Since 2006, Berlin is Europe’s first and only »UNESCO-City of Design«. At the same time this was the main reason for founding CREATE BERLIN, an interdisciplinary network, which is presenting Berlin Design in more than 80 events worldwide since now.
Organized under the auspices of UNESCO, this competition is the first joint project carried out by the seven UNESCO Cities of Design. CODE stands for City Of DEsign, and for each individual UNESCO Design City’s own unique code. More than 500 poster motifs where placed on columns and in underground stations all over Berlin.
All poster motifs were placarded city-wide on columns, in underground stations and bus-stops. This was possible due the kind support of Wall AG. On selected spots members of CREATE BERLIN presented special installation.
The 20 finalists as well as the gold-, silver and bronze winners were condignly celebrated during the CREATE BERLIN summer party at the Bauhaus Archiv – Museum für Gestaltung. In addition to a prize money the gold winner Martina Wember also won a four week stay at Buenos Aires Centro Metropolitano de Diseño.
In summer 2010 all other Cities of Designs organized the CODE competition. A jury of five experts in Buenos Aires, Kobe/Nagoya, MontrĂŠal, Shanghai und Shenzen has selected ten winning posters, which together form a travelling exhibition that has already been exhibited in all other UNESCO Cities of Design. In december they reached its last station in Berlin and were exhibited in SOHO HOUSE.
In 2011 the Unesco Cities Of Design will initiate the next competition. CODE Souvenirs starts in May.
