Camp Moore Confederate Museum

Today, Camp Moore is a museum and is home to hundreds of artifacts. It has a genealogy library where visitors can research names of ancestors or look up some little known fact in the library. Volunteers are eager to share their knowledge - help with a little research or recount the many stories of Camp Moore written and documented in letters and diaries. The weekend before Thanksgiving, every year, Camp Moore hosts a Civil War re enactment. Lawn chairs and blankets are strongly recommended to provide comfort to the visitors watching the Union attacks on the camp - finally disabling it in 1864. All other times of the year, Camp Moore is open Wednesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last tour begins at 3 p.m.

Amite

Welcome! - Central Tangipahoa Amite, incorporated in 1861, is the parish seat. Located in the center of Tangipahoa Parish, it is easily accessible from any location within the area. Amite is well known for its oyster industry, dating back to 1949, and hosts the annual Oyster Festival each March. Downtown Amite is on the rebound with a number of quaint shops and unique stores. Just east of Amite is some of the prettiest rolling countryside you will ever see. Here you will find nurseries, horse and cattle pastures, the skeet club, Springview Country Club and the Sandy-hollow Wildlife Management area. Amite lies at the cross roads of Highway 51 North and South and Highway 16 East and West. Interstate 55 is to the west just outside city limits. The Illinois Central Railroad runs through the town with businesses and residences on either side. Everyone needs a break from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Amite offers an educational, entertaining, and relaxing environment. The Tangipahoa Parish Fair and the Chamber of Commerce Bon Appetite Festival both held in October are among the social functions which can be enjoyed by old and young alike. A Christmas parade is a great way to end the year. Amite Oyster Festival

Independence, “Little Italy” of Louisiana, was created as a result of the New Orleans to Jackson route of the Great Northern Railroad in the 1880’s. It was first called “Rabbit Town” and later called “Uncle Sam”. Feeling a lack of dignity in the name, a Welch immigrant named Christopher Evens gave the settlement the name of Independence. Italian families searching for a place to settle in the 1880’s were attracted by the thriving strawberry industry of the area. Independence slowly became a predominately Sicilian/Italian community. It is more diverse culturally today but is still characterized by its excellent Italian cuisine and its hard working and friendly people.

Hammond

Welcome! - Southern Tangipahoa DELIGHTFUL

DOWNTOWN

by Katie Wainwright

HAMMOND

Spend a delightful day in Downtown Hammond, Tangipahoa Parish’s Cultural Center. Thomas Street is a lively, happening place. Southeastern Louisiana University’s Columbia Theatre, 220 East Thomas Street, starts the Cultural Season with October Fanfare, a month-long celebration featuring Broadway shows and musical entertainment. The stage productions continue all year long. One of the fastest growing universities in the nation, Southeastern is a constant source of creative, scholarly and recreational programs for our area. Across the street, 217 East Thomas Street, the Hammond Regional Art Center brings the best in art to residents and visitors. Walk in and view exhibits by local artists or imports from major museums. Traveling with children? The Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center, 113 North Cypress Street, is an amazing place to learn and explore the culture of the area. The hands-on discovery center experience—passenger in a rising balloon, EMT worker riding an ambulance, helper in a pet hospital, fisherman in a shrimp boat, to name a few— will not soon be forgotten. Stop and have lunch at Italian, Mexican, French or Southern restaurants. Drop in at a wine bar or a little café for refreshments. Browse in exceptional boutiques. Learn to paint at an art shop or discover an old-fashioned fish market. The hours will fly by. Want to keep going? Visit the Downtown Development District, 2 West Thomas Street, and get a list of coming attractions. Or stop at the Chamber of Commerce Office, 400 Northwest Railroad Avenue, and help yourself to free brochures and useful information. You’ll want to come back! And we’re delighted to have you!

Ponchatoula Antique Trade Days Arts and Craft Fair Weekends By Kathryn J. Martin Enjoy a festival-like atmosphere but without pressing crowds and parking a mile or more away? Ponchatoula offers just that each first full weekend in March and again in November! Along the tracks you’ll find tents galore set up displaying everything from buckles to birdhouses, buttons to bags, coins to candles, crockery to crocheting, ornaments to ornate barn woods, doll and dog clothes to dishes, kitchen needs to Coke bottles, political buttons to plants, jars to jams – and that’s not even the half of it! Metal sculptures, cypress lawn furniture, neon signs, paintings – not to mention all the foods available both in the tents and the restaurants nearby offering everything from comfort foods to fine dining. And the children aren’t left out with fun things like face painting, pony rides and a petting zoo to name a few. The stores downtown get in on the act as well with extra booths outside and special bargains inside and out. Each store is different and collectors and shoppers come year ‘round from distant states to load up on collectibles and antiques such as art, furniture, old advertising signs, toys, jewelry, turquoise, stones, rocks and shells and plenty more. As if that’s not enough, the Louisiana Chapter of the Train Collectors Association (an International NonProfit organization of railroad enthusiasts) sets up layouts and vendor booths in the gym of a local downtown church.
