Knowing campus costs and amenities will help you compare your offcampus housing options so you can determine what the right housing fit is for you. If you are considering living in campus apartments for 2016-17, here are your opportunities to apply or sign up on the campus housing interest list. TEN TIPS FOR LIVING WITH
ROOMMATES 1. Be clear from the beginning. Communicating what you need is one of the best ways to eliminate concerns before they become problems. Remember, your roommates can’t read your mind.
2. Address things when they’re minor. Don’t wait until you’re fed up to address problems or it may be hard for you to remain pleasant.
3. Respect your roommate’s stuﬀ. Don’t borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first. Set these boundaries from the beginning.
4. Be careful of who you bring into your apartment—and how often. Communicate with your roommates about guests before they arrive. Everyone should be okay with guests prior to their visit.
5. Be friendly, without expecting to be best friends. Don’t go into your relationships with your roommates thinking that you are going to be best friends. You should be friendly with your roommates but also make sure you have your own social circles.
6. Be open to new things. Your roommate may be from a different place than you. They may have a religion or lifestyle that is completely different from your own.
7. Be open to change. As the year progresses, realize things will change for you and your roommates. Be comfortable addressing things that unexpectedly come up, and flexible to your changing environment.
8. Address things before they get out of control. If you let things slide, you may suddenly find yourself with a roommate who goes wild. Itâ€™s never too late to deal with a problem head on.
9. Follow the golden rule. Treat your roommate like youâ€™d like to be treated. No matter what your relationship is like at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted appropriately and treated your roommate with respect.
10. Remember to have fun, and learn from the experience. Great stories will come from your time spent living with your roommate(s).

Begin your search early. Most complexes accept applications just after the first of the year.
Understand the types of leases: month-to month vs. a longer term agreement.
Carefully read the lease, and ask questions. At age 18, you are legally responsible for all documents you sign.
Remember that you and your roommates are jointly and separately held responsible for rent.
Know when to pay rent, how to report repairs, and who is responsible for landscaping—you or your landlord.
Keep a copy of all rental documents.
Report problems to your landlord right away. You have 21 days after your lease begins to report needed repairs.

MOVE IN Before moving in, do an inspection. Itâ€™s your right to live in a place thatâ€™s clean and safe. First, notify your landlord of safety concerns and give them opportunities to address them. Then, if unsafe conditions persist, contact Code Enforcement at 805-594-8188.
When you inspect your place, snap away. Email the pics of problems to your property manager and hang on to them.
California law regulates when landlords are allowed to enter your premises. A landlord can enter a unit only for specific reasons, such as emergencies, by court order, when the property is abandoned, to make necessary repairs, or to show the unit for specific reasons. Landlords can only enter during normal business hours. 24 00 Reasonable notice (usually 24 hours) must be given in writing, with some exceptions. HR

Be invested in the community where you live. Strive for good communication. Be considerate and conscientious of your impact on others.
Clear Your Trash • Keep property free of trash. • Put out trash cans 24 hours prior to pickup and bring them in no later than 12 hours after pickup. • Trim weeds and lawns regularly and dispose of clippings properly.
Are you a good neighbor? Good neighbors are thoughtful, thinking beyond themselves. Before they act, they consider how their actions impact other people in their community.
WELLNESS Park Lawfully • •
Do not block driveways or sidewalks. Follow city parking ordinances—vehicles parked on the street longer than 72 hours may be cited and towed. Permits are required in many residential districts near campus.
Celebrate Respectfully • •
The city noise ordinance is enforced at all times—not just after 10 p.m. Fines can be as much as $1,000 per citation. More than one citation may be issued at the same gathering. Residents can be cited for a first offense and are not entitled to a warning. Let neighbors know in advance when you hosting an event. Encourage them to contact you if there is too much noise. Be a responsible party host. Take steps to avoid party crashers. Keep the party indoors.

How to Get Your Deposit Back Cal Poly students who have lived off campus share these tips to boost your chance of getting your deposit back. Document problems. Take pictures of anything that needs attention. Keep it clean. Leave a mess, and you might not get all of your deposit back. Report needed fixes. For normal wear-andtear, donâ€™t wait for your landlord to find it. Give notice. Early move-out is a big reason landlords keep deposits.
