Look for these established TIME PARS when booking a tee time; on tee time confirmation emails; logo displays in the golf shop, on staff uniforms, printed on scorecards and yardage books, and signage throughout the property. | 85

It is often said, “The happiest day of a boat owner’s life, is the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it.” WAVES Boat and Social Club is the club to join if you have ever had that thought before. WAVES is southwest Florida’s premier boating club, and is well-known for providing an affordable and hassle-free alternative to owning or renting a boat. If you choose WAVES as your boating alternative over traditional boat ownership you will discover an elite membership experience that will benefit you and your family for years to come. WAVES Boat and Social Club eliminates all the gritty details of owning your own boat. businesses, and always buying locally for the items that the business needs to stay afloat. WAVES caters to each of its members’ individual boating needs by offering a wide selection of boats to fit any boater’s lifestyle, such as, pontoons, center consoles, deck boats, bay boats, sail boats, single and dual console bow-riders, tri-toons, kayaks, and cuddy cabins. These boats are available at four different locations, two in Sarasota, one in Bradenton and one in Venice. Having multiple boat options is perfect for anyone who has owned a boat before and always wanted to try out a different style than the one they previously owned. WAVES has a variety of membership options available such as corporate, seasonal, weekday, single member and family programs, but WAVES focuses on its members individually, and they will work to find a membership program that suits the needs of each and every potential member.

The Sarasota region is receiving an upgrade to its shopping and retail environment in the near future. Benderson Development and Taubman have collaborated to create The Mall at University Town Center. This mall will contain roughly 115 stores and the majority of them aren’t available anywhere else in Sarasota. Benderson Development is a family run business built on personal passions and commitment to the community. The Mall at University Town Center is just another example of the wonderful additions that Benderson Development has added to the Sarasota Community.

There will be a 5k walking-running path around the lake, playgrounds and gardens. Also, the park acts as an extension of N. Mirasol FAFCO Solar was founded by George W. Egglefield in 1959, and was originally known as Southern Insulation Co. Southern Insulation Co. provided energy saving alternatives to Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties. In 1977 the company developed a Solar Water Heating division which became known as Mirasol. Scott Egglefield, son of George Egglefield, was one of the first individuals in the state of Florida to receive a Residential Solar Contractor license in 1980 and soon after received a State Certified Plumbing Contractor license which allowed Mirasol to install water heaters, gas heaters and swimming pool heat pumps.

the backside of the solar cells giving an unobstructed surface area to collect sunlight. This allows the solar panels to capture more sunlight and convert it into energy more efficiently than other panels on the market. Mirasol FAFCO Solar knows the importance that its customers place on having high quality products and Mirasol makes an effort to provide their customers with the highest quality at all times. Choose Mirasol FAFCO Solar for your solar powered whole house system and you will never be disappointed.

Pool Heating Mirasol FAFCO Solar also provides its customers with wonderful solar pool heating systems and products. Mirasol solar pool heating systems come with a written guaranty to ensure your pool water will be over 80 degrees Fahrenheit at least 10 months of the year, and during the coldest weeks of the year the solar heated pool should still be 1215 degrees warmer than the average unheated pool. These systems are designed to use the customer’s existing pump to operate so the increase in cost is less than $1 dollar per month. Mirasol’s solar pool heating systems are well worth the cost, and customers won’t have to worry about their panels flying away during a hurricane, because of this Mirasol FAFCO Solar’s products and installation procedures are designed and engineered to meet or exceed the Florida Building Code Specifications for wind load; and if you don’t want the solar panels on the roof of your home Mirasol also provides ground mounting which is especially useful if your home is in a shaded area. If you choose to add a solar pool heating system to your home Mirasol states that a typical residential system can be installed in 1 to 3 days!

FAFCO, the leading manufacture of Solar Pool Heating Panels approached Mirasol in 1987 and FAFCO became the exclusive distributor for Mirasol for a five county area. 19 years later, in 2006, Mirasol FAFCO Solar obtained a State Solar Contractor license which allowed them to install solar electric systems to homes in the area. Mirasol FAFCO Solar has helped service over 10,000 customers spanning three generations of the Egglefield family. Mirasol prides itself on the combined experience of its installation, service and sales departments their experience totals over 100 years in the solar industry. Golf is one of the most popular sports played in the United States with an estimated 20 million golfers hitting the links nationwide. Due to many various factors, golf can also be associated with some of the most nagging and potentially career ending injuries. Luckily, many injuries can be prevented when a proper swing is combined with adequate flexibility, stability, and balance.

Basics of the Golf Swing The proper golf swing is a wellcoordinated athletic motion that requires movement of the trunk with a combination of rotation, side bending, and flexion/extension of the spine and limbs. Due to this multiplanar coordinated motion, joints and soft tissues require flexibility and adequate control of motion through balance and muscle contraction. While most athletes are familiar with a concentric (positive) muscular contraction like the typical bicep curl, most athletic injuries occur during an eccentric (negative) muscle contraction. This type of contraction would be equivalent to lowering a weight during a bicep curl. Golf requires multiple eccentric muscle contractions during the swing, which, together with improper swing techniques, lead to many common causes of soft tissue injury.

Back Pain While studies have shown that back pain is the number one musculoskeletal injury experienced by amateur and professional golfers, the exact etiology of back pain is often unknown. Fortunately, most cases of back pain will improve within a few weeks with rest and gradual reintroduction of activities. More concerning, however, are symptoms that radiate into the legs. This condition is known as sciatica and one should seek medical consultation.

Preventing back pain can be crucial to the success of any golfer throughout their career. Research has shown that decrease motion of the lead hip and improper spine positioning are significant risk factors for back injury. Therefore, a proper training regimen as well as warm-up which involves hip range of motion as well as spine exercises which simulate the golf swing (using all three planes of motion) can prove crucial in preventing and treating low back injuries in golf.

Shoulder injuries Golfers impose a significant amount of stress through the shoulder complex during the golf swing. The shoulder complex is composed of several joints, which provide significant mobility but also require stability in order to function normally. The stability of the shoulder joint comes from the function of small muscles and tendons known as the rotator cuff, which work eccentrically and concentrically, together with muscles of the truck and shoulder blade. Together these coordinated muscular contractions provide adequate stability and strength required for the golf swing. During the backswing, the rotator cuff tendons of the lead shoulder, especially when there may be arthritic changes present in the shoulder joint, can get pinched at the top of the back swing creating debilitating shoulder pain known as impingement. While ice and a brief course of antiinflammatory medication can often help, improvement in shoulder blade mechanics, flexibility of the shoulder joint, and functional strengthening of the rotator cuff tendons often allows successful return to play. If significant weakness or persistent pain continues, concern exists for a tear in the rotator cuff, which may necessitate more invasive treatment.

Elbow pain “Golfer’s elbow” usually is described as pain coming from the soft tissue structures on the inside of the non-

get our patients

the game... leading elbow. The structures that reside here are origins of the tendons of the wrist which are responsible for eccentric contractions that help control wrist motion and grip at ball impact. Pain on the outer side of the elbow is ironically referred to as “tennis elbow” but occurs in the lead elbow as a result of excessive eccentric load from improper grip and downswing. While often mistakenly referred to as a tendonitis, chronic cases of these tendon injuries have been shown not to contain any of the typical inflammatory cells and are more often related to a degenerative process. If pain persists despite a trial of relative rest and bracing, appropriate strengthening exercises have been proven to be effective for this condition. Additionally alteration of grip and swing mechanics will prevent the condition from occurring. For more persistent symptoms, more invasive treatments have proven very successful. ■

Tips to Keep You on the Golf Course Be old-fashioned

We have all heard that a proper warmup can prevent injuries. Start with some simple stretches of the shoulder, back, and legs before you grab a club. Then head to the range to hit a small bucket of balls. Not only will this loosen you up for that day’s round, but will be beneficial to you in the long term.

Two Convenient Locations: Sarasota 2750 Bahia Vista Street, Suite 100 Sarasota, Florida 34239 Lakewood Ranch 6230 University Parkway, Suite 203 Lakewood Ranch, Florida 34240

Orthopedic Surgeon

Incorporate a proper warm up for your wrists and forearms to include stretching and slow golf swings on the practice range. This will reduce the amount of shock on your arms when hitting the golf ball. Wrist curls or squeezing a tennis ball for five minutes a day can develop the strength needed to play those tough lies. Also, pay attention to how and where the ball is sitting on the golf course. Hitting a ball off a hard surface such as a tree root can cause serious injury to your hands and wrist.

Renaissance™, Mazor Robotics’ guidance system helps surgeons perform safer and more accurate spine surgeries. For patients, this may mean better clinical outcomes with less pain and fewer complications, enabling a faster recovery and return to daily activities. State-of-the-Art Treatment for Spine Conditions Renaissance™ is used to treat patients suffering from debilitating back pain or limited range of motion caused by spinal deformities and degenerative conditions such as slipped vertebrae, scoliosis, and spinal nerve impingement (pinched nerves). To treat these conditions, surgeons use the Renaissance™ in procedures such as placing spinal implants in spinal fusion, injecting bone cement in vertebroplasties, and performing biopsies.

Renaissance™ Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Renaissance™ is transforming spine surgery by advancing surgical techniques from freehand methods to state-ofthe-art, minimally invasive guided procedures. Unlike open surgery, in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), surgeons make small incisions that may provide patients with several clinical benefits: less pain, fewer scars, fewer complications, and faster recovery. How It Works Surgical treatment of the spine requires planning and precision, and each patient’s anatomy has unique challenges. Surgery with Mazor Robotics’ Renaissance™ enables surgeons to plan ahead before entering the operating room. During surgery, it guides the surgeons according to the preoperative plan they created. Surgeons use Renaissance™’s advanced 3D planning software before surgery to create a unique surgical blueprint based on the anatomy and spinal condition of each patient. During surgery, the surgeon does the actual work; Renaissance™ guides the surgeon’s tools according to the surgical blueprint to place the implants safely, and with the highest level of accuracy in the exact preplanned locations.

Healing in Comfort

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota is dedicated to advanced surgical care as well as compassionate, comfortable healing. That is why every patient room in the hospital is private. Our patients also benefit from our in-house concierge services. We take care of everything so the only thing you have to focus on is healing.

da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System

The da Vinci® Si™ takes minimally invasive techniques into a new era, further minimizing the physical and emotional impact of surgery on patients. Surgeries are performed through small incisions, which replace the large incisions needed for conventional open surgeries. Advanced Technology Robotically-assisted minimally invasive surgery represents a third generation of surgery, one which builds upon the advances to open surgery introduced by minimally invasive surgery. Robotic technology takes surgery beyond the limits of the human hand, introducing precise, versatile instrument movement combined with threedimensional visualization of the operative site. The Potential Benefits of Robotic Assisted Surgery Some of the major benefits experienced by surgeons using the da Vinci Surgical System over traditional approaches have been greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved dexterity, enhanced visualization and improved access. Benefits experienced by patients may include a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk of infection, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, less scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to normal daily activities. None of these benefits can be guaranteed, as surgery is necessarily both patient- and procedurespecific. Single Site Procedures The da Vinci® Si™ allows for single site procedures. This means that a surgical procedure such as the removal of a gallbladder can take place through a single incision in the belly button. This is especially good news for patients concerned about scarring. | 113

f you have ever experienced joint pain in the back, knees, hips or shoulder you know how it can affect not only your daily activities but your game as well. Arthritis, strained ligaments or tendons limit the movement of your joints. You

feel stiff. As a result, this prevents you from consistently turning through the ball on any shot. To make matters worse, as you continue to play through the pain, you will often compensate for the pain by altering your swing. This will result in over use of other joints, potentially setting the stage for additional injuries. Anti-inflammatory medications can give temporary relief, but obviously will not correct the underlying problem. Medications work, but simply mask the underlying problem.

The Light Answer

How is the treatment done?

Class IV deep tissue laser therapy is an FDA approved modality that is useful to reduce inflammation, increase circulation and decrease pain. Laser therapy is a non-invasive, safe and effective treatment where infrared light is used to affect damaged tissues. The net effect of Deep Tissue Laser Therapy is reduced pain, increased soft tissue repair and improved wound healing. The laser works by converting light energy into biochemical energy, resulting in normal cell function, which causes symptoms (PAIN) to disappear.

The laser is placed in contact with the skin allowing the healing energy to penetrate tissue, where it interacts with various intracellular bio-molecules resulting in the restoration of normal cell function. This also enhances the body’s natural healing processes. In essence, light energy is converted into biochemical energy. This results in restored normal cell function. The process results in a disappearance of symptoms and increases the speed at which your body heals.

Why Laser is Different? Laser therapy is a medical breakthrough therapeutic device with unparalleled applications and outcomes. The Laser works by converting light into biochemical energy, resulting in normal cell function, which causes symptoms (PAIN) to disappear. The primary biological action of laser results from stimulation of cellular transport mechanisms in the mitochondria, cell membranes and epithelial tissues. This action causes the release of vasodilatation chemicals, the stimulation of DNA and RNA (building blocks) synthesis, an increase in enzyme production, an increase of superoxide dismutase activity, normalization of tissue pH, and increased ATP production. The increase of vasodilatation (blood supply) and improved microcirculation will increase the supply of cellular nutrition promoting tissue repair and remodeling (which means you heal faster). Significant reduction in edema (swelling) is also noted.

Other Effects of the Deep Tissue Laser are the immune system response is stimulated, lymphatic drainage is improved, production of growth hormone is increased & the body’s natural healing processes are enhanced. The beneficial physiological changes noted above are the result in tissue regeneration and cellular stimulation. You will notice that we, at the Sarasota Sports Medicine, focus on reduction and elimination of pain by using one of the most powerful therapy lasers available to help our patients. Simply stated reappears!

What does laser therapy have over other forms of therapy? It does not require the use of drugs or surgery, there are less side effects or risks, and it is quick and convenient. (continued on page 116)

How Can Acupuncture Help Me? Acupuncture provides pain relief for many kinds of chronic pain. Back pain, headache, and whiplash from car accidents respond well to acupuncture treatment. Sprains or strains from sports injuries can be treated. Acupuncture reduces the pain of repetitive stress injury, which affects many people working with keyboards or musical instruments. Painful migraines, cluster headaches, and tension headaches can be treated with acupuncture. Painful joints from arthritis can be greatly relieved. Symptoms of stress also respond very well to acupuncture care. Anxiety, depression, and insomnia are relieved, providing support for people going through a hard time, or anyone suffering from a busy life. The deep state of relaxation you experience during treatment begins to relieve anxiety and stress from the very first session.

(continued from page 114) Studies have shown that it is equal to or more effective than other forms of physical therapy. Pain relief is often immediate.

Does it hurt? What does the treatment feel like? There is little or no sensation during treatment. Occasionally, one feels mild, soothing warmth. There is no pain associated during laser application. Laser treatment is relaxing and some people even fall asleep. On the other hand, it sometimes occurs that pain can increase or temporarily worsen 12-24 hours after a treatment session. This is because the laser light starts the healing process. This type of pain is particularly likely to arise when the health problems are chronic in nature. It usually subsides after a few days but can, in rare cases, last longer. This is a normal reaction if it occurs, and will subside.

How long does the treatment take? The typical course of treatment is 10-minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Acute conditions may be treated daily, particularly if they are accompanied by significant pain. More chronic problems respond better when treatments are received 2 to 3 times a week. Treatment plans are determined on an individual basis.

How many treatments does it take? This depends on the nature of the condition being treated. For some acute conditions, 2 to 6 treatments may be sufficient. More chronic conditions may require 6-10 sessions. Conditions such as severe arthritis may require ongoing periodic care to control pain. Our promise is ‘Better in four or schedule no more!’ Now that says it all.

How long before results are felt? You may feel improvement in your condition (usually pain reduction) after the very first treatment. Not everyone responds to laser therapy and results cannot be guaranteed. Each treatment is cumulative and results are often felt after 2 to 4 sessions. Treatments just take a few minutes, however the therapeutic effect continues to sooth and heal long after you leave our office. We are so confident in our laser that we offer the Four Visit Guarantee

orthopedic and medical massage techniques to relieve your pain fast!

Is it a cold laser treatment? NO! Our laser is a Class-4 Deep Tissue Laser with much deeper penetrating power. No cold laser on the market today can come close to the fast-acting therapeutic effects of our Class-4 device. Chronic pain relief and hard-to-fix cases are our specialty. We have many patient’s who have tried cold laser therapy with no success and with just ONE Class IV heat laser treatment they start feeling better. All lasers are not created equal!!!

How do I know if laser therapy is right for me? We will evaluate your condition and perform a complete laser therapy examination to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure. Call us to schedule your complimentary evaluation and Q&A session. The only way to know is to try a course of therapy.

Can laser therapy be used over medical implants or over metal? Yes, laser therapy is a light treatment. No heating is involved with the surgical or metal implants. It can be used safely with no side effects. It is extremely effective for post-operative wound healing. Many hip and knee replacement patients see us for care.

Is it covered by medical insurance? Some insurance covers the procedure, but not many. Most patients who decide to receive the benefits of laser therapy are sick and tired of being sick and tired, so they choose to seek this effective method of treatment on their own. Price is usually not a consideration when you have been suffering for so long.

Are the results long lasting? Therapeutic Laser Therapy is about healing. It’s not about masking or covering up a condition. When you feel better from this therapy… it’s because you are better. Therefore, results have been found to be quite long lasting.

Can it be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment? Yes, laser therapy is even more effective when combined with other forms of therapy, including physical therapy, chiropractic, massage, soft tissue mobilization, electrotherapy, and following surgery. We combine our heat laser therapy with specialized 116 |

The opportunity to help launch The Concession more than made up for it. It was a great honor to participate in the grand adventure that is The Concession. I got to work with Tony and Kevin Daves and then finally the Cassidy family, the very gracious people that own and operate The Concession now.

I also learned about “Golf Food” – and what I learned is that the golfer is much more passionate about golf than he is about food. The golfer wants to drive his cart with one hand and eat with the other – and he doesn’t want the hand he is eating with to get greasy and ruin his grip on the club. Thus the ultimate “Golf Food” … is the hot dog - in a very good, absorbent napkin.

Golf Food –

In 1895 the Archbishop of Canterbury described golf as “… a game whereby a small ball is knocked into a small hole with an instrument singularly ill-suited to the purpose.” As a kid I took the quote as a directive. I neglected to pick up the game. I have no idea why I followed a Protestant bishop’s advice yet showed no regard for the advice proffered by all of the Irish Catholic bishops I was related too. My true introduction to golf began about eight years ago. Tony Jacklin told me that he and Kevin Daves and Jack Nicklaus were going to build the best golf course in America and they wanted me to do the food. I was daunted by the responsibility but was also flattered by the attention of such illustrious company. I accepted. A week later, while on a hockey journey with my son through the frozen wastes

of Minnesota, I received a call from the Publicist for The Concession. She informed me that in two hours I was going to be interviewed by Lynne Kasper of NPR’s “The Splendid Table”. It was to be a live national broadcast. The subject was to be “Golf Food”. I had no idea what “Golf Food” was. My son and I were staying in a cheap hotel next to a hockey rink. The only way I could get cell phone reception was by standing on the bed and pressing my cheek up against the frozen hotel window. I was draped in bad polyester drapes. Throughout the interview I looked like an idiot and I sounded like one too. I had no idea what “golf food” was. I took a politicians’ approach - no matter what Lynne Kasper asked me about “golf food” I talked about Rack of Lamb. It was a chilling and humiliating experience.

Our passion for perfect food at The Concession led us down a giddy path in pursuit of the tastiest hot dog we could build. We started with a great, allbeef dog. Then we wrapped it in bacon - because everything tastes better with bacon. And then we fried it - because everything tastes better fried. We served it in a grilled bun brushed with garlic butter - because bread always tastes better with garlic butter. And then we trickled the whole thing with truffle oil and served it with béarnaise because we could. When Tony Jacklin tasted our hot dog he said, “Wow. But it is going to give me a coronary.” So we called it the “heart attack hot dog.” At “eat here” we serve them with a short term will. Sean Murphy owns the Beach Bistro and the “eat here” restaurants. Comments and threats can be directed to

We all know Emeril is an incredible food architect. He has developed a viewing audience of a hundred million people. But what makes him really cool is the Emeril Lagasse Foundation. Emeril’s foundation has contributed over five and a half million dollars to causes that help young people learn life skills and talents that can build better lives. I first met Emeril over twenty years ago. I had been operating the Beach Bistro for about five years. Every critic, food writer and new “chef” was drinking the Kool-aid that was “cuisine minceur” - plates with little bits of food and parsley water. I wasn’t getting it. We were serving big chops and seafood stews and steaks with lush mashed potatoes and killer gravy. It was about then that I was invited to a cooking demo featuring a number of chefs. One of them was some kid from New Orleans, a new rising star. He looked like he was about twelve. He prepared a magnificent chicken stew with lush mashed potatoes and killer gravy. I felt vindicated. It was a good day. I bought a cookbook and he signed it.

And then there was Emeril. He pulled up in a limo van and made his way through introductions and hellos and wires and lights. He was gracious but a little subdued. He seemed a tad uncomfortable in the close quarters. He retired to his limo bus for make-up. It was disconcerting to see him leave the building. I was hoping he was coming back. Than the crew switched on the lights...and the power went out. There are times in your life when the whole board seems to tilt and all the pieces are in danger of sliding off. This was one of them. We called electricians and ran in and out and around throwing off and on breaker switches until the power came back on. Right about then a glass of wine seemed like a great idea. As I was popping the cork Emeril came back in.

About a month ago a man called and told me that Emeril wanted to come to my restaurant and tape a television show. After talking to him for a while I began to believe him.

Emeril’s team began arriving in waves - trucks filled with cameras and lights and cables. There were makeup people and lighting people and key grips and writers and producers and camera crews and security. We had to move out most of the tables and chairs in the Bistro to get all the stuff and all the people in.

As the crew put the restaurant back together we finished another glass or two and he talked about his current passion - his foundation and the joy he was celebrating at the success of projects to feed inner city kids at school and train troubled youths in the restaurant trades so that they could reconnect and develop productive lives. We made plans to get together again. He took the time to have his picture taken with some of the staff. And the limo bus swept him away. He was a great guest. It was a great day. Emeril is cool.

That kid became Emeril, the first rock star chef, the most famous chef in the world.

The big day arrived. We had painted everything that didn’t move and cleaned the place inside out.

We shared the bottle and did the show. Two locations and six dishes later he was praising my rack of lamb. He loved the Bistro Bouillabaisse and told me that the Bistro’s Food Heaven was amazing and that I should be locked up for being crazy enough to imagine a dish with lamb, butter-poached lobster and foie gras all on one plate.

The famous “Hogan Table” at Shady Oaks C.C.

In the early stages of my culinary career, I worked as a private chef to billionaire Texas oilman W.A. “Tex” Moncrief. He was an avid golfer and member of the prestigious Shady Oaks Country Club in Ft. Worth. Mr. Moncrief also happened to be best friends with Ben Hogan and Ben’s brother, Royal. Although I’d never golfed before, I was aware that Ben was a legend in the game and I was fortunate to spend time with him and his lovely wife, Valerie, on many occasions. Whether we were off in the private jet to the Moncrief’s home on the golf course in Palm Springs, or their ranch in Gunnison, Colo. for trout fishing, the Hogan’s were often along too, and as I became more familiar with these gentlemen I came to realize how they lived their lives with a sense of extreme comfort. They were familiar with their environs and they always knew their expectations would be met or exceeded. When my wife Shay and I opened the Bijou Café in 1986, we
