sessions - thursday, september 27 8:00 AM-9:15 AM Add-On Seminar: Jumpstarting Your DAM Implementation with PSV Prism Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) If you are a magazine or other design-oriented publisher, there is an off-the-shelf framework that can speed your DAM implementation. This session provides a technical overview of the new PRISM Source Vocabulary — a framework for DAM implementation. Here, you’ll discover: • The difference between design-based and content-based publications; how their workflows differ and why a DAM is appropriate. • The role DAM plays in dynamic content architecture. • The taxonomies and controlled vocabularies that PRISM 3.0 can provide. • How using a PSV framework can shorten the DAM implementation cycle. Presenter: Dianne Kennedy, IDEAlliance Cost: $99 8:00 AM-9:15 AM Add-On Seminar: Why DAM? The Basics Of What A DAM Can Do For YOU Sutton Place What is DAM and What is Necessary for Success? A fundamental overview of the key components of a DAM and what you need to know to launch a successful one. • What is the vocabulary of DAM? • What is the relationship between your company’s Content Strategy and DAM? • What is a Metadata Strategy? Where do Taxonomies and Rights Management fit? • How to choose the right DAM vendor? • What about implementation and integration with existing systems? • What happens after launch? Are Q/A, Training, Maintenance, and Governance absolutely necessary? Presenter: Joseph Bachana, DPCI Cost: $99 6

9:30 AM -10:30 AM KEYNOTE: Collaborative Innovation: Co-Create Your Way to DAM Maturity Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) Traditional forms of awareness building in the form of outbound marketing cede ground to collective storytelling around the brand. Tightly scripted production gives way to crowd funded development and distribution. These trends influence and complicate the ways in which people who manage digital assets pursue their work. How might digital asset managers apply the same practices that define collaborative co-creation to their own purposes? In this special interactive keynote, Spigit’s innovation architect, Doug Collins, will engage with conference participants to determine the ways this trend influences and redefine the rules of Digital Asset Management. Bring your most compelling questions and your best ideas. We’ll co-create the keynote by exploring the phenomenon together. Doug Collins writes a bi-weekly column for Innovation Management magazine. Read his latest article: “DAM Promising: Collaborative Innovation Meets Digital Asset Management”. Doug Collins, Spigit, Inc. 11:00 AM-12:00 PM Making Workflow Work for YOU Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) Managing workflow is a tremendous challenge. From content creation and manipulation, to delivery and storage, processes can vary; yet whether you are working with still image asset for a non-profit, video assets for a large organization or managing your company’s entire end-to-end pipeline, some of the same issues still remain. In this session, three experts from very different organizations will reveal the asset life-cycle in their DAM system and will reveal what you must know before you lose track and potential value of content. Key issues that this panel of experts will explore include:

• Workflow vs. DAM • Metadata, encoding and encryption • End-user experiences • Distribution management and delivery mechanisms • Storage management Panelists: Andrew F. Mannone, America’s Test Kitchen B.J. Gray, Victoria’s Secret Carol Thomas-Knipes, LogicSource Nate Cooper, ProMAX Systems Moderator: Aaron Holm, Industrial Color 11:00 AM-12:00 PM How To Select a DAM System: Best Practices, Pitfalls To Avoid and a Look at the Market in 2013 Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) In the market for a Digital and Media Asset Management system? Looking for a better way to manage your brand assets, and wondering if there’s an online dating site that will allow you to use the perfect algorithm, matching your needs to the best possible solution? This session is for you. You’ll learn about the most important criteria when creating a shortlist, what should really be in that (brief) RFP, and how to plan a vendor demo that’s meaningful and useful to you. Led by The Real Story Group, a buyer-focused, vendor-independent research consultancy, this session will deal the straight dope

on pitfalls to avoid and solid paths to follow. Presenter: Irina Guseva, Real Story Group 12:00 PM-1:30 PM Lunchtime Tabletop Discussions Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) Discuss the topics impacting you the most over lunch with your peers and exhibitors. Open seating. • DAM as a Corporate Initiative — Dan McGraw, Seven Dials Media • Big Data — Tom Leyden, Amplidata • Evolution & Revolution of Your DAM Implementation — Thomas Schleu, Canto • Future Trends in DAM — Joseph Bachana, DPCI • User Experience — Jason Bright, Media Beacon • Standards — Dianne Kennedy, IDEAlliance • DAM Project Success — Alan Pelz-Sharp, 451 Research 12:15 PM-1:15 PM Work In Progress Is DAM for Creatives Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) Most creative teams cannot work in the DAM. There is a disconnect between the features, speed and UI of most DAM systems and the needs of creative users, leaving creative teams with cabinets full of hard drives and outdated and inefficient processes. Attend this session to discover how your team can

simplify and control the creative production process. You’ll see how engaging user experiences on the iPad and the GLOBALedit LightTable — using Samsung SUR40 with Microsoft Pixelsense™ — can enable hands on team collaboration. We will also share how leading organizations such as Turner Broadcasting, Comic Relief and Victoria’s Secret manage massive volumes of Work In Progress content and streamline workflows. Other topics include breakthroughs in highspeed file transfer technology and information on how the touch computing revolution will influence DAM. Presenters: Matthew Glueckert, Industrial Color Aaron Holm, Industrial Color 1:30 PM-2:30 PM Using Taxonomies and Metadata to Deliver Multiplatform Content From Your DAM Systems Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) As organizations begin to exploit multiple platforms to reach diverse audiences, they are faced with a key content delivery challenge: how do we maximize the potential of each platform yet provide coherent consistent content that articulates our brand? In this presentation, we argue for development of an organizational Technical Content Strategy, which utilizes taxonomies and other metadata to enable the organization to effectively and efficiently deliver multiplatform content from a DAM. We will define the delivery challenge, define Technical Content Strategy (TCS) and its components, articulate TCS’ importance in enabling organizations to reach next generation content delivery, provide real examples and case studies of TCS in action, and provide a detailed set of tasks to support the audience’s ability to develop a technical content strategy and integrate it into their DAM content delivery processes. Presenter: Gary Carlson, Gary Carlson Consulting

1:30 PM-2:30 PM The DAM Truth: You are Introducing a Work Culture Revolution When You Advocate for an Asset Management System Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) It is easy to get caught up in the idea of greater efficiency when you hear vendors talk about things like “automating your workflow” and “storing everything in one place”. When you get to the point that you think your company will benefit from organizing materials into a central repository for employees and/or vendors to use, the next step is to understand that you are about to start a revolution in just about every aspect of how people work in your company. While the benefits of a DAM might be crystal clear in your eyes, you need to recognize that you will have to spend a significant amount of time championing the benefits of such a culture shift to give your DAM ideas a fighting chance of success with the rank and file. Presenter: Christy King, UFC 3:00 PM-4:00 PM Assets & Data — What is the Big Deal? Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) Big Unstructured Data is getting quite a bit of attention these days due to some formidable growth predictions — and it’s no longer restricted to analytics projects. While unstructured information can come in many flavors: documents, rich media, metadata, content, user-generated content, RSS feeds, email, geospatial data and XML, this information can be particularly difficult to monetize. As data created moves past terabytes and into the petabyte scale, companies need to determine the best way to store, manage and analyze all this information to be able to turn it into logic…and profit! In this session, we’ll outline some of the ways you can start to tame this data beast. Panelists: Tom Leyden, Amplidata Alan Pelz-Sharp, 451 Research Ranajit Nevatia, Panzura Sarah Berndt, Johnson Space Center Luc Comeau, Dalet Digital Media Systems Moderator: Robin Harris, StorageMojo

3:00 PM-3:30 PM Benefit Cosmetics Case Study Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) Benefit Cosmetics has three main product launch cycles per year, staggered by priority and availability across 39 countries. The key element is availability of product and market material, which in the past had not been centralized. This resulted in disparate marketing campaigns and disjointed launch campaigns. The CEO chartered the Global Information Services (GIS) team to find a solution that would aggregate digital assets and coordinate distribution. The team conducted a needs assessment and devised an evaluation criteria. After a successful pilot phase, the team was successful in devising a multiphased implementation plan which included user training and knowledge transfer to Benefit’s new Digital Manager. Because of that success, other teams in the organization are clamoring to use the centralized digital asset collateral system. Presenter: Bjorn Pave, Benefit Cosmetics

3:30 PM-4:00 PM In Transit Images Case Study Moving the Online Photography Business Forward with DAM Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) See the ways In Transit utilized DAM to propel its business forward. This insightful discussion will show how In Transit transitioned its business costs pre- and post-DAM; the criteria considered to select the right system to ensure maximum network compatibility; the system’s capability to grow In Transit’s library; its multiplatform abilities; and how In Transit managed the system’s integration to its internal Web portal with no designated IT personnel. We’ll also cover the measurable benefits the group has seen since the implementation of a DAM, including a long term time saving of 20 percent, along with how In Transit plans to manage its expected growth — doubling its library assets. 4:30 PM-5:00 PM Turner Case Study Revolutionizing Creative Workflow Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) Modern technology has improved workflow efficiency over the years, but the immediate human interaction that occurs with physical, tactile media has been sacrificed in the process. Christopher Grakal, Vice President of Photography and Digital Asset Management at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., will demonstrate how his team has incorporated cutting edge technology into his team’s day-to-day creative production process. You’ll see how easy it is for any creative production team to bring photo editing, image markups, layout creation and collaborative review sessions to life in real-time. 5:00 PM-5:30 PM IBM Case Study Rooted in the Archives: The Contributions of Heritage to the Corporate Brand Experience Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) For many years, most corporate archives lacked an effective business case for digitizing en masse the analog materials in their collections since the ROI for that expenditure was not clear. However, that may now be changing. Paul Lasewicz, IBM’s Corporate Archivist, describes the strategic value IBM derived from linking its heritage to current business activities. He shows how even the minutia of the IBM Archives holds current business value. Using the ongoing contributions to the company’s client, industry and country teams as examples, Lasewicz will pose that the immediate returns on the large-scale digitization of analog archives may, for the first time, be sufficient to justify its costs. Presenter: Paul C. Lasewicz, IBM

8:00 AM-9:15 AM Add on Seminar: Digital Rights Management Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) As companies are required to provide digital content in every form and format for every platform, the challenge of managing all of the various usage rights associated with each individual asset becomes enormous. But what is digital rights management? And how can it be implemented? This lively and informative seminar will address those questions with examples, standards and best practices. As a result, you will be better equipped to help your company understand how develop the right digital rights management solution for your business or to ‘tweak’ the one you currently have. Presenter: Linda Burman, LA Burman Associates Cost: $99

8:00 AM-9:15 AM Add On Seminar: Metadata Interoperability and New Techniques Sutton Place (3rd Floor) This was the year that making Metadata met Big Data and micro-tasking. These new techniques are revolutionizing how metadata is developed and deployed. Alongside these developments, new schemas are changing how metadata is revealed to search technology. This informative seminar will be a deep dive into this fundamental DAM topic. We will: • Look under the hood at metadata in different file types and formats • Show you tried and true metadata tools and techniques • Show how to manipulate your metadata for interoperability Presenter: Sam Merrell, ASPP and Synthetic Imaging Inc. Cost: $99 11

9:30 AM-10:15 AM KEYNOTE: The Incentives to Preserve: Digital Assets and Long-Term Motivations Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) According to Harvard professor N. Gregory Mankiw’s “Ten Principles of Economics.” principle number four is “people respond to incentives.” This is clearly the case when it comes to digital asset managers (DAMs) and digital preservation professionals (Preservationistas). While there are differences between the two groups, there are just as many points where the interests overlap. The challenge is identifying these points of intersection and then teasing out shared incentives strong enough to motivate each participant to potential collaborative action. Lazorchak will discuss five key “incentives to preserve” and highlight ways that our communities can work together to ensure preservation happens. Butch Lazorchak, Library of Congress

10:30 AM-11:15 AM Social Semantics for an Effective Enterprise Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) The importance and nuances of human interaction are often deemphasized when focusing on automatic generation of semantic markup, which results in dissatisfied users and unrealized return on investment. The Social Semantic Web (s2w), reaches beyond the search box to transport us from a collection of hyperlinks to meaningful, real time knowledge sharing. The s2w facilitates the fluid transition of meaningful information from the source to the user. As users consistently qualify the value of information sets through the act of selection, they are the de facto stakeholders of the Social Semantic Web. Employers are the ultimate beneficiaries with a better informed, more decisive workforce; one not achieved with an IT miracle technology, but by improved human-computer interactions. Johnson Space Center Taxonomist Sarah Berndt and

Joseph Busch of Taxonomy Strategies will discuss the planning, development, and maintenance stages for components of a semantic system while emphasizing the necessity of a Social Semantic Web for the Enterprise. Identification of risks and variables associated with layering the successful implementation of a semantic system are also modeled. Presenters: Sarah Berndt, Johnson Space Center Joseph A. Busch, Taxonomy Strategies 10:30 AM-11:15 AM I Want My DAM — How Do You Convince Your Management and Finance Executives to Fund Your DAM Project? Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) You are not a money person but you know that you need to convince your management that DAM is the right move for your organization. Do terms like ROI and TCO sound like Latin to you? We will give you a crash course in Finance 101 by covering these topics:

• You know that you need to move your workflows into the 21st century but how do you get the funding you need for your DAM? • What is the best way to show project feasibility in a way that management will understand the importance of your system? • How using talking points about “efficiencies” and “saving the environment” might not be the best strategy. • How do you get funding when there is “no money available”? • How phasing your DAM might be the key to approval. • What do you do when a project is only partially funded? • Some strategies for DAM financial success for both large and small companies. Presenters: David Ginsberg, ElegantWorkflow.com Christy King, UFC

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Harris Intensive Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) CBS Worldwide Distribution: Growing its Business through Digital Asset Management CBS Worldwide Distribution (CWD) is the domestic syndication and international distribution division of the CBS Television Network. The mission of CWD is to consolidate and fulfill all aspects of program distribution for CBS as well as programming for international distribution companies. Its content distribution today is a complex, multi-faceted workflow that involves regionalized, niche versions of content, standards conversion for worldwide markets, foreign language dubbing and sub-titling, and content conversion into myriad formats for webbased, mobile device based, and streaming media playback in a variety of forms and formats. Learn how CWD is utilizing DAM to manage the entire life cycle of a content asset — from ingest to cataloging to storage and retrieval — for modern multiple platform distribution. Cindy Parrish, Product Manager, Harris Digital Asset Management Richard Hart, Vice President Entertainment Production and Technical Operation, CBS Television Network 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM Top 10 Reasons Why DAM Projects Fail Sutton Place (3rd Floor) According to recent studies, 68% of all IT (including DAM) projects fail or fall short of expectations…and in our experience, that number is a conservative one. Most typically with DAM projects we see: costs escalating out of control; projects running late; projects failing to gain acceptance; and organizations buying the wrong technology. In this session, Alan will provide you with insights into the research he has undertaken into why projects fail so regularly and how to better ensure success. Presenter: Alan Pelz-Sharpe, 451 Research 14

12:30 PM-2:00 PM DAMMYs LUNCHEON Sponsored by Seven Dials Media and Supporting Sponsor Harris Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) 2:00 PM-2:45 PM Tablet Publishing: How DAM Can Be Used for Multi-Channel Publishing Grand Ballroom The launch of the iPad signaled an exciting new era of interactive, innovative publishing and almost unimagined new revenue opportunities. But forced to use today’s workflows, tools and technologies, producers of multiple tablet editions are faced with escalating production staff efforts without any accommodation to publication schedules. The challenge of producing welldesigned publications, not only in print, but on a growing number of digital devices, has become overwhelming. In this panel session, you’ll see how implementing a DAM can provide many key solutions to the challenges of tablet publishing. Panelists: John Dougherty, Media Neutral Peter Meirs, Time Inc. Moderator: Dianne Kennedy, IDEAlliance 3:00 PM-3:45 PM The Semantics of Video Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) A new generation of video-oriented Media Asset Management systems is coming online with a greater emphasis on descriptive metadata, rights tracking, and multi-platform support. Stand-alone, single-purpose systems are giving way to integrated systems which can support the more complex workflows of present-day video-heavy media companies. Our panel will look at the current state of metadata standards for video in relation to the evolving needs of media enterprises. Presenters: George Mulholland, truTV Paul Nicholson, Showtime Networks Moderator: John Doughtery, Media Neutral

3:00 PM-3:45 PM What Do You Mean I Need Digital Preservation? I’ve got DAM Grand Ballroom (Theater 2) A common misconception is that digital asset management is equivalent to digital preservation. Yet it’s often hard to see why a DAM solution isn’t fulfilling digital preservation requirements. The distinctions around how the requirements for ingest, storage, data management, access, and administration differ in a typical DAM environment versus a digital preservation environment are nuanced. While DAM serves the goal of immediate access, digital preservation serves the goal of long-term access. On the surface, they appear to have the same functions, but digging deeper reveals that there are important differences. Panelists: Sally Hubbard, HBO Karen Cariani, WGBH Moderator: Kara Van Malssen, AudioVisual Preservation Solutions

4:00 PM-5:00 PM The Future Is Now: A Conversation with the Experts Crystal Ballroom (Theater 1) Join us for an exciting panel with thought leaders who will discuss and debate the topics of innovation and topics that resonated during this year’s conference and will continue to be important well into 2013 and beyond. You’ll explore challenging perspectives and ideas for the future, and you’ll walk away excited, inspired and re-invigorated about the ways the future is happening NOW within the DAM space. Panelists: Jason Bright, Media Beacon Alex Grossman, Active Storage Jess Hartman, ProMax Systems Steve Sauder, North Plains Systems Luis Pelayo, Hollywood Tools Thomas Schleu, Canto Moderator: Dan McGraw, Seven Dials Media

DAM is complex and disruptive

DAM consulting should not be

What if the DAM puzzle could be solved by installing the right software? But your Digital Asset Management initiative needs cultural change management, a solid business case, better workflows, and insight. We are: - DAM and CMS Specialists who advise your strongest advocates and guide your most hesitant stakeholders. - Financial and Technology Modelers who map your business and leverage the infrastructure. - Media Experts with knowledge of vendors, best practices and options in video, print, and photography. - Engineers who create the architecture, develop databases, and champion the user experience.
