CHEHALEM HERITAGE TRAILS This trail project has been ten years in the making and has probably another twenty years to go to completion. As CPRD is able to secure funding, we blaze new trails and connect existing ones in order to make progress on the 70+ mile project. When it’s complete, this trails system will connect Newberg and Dundee, plus Chehalem Park and Recreation District to the greater Portland Metro area and the rest of the Willamette Valley, through a series of pedestrian, biking, equestrian, and river trails.

Trails which are open and ready for your happy feet are located at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course, Schaad Park, Ewing Young Park, Crabtree Park in Dundee, and central downtown Newberg. There equestrian-friendly trails at Bob and Crystal Rilee Park. Still to come are the remaining trails at the golf course, the Central Dundee trails, and any new trails we may blaze at Bob and Crystal Rilee Park once our masterplan for that park is complete. Walk on nature trails surrounding Chehalem Glenn Golf Course and also at adjacent Schaad Park. Yes, you can walk on the trails while the golfers are golfing. These walking trails are mostly flat, with some gentle grades. Some portions have chips underfoot and some, in the wooded areas, are dirt floor and fallen pine needles.

1

Gettman Loop (1.6 miles) - Enjoy views around the south portion of the golf course. Portions of this trail are alongside the course, and some duck down into surrounding forest which will transport you from town into fern-covered creekside trails shaded beneath dense fir trees. Park in the golf course parking lot at the event tent, across from the pro shop. Look for the two trailhead signs near the road in front of the driving range and to the left of the pavillion. Be sure to check out the Camellia Grove in front of the driving range (Sign faces the road and is located between the two Gettman Loop trailheads). Multiple varieties of Newberg’s official flower are identified and flourish beneath the oak trees. 1

CAMELLIA FESTIVAL ANNUAL CAMELLIA FESTIVAL & CPRD 5K/10K RUN/WALK The Camellia Festival is an annual all-day festival in April celebrating the City of Newberg’s official flower the Camellia and its Asian origins. The day kicks off with a 5k and 10k run/walk coordinated by CPRD, followed by performances, a bloom show, children’s activities, vendors and more, inside Chehalem Cultural Center. The festival is also host to the Oregon Camellia Society’s annual statewide bloom show and Camellia bloom competition. Camellias are judged by size, color, form and condition. The bloom show is open to everyone.

CITY OF NEWBERG: OUR REGISTERED CAMELLIA VARIETY The Camellia is the official flower of the City of Newberg. While most cities have official flowers, not many have their own registered variety; Newberg does. There are approximately 300 species and upwards of 3,000 cultivars (varieties) of Camellias. The City of Newberg is the common name of our unique variety. It was originated by Bryan Stewart, who is CPRD’s Park and Landscape Director and also a founder of the Camellia Festival. It first bloomed in 2010, then was propagated by Daniel Charvet of Fort Bragg, California, who registered it with the American Camellia Society in 2018 (ACS #3059). C. complex reticulata hybrid seedling of (C.pit.var. yun. x ‘Purple Gown’ x C.pit.var.yun. x ‘Guilio Nuccio’) x ‘Narumigata’.

10500 NE Parrett Mountain Rd. Newberg, OR

BOB & CRYSTAL RILEE EQUESTRIAN TRAIL The masterplan is being developed for this park, which will include trails. When this process is completed, CPRD will install new signage to trails, provide new maps, and improve existing trails and/or develop new trails on the property. Do you have a horse? Equestrian-friendly trails are open at Bob and Crystal Rilee Park during the masterplan process. Note the trail is closed during the winter months. DIRECTIONS TO THE EQUESTRIAN/PEDESTRIAN WALKING LOOP TRAIL

From 99W, turn onto Haugen Road (right if driving north; left is driving south) and drive 2 miles to the stop sign, where Haugen intersects with Parrett Mt. Road. Turn right onto Parrett Mt. Road. After 1.5 miles, you will reach the small parking lot/trailer pull out on your right, in a wooded area. Look for the CPRD rules and regulations trailhead sign, in the northwest corner of the lot. This is the only access point to this trail where horse trailer parking/loading/unloading is available.

Worden Hill Rd. Dundee, OR

CRABTREE PARK TRAIL .19 miles - This secluded, idyllic park in Dundee features a loop trail on the side of the hill which runs across the back of the park.
