T

he invention of the modern computer and the prolific evolution of the World Wide Web have significantly altered the way we live in the last couple of decades. We seem to be in constant communication with those we know as well as building relationships with people we have never actually met. Messages are instantly sent and received with documents and photos attached, and we can borrow, buy and sell at will. The knowledge of the world is literally at our finger tips – that is, of course, for those who are willing to learn and harness this important technology. OK, I admit it. When it comes to technology, I guess I’m just a “stick in the mud”. I don’t feel the need to jump up early in the morning and check my E-mail, as there is no computer in my home. I’ve never sent or received a text message, and the only blackberries we have will be served in a cobbler later this week. But don’t get me wrong. We do have running water and electricity, as well as a phone and a television. Our TV is connected to an aluminum antenna attached to the roof of our home which magically provides us with at least three stations from which to choose! I also have a cell phone. I don’t type on it or surf the web, and I don’t take pictures. It does, however, come in handy when I actually want to “speak” with someone. There are plenty of real books in our home and I enjoy using the public library. There is just nothing quite like a good book, a comfortable chair and a cup of Earl Gray tea. Inasmuch as I enjoy touting the merits of a simple life at home, I am quickly jerked back into the new, real world of technology the moment I get to my office. My staff are E-mailing, up-loading, downloading and unloading. They use PDF, JPEG, peg leg and There is just anything else which will help them get the job done. We nothing quite like could not run our publishing business without this wona good book, derful technology available to us.

a comfortable chair As of this week, we have finally launched our new web and a cup of site. We feel it’s informative and interesting and just a bit Earl Gray tea. whimsical. You can now read the entire Shopper on line,

get advertising prices and circulation figures as well as information on who to contact and how. We have also installed an archive of articles which will allow you to read the past “Publisher’s Page” you may have missed, along with “What’s in Your Garage” and “The Armchair Gardener”. So, for those of you who embrace this new technology, please visit our new site. We think you’ll like it. For the rest of us, I encourage you to put on the tea kettle, pull up a comfortable chair and enjoy The Coweta Shopper on “real” ink and paper! As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium. You’ll be seeing a lot more of us now! www.thecowetashopper.com

Community Welcome House offers a place of healing. Our safe haven has received over 500 calls for help this year. Currently we have 12 women and 12 children safe with us. We need a van. It does not have to be new. It just needs to be reliable and in good working condition and donated. It needs to pass emissions. We have wonderful volunteers who give their time and help us meet  some transportation needs.    We have several repairs that need to be addressed at the safe-haven. These range from painting, to rotten wood around windows and other areas in our outside area, kitchen area, flooring, fence needs repairing (some boards are loose and warped), metal roof over the laundry room leaks.   Our children are excited about the progress being made on the Bright Space areas. We need some volunteer groups to come assist with moving this forward. This is going to be an incredible addition to our mission in ending domestic violence while helping our children work through the trauma they have been exposed to.   Saturday November 6 from 6:00 am-10:00 am Belk Charity Day; huge savings throughout the store. $5 ticket to get in with a return of the $5 off the first purchase. Private Party It was Halloween night when a driver called our roadservice dispatch office complaining that he was locked out of his car. I forwarded the information to a locksmith, along with one more detail: The car was parked at a nudist colony. Of course, the locksmith arrived in record time. But when he called in later, he wasn’t amused. “Figures,” he said. “I finally get to go to a nudist colony, and they’re having a costume party!” -- Contributed by Neil Klein ~~~❦~~~

26 Spence Avenue, Newnan, GA • Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 noon

Mummified Mom Last year my daughter and her children were invited to a Halloween party. Her older son wanted to go as Count Dracula; her daughter, as a ballerina; her younger son, as the cabin boy in Treasure Island. Then my daughter donned her own costume, wrapping herself in strips of white sheeting. At the party she collapsed, exhausted, on the sofa. “And who are you?” someone asked her. “I’m a tired mummy,” my daughter said. -- Contributed by Corinne Morse ~~~❦~~~ I’ve Created a Monster! For Halloween, my grandson wanted to be “The Incredible Hulk.” Using food coloring and a washcloth, my daughter dyed his hands, face, neck and blond hair the green shade of the TV monster. After his bath the next morning, a faint green tint still remained. As my grandson was going out the door to school, he handed his mother a slip of paper he had forgotten to give her earlier. My daughter quickly opened the note. School pictures were going to be taken that day. -- Contributed by Ruth H. Smith

Don’t Play With Fire As firefighters, we are required to wear our full bunker gear on all safety calls, even to advise homeowners of a county ordinance against burning leaves after dark. Last Halloween, two co-workers waited on the porch of one such offending household, helmets in hand, until a woman finally opened the door. Promptly dropping a candy bar into each helmet, she remarked, “You boys are a little old for this sort of thing, aren’t you?” and closed the door. -- Contributed by Steve Farmer ~~~❦~~~ Outfit Over-Easy The last thing my friend Christy was prepared for was an invitation to a costume party. Eight and a half months pregnant, she was in no shape for any conventional costume. Still, she wanted to go, so she painted a big yellow circle on an extra-extra-large white T-shirt, dug a pair of red devil horns out of her kids’ Halloween junk pile ... and went as a deviled egg. -- Contributed by Betty C. Hatcher

A wildflower is a plant that grows and reproduces on its own in woods, fields, wetlands, along road sides, and other uncultivated areas. Some plants not originally from Georgia have long ago escaped into the wild and are now thought of as wildflowers. The common orange ditch lily, the multiflora rose, purple Loostrife, Kudzu, Japanese honey suckle, and even the state flower of Georgia - the Cherokee Rose - are not true native plants.

No Registration Fee & Special Rates Through December!

Wildflowers can be used in our home landscapes, parks, and on road sides to attract and support birds, bees, and butterflies. In return the bees carry out the very necessary work of pollinating plants. Butterflies also aid in pollination. Birds spread plants by spreading seeds.

When growing wildflowers, be sure to select those that would naturally grow in the area. Clear out sod and other plants. Till and rake the soil and sow the seeds. Have good soil contact, lightly cover, and water. Don’t compact the soil. Continue watering regularly for several weeks. Sow on a calm day, mixing seeds with sand to spread. A light mulch of pine straw - not hay - could protect the seeds and shade them. Fall is a good time to plant wild flowers in the Piedmont region of Georgia.

What’s In Your Garage?

Car Shows … Bug-A-Rama All Volkswagen Car Show Saturday, Nov. 13, 11 to 3

Bob Spruck, a 32 year resident of Sharpsburg, has been a British sports car enthusiast since the ‘60s. Most of the grunts in Vietnam dreamed of buying their dream car upon their return to the world. Bob did, too, except rather than dreaming of the muscle cars that were so popular at the time, like Mustangs, Camaros, and GTOs, he dreamed of Austin Healey Sprites and MGs. When he did safely return, he bought a used Sunbeam Alpine. He followed that with a few Bugeye Sprites and MG Midgets. To experience the unique and sporty characteristics of British sports cars, he participated in autocrosses and gymknanas at local airports and shopping center parking lots. Career, grad school, his first house, two children, and a move to Georgia all contributed to a twenty year hiatus during which he had no sports car but still retained his interest and enthusiasm. In 1989, while at a vintage sports car race at Road Atlanta, near Gainesville, GA and hearing the names and home towns of the entrants in the next race announced on the PA system, he heard the name of a racer from Newnan. He found him in the paddock later, introduced himself and explained his latent desire to get re-involved with sports cars and racing. His enthusiasm got him an invitation to the guy’s home shop to see his race car close up and then a request to be his crewman, supporting him at races and working on the car between races. Bob even bought a tired 1972 MG Midget that he restored to use on the street and to exhibit in car shows. After a while, he thought he’d like to build a race car for himself, so he and his race partner built one from an abandoned restoration project. Bob has vintage raced that 1967 Midget since 1991 and has almost 50 races on it. Vintage racing is defined as road racing a sports car or sedan manufactured before about 1974. There are about thirty organizations all over the country that sponsor races. Cars can be prepared only as they would have been able to be prepared in their year of manufacture and raced accordingly. Bob has raced his car two to four times a year at such tracks as Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen (NY), Virginia International Raceway, Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Roebling Road Raceway near Savannah, Carolina Motorsports Park, and even

changes in fluid levels.

(NAPSI)-According to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), customer involvement can help ensure better auto service. Here are tips:

• Note when the problem occurs and whether it’s constant or intermittent, and if it occurs when the engine is cold or after it’s warmed up.

• Keep a record of all repairs and service.

• Be prepared to describe the symptoms and carry a written list.

• Pay attention to your vehicle’s warning lights, changes in performance and handling, any unusual sounds, drips and leaks, or

• Let the technician diagnose and recommend a remedy.

• Don’t hesitate to request definitions of technical terms. • Ask to be apprised of the problem, the recommended fix and approximate cost before authorizing work. ASE is an independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. LIBRARY FOUNDATION PRESENTS FRAMED COPY OF CARNEGIE FOUNDATION LETTER ON ANNIVERSARY OF RE-OPENING OF CARNEGIE LIBRARY

Legal Briefs: W

elcome to The Shopper’s new column, Legal Briefs. Our goal will be to regularly provide informative articles about areas of the law that affect everyday life. Today we begin with auto accidents, and the importance of UM Coverage. According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, there are 839 crashes daily on Georgia’s roadways. Some are minor fender-benders, but many are major wrecks causing injury and death due to careless drivers’ poor judgment and driver negligence. The increased use of cell phones by drivers is an example of such negligence. Further, many negligent drivers only have minimum liability insurance coverage of $25,000.00, which is often not enough to pay for all of your injuries and damage. Therefore, it’s very important that all drivers carry Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Insurance Coverage (UM) in addition to carrying your liability coverage required by law.

Pictured (L-R): Dianne Stevenson, Amy Maple, David Farmer In recognition of the one year anniversary of the historic reopening of the Carnegie library in downtown Newnan, a framed copy of the letter from the President of the Carnegie Foundation was presented to the library. The letter, written by Dr. Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Foundation and former President of the New York Public Library and Brown University, tells the moving story of what a library meant to him and what a city library can mean for the children of Newnan. Making the presentation to Amy Maple, Media Coordinator and Dianne Stevenson, Media Assistant on the Newnan Carnegie Library was David Farmer, president of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation. “The future of our children begins with learning to appreciate the written word in any format that it might take and a library is the place where that begins”, stated Farmer. He added, “I hope that people will take the time to read the content of Dr Gregorian’s letter to the citizens of Newnan, it is inspiring.” Georgia’s oldest existing Carnegie Library is located at 1 LaGrange Street in historic downtown Newnan. Operating hours are 9-5 weekdays, and 10-2 first Saturdays of the month. The Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation, a 501-(c)-3 charitable corporation, provides additional support through its membership for outstanding children’s and adult’s programming, materials and children’s books to augment unbudgeted needs. For further information or to join, www.newnancarnegielibraryfoundation.org or nclf@numail.org.

UM Coverage is very inexpensive, but is invaluable if you are injured and “the other guy” does not have you fully covered. Our firm had a recent case where our client was seriously injured by a negligent driver. The careless driver only had the legal minimum coverage of $25,000, and he had no significant personal accounts or assets to help pay for the damages he caused our client. Fortunately, our client carried his own UM coverage, and we were able to use that coverage to get our client an extra $100,000.00 in much needed compensation. If our client had not signed up for his own UM coverage, he would have only received $25,000.00, which was not enough for his medical bills and the damages to his life and to his family. So, make sure you ask your own auto insurance agent about getting UM coverage, in case “the other guy” does not have you covered. If you are involved in a wreck, you must take the following steps to protect your rights. Don’t move your vehicle unless you in an unsafe situation. This allows the authorities to analyze fault. Call the police. A police report of the accident will help your insurance claim and any liability claims. Exchange information with the other driver. This will be helpful in getting all information needed before the accident report is completed. Call your insurance agent as soon as possible after an accident. Your insurance company may have cause to deny coverage if you fail to give prompt notice of the wreck. In future articles we will explore what to do if you are injured in the wreck. If you have been in an auto accident, and you have any questions or concerns, or need experienced professional assistance with your claims, please give us a call, and we will be glad to help you. How To Have An Open House by Nan Johnston of Southern Staging & Redesign

It’s smart to expose your house to a large number of buyers and an open house is a great way to get them inside to preview a house that they might like. However, be aware that everyone that attends may not be in the market for a new house and they just want a way to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Also, everyone that may be in the market for a house, may or may not be qualified for your property. Real estate professionals, in general, don’t feel that holding a public open house is an effective way to market a house. They do, however, feel that having an agent caravan open house is time well spent for the homeowner and the agent. It’s a great opportunity to give agents that have “qualified” buyers a chance to view a property so the agents can tell their customers all about the great features of a house. Assuming that your house is already prepared and in showing condition, the following tips can help whether you are you are selling For Sale By Owner (FSBO)or preparing for an agent caravan open house: Provide Parking - let your neighbors know about your plans so they will be understanding about all the cars parked in front of their property. Let The Light In - open up all the curtains and blinds and turn on all the lights through-out the house. Music - Help your agent by having the sound system up and running on a soft music station. Photos - if your landscaping is “master gardener” quality and it’s the dead of winter, lay out some photos of the yard taken in the spring and summer. Get Out - of the house that is. Agents aren’t comfortable giving the agent feedback about the house if the owner is around. Be Receptive - to the agents feedback. It may not be what you want to hear, but they are the professionals. They do this every day, know what buyers are seeking and know about other houses that compare to yours. This is the best information that a seller can have, so that you’ll know what you need to do in order to get a contract.
