CpH:LITT IS aLL aBoUT DIaLoUge ”denmark is a small language area. For the same reason, it is difficult for Danish literature to make it in other countries and foreign literature has a hard time in denmark too. when danish publishers do import, translate, and publish foreign literature in danish anyway, it is primarily literature from large language areas. that is why it is important that the literature festival not only presents literature from these large language areas, but also from small language areas. You see, literature – especially the unexpected and unaccustomed – can open hearts and minds and grant access to a dialogue with other language areas and cultures. So the writers at the Copenhagen international Literature Festival are here not primarily to promote their own literature, but to meet other writers and to give each other and the audience access to the unexpected, the unaccustomed.” Per Kofod, publisher and member of the CPH:LITT steering committee “the identity of a human being derives, to a very large degree, from language, and at the same time the language (or languages) is an entirely necessary point of departure - both when it comes to understanding the identity of other people and to opening up one’s own identity to others. Language is the ability to reach beneath the surface. Therefore, the exploration of language is of the utmost importance in a world, that is growing more and more globalized, and in a culture, that is becoming more and more image-oriented. One word speaks more than a thousand images.”

From an early age, padilla was drawn to writing, and as he grew older, he became immersed in the literary works of James Joyce, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and robert Louis Stevenson, whose works often centred on the theme of human identity. For his debut, Subterráneos, padilla was awarded the “alfonso reyes” mexican literary award in 1989. and the following years he received a number of prizes and awards for his novels, short stories, and essays. In 1996 he united with longtime friends and fellow writers Jorge Volpi, eloy Urroz, pedro Ángel palou garcía, and ricardo Chávez Castañeda, and collectively they presented a proposal based on their literary criticisms and personal opinions of mexican and Latin american literature. The literary critique, a reaction to the Latin american Boom, became known as the Crack manifesto and was presented as a means for Mexican authors to find their own voice and write beyond Magical Realism. His collection of short stories, Antipodes … , portrays a group of adventurers / a group of adventurous men exploring the boundaries of known civilization, as well as the limits to which a person can be pushed. as the title indicates, the stories place men at the opposite poles of the earth in their respective quests. Ignacio padilla (MX), born 1968, is one of Mexico’s most characteristic, controversial, and award-winning writers and critics. He has written many short stories and novels, and several of these have been translated into other languages, Danish not being among them however. In 1996 he founded, in collaboration with other Mexican writers, the so-called "Crack Generation", which was a critical clash with the predominant Latin-American tendency to write magical realism.

padilla writes in a carefully-crafted style reminiscent of these travellers, isolated in the jungle or halfway up everest, feverishly scribbling longhand in journals, all the time with an eye on prosperity and ego-driven immortality. They should have saved their ink. padilla’s main goal seems to be pointing out the folly and insignificance of mankind.” Excerpt from review by David Abrams in the January Magazine.

For a number of years, he lived in the city of Berlin, which also serves as the back drop for his essay-novel The Glance of the Flâneur (in danish, Flanørens blik, 2000, Batzer&Co). The novel has obtained something of a cult status. the central character of the book, a synthesis of traveling journal, report, philosophical essay, and novel, was the flâneur, whom Walter Benjamin described as a model for the modern intellectual. The flâneur was the writer’s alter ego in pursuit of a personal and European identity. Hallberg is currently arousing great attention in Sweden and other European countries with the book European Trash and in denmark with the book European Trash and in danish with his book The Meaning of Life and Other Worries (in danish Livets mening og andre bekymringer, 2012, Forlaget Batzer & Co.), which has been written in collaboration with the actor Erland Josephson.

Ulf peter Hallberg (Se), a foreign glance on the history of europe martin Walser (DE), born 1927, is one of Germany’s most characteristic social debaters and writers, and his literary work is often compared to that of Günter Grass and Herta Müller. His debut novel, Ehen in Philippsburg (1957), was published at a time where the Federal Republic of Germany had established itself to such an extent afterthe war, that it was now a question about ”moving on”. The drawbacks of this firmly fixed idea were repression, adaptation, and self-denial. And this became themes in the extensive authorship of Walser.

He has written several award-winning screenplays besides the novel American Dervish (Tavshedens smerte, 2012, Politikens Forlag), which is a tale of an American/Muslim family in the United States before 9/11. The Danish newspaper kristeligt dagblad wrote about the novel: “if you enjoyed The Kite Runner you will also rush through American Dervish.” after reading the novel, an American critic wrote: “I got the feeling that I got to know more about the muslim world than I could have learned from reading any non-fiction”. American Dervish was published in the u.s. in January 2012 and in the following months released in 22 languages worldwide. ayad akhtar (us), født 1970, er søn af pakistanske indvandrere i usa. akhtar har en universitetsgrad i teatervidenskab og en uddannelse som filminstruktør og har skrevet flere prisvindende filmmanuskripter foruden romanen Tavshedens smerte (2012, Politikens Forlag) - en beretning om en amerikansk/ muslimsk familie i USA før 9/11. Om bogen skrev Kristeligt Dagblad: ”Hvis man kunne lide drageløberen vil man også stryge igennem Tavshedens smerte.” En amerikansk anmelder skrev, efter at have læst bogen: ”Jeg fik en fornemmelse af, at jeg nu vidste mere om den muslimske verden, end hvad nogen fagbog kunne have lært mig.” Tavshedens smerte udkom i usa i januar 2012 og i de følgende måneder i 22 oversættelser verden over.

Ayad Akhtar (US), a generous new voice in American fiction günday, Hakan (TR), born 1976, has since his debut in 2000 written a total of seven novels. several of these have been sold for translations and film adaptions. Critics in his home country call him an “ugly duckling of literature” and “one of the most remarkable names in turkish literature in the last decade”. One critic called his latest novel AZ from 2011 “a slap in the face”. The novel is about violence, violence from A to Z – in a Turkish family. In this sense both AZ and former Günday-novels are controversial. They question the established structures in Turkish culture. Günday has not been published in danish.

Hans otto Jørgensen (DK), born 1954, is a writer and a former principal at the Writer’s School. He made his debut in 1989 with Tårnet (The Tower) and has, since then, written many books, particularly novels. He is of current interest with Strange Days Indeed (2012, Gyldendal) – a novel that, according to a critic from Politiken, ”renews the genre of autobiography”. The critic from Kristeligt Dagblad calls him ”a blinding stylist” and the critic from Weekendavisen describes his latest book as ”incredibly good”. Strange Days Indeed is the fourth, independent volume in a series of memory collages, which the writer himself calls detective stories. The books draw on the writer’s own history and chronicle the development in Denmark from an agricultural country into a modern service society. The books are folksy and avant-garde at the same time.

She made her debut in 2007 with Lykkejægere (Seekers of fortune), which was classified as being in the genre of portraits. This unusual book consisted of shorter and longer portraits of known as well as unknown Danes, narrated by a “we”, which could be Denmark. The critic from Politiken described the book as ”a dazzling debut” and ”literary pop-art of a high calibre and entertainment value”. Her second book Padder og krybdyr (Amphibians and Reptiles, 2012, Gyldendal) is constructed as the inner, absurd stream of thought of a young lesbian woman, concerning the issue of seeking an addition to the family on market terms within the fertility industry. Jennifer egan (US), winner of the prestigious pulitzer prize, 2011

if you haven’t already heard of Jennifer egan, you will soon. the Brooklyn-based author of the stunning, wholly original A Visit From The Goon Squad (In Danish, Tæskeholdet Banker På, Forlaget Klim, 2012) has been the talk of the town in the U.S. and Europe, thanks in no small part to the Pulitzer Prize, with which she was awarded in 2011.

,,

The Gothamist (a weblog covering New York City’s personalities, news stories, and media) talked to the author about what it feels like to win a pulitzer prize and about the torment of writing again after having won the prize. Here is an excerpt of what Jennifer Egan said: ”Of course, I’ll sometimes sit down to write and be terrified. I guess people think the logic is — now I’m supposed to be good, I won this prize — but I actually am really bad, and now that’s going to be revealed. But the truth is, I think that with every book. I don’t know what I’m doing. That’s the price you pay for doing something different every time. I always think it won’t work out and I’m always afraid of being revealed as a failure. But I’m used to working in those conditions, and I’m confident that no matter what horrible things my cruel unconscious says to me or superego or whatever the hell it is, that I can keep working amidst those words, because I think if the work is interesting it will exert its own centre of gravity and make sure that it gets done. And if the work isn’t interesting, I have to find something that is interesting. So we’ll see. I am willing to write very, very badly. I think that is really my secret weapon. I’m willing to write bad stuff because I know the good will come next.”

In A Visit From The Goon Squad Jennifer Egan portrays the interlacing lives of men and women whose desires and ambitions converge and collide as the passage of time, cultural change, and private experience define and redefine their identities. Bennie Salazar, a punk rocker in his teenage years, is facing middle age as a divorced and disheartened record producer. His cool, competent assistant, Sasha, keeps everything under control—except for her unconquerable compulsion to steal. Their diverse and diverting memories of the past and musings about the present set the stage for a cycle of tales about their friends, families, business associates, and lovers. Jennifer egan (US), born 1962, is the author of The Invisible Circus, which was released as a feature film by Fine Line in 2001, Emerald City and Other Stories, Look at Me, which was nominated for the National Book award in 2001, and the bestselling The Keep. her new book, A Visit From the Goon Squad, a national bestseller, won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, and the LA Times Book Prize. As a journalist she frequently writes in the New York Times Magazine. (For further info check http://jenniferegan. com). Jennifer egan (US), født 1962, modtog i 2011 den prestigiøse Pulitzerpris og de amerikanske kritikeres pris for romanen A Visit From The Goon Squad. romanen udkommer på dansk i maj under titlen Tæskeholdet banker på (2012, Forlaget Klim). Romanen blev af The New York Times placeret på avisens top 5 over de bedste bøger fra 2010 og henviste i opløbet til Pulitzerprisuddelingen i 2011 bl.a. Jonathan Franzen til en sekundær placering. avisen, the irish independent, kaldte A Visit From The Goon Squad ”en forrygende roman; tænksom, subtil, sjov, skør, energisk, dybt autentisk.” Jennifer egan har tidligere skrevet romanen The Invisible Circus, som i 2001 blev filmatiseret med Cameron Diaz i en bærende hovedrolle, Emerald City and Other Stories, Look at Me, der blev nomineret til en national Book award, og bestselleren The Keep. hun har skrevet noveller til magasiner som The New Yorker, Harpers, Granta og McSweeney’s. Hendes journalistiske signatur ses jævnligt i the new York times magazine.
