APRTLEDITORIAL

Once again another month has pass nd here I am again attempting to wr few words for the editorial and mor

so afterthe BlackpoolWeekend. Mentioningthe BlackpoolWeeken, turned out to be anothersuccessful with everyonethoroughlyenjoying

The Larsest Antenna in the World

The following is a precise from an article of the same title written by Brian Dance and published in PracticalWireless,September 1983. As one would know,us being all very technical, the length of an antenna is extremely important to the efficiency of what frequency we need to receive thus to receive at VLF the dimensions are xtremely large to obtain reasonable efficiency.

Why listento VLF one may ask but they are requiredfor military use ie submarinecommunicationsand just generalresearch. A group of research workers at Stanford Electronics Laboratory,Stanford,Californiawere interested in the study of radio waves reaching the earth at frequencies ranging from a few hertz down to perhaps 0.001hz.Thewavelengths for this are extremely long ie would as far as the earth to the rnoon thus it would be impossible to construct an antenna.Anyway they came up with an idea to construct a "Peninsula Antenna".lt is known that salt water due to its properties conducts electricity well thus if a suitabte peninsula is found and if electrodes were put at each side and fed with VLF the electricity will flow in the shortest conducting path between the electrodes,in other words it will flow right round the peninsula following the shore line from one electrode to the other. In order to test this idea they experimented in the sumrner of f 975 on a small peninsula called North hleck on Chappaquiddicklsland off Cape Cod,Massachusetts.NorthNeck being some hundreds of metres across they stretched a wire 300m in length across the neck and attached 0.45m sguare copper sheets at each end under the water and then attached a receiver system at the centre. They then received strange wailing sounds from space which require further studying to determine exactly what they are. (continued on page 2)

mselves with only a few of us wit lcts of money to spend, isn't that rig n and Alex!!!! The rally itself was again this year pr well dominated with computer equipment but I suppose that was to expected as it was advertised as a "COMPUTERAND RADIO RALLY", e, although there was plenty to browse over. Moving on,you will all be aware fron the packet message that I sent out th we are thinking about holding a jurnk night. The response to that has been extremely positive so t am hoping th month to go and confirrn a date for about the middle of August for eithe Thursday or Friday evening, but, as always I will keep you posted on developments. I must apologise as well as I still hav chased up the visit to the Fire Brigac due to so many other commitments t I promise you that I havn't forgotten about it. For a change I will keep the editorial short so hope once again you will en the newsletter but as always we do n material....so come on folks!! CONGRATULATIONS

Our congratulations are extended to Bob GM0KDC for his efforts in the RSGB low power contest last year. lt was announced in the April Radcom thatBob was place 3rd overall in the country (although as usual the RSGE got the call wrong ) I sure you will agree that this is a worthwhile effort and I hope RSGB tt him about it hi. Well done Bob! GMTLVJ Gavin, was placed 14th in tt single op fixed section.

fallowlng year a more activeexperimentwas carriedout by stretchingaluminiumwire across t[g neck connected to two galvanised iron pipes immersedin the sea.Theelectrodeswereabout 180mapart. produced an alternating signal by using 4 car relays connected to two 12v car batteries.a measurement of the magnetic field was taken around the peninsula to see how the antenna was performing.Theyfound that an aeroplane flying at altitudes from between 160m to 320m above the island could hear the transmissions. $o there you go folks how about that for an antenna then Biil GMSZL|@ GBTEDN

IS A STATIONON PACKET ? lf like myself you come acrsss the situation where you would like to know if a station is on packet or not then the following may helP. Some BBS's hold a Database called White Pages, often referred to as WP,unfortunately for us GB?EDN doesn't have this facility basically due to there not being enough room on the PG.One BBS that I know that has this facitity is GBTJSC in Bothwell and thus its the reason for use in this example. Therefore to extract information send the following to the BBS. cmd:SP WP @ GBZJSC {cr} Note {cr} = Enter/Return $ubject: WP REQUEST (cr) Text of Message: GM0ALW? {cr} Look for GM0ALW EA3*? {cr} Laok for all EA3 stations (cr) IEX The BBS will eventually reply as a personal nressage to you. Hope this snippet wil! help you at some time. .......tsob Glesgow GM4UYZ@ GBTEDN

PACKET BSX OWNER$ PLEASE NOTE I have just experienced a prablem with my BSX where the AM79{0 Modem Chip kept cn going faulty whenever the BSX was connected to the radio. FAULT $YMPTOMS: (1) DCD flashing randornlywhen no data is being received. {2} On listening to the tx output there was no sign of any tones. {3} The -5 volts going to aero volts. (4) The AM79t0 gets so hot that you cant touch it. {5) lt was only happeningwhen the radio was connected. FIX: The fault resolved to L2 (1OuhInductor) being OPEN CIRGUIT. Ll is an optional component in the BSX and is fitted in the NEGATIVErail for Radio Frequency lnterference (RFl) problems, but it also isolates the 0 volt rail of the TNC to the 0 volt connection from the radio. ln this case with L@ faulty the radio connections had no 0 volt referencewith respect to the TNC's 0 volts. Snippets: ClusterstationsGBTSDXand GBTBDXare now up and running on 144.675 albeitnot 100per cent but I haveworked2 new countries thanksto spot announcementson the cluster. We Still requireinput to YOUR newsletterevenalthor.lghits just an advert! I am afraidI'rnas guilty as anyone but isn't the packetsystemtaking over from havinga good chinwag sn two metresit seemsmore and more that we as amateursare communicating more by digital meansthan by speechand althoughthis modehas a placein life as an amateurits should not takeover. An openingfor discussion?
