From the College of Pharmacy Alumni Association, I hope everyone had a Happy Holiday Season! Typically, as a new year begins, we look at New Year’s Resolutions or goals for the coming year. As you look at opportunities, consider some of the things the Alumni Association can do to help connect you with your colleagues from pharmacy school and create new associations with other alumni and current students in the college of pharmacy. As healthcare-providers, we often focus on helping others, and sometimes forget to focus on our own health. A recent article from the Mayo Clinic focused on how friendships can enrich your life and improve your health. Friends can increase your sense of purpose, boost happiness, reduce stress, help you cope with life’s challenges, and encourage you to live a healthier lifestyle. During pharmacy school, we develop many strong friendships that often continue throughout our life. If you are like me, however, you get busy and reconnecting takes a back seat to hectic jobs and family life. Below are some of the events that the Alumni Association sponsors that are fun ways to reconnect and meet new friends: • A U of U Gymnastic Meet (February) • Alumni Golf Tournament (June) • White Coat Sponsorship and Ceremony (August/September) • Alumni/Student Bowling Night (September/October) • Football Tailgate Party (October/November) • Alumni Banquet (October) Last year due to these events and the generosity of our alumni, the Alumni Association was able to provide five $1000 scholarships to current pharmacy students. We are also looking for a couple individuals that would be interested in serving on the Alumni Board. This is a fun group that requires minimum time commitment as monthly meetings are often held remotely (via WebEx). If you are interested, please contact Danielle Keddington danielle.keddington@pharm.utah.edu or 801-581-7503. Happy New Year and we look forward to seeing you at the 2018 College of Pharmacy Alumni events. RICHARD ENSIGN CLASS OF 1990 2

LEGACY SCHOLARSHIPS 2017 The Pharmacy Legacy Scholarship began with the entering class of 2012. It is awarded to an incoming student whose parent or grandparent graduated from the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. This year we have one student who received this award.
Matthew Jolley is in the class of 2021 and his grandfather, Joel Jolley, was part of the first graduating class of the College of Pharmacy in 1950. He passed away about 7 ½ years ago, but Matt provided a photo of himself trying on his grandfather’s old Navy uniform back in 2009. Matt said about his grandfather, “My grandpa dedicated his life to pharmacy and was well-known throughout the Salt Lake area as being an excellent pharmacist and contributor to the community. I hope to be able to continue his enduring legacy in my pharmacy career and continue to build on what he started.”

With over 150 guests in attendance, over 100 silent auction donors and over 50 monetary donors, you all helped make this a huge success! Because of the generosity of all those who supported the event, the College of Pharmacy, along with an anonymous matching donor, raised $21,946 for the Maliheh Free Clinic. In addition to the $21,946 , we raised another $5,000 to support student community outreach to rural areas in Utah. We are all so grateful and thank you for your support this year and hope you will join us at next year’s Gala on Saturday, March 10th at the University of Utah Guest House! ALUMNI EVENTS Pharmacy Day at Capitol Hill, January 31st
The 6th Annual Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill was held on Tuesday, January 31, 2017.
Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill (formerly called “Legislative Day”) is a day-long event where pharmacists, University of Utah pharmacy students, and pharmacy technicians gather at the Utah State Capitol to advocate for the profession of pharmacy. The day’s activities include: • Various health screenings provided to legislators, staff, and the general public (blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood glucose, and pulmonary function tests). • Vaccination education and administration. • A Declaration by the Governor regarding Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill and an introduction of the pharmacy profession on the Senate Floor and House of Representatives Floor. • Individual meetings with your own personal legislators • Multiple opportunities to speak directly with legislators to voice your opinions about proposed and upcoming legislation impacting pharmacy. • Pharmacy student poster presentations about various ways that pharmacists provide care.
This great advocacy event has been growing in attendance over the past few years, but certain members of our profession have been under-represented in the past, especially technicians and pharmacists. There is power in numbers and every attendee helps reinforce the message. By attending Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill, you can: express your opinion, demonstrate and explain the great services that pharmacy is providing, and learn more about the legislative process that impacts our profession. 14 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER 2017 IN REVIEW

ALUMNI EVENTS 2017 White Coat Ceremony, September 1st
The annual White Coat Ceremony for the College of Pharmacy is the symbolic beginning of the journey our pharmacy students take here at the University of Utah. Alumni are invited to be a part of the White Coat Ceremony by sponsoring a student’s white coat with a gift of $50. Each student and donor receives a card with the name of the student and alumni match who provided their coat in hopes that they will act as a professional mentor throughout their pharmacy career.
This year’s White Coat Ceremony was held September 1, 2017 at Rice Eccles Stadium for the incoming class of pharmacy students, Class of 2021. Once again, the white coat campaign run by the Alumni Association was very successful. We had 61 different sponsors, with some donating multiple coats. The excess money was put towards student scholarships this year. This is a great way for our alumni to connect with the students and the students to our alumni. The main speaker was Dan Witt, one of our admired faculty members. The Alumni Association also had the opportunity to honor Craig Herzog from the class of 1978 as our College of Pharmacy Alumni of the Year! We feel honored to count Craig among our Alumni.
Thank you to all of the donors who sponsored a white coat! We appreciate your support! 17 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER 2017 IN REVIEW
