The ProCombi steam oven from AEG has three steam cooking functions. The 100 percent steam setting is a controlled alternative to boiling for vegetables, rice, potatoes and pasta. The 50 percent steam, 50 percent hot air setting is good for flans, terrines, puddings and casseroles and for re-heating while 25 percent steam is good for large joints of meat, bread, gratins and casseroles. The water refill panel is accessed from the front so it is easy to use. The oven has an A10 percent energy rating. 08445 611611 www.aeg.co.uk

what do cooks really want? I

f you watch Masterchef et al, you’ll have seen a lot of chefs immersing vac packed bags of food in tanks of simmering water. This technique, which is called sous vide, is all the thing at the moment. KitchenAid and Baumatic have both ventured into the market – and we spotted a sous vide machine from an obscure brand at Living Kitchen in Germany – but to date it is far from mainstream and we think it will be a long time before this feature joins the ever growing list of functions available in more sophisticated ovens. Larger cavities that can be divided are a clear trend in the oven market. Many companies have introduced the larger cavity to allow cooking on five shelf positions. One of the largest is the 76 litre CulinArt from Miele while AEG has opted for 74 litres with its MaxiKlasse. Bill Miller of ATAG believes that over the next few years more consumers will opt for a single multifunction oven and believes that capacity will become larger and more flexible: "It is likely that we will see an increase in the number of functions available on single ovens with pre-programmed recipes and features such as steam combined with microwave and fan cooking to give reduced cooking times without sacrificing quality." Hoover’s 74 litre Prodige can be split into two flexi cooking zones each with independent temperature control so it is possible to roast a Sunday joint and batch bake cup cakes at the same time. Hotpoint has also gone for the split option with the LUCE Openspace where the 70 litre cavity can be split into large and small cooking zones. Steam ovens have been much talked about – but the best success level is in multifunction ovens with a steam feature. Neff’s AquaAssist works in conjunction with seven cooking functions to produce improved cooking results. It is easy to use and easy to understand and is available on a selection of products including two with the SlideAway door. Steam is a healthy way to cook as it conserves flavour, shape and colour. Pre-programming has become an increasingly popular feature where basically all the cook has to do is put the dish in the oven, press the right button and wait for the results. CDA’s award winning SV310 does it with one touch picture icons – a first for the UK. DeDietrich offers ICS and there are several other pre programmed options from other manufacturers. Getting consumers to believe that it works and convincing them that they need it is the key to sales. In general, these systems do work and are particularly good for inexperienced cooks.

What the average cook wants from an oven is hard to fathom. If you believe tv cookery shows, life is unsupportable without sous vide or steam. The real question is, how much is enough – and does too much have the effect of putting consumers off rather than encouraging them to buy?

Whirlpool offers a selection of advanced features on ovens including Ready2Cook, a powerful convection system that eliminates the need for pre-heating and can save up to 20 percent of energy. There’s also 6th Sense Intelligent Technology where sensors work out the weight and adapt cooking times and temperature to suit. Maxi cooking controls and balances top and bottom elements so that the oven heats up slowly – perfect for large joints or the festive turkey. The company says that there is something to suit everyone in its comprehensive range of Fusion built in multifunction ovens. 0208 649 5000 www.whirlpool.co.uk

DIVIDE AND RULE Multi function ovens that can be divided into two cavities are the latest idea and appeal to consumers who would like two ovens but don’t have the space for a double.

“Every oven in the De Dietrich collection is multifunction, and all single and double ovens feature fan cooking as standard,” says Richard Walker of De Dietrich. “At the peak of multifunction oven technology, the top of the range De Dietrich DOP895 (in black or stainless steel) features the widest range of cooking modes available. These include Intelligent Control System (ICS) with 16 total automatic cooking programmes; Cooking Guide with 44 pre-set recipes - where the user just inputs the weight of the food; Low Temperature Cooking with 10 pre-sets for slow cooking and roasting and Expert which features 12 oven functions including Pyroclean Plus. This oven also sets itself apart in design terms by featuring an electronic tilting control panel for easy viewing.” 01256 308067 www.dedietrich.co.uk

ATAG was one of the first companies to offer a single oven that can be split into two cavities. Both oven compartments are multi function with their own fan systems, lighting and controls. If someone wants to cook a low temperature meringue and a high temperature dish such as Yorkshire Pudding at the same time, there is no problem – and no need for a double oven, which is a boon where space is short. ATAG also offers the QuiliMax multifunction combi steam oven, which has a large selection of functions. 0208 247 3993 www.atag.co.uk

Packed with cooking functions, this sophisticated SV470 45cm deep oven from CDA includes pyroclean - simply the easiest and best way to clean any oven interior. When pyro is selected, the oven door locks and the cavity heats up to 500oC for a selected time (depending on how dirty the oven is). This process reduces grease and burnt on spills to a fine ash that can simply be wiped away. The quadruple glazed door stays safe to touch during this process. The SV470 has three pyro levels to suit everything from light to heavy soiling. Other functions include conventional heat, defrost, fan assisted cooking, fan oven, fan with lower heat, fan with grill, grill and half grill. There’s also an easy to use auto cook system with 15 presets for cooking at the touch of a button. The oven has a 36 litre capacity, is A rated and is finished in stainless steel and black glass. 01949 862 010 www.cda.eu

The 76 litre cavity on the Hoover Prodige oven can be split into two cooking zones using an easy to insert divider. The two zones have separate temperature control and feature Hoover Pro cooking technology which distributes heat evenly throughout the cavity. 0151 334 2781 www.hoover.co.uk

AquaAssist from Neff brings together the famous Circotherm system and steam cooking. AquaAssist is designed to work with seven standard cooking functions to increase humidity and produce better results. It uses a two stage pump system, which is exclusive to Neff, and water comes from an accessible 500ml tank. The new SlideAway door ovens with AquaAssist have a 67 litre capacity and multiple shelf positions. 0844 892 9033 www.neff.co.uk

The Hotpoint LUCE range is aimed at the premium end of the market and includes a range of ovens. Dual Flow technology is at the heart of the multifunction system and distributes heat evenly throughout the oven. LUCE Openspace ovens have a 70 litre cavity that can be split by a divider into two independent cooking zones. LUCE ovens have 13 cooking functions and pyroclean is available on the OSX103NDPX. 08000 921 922 www.hotpoint.co.uk

what do cooks really want? The iQ700 pyroKlean single oven sits right at the top of the Siemens range. It has 13 functions, 3D hot air cooking, defrosting, a full width grill, hot air grilling, intensive hot air, conventional heat, bottom heat, intensive conventional heat, hydroBaking, keep warm, low temperature setting and more. 0844 892 9040 www.siemens-home.co.uk

WHAT IS SOUS VIDE? Invented by Michelin starred chef Pierre Troisgrois as a way to prevent premium priced foie gras from shedding too much weight during cooking, sous vide is a clever idea that conserves flavour and moisture. Food is vac sealed in a heavyweight plastic pouch then immersed in a bath of barely simmering water for long, slow cooking – which can be up to 72 hours. Various appliance manufacturers have had a go at built in sous vide - KitchenAid combines a vac packer with a steam oven while Baumatic offers a machine that vac packs the food but does not cook it. The interesting news for this market that may well put off any future developments is that Heston Blumenthal is launching a sous vide machine with small appliance specialists Salter. Due for launch in 2012 the machine is likely to sell at around £200 – and, with Heston’s name attached, will have a lot of publicity.

Hotpoint Aqualtis washing machines have been redesigned and now have an insulated Hydro Thermal Tech tub surrounding the titanium alloy drum. This maintains a constant temperature, helping to deliver better wash results. An Allergy UK approved anti allergy programme, 11kg load capacity and an A+++ rating make this machine a good family choice. The machine is shown here with the matching Aqualtis 9kg condenser dryer. 08000 921 922 www.hotpoint.co.uk

It’s my favourite ...

Hoover’s Dynamic A+++ 10kg machine is a star performer packed with features. It will take a 10kg load - cutting down on the number of loads needed. The KG Mode sensor weighs the laundry and adjusts the cycle time, which saves energy and water. Special programmes include a fast 14 minute wash, an intensive steam wash at low temperature and a steam function to remove creases. The impressive top spin speed on the Cottons programme cuts down on tumble drying time. “I actually own one of these – a recent replacement for my old Hoover machine which gave me ten years of trusty service,” says Editor Jan Orchard. “It is very quiet, easy to use and really efficient. It is not the cheapest machine on the market but a really good buy for anyone who does a lot of laundry.” 0151 334 2781 www.hoover.co.uk 12 • KITCHEN JOURNAL FEBRUARY 2012

wishy washy Low energy and water use, quick programmes and capacity are key selling points for washing machines.

The freestanding laundry range from Neff includes a washing machine, a condenser dryer and a washer dryer. The V7446 washer dryer dries without water, using air condensation technology. It will wash 7kg and dry 4kg. The washing machine will wash 7kg and features the Vario Perfect system which lets the user decide whether speed or energy saving is most important. The condenser dryer has an extra large 8kg drum and a steam function to reduce ironing. 0844 892 9033 www.neff.co.uk

The L98699FL ProTex PLUS washing machine from AEG protects clothing from damage thanks to its gentle wash action. The specially designed drum provides enough room for clothes to move around in the water while Advanced Washing Technology quickly wets fabrics and prevents over concentration of detergent at the start of the wash. A built in weight sensor means that just the right amount of water, detergent and energy is used. The machine will wash 9kg and has an A+++20 percent energy rating, 08445 611611 www.aeg.co.uk

Whirlpool’s WWCR 9230 6th Sense washing machine protects colours from fading thanks to a special Colours 15oC option and Wave Motion technology. This is an asymmetrical drum movement that maximises the effectiveness of detergent and distributes the load evenly. It provides effective stain removal at 15oC – a low temperature that protects colours. The system works with the 6th Sense Colours programmes for Dark, Light and Mixed colours. The machine has 14 programmes and is A+++ rated. 0208 649 5000 www.whirlpool.co.uk

DRYING Tumble drying clothes is an expensive option, which makes the emergence of machines rated A and above good news. The downside is price as most retail at over £400. Most machines now are condenser dryers which allows for a better energy rating than the old hot air vented models. All have a removable water tank so it is not necessary to plumb the machine into the drain outlet. Larger capacity washing machines means that there is a need for larger capacity dryers so 7 and 8kg models have started to appear. Fast and efficient, a gas vented tumble dryer is the best value of all – Crosslee are the specialists in this.

The 8kg Supertronic W5000WPS washing machine from Miele has an A+++ energy rating and includes an Express 20 minute cycle plus 22 pre programmed stain cycles to remove stubborn marks such as grass, red wine, coffee and make up. All Miele machines are rigorously tested before leaving the factory. A silk stocking is used to test the drum on the W5000 – if it snags the machine does not leave the factory. The machine has a ten year warranty that includes parts and labour. 0845 365 6614 www.miele.co.uk

Energy saving is the hot trend in laundry, say Siemens. Consumers prefer A+++ rated washing machines and are looking for A rated dryers that use heat pump technology. Siemens will be developing a full range of A rated dryers in 2012 featuring their unique self cleaning heat exchanger which maintains the energy rating throughout the life of the machine. The 1Q700 I-Dos washing machine shown here is a Which? Best buy and has an A+++ energy rating. It features self dosing for detergent and also calculates the perfect wash sequence and temperature. It also has varioPerfect where the user can select either a speed or an energy efficient option, and autoStain removal which removes stains without the need for a pre wash or stain removal treatments. 0844 892 9040 www.siemens-home.co.uk

Detergent drawers can become black and gungy after a while - a problem solved by Haier with the development of specially treated seals and detergent drawers that prevent the growth of bacteria. Appliances with Haier’s ABT have a blue seal and powder drawer. The HW80 B1486 F features this system and also has an induction motor to reduce operating noise and energy use. The machine has an A+++ rating and an Automatic Variable Capacity function that adapts the wash cycle to suit the load. The machine has 11 pre set programmes and a Memo function for individual settings. It will take an 8kg load. 020 8166 4978 www.haier.com

Beko’s new Excellence 8kg Dry and Save condenser tumble dryer has an A+++ energy rating. It is powered by heat exchange technology and has sensors to recognise when clothes are dry. The integrated water tank is located at the top of the machine to make emptying easier and the filter is below the door. There is also an option to connect the machine to the drain for direct water discharge. 0845 600 4911 www.beko.co.uk

Bosch has redesigned the EcoLogixx 7 dryer, which now has a smart glass door. It also has a generous 7kg capacity, a self cleaning heat exchanger and 15 sensor programmes. Heat pump technology delivers an A-40 percent energy rating (40 percent better than an A rating). The machine has three drying levels, times programmes, LCD display, an interior drum light (no more lost socks) and special features such as Freshen UP, Wool Finish, Super Quick 40 and a Mix programme. 0844 892 8979 www.bosch-home.co.uk

tility rooms have become increasingly popular as consumers like the idea of keeping the laundry away from the kitchen. In Europe it is even possible to buy special laundry room furniture from major kitchen manufacturers. All that is needed really is space for the machines, a large sink for hand washing, a cupboard for the ironing board and iron, shelves for clean laundry waiting for ironing and somewhere to store cleaning materials – something that can be achieved using most kitchen furniture ranges and storage fittings.

rian Evans was one of the pioneers in bringing German kitchens to the UK. He introduced Nolte - a market leader in design that offered style and sophistication - to the British market. Today, Mark David is a strong, family success story, still offering retailers a fabulous product backed by strong support with Brian himself as Chairman, son Mark as Managing Director and daughter Claire as Operations Director. “The company has come a long way since I brought Nolte German kitchen design to the UK 30 years ago,” says Brian. “Back then Nolte was a fairly simple range, unlike today’s innovative, design led approach. In 2012, Nolte offers a winning combination of the best in quality and worldwide kitchen design to the UK market.“ Last year saw the exciting expansion of Mark David’s product base with two more German brands and a British brand joining Nolte. Compact, competitively priced Brion and innovative Beeck are the German brands while the high demand for British bespoke design is met with handcrafted Yesteryear. The pinnacle of the new ranges is Beeck, which features an enormous selection of surface finishes and colours. The beauty of Yesteryear is its versatility, quality and craftsmanship. Yesteryear combines the ergonomic design associated with contemporary styling with craftsman woodworking skills to produce kitchens evocative of a bygone era. The range is available in a number of different woods and painted finishes. Quality details such as dovetail joint solid oak drawer boxes and butt hinges are standard. Also available are finishing touches such as framed or curved door fronts, castellated designs and ornate columns. Customers looking for a competitively priced German range will appreciate Brion. Planning is easy with Brion as many different design possibilities can be created using a small number of elements. Finishes include gloss, modern wood decors and top quality veneers. Moving with the times is key for Mark David. The company has recently opened a completely refurbished showroom at the head office in Sawbridgeworth, a national consumer advertising campaign and a network of national distributors renowned for their commitment to customer service. There’s also a brand new website. “Our desire to distribute cutting edge kitchens in the UK is now fully reflected through all our routes to market,” says Operations Director, Claire Ramsbotham. “Our new website has a membership portal for all our customers so communications channels are free flowing and we have welcomed the use of all the social media tools available to us. It has been a learning curve but our aim is to lead the way, not to follow. Look out for further developments.” 01279 868500, www.markdavid.co.uk

The glass doors are available in a satin opaque glass finish or in high gloss Lava Black, Polaris White, Magnolia and Stone Grey. The doors are tempered glass apart from those above appliances where a clever silver foil prevents over heating and improves ventilation. The doors are finished with a metal edge. The range is available both with handles and in a handleless version in next line. The innovative wall hung kitchen system is combined with an island unit, made from a sliver thin natural grey ash workbench fitted with a 13mm ceramic top. Base units appear to float and also cleverly conceal all cables. The NX902 features the Primus push/pull system and LED Swing lighting where light can be directed where needed.

Right: Gala will be shown in Truffle Brown high gloss combined with a new Champagne high gloss door front. Gala, which is also available with curved doors and in a handleless version, demonstrates the trend for earthy, natural shades combined with an excellent finish and cleverly designed interior storage systems.

Left: Nova is a new range for Schüller and was previewed at the Kitchen Mile trade event in Germany. Nova in high gloss brings a top quality finish into Schüller’s most affordable ranges. “We believe that Nova in high gloss will be a winner in 2012,” says Wayne Dance. “Previously high gloss finishes have been the preserve of upmarket kitchens. With Nova, retailers can provide a quality finish to customers, whatever their budget.”

Right: New Castell in knotty oak comes in either a natural or a white washed finish. The door is a solid frame with veneered inlay. A real innovation is that Schüller provides fronts, plinths and side panels in the same finish plus matching carcases – all at a mid market price. Castell will be shown with the popular Murano range in magnolia high gloss. The Murano front is acrylic but looks like glass, an effect achieved through a special edge angle that uses the colour of the door front combined with a stainless steel band to reflect the light.

uality, style and unbeatable pricing were the hallmarks of the Ram Kitchens brand. Back in the 80s, Ram was one of the big names and PJH was a major distributor. The company has now decided to revive the Ram brand to complement its mid-market K Kitchens offering with an entry price plus collection that gives retail, merchant and contract customers a choice of furniture solutions to meet a wide range of styles, budgets and specification requirements. The new brand has no connection with the old Spring Ram Group. PJH owns the Ram name but has changed the logo style to a more modern look. The range will be supplied exclusively by the PJH Group on a 48 hour delivery basis and is available to order now. Just like Ram of yesteryear, the collection includes both contemporary and traditional designs and certainly offers a golden opportunity to entice customers with more dash than cash – an important factor at a time when every penny counts. “We are re-acquainting and reminding customers of the many qualities of the Ram brand from its 'Made in GB' robust and durable manufacture to its highly competitive pricing and on trend styling,” says Amada Watson, Kitchen Product Manager at the PJH Group. “These qualities combined with PJH’s market leading distribution and customer service standards will make the Ram Collection popular with stockists and consumers alike.” There are 16 ranges in the collection, complemented by a large choice of accessories, handles, worktops, sinks and appliances. In line with Ram’s heritage the ranges are all named after well known Yorkshire locations such as Ripon, Ingleton, Millington and more.

Moores have found that customers are choosing colours that won’t go out of fashion, making a shift from brights to neutral tones such as cream and Mussel. Texture is becoming more important too with the emergence of glass and horizontal designs. Based on these emerging trends, Moores has introduced several new designs and finishes to the Four Seasons range. All the new additions can be seen on the website. 01937 862557 www.moores.co.uk

Although neutrals are popular, vibrant colours are always an eye catcher on display. High gloss Azurro and high gloss Rosso from Nolte are available with Trend Lack, a competitively priced lacquer front. The edge is applied separately using a laser welding technique, which gives a seamless finish. Shown here is high gloss Azzurro combined with high gloss White in a kitchen featuring SOFTform design elements with rounded edges. Matching handles mirror the curves. 07557 922044 www.nolte-kitchens.com

finishing touches Worktops, sinks and splashbacks can be used to add a dash of complementary, or contrasting colour. White and cream tones are the top trend in solid surfacing says Andy Stone, Commercial Director. “There is a strong demand from designers for pale neutrals enhanced with opaque and pearlescent chips that give solid surfacing the appearance of real stone,” he says. Helsinki and Oslo are recent additions to the Hanex range of solid surface finishes which have the look of natural stone while being warm to the touch and easy to handle. The Hanex range includes 100 finishes ranging from plain colours to sparkling and natural stone and translucent finishes. The product comes in sheet sizes 12 by 3680 by 760mm on all decors and 6 by 2490 by 760mm on specialist ranges. 0845 603 7811 www.hanex.co.uk

The curved components can be used to make an island or a breakfast bar with minimum fuss. 01933 232 272 www.bushboard.co.uk

ade in pewter, Lamont from Häfele is an understated classic collection that includes cabinet handles and door and window fittings – creating an opportunity for complete coordination. The handles are made for Häfele in the UK. Pewter was chosen as the material for the company’s debut range of branded hardware because the metal, which is an alloy of tin, copper, antimony, bismuth and lead has an attractive soft silver colour and patina that works well with wood or painted doors. The material does not rust so there is no need for it to be lacquered or

plated which adds to the attractive, natural appeal of the Lamont collection. Lamont is a square design softened by gentle curves and rings. The collection includes spring lever handles on a square rose lever plate with a latch, standard keyway and bathroom privacy handles, a handed window fitting to be used with Häfele espagnette bolts and a selection of cabinet handles which include knobs, D shapes, cups and tubular pulls, all with fixings.
