The newest International entry into Super Boat racing is Tor Staubo from Oslo, Norway. He comes to Key West for the 31st Annual World Championships in a new Ferrari red 48’ MTI with big power. We asked him what his goal is for Key West. “First, to just make it to Key West and second, I can not say,” exclaims a very excited Staubo. With the big goose down the side of his boat... Staubo talks about how he got the name. “The international translation of GASSE means GOOSE IT.” So, I guess Tor will be telling veteran throttleman Johnny Tomlinson more times than not... Gasse, Gasse, Gasse... JOHNNY!

This year is very important to us. We have gathered a great team from around the U.S. to compete and we are going to compete in Clearwater and ultimately we are headed to Key West for the World Championships. We are mentally prepared... our equipment is ready and we just want to put on a great show and put ourselves in position to win a world title. It will be a great week in Key West. “Watch Your Back”... Doc Janssen’s expertise, a complex spinal surgery expert. Also, just having a little fun with the other teams... if by chance a competitor is ahead of him... you better WATCH YOUR BACK!

Everyone loves coming to Key West. This year we have a lot of international teams competing, so it’s going to be another great year. Fans that are on the Outer Mole can watch boats coming into the harbor at 140-160 mph... if they can’t see them, or hear them... they can for sure feel the spray off the boats. This was a great year. Next year will be even better! 17

Recently winning in New York and paying tribute to the fallen from 9/11 was a very special experience. It was my first time to New York and visiting Ground Zero was a very overwhelming experience. To race on Sunday and come away with a win... just made the whole weekend one I will never forget. Super Cat racing is a very competitive class and anyone can win on any given day. You have to make sure your setup is just right... we want to win this year’s event bad. It’s Skater vs MTI... let the best team win.

It’s a great feeling to be a part of Super Boat racing again and to be around all these teams and boats. I’ve had some challenges the last couple years and I’ve been fortunate to start a new business RF Marine Group. I’ve built over a Billion dollars worth of boats over my lifetime and, now with my new business, we can service some of that equipment and build new boats for some of those great clients. The most important thing during race week... is setup. If you get the setup right and you’re there racing on the last day, you have a great chance of becoming a World Champion. 30

Miami’s metro area is the seventh most populous in the United States, with an estimated population of 5,547,051. The Port of Miami is known as the “Cruise Capital of the World”. Don Aronow was a builder and racer of the Magnum Marine, Cigarette, Donzi, and Formula speed boats. Cigarette Boats were popularized by the TV Show Miami Vice and their use by cocaine runners. Miami Beach, particularly Ocean Drive is part of what is now the Art Deco District. Topless sunbathing is legal on certain designated areas of Miami Beach. Miami is home to the National Hurricane Center. Star Island is an artificial island in Biscayne Bay, completed in 1922 with 35 home sites. 35

Miss GEICO Racing team has been very fortunate to win World Titles and this one is just as important as the last. The Key West World Championship event is the granddaddy of offshore racing. Here, we are racing at the same place as TV/movie celebrities such as Chuck Norris, Don Johnson and offshore racer and Miami entrepreneur, Rocky Aoki. The whole team works all year long to win the Key West World title crown so winning here is always the ultimate. The Miss GEICO Offshore race team has many faithful fans who come here each year to cheer us on and we are eager to see them again. This year should be one of the best years of powerboat racing in Key West.

We look forward to Key West the day after we leave Key West... so you can tell, we really like it down there. Last year we missed winning the World Championship by one point. We got hit in turn two, but still went on to win that day so it was bittersweet. This year we have fresh motors, the boat is ready and we’re ready. Anything can happen in Key West, so you have three days to race and change things on the off days. We really want to win in Key West this year. We have over 40 people coming to support us so it’s going to be a great week.

Sarasota is home to Siesta Key Beach, voted #1 Beach in the USA in 2011. The exact origin of the name “Sarasota” is unknown, but the name first appears in print as “Zarazote” on a land grant map of 1763. John Ringling, of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus fame, moved the circus’ winter quarters to the city in 1927. The Museum of the Circus is home to the World’s largest circus miniature. The U.S.S. Sarasota was named after the County of Sarasota and served in the southwest Pacific during World War ll. Over 12,600 room nights are sold for area hotels during Super Boat Race Weekend. Myakka River State Park’s Canopy Walkway is one of only about a dozen in the world. 43

On clear days, it is possible to see the Chicago skyline across Lake Michigan. Michigan City is the home of the Old Michigan City Light, one of Indiana’s few lighthouses. The Indiana Dunes National Park system adjoins Michigan City’s Mt. Baldy, one of North America’s last living sand dunes. Airplane pilots refer to Michigan City as “The City of the Lighted Cross” because Franklin and Michigan Streets form the appearance of a lighted cross when viewed from the sky. Michigan City is the hometown of Mike LaRocco, a professional Supercross and Motocross racer. Michigan City was a hangout for Al Capone. Treasure lore says that his gang buried 3,000 cases of Whiskey nearby, which have never been found. Michigan City’s shore is lined with “singing sand” that makes a squeaking noise as one walks across it because of the high quartz content. 49

My first year to Key West was 1984 and my first year racing was 1986. I’ve won the world title over a dozen times and Key West is the best place to win. I’ve been and won with different teams and I hope to win with our new team Gasse. Some of my titles have been with Drambuie on Ice, Bacardi Silver, CRC, Budweiser Select and Bud Light... so it’s been a great run. My partner and I (Mike Thomas) have a lot of racing clients that go to Key West, so it’s a very busy week for us. Fortunately, not like the old days where you would have to change motors after each race... motors these days can last the whole week. A little easier for us not having to pull all-nighters.

No job is more important than the Super Boat Medical and Safety Team. They are affectionately known as Angel 1 and Angel 2 in their respective helicopters along with safety vessels on the water. The rescue team manages the race course to make sure all is safe and ready for racing. They are equipped with rapid entry dive gear and are always ready for the unexpected. The safety team is strategically positioned around the race-course with typically two helicopters carrying 3 divers in each one, 4-6 medical boats and an emergency transport boat.

Key West is like the Indy 500 of boat racing... boats come from all around the world to race here. The first time we tested in Key West a couple years ago, we ran a 38’ Donzi and it was pretty interesting for us. We headed out of the harbor and were faced with 8’ to 10’ seas and we looked at each other and said... this is it, you never know what you’re gonna get in Key West. This is the best venue to watch powerboat racing in the world. It’s a great show and the boats come right next to you on the outer wall. It’s just amazing. Like Indy and open wheel cars... this is the Monte Carlo of Formula One.

Hugh Fuller, Billy Mauff, JR Noble, Joey Gratton, Jackie Piper Not so old legends talk trash, talk dirty and talk racing with the legend himself and Face-of-Super Boat... Stan Lane. To hear these guys (and gal) talk... Billy Mauff with the New York slang and Hugh Fuller with the gravel in his voice... they are unique. You can see the enthusiasm from young Jackie Piper... she can’t and won’t hold back. The ever cool JR, like Texan TV star ‘Who Shot JR’... and JG. Listen to the always calm and diplomatic Joey Gratton. Roundtable from some of the best... uncensored and uncut.
