In the decade since the last edition of the Mobile Communications Handbook was published, there has been a deluge of new technologies and services in wireless mobile communications. In 1999, the Committee for Wireless LANs released the IEEE 802.11, a standard for the 5 GHz UNI band, which was followed by the release of the 802.11 g standard for the 2.4 GHz band in 2003. Since then, there has been a growing number of wireless IEEE 802.11 standards, including the IEEE 802.11a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,l,n,r,s,p,u,v,k,t, and w. There has also been the establishment of the much higher speed broadband standards as encompassed by IEEE 802.16 which includes, in particular, IEEE 802.16e (dubbed WiMAX) and by a similar technology from Korea called WiBro. The standards connected with IEEE 802.16 have also begun to expand rapidly. In addition to these longer-range wireless standards, very short-distance wireless connectivity, such as Bluetooth and several ultrawideband (UWB) technologies are flourishing for use with earphones and computer peripherals. Other important developments in mobile communications since 1999 are the development of standards for wireless mesh networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and tandem connections of digital cellular, IEEE 802.11, and IEEE 8902.16 networks. These networks are being developed, deployed, and refined at a rapid pace. In the area of digital cellular, third and fourth generation systems have been proposed and redesigned, and third generation systems have been implemented. Finally, the use of video as a driving application for handheld devices has emerged. Streaming video to wireless handhelds is now common. Work is well underway to allow handhelds to capture video and send the video over the variety of wireless networks to other users. All of these developments are explored in Mobile Communications Handbook, Third Edition. With 80 percent new material, this volume brings readers up to date on the quantum leaps made in this technology since the last edition was published in 1999.

About the Editor: Jerry D. Gibson is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Currently, he serves on the Steering Committee for the Wireless Communications and Networking Conference and on the Editorial Board of the Hindawi Open Access journal Advances in Multimedia. He is an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer for 2007-2008 and is a member of the IEEE Awards Committee. His research interests include data, speech, image, video compression, multimedia over networks, wireless communications, information theory, and digital signal processing.

Signal Processing in Radar Systems is devoted to robust signal processing problems in complex radar systems constructed based on the generalized approach to signal processing in noise. The book presents a detailed analysis of various procedures and methods to measure and estimate the main statistical parameters of stochastic processes, such as the mean (or mathematical expectation), variance, correlation (covariance) function, power spectral density, probability density functions, and spikes of energy spectra. It investigates analog and discrete procedures and methods for measurements and errors, which are characteristic of these procedures and methods.
