FITZALAN GARDEN

Cairns Festival, now in itsCENTENARY 58th year, is again set to be the LAKES biggest event on the region’s calendar. It is a time that we celebrate our beautiful region and the people that call it home. For many years the community has come out en masse to the Grand Parade and fireworks as well as Carnival on Collins. More recently new regulars such as the projections on the City Library, free Family Film Nights and Suburban Satellites have also been embraced. For the first time Cairns Performing Arts Centre will host Festival events with Opera Queensland’s Songs to Die For, Circa’s Peepshow and I Want to Know What Love Is by artists from the Good Room. There will be plenty of opportunity to have a dance with free concerts on the Esplanade and You Should Be Dancing, a free event at the Tanks Arts Centre for everyone from boot scooters to dancehall devotees, street stars to latino kings and queens. With most events FREE there is no reason not to venture out and get involved in our annual celebration.

Cr Bob Manning Mayor of Cairns

Cairns Festival would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land. Cairns Festival would also like to pay respect to their Elders both past and present and extend that respect to other Indigenous Australians.

City Lights Light and music transform the City Library. The City Lights program engages local and national artists to create large scale projections to transform our surroundings through projection mapping and soundscapes. Since 2015 the Cairns City Library has been transformed with projection artworks that speak to the culture, history and tropical lifestyle of North Queensland. This year’s collaborative artwork sees projection specialists AGB Events team up with local artist Hayley Gillespie to transform her wondrous paintings into an animated story on to the facade of Cairns City Library. Through Hayley’s unique visual style we follow the arrival of various migrant groups, and explore the concept of leaving home to find another, often in a place far away.

EVERY NIGHT OF FESTIVAL CAIRNS CITY LIBRARY 7.00PM - 11.00PM FREE. NO TICKET REQUIRED.

THIS YEAR’S THEME IS

Migratory Patterns “We all leave our mark on our environment just as it leaves a mark on us. The story of Cairns is one of union; a place of meeting, sharing of cultural knowledge and arrival.” Hayley Gillespie

CAIRNS FESTIVAL, OPERA QUEENSLAND & CPAC PRESENT

Songs To Die For

Three opera singers, a pianist and a carnival wheel of opera deaths. At the heart of some of opera’s greatest moments, you’ll find a knife, bullet or poison paired with some of the most sublime music ever written. For 400 years, death has inspired iconic composers and beclouded modern legends; Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin, whose songs speak as passionately to us as the music of their operatic counterparts. This cheeky nod to the over-dramaticised deaths of opera’s leading characters is masterfully entwined with pop classics. Presented by three of Opera Queensland’s leading artists, this is a celebration of the end brought to vivid life in a night where Don Giovanni meets Highway to Hell.
