In the fall of 2018, friend and colleague Justin Evangelist approached me to write a solo work for Alto Saxophone and Piano. I was somewhat reluctant to work on a solo work since I had recently finished a tuba and piano solo weeks prior. However, the potential for exploration of this instrument gave me a newfound excitement. Being that this was going to be my first engagement writing for this instrument outside of a concert band setting, I consulted with Associate professor of Saxophone at the University of Akron Dr. Todd Gaffke about some of the techniques and limitations of the instrument.

Growing up in a suburb of Akron, Ohio (Wadsworth), Akron has always been a place of fascination for its historical roots. During the time of writing (and the publishing of this work), Akron was going through a major and much-needed downtown renovation. The city’s slogan being, AKRON: A CITY MOVING FORWARD. This inspirational and optimistic motto blossomed into becoming the inspiration behind the music.

At the time of this work’s conception, The University of Akron Saxophone Studio had experienced the tragic and unexpected loss of undergraduate studio member Anthony Fimognari. Anthony was a musician of phenomenal potential with a warm and radiant sound. He was also known by many for his spirited and endearing character. This work is dedicated to the memory of him.

The first movement is meant to capture the driving energy of Akron in the 70s and 80s. The opening motive is a nod of the extremely popular and successful song by the Akron band Devo (Whip It!). This movement features driving power chords and athletic metric shifts. The second theme features a musical cryptogram which takes the city’s name and pairs it to individual pitches (see figure below).

The second movement takes on a more somber character representing the rust belt period for which hit not only Akron, but also Cleveland, Youngstown, Pittsburgh and the like. It begins with a soft, lonely, and disjunct motive in the pianist’s right hand. This is then echoed by an inversion of the same motive in the left hand. Interspersed with brief saxophone cadenzas, the intention is to showcase the delicate more reflective character of the instrument. Paying homage to the memory of Anthony Fimognari, a melodic idea is introduced by the saxophone at measure 223 in the key of A (see figure 1.1). This heavily features quick large leaps of octaves and 9ths emblematic of the beautiful gestures Anthony could achieve. The opening motive is once again realized only this time a fourth lower. The lush melodic idea presented at 223 returns in the piano as a final sentiment realized in the key of F thus completing his initials AF (see figure 1.2).

In lieu of the idea of construction, the final movement incorporates a few different processes. Opening from a solemn character, a lone saxophone serves as the spark for which ignites the flame that the rest of the movement is built upon. Power chords are brought back with tonality pulling away for a brief moment A/Cm (see figure 1.3). The first process incorporates the reinstatement of the AKRON theme in Figure 1.3 the piano from mvt. 1 as well as an additive process with the saxophone. This process incorporates an addition of a new pitch after 5 statements of the repeated material (see figure 1.4). This is interrupted by the declaration of the previous motivic material

inverted. The music comes to a brief break with the piano echoing the opening material. The next additive process is emblematic of a Reich-like process in which after a certain number of measures a new tone is added to the harmonic framework. The order is as follows (4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 6, 8, and 16). This approach attempts to build the harmonic and rhythmic tension while providing a sense of release at the arrival indicated at measure 469. Returns of the opening falling forth motives return and a final statement of the opening “Devo� theme serves as an appropriate bookend to this energetic and climactic work.

COMPOSER BIO

CODY RAY is a freelance composer, conductor, performer, and educator. Currently serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Western Michigan University. Cody performs in the Aero Brass Quintet and is a regular substitute musician for Kalamazoo College. In the spring of 2019, he received a Bachelors of Music from the University of Akron. During his time at UA, he performed with the University of Akron Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Chamber Orchestra, Brass Choir, New Music Ensemble, The Cleveland Philharmonic, and the Avenue Brass Quintet.

In addition to these capacities, he performed with the University of Akron Faculty Brass Quintet during their 2019 UA Brass Seminar. He has competed as both a quarter and semi-finalist in the National Trumpet Competition. Cody’s primary trumpet instructors have included Dr. Joshua Ganger, Mark Maliniak, Jack Schantz, Scott Johnston, and Dr. Mark Dulin. He has also had the pleasure to participate in numerous masterclasses with world class artists such as Justin Emerich, Michael Sachs, Jack Sutte, Mark Hughes, and Hunter Eberly.

Cody is the founder and Executive/Artistic Director of N.E.O. SOUND, a new music organization in North East Ohio focused on performing new music, collaborating with local artists, and creating a strong community. An avid composer, his works have been read and performed by numerous ensembles including the Grammy Award winning Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Western Michigan University Wind Symphony, Arizona State University Wind Ensemble, The Oberlin Conservatory Brass Ensemble, The University of Akron Brass Choir, and The University of Akron Symphony Orchestra. He has enjoyed the pleasure of receiving numerous commissions throughout his undergraduate and graduate career by both student and professional groups. Cody was the winner of the University of Akron's Composition Competition and recipient of the James P. and Maureen C. Kovach Scholarship for the Performing Arts. His primary composition teachers have included Dr. Richard Adams, Dr. Nikola Resanovic, Dr. Robert Brownlow and Dr. Daniel McCarthy. In addition, he has participated in masterclasses with guest artists including Dr. Anthony Donofrio, Dr. Andrew Boysen, and Mark Camphouse.
