New book reveals the fu and fascinating stor y of Cranleigh Ar ts

To celebrate its 50th year, former trustee Clive Wouters has written a book recording the histor y of the ups and downs of Cranleigh Ar ts and the people who have contributed to its enduring success.

Its origins lie in a group of local societies who needed somewhere to meet, run workshops and present exhibitions and enter tainments.

Cranleigh Arts

50 YEARS AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

A public meeting was held in June 1974 when the Cranleigh Ar ts & Leisure Trust was constituted. Its intention was to raise funds for a purpose-built home on railway land behind M&S but eventually a temporar y home was offered in the old School building. By 1978, after much wrangling, this was formally opened with a week-long ar ts festival to bring into being the Cranleigh Ar ts Centre.

Visionar y people have shaped the stor y. In the 1980s Jack Wagg guided its development towards a truly community-based centre with a plan for how the building could be improved as money was found to enhance the facilities. This came to fruition in 1988 when National Lotter y money allowed for the creation of the main hall.

Money has always been scarce. Fundraising schemes and grants do supplement the income from ar ts activities but twice its future has been threatened by insolvency and imminent closure. Local politics have played a par t in the stor y too when Waverley Borough Council, as owners, have inter vened.

“Cranleigh Ar ts is the envy of many and the jewel in the crown of the village as it has expanded and changed,” says Clive, who was head of per forming ar ts at Hur twood House until his retirement in 2012. “It has not been an easy journey but it emerged from each crisis stronger and better, dedicated to ‘enrich, enter tain and inspire’ the people of Cranleigh Set against local and national economic and ar ts trends this is also a case study of how community ar ts provision has fared in the last 50 years.”

Cranleigh Ar ts – Fifty Years at the hear t of the Community by Clive Wouters can be purchased from the Cranleigh Ar ts box office in person or via our website or online at Amazon from 16 November. All proceeds will benefit Cranleigh Ar ts.
