14th August 2012 Reflection I recently read an interview with Sr Mary Carroll discussing her 50 years of service as a Good Shepherd sister. Much of her service is visiting women in prison. She stated that she tried to live out her founder’s motto “One person is of greater value than the whole world” (St Mary Euphrasia). Sr Mary evidenced that by saying she was speaking to an inmate recently who said, “Oh, I must let you go, I’ve taken so much of your time.” Sr Mary replied, “At this very time you are the most important person in my life.” How often are we less than truly present in our conversations and encounters with others throughout our busy days? Sr Mary indeed models what it is to be a great listener, a true witness in our human struggles to be more like Christ.

Acting Principal As you are aware I am booked in for surgery this Wednesday, and subsequently will be absent from school for the remainder of Term 3. Rob Blackley will be acting Principal of the College in my absence, and Chantelle Gauci will be acting Deputy Principal Students. I am sure that Rob and Chantelle, along with John Christie will provide excellent stewardship of the College during the five weeks that I will be away. I take this opportunity to thank all members of the school community for your thoughts and prayers at this time. Mark Sheehan Principal Celebration Day/Back to Parishes As indicated on the school calendar Tuesday 21st August is our Celebration Day. This is an opportunity to celebrate mass in our local parishes and participate in activities back at school following the Mass. It is a normal school day therefore all students are required to attend Mass within their parish and be at school for the day. If students are absent on the day a parental note is required the following day. We ask for your support in ensuring your child/children attend on the day. It is not an opportunity for them to have a day off school or use the excuse there is not much happening. Student Rolls will be marked. Students will start their day at their local parish church for morning Mass with the parish community as indicated below and return to school by bus for Celebration Day activities with a barbecue lunch included. CRC staff will be at all parishes and supervise the return to school. Finish time will be the normal school time of 3.20pm.

Students are to wear PE uniform and are expected to make their own way to church and are required 15 minutes before Mass begins. Mass times:

Once the students return to school they will have the opportunity to be involved in a range of activities planned for the day. The VCAL classes and SRC students have been meeting for the past month each Thursday lunchtime planning and booking rides, ordering food and organising entertainment. Activities include jumping castles, dunking machine, sporting competitions, computer games, entertainment in the form of a DJ and our own CRC’s Got Talent. Many of these activities will be free with some having a small cost of a gold coin. Students will have the opportunity to purchase a variety of food from the different stalls available. The Planning Committee has identified, in consultation with the Principal, the following charities for our support, Br Beausang College, Nairobi, Royal Children’s Hospital, Giving Christmas Tree and Children in Detention Centres. Funds raised will be distributed evenly to the four nominated charities and organisations. The day is a great opportunity to celebrate as a school within our parish communities and here at school and give to those who are less fortunate than us. Robert Blackley Acting Principal


Year 12 Information

Uniform News

Over the course of the week Year 12 students will be issued with an information letter about end of year activities. Preparation for these activities has begun to take place with a number of students involved in organisation committees for the various events.

Summer fitting for Year 7 2013 students will take place Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th August, 12.00— 2.00pm and 4.30 - 7.30pm. Any new students needing to buy summer uniform for Term 4 2012 need to order by these dates. Any student wanting a navy VCE jumper for next year also needs to order by the end of August.

A reminder regarding the Parent Information night this Wednesday 15th. The evening is presented by VTAC and will cover the application process. It will be held in the Hall at 7.00pm.

VCAL Blanket Drive

Thursday Afternoon Activities

Every night over 20,511 people can be found sleeping rough in the street or are affected by homelessness in Melbourne. Homelessness is not a choice people make, it happens. Year 11 VCAL, as part of their ongoing commitment to Social Justice are currently organising a blanket drive. Melbourne winters are cold, so please donate a blanket. A small gift of a blanket can make all the difference. Please drop a blanket or two into the blanket bin located at Student Reception. We will then pass them onto St Vincent de Pauls for distribution to those in most need. Closing date: 28th August. Many thanks.

SEEKING all past students and teachers of Caroline Chisholm Catholic College (comprising St John’s and Christ the King). We are holding a reunion in early November 2012 for the Graduating Classes of 1972, 1982, 1992 and 2002. Students were also issued with an information letter about Parent / Student / Teacher Pathway Interviews. These interviews will be held on Thursday 23rd August between 4.00 and 7.00pm. These interviews provide parents and students with the opportunity to discuss future options relating to apprenticeships, cadetships, TAFE, University and GAP year options. Although these interviews are not compulsory I urge all Year 12 students and parents to make a time and discuss options. All Year 12 Homeroom teachers, Mrs. Jacobovic and I will be present and available for discussion.

Pastoral session: Mock VTAC Applications Chantelle Gauci Year 12 Coordinator St Dominic's Melton Debutante Ball St Dominic's Melton will host a Debutante Ball at Luxor in Sydenham on Friday 28th June 2013. This is the last Friday of Term two. Practises will be held on Thursday nights at Luxor from 6 pm to 8 pm for 9 weeks starting on the 2nd May. Following the popularity of our Masked Ball we are going to have another one. If there are any young ladies wishing to put their name down for this Ball please phone Robyn 97433174 or Sue 97432941. The Ball is open to anyone in Year 11 and older.

Re-enrolment The re-enrolment process is presently underway. The Parish Priests and Finance Committee are currently drawing up lists of families who are behind in their Thanksgiving envelopes and fees. To avoid an interview please make an effort to have your fees and Thanksgiving envelopes up to date. Re-enrolment paperwork will be sent home during next week and is due, with a $100 per child re-enrolment fee, on Wednesday 29th August.


Cabaret Restaurant “Masquerade Ball”

Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th September 2012:

This year’s Cabaret Restaurant “Masquerade Ball” will be staged as is traditional, in the Hall here at CRC Melton on three consecutive nights.

Four course meal and Performance, hors d’oeuvres at 6pm and the evening will conclude at 9.40pm.

Rehearsals have been in full-swing over the last two weeks. We have incredibly talented students at CRC Melton and this year promises to be an outstanding performance showcasing the talent we have.

Tickets are $30.00 each - You can book individual tickets or a full table of 10 people.

Pre-dinner drinks are complimentary but the remainder of the evening is BYO.

Masquerade Ball features a collaboratively choreographed dance by Ashlee Hughes, Karina Dunne, Gemma Feben and Emma Brown; music performances by our VET music students, solo, duets, group dances and much, much more.

Viewing night, Performance starts at 7pm and the evening will conclude at 9:15pm.

This year the College will be holding two sit down dinners with Performances on Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th September. On Friday 7th September the College will be providing a viewing night only (no dinner served). The Hospitality and Food Technology departments will host a delicious four course meal for guests to enjoy, which will be prepared by our Year 10 Hospitality students.

Art Exhibition

Our College Art department will be showcasing the talent and creative skills of our Art, Graphic and Media students here at the CRC Melton Hall.
