➔ Hosted by John Fluevog Shoes Vancouver & Stephanie Symns. Drop in to John Fluevog Shoes in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood during the festival to view their spring line-up and the works of textile artist Stephanie Symns, displayed for the duration of Crafted Vancouver at this iconic landmark shop. Located in the heart of historic Gastown, John Fluevog Shoes has been serving the good Fluevogers of Vancouver since 1970. A block away from the very first Fox & Fluevog store that started the whole journey, JF Shoes Gastown has proudly returned to its roots. Situated in an all glass greenhouse-esque building, this impressive flagship store also shares the space with John’s Design Studio and HQ.

Of Metaphors & Meaning is a new on-going series of large-scale hand-painted quilts by artist Stephanie Symns. Existing at the nexus of art and design these three large-scale works exhibited at John Fluevog Vancouver occupy a position on either side of the threshold of utility and art, resisting traditional categorization. The works use pattern and deconstruction as a device for abstraction to exemplify continuums/inbetween spaces rather than binary definitions: analog and digital; craft and art; feminine and masculine.

➔ Hosted by REEL Crafted Film Festival Director Richard Olak. Through the cinematic eyes of the filmmaker, REEL Crafted Film Festival aims to better understand “What is Craft”? They manipulate metals, carve wood, form clay, and weave thread to create art that we use and surround ourselves with every day. But how do these (artists, craftspeople, makers) do it? What inspires them? When does the idea start to take form into something tangible? Join us for 2 evenings of short films as the Reel Crafted Film Festival seeks to discover not only how craft is made, but why.

In 1890 Gustav Roedde opened his own bookbinding business as G.A Roedde Bookbinders and by 1893 was successful enough to afford to build a house in the new West End neighbourhood of Vancouver. Roedde House, design attributed to famed architect Francis Rattenbury, is a City of Vancouver-designated Class 'A' Heritage House.

Built in 1909, Hycroft Manor was the first and one of the most expensive homes constructed in the exclusive neighbourhood of Shaughnessy Heights. It was here the McRae family established their estate at the edge of the city, including extensive gardens, stables and an indoor swimming pool reached via a short tunnel from the main house. Under the care of the University Women’s Club of Vancouver, Hycroft thrives as a home for members. Our event with Balvenie takes place in the beautiful green solarium and drawing room.

Brent will give a short presentation of his studio gallery, as well as a tour of his studio & workspace. Brent will discuss the sculptural aspect of his work, and how that ties into craft. The presentation will focus on the sculpture process, and the similarities of art to the craft industry. He will be highlighting a particular dynamic sculptural piece, a large cedar crown, that weaves a story from Brent's collection of the wood to the finished product.

Brent is the fourth generation of his family to be raised within the Pacific Northwest. Ranging from residential to commercial installations, his aesthetic interpretation of the coast has been recognized both locally and globally, showing as far as Paris, London, Japan, Bora Bora and beyond.

The New Craft of Design is Making. Join visiting artists, designers, and makers during this Mini New Craft Symposium at Emily Carr University of Art & Design for an evening of sharing focused on Art, Design and Craft processes and practices. Immerse yourself in New Craft: discover art and craft that spans from ancient practices, to high-tech. At Emily Carr University of Art & Design, the faculty and affiliated researchers of the Material Matters research group have been developing techniques that combine new workflows of digital manufacturing with traditional, material processes which include: ceramics, glass, textiles, and woodworking. This expanded field of endeavour calls for a wider and deeper knowledge of legacy material production techniques (craft) and the appropriation of new digital material production technologies (new craft).

While you are here.... Why not join us for REEL Crafted Film Festival following the symposium, beginning at 6:30pm.

Ancient Greek mythology attributes feminine virtue to textile production, from thus the two become interwoven to form contemporary archetypes in art and society. In The Odyssey, the figure of Penelope preserves her chastity, while her husband fought in the Trojan War, by weaving day and night. This enabled her to avoid the advances of suitors who wanted her kingdom, her fortune and her hand. The figure Arachne was turned into a spider for spurning the advances of the God Apollo. Lastly, the virgin warrior the Goddess Athena oversaw textile production among mortal women.

The artist Ruth Scheuing re-examines these legendary women and brings these heroines to life in a medium intrinsic to their stories: the textile. These myths impart a narrative that intertwines feminine virtue with textile production, a connection that has shaped women’s experiences and roles in ancient and contemporary societies.

For this collaborative exhibition in their Granville Island atelier, Jessica de Haas and Christina Norberg explore the theme “SIGNS OF LIFE”, using the medium of hand made felt. They will be investigating line and form through wet felted and needle felted wearable art, sculpture, and interior installation. Creating all-new works for this exhibit both individually and collaboratively, they have approached the theme from their differing ways of approaching the felting process. Guests are welcome to visit and view the exhibit, as well as learn more about felting by speaking to the craftspeople.

Join your host for a 45 minute tour of the Catherine Regehr working Atelier. Here is an exclusive opportunity to meet and view the work of the cutting, sewing, pattern maker and hand sewing team members in this working Atelier. Catherine's philosophy lies in combining unusual texture and luxurious fabrications together with modern sensibility of clean and timeless shapes. All the pieces in the collection are hand made by artisans in Canada. Many of the textures take a great

number of hours and sometimes days to create, making each piece an original work of craftsmanship and quality. Her home collection is inspired by the textures and repetitive forms often found in the nature of Canada's North where she spends each summer. This is reflected in the signature style and individuality of each piece.

Furniture designer Riley McFerrin started Hinterland Design in 2012 with the core mission to merge the wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest with a refined design aesthetic, and to bring the wilderness to an urban setting with a modest and modern edge. McFerrin starts with simple materials and processes, making each piece with a combination of machinery and hand tools. These tools, often simple in form and of single purpose, transform the wood from felled tree into a finished object. On display at the Railway Street workshop and showroom, Fall/Mill/Join/Finish: The Hand Tools of Woodcraft will explore the transformation of wood from raw material to designed piece.

The Craft Council of BC has invited Debra Sloan to present a talk about her twelvemonth residency in 2018 at the UBC Museum of Anthropology where she was studying and responding to the Anabaptist, Faenza and Delftware held in the Koerner European Ceramic Gallery collection. At the heart of the collection is the Haban ware, made by the Anabaptists, who fled Florence due to religious persecution. Dr Koerner’s collection goes beyond gathering together related objects and instead expresses his philosophical outlook of religious freedom and pacifism, through the objects that he surrounded himself with during his lifetime—important messages in this time of worldwide migration.

Chilkat weaving is a traditional form of weaving practised by Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and other Northwest Coast peoples of Alaska and British Columbia. Chilkat blankets are worn by high-ranking tribal members on civic or ceremonial occasions, including dances. It is unique in that the artist can create curvilinear and circular forms within the weave itself. A Chilkat blanket can take a year to weave. Join master weaver 'Nalaga–Donna Cranmer as she demonstrates one of the most complex weaving techniques in the world. Donna is from

the 'Namgis band of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation from Alert Bay, BC. Donna’s Kwak’wala name is 'Nalaga, which means Daylight Woman. She has been weaving with cedar bark for over 25 years and Chilkat weaving for 16 years. She creates traditional and contemporary pieces.

Learn about the cultural significance and traditional techniques of Coast Salish weaving in this workshop with Jessica Silvey. Using the cedar that was harvested and prepared by Jessica for the workshop, participants will get to take home their own cedar basket creations along with new insight into this traditional craft. Jessica is a self-taught weaver of Coast Salish and Portuguese descent of the Silvey family in Egmont, BC. Growing up with her paternal Grandmother she spent many hours in the forest; it is still her favourite place to be, surrounded by cedar trees and silence. Her love of Coast Salish Basketry comes from the cedar root baskets in her Grandmother's home, baskets of various shapes, sizes and patina's that were woven by her Aunt's and

Grandmother's. The memory of those baskets still speaks to Jessica in a silent language that only weavers understand. Jessica has learned traditional techniques from research as well as trial and error. She harvests and prepares her own materials as well as traditional plants for dyes and medicines.
