Your Real Estate Detectives! (910) 798-1060 From the Trenches…Real Estate. Is it gettin’ any better? If I were disciplined enough to put a dollar in the cookie jar, every time I heard that question, I’d have sufficient money saved for a tummy tuck by Christmas. Now that you’ve presumed I’m a real (estate?) smart aleck, I s’pose you’d like the answer. The answer is: Yes. Not a bolded ‘Yes,’ or one with an exclamation point behind it, like “Yes!” Nevertheless—a yes. Period. The phones are beginning to ring. I know this from personal experience, but also by reviewing my office’s front desk activity log. At the end of each shift, the Agent on duty records calls and walk-ins, not by name, but by number. The results remain in plain sight, to provide us with a feel for the market. In the seemingly never ending past, Agents did a lot of thumb twiddling on duty time. There were days when our office ‘activity’ boiled down to discovering how many ways there were to log a zero. After all, there’s a plain zero, then one with a diagonal line through it. OR you could put quotation marks around your zero, or… Never mind. The blessed callers are asking questions about properties. Questions are good! Questions show interest. “What kinds of things are they asking about?” They’re asking about-inexpensive homes. Not lots. Not places on waterfront. Nothing within walking distance of any downtown area Nothing in excess of 1,200 square feet. And here’s the kicker… Something for $150,000 or less. If you own and want to liquidate anything that falls into that category (by today’s pricing standards), by all means, call your family REALTOR! Do not pass go; do not collect $200.

Collect the whole banana at the closing table. It will sell. Mortgage companies are getting friendlier. Not the Mortgage Loan Officers themselves. They’re a FINE group of people, suffering the same ills as REALTORS. I mean the policy makers. Some lenders have resumed granting loans on second homes with only 10% down. A person NOT intimately involved in the business may consider that everyday fare. It’s not. At one time, some banks required as much as 30% down on nonprimary residences, and until recently the only ‘norm’ was 25%. While we’re on the subject of second homes, condominiums and low-maintenance townhomes have gained popularity. People are busy. They work long hours to retain their certainly precious J-O-B’s. They don’t want another responsibility, a headache. They want to spend every shred of free time having fun. They want a place where they can shut the door behind them when they leave, and be assured it’ll look exactly the same when they return. Some buyer hopefuls have indigestion over the monthly fees for a managed property. But once they realize that the Homeowners’ Association pays for wind and hail insurance (vis-à-vis ‘hurricane’), liability, maintaining the community pool, mowing the lawn and feeding the rhododendrons, they begin to look at it differently. I can say, with confidence, for myself and my fellow REALTORS -- we want this trend to continue. We recognize and we’re grateful for even the smallest, positive indicator. We want our industry to make its way out of the bread line and into the bank line. Is it gettin’ any better? Yes. It’s the fitful question, looming on everyone’s lips. And speaking of lips… perhaps I should reconsider how I’ll spend my yet un-earned Christmas dollars. Perhaps I’ll forget the tummy tuck, and settle for a little Botox on the puckerer!

Dr. Jeffrey Coury A conversation with the specialist and family man.

D

r. Coury is adept at balancing his professional and personal lives. “Family is the most important part of my life, and being a physician is my passion,”

says Dr. Jeff Coury, 36-year-old physician and partner of Coastal Carolina Ear, Nose & Throat. A Renaissance man of sorts, Coury while in his residency was published twice in the Ear, Nose and Throat Journal. He was born and raised in Scranton, Pa., active in sports while achieving in the top 10% of his high school class. Dr. Coury entered residency training in the competitive field of Head & Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery, a five year program where he rotated through various fields of Ear, Nose and Throat and Plastic Surgery. His pediatric training was at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. Dr. Coury also had the opportunity to be mentored by world-renowned physicians such as Robert Staloff, M.D.

Prior to his residency completion, Dr. Coury trained in the relatively new-at-that-time breakthrough surgical procedure of balloon sinuplasty, a minimally invasive technique which involves the passage of a small balloon into the drainage pathway of the sinuses to improve their function. He also served as chief resident of his program in Philadelphia and resident liaison of the American Academy in Otolaryngology. Upon completion of his residency, Dr.Coury relocated to the pleasant climate of southeastern North Carolina and joined the well-established practice of Coastal Carolina Ear, Nose & Throat. Coastal Carolina ENT is mainly based in Whiteville, North Carolina with a smaller satellite office in Shallotte. The practice offers comprehensive ear, nose, throat and plastic surgery care serving both Columbus Regional Healthcare System and Brunswick Novant Medical Center. Classic Promotions & More 15

During his third year in a thriving practice, Dr. Coury and his partners relocated their Sunset Beach practice to a new, larger office in Shallotte, NC, centered closer to the newly opened state-of-the-art Brunswick Novant Medical Center. Dr. Coury’s specialty includes sinus disorders and he is proud to have applied the technology of balloon sinuplasty at Brunswick Hospital since 2010. This minimally invasive technique involves the passage of a small balloon into the drainage pathway of the sinuses to improve their function. It is far less traumatic to the surrounding tissue and causes less pain and bleeding as compared with traditional sinus surgery. More recently he became one of the very few Otolaryngologists to offer “in-office” balloon sinuplasty to select candidates, and is the first ear, nose, and throat surgeon on the east coast of North Carolina to use in-office balloon technology. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia without the need for general anesthesia. Typically the procedure takes less than an hour and patients use minimal, if any, post-operative pain medication.

Two weeks prior to moving to NC, the Courys welcomed a new edition to their family -- his wife Caryn gave birth to a beautiful redhead girl, Alyssa. Dr. Coury’s personal life grew again recently, as well, he and his wife welcomed another daughter, Kamryn, to their family in September 2009. He currently resides in Whiteville, NC, where his interests include fishing, hunting, golf, physical fitness, as well as spending time with his family and unwinding at one of the many beautiful Carolina beaches.

Bloomingails Consignment

9990 Beach Drive, Calabash, NC 28467

Bloomingails Consignment – voted “Best Consignment Shop in Brunswick County” 5 years in a row. People have often asked me how did we accomplish this honor, in other words, what makes us the best? Well, it all started with Christmas Trees. That's right, Christmas Trees. Many years ago I was a divorced mother of 3 with no child support, struggling to make ends meet. At Christmas time, I would ride by the Christmas tree lots where their prices were way over my budget, and I could never afford to buy one of those beautiful trees. After Christmas when I rode by the same lots, there were still so many trees left unsold. I often thought if these were my trees, I would sell each one for $5, therefore selling all the trees and then everyone could have a beautiful tree. After working part-time in a consignment shop in North Myrtle Beach, I decided to open my own shop here in Brunswick County, using that same concept I had about Christmas trees. I pride myself on having the best merchandise, pricing it where everyone can afford to shop here. Today, there are still many women in the same situation as I was back then, unable to pay the bills and take care of the children and have anything left over for themselves. Women everywhere

want to feel good about themselves. Sometimes all it takes is a new dress, a pair of shoes or even a different pair of earrings. My goal is to offer my customers an opportunity to shop in a nice store where they can find neat, clean and in-style merchandise at a price that's more than reasonable... a place where every woman can afford nice things. Bloomingails has been in business in this area for 14 years. I started out in a very small shop with only a few consignors, mostly my friends and neighbors. Today we occupy a 8,500 sq. ft. building in Calabash with over 4,000 consignors. We take 10 appointments each day allowing the consignor to bring 25 items of clothing (clean, pressed and on hangers) and 25 other items such as shoes, pocketbooks, housewares, home decor, etc. So, if you shop at Bloomingails today and don't find anything you like, come back tomorrow, there will be approximately 500 new items in the store, there is always something new everyday. We are now open 7 days a week, Mon-Sat 10-5 and on Sundays 12-4pm. If you have never consigned with us before, stop by and pick up an Information Sheet that tells how it all works, make an appointment, and turn those unwanted items into CASH!

Tyranny of the Screens By Grant Turner

Last Fall during a golf date with my friend Mitzi, we ran into Andy Rooney on the 19th hole of a local country club. Of course I recognized him from his decades on “60 Minutes”. He's not as young as he looks on TV. After I fetched napkins and helped him sop-up a beer knocked over by his left eyebrow, Mr. Rooney and I started talking. Meanwhile, Mitzi sat at the table with us and checked her messages. During the brief encounter with Andy Rooney, he glanced over at Mitzi and said to me quietly: “I have this idea. More of an insight, really. It's about screens. They're not taking over. The have taken over. And I just don't see how they can be resisted. There is little hope. We love our screens. They come in any size. And they usually have something irresistible for us to see. Must see, many times, in order to function in society. Screens have a way of taking charge.” He had me spellbound, this sage of the screen. He may have looked older than he did on TV but he sounded the same. I like to think I was fully appreciating every moment. Mitzi, sitting next to me, wanted to listen and give her full attention to this man that I was acting so impressed by, but she just couldn't. The techno-gods had made it impossible for her to choose actual human contact over the type of secondary human contact available through a screen. Rooney continued: “ I see people now in public places fiddling incessantly with their screens. The whole world seems preoccupied with them. We can't look away from all the screens. They're everywhere. I don't like that.” “They are so addictive,” I added. Yes, Rooney nodded. “You know what? You know what I think it is?” I heard myself say. “Screens are the new cigarettes.” “You're right.” Rooney said, after a pause, looking astonished. “That's it. When smoking was outlawed, the screens moved in, didn't they?” He also told me about his hip, something about his urine flow, then the humous sage of the TV tube was whisked away from us. I liked Andy Rooney. The next Sunday I started watching “60 Minutes” again to see if he Rooney used my idea. Nothing yet. Since then we've seen Egyptians take to the streets in full revolt and overthrow their government. A sudden mass uprising they say was driven by the internet and social media—the screens. Even cigarettes can't do that. By the way, Mitzi and I have stopped dating until she returns my calls. After pressuring her into putting down her iPhone and being less distracted, she wrecked her car and blamed me. Mitzi actually said, “I'm not used to driving without being distracted!” Grant Turner is a professional stand-up comedian. He appears as Ricky Mokel in One The Show, at the Alabama Theatre in North Myrtle Beach, SC. For family friendly comedy DVDs and tapes go to: www. rickymokel.com. The Big Band Sound by Karen Joseph

Classic Promotions & More 29

It’s uniquely American. It’s a sound like no other. It’s been around since the 1920’s and has survived Elvis, Cher, and Lady GaGa.

It’s the Big Band Sound and thanks to the Brunswick Big Band, it is alive, well, and thriving in Brunswick County. Begun in 2005 as an arm of the Brunswick Concert Band, the Brunswick Big Band’s reputation has made it one of the most sought after bands in the area. Made up of seventeen musicians and a “girl singer,” all agree that they love the music and sharing it with audiences. Self-taught keyboard player Ron Veenker, who joined the band in 2008 and grew up listening to the Dorsey and Les Brown bands, dreamed of playing with a big band. “We enjoy our rehearsals as much as we enjoy playing before audiences. There’s just something very special about this music.” A founding member of both the concert and big bands, bass player Ellen Dorsett is a classically trained musician who began playing violin at age 10. “My Classic Promotions & More 30

father had a dance band and I grew up hearing big band music. It’s always been one my favorite types of music and having the chance to share that sound with an audience and other musicians is a dream come true.” Trumpet player Frank Mahoney performed with ten different big bands before becoming Big Band Director in 2006. “When my wife and I moved to Brunswick County I was excited to learn that there was a big band in the area. As Director I love the fact that we can increase an awareness of the special sound of this uniquely American music. We’re a community band and believe it’s important to give back so our performances are free to the public and we rely on donations to expand our music library. We play in venues across Brunswick County and over the years our audiences have continued to grow.” The big band formula really defines the sound. Made up of four trumpets, five saxophones, one piano, four trombones, one string bass, one percussionist, one guitar, and a singer, many of the Brunswick Big Band players come from classical backgrounds. Known in the vernacular as the “girl singer,” Linda Ladrick began singing at age 5 and spent more than 20 years concentrating on classical music. “The closest I came to even hearing big band music was during my teen years when I performed at the Jones Beach Theatre with the Guy Lombardo Band. Then I was lucky enough to get a role in the Brunswick Little Theatre production of 1940’s Radio Hour and Frank Mahoney asked me to sing with the Big Band. There is something very special about this music and I love singing the songs – especially the torch songs! I don’t think people realize the incredible talent and experience of many of the musicians in the Brunswick Big Band but I know audiences are always impressed, smiling, and singing along during our performances.” Perhaps the most surprising member of the Band is guitarist Tyler Piette, a junior at South Brunswick High School. Tyler began his musical career in the 4th grade playing alto sax and then was drawn to the guitar. “I enjoy playing with the Big Band and being surrounded by great musicians. I’ve learned so much about music theory from them. They really understand what music should be.” Piette hopes to continue studying music at the University of Rochester’s Eastman Classic Promotions & More 31

School of Music, but also plans a minor in business. As part of their commitment to community, the Bands Music Students Assistance Program offers scholarships to uniquely talented young people so they can get additional musical training. In addition the program also provides instruments to students who may not be able to afford to purchase their own. The Brunswick Concert Band and Big Band are devoted to bringing their music to the community. The Concert Band performs three free concerts each year, one in the spring, one in the summer, and one during the Christmas Holidays. The Big Band’s upcoming performances include playing at a Dosher Memorial Hospital fund-raiser in September and their return to Sunset Beach to perform at Sunset at Sunset on Saturday, October 1st. The two bands will perform a special Holiday Concert on December 2nd at Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach and again on December 4th at Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information and the Bands’ schedules check their website, www. brunswickbands.com.
