Everyone has a chance to win at the Fair with so many competitions offered.

By BILL HAMMOND, Coweta County 4-H Extension Agent Summer is in full swing, and anticipation is building as the 2023 Kiwanis Coweta County Fair draws near!

This is one of Coweta’s favorite annual events and is set for September 14th to 24th. Folks need to prepare themselves for 11 days worth of unforgettable experiences filled with thrills, delectable food, captivating music, and boundless excitement. But hold on tight because there’s so much more to this fair than meets the eye.

Did you know that the fair hosts a variety of engaging livestock shows and competitions for all ages to participate in? Whether you’re a child or an adult, you’ll find a contest tailored just for you.

Let your inner Lumberjack or Lumberjill emerge in nail driving, crosscut, pulpwood toss, and pole climbing events, competing for the coveted Lumberjack/Lumberjill of the Year trophy and additional prize money.

Young ones in Pre-K through 7th grade can showcase their artistic flair in the Gingerbread House Decorating contest, provided with all the necessary supplies to create their most beautiful masterpiece in just thirty minutes. The winning gingerbread houses will be proudly displayed at the fair for all to admire.

Celebrate your happiest birthday by participating in the Youth Creative Birthday Cake Decorating contest, where you’ll bring your own baked cake and frosting supplies and transform them into a creatively designed birthday cake within an hour. Judges will evaluate your cake based on design, technique, appearance, and use of materials.

For school-age children up to seventh grade, the opportunity to decorate a Cookie Bouquet awaits, with supplies provided for them to craft a tasty bouquet to showcase. Youth have thirty minutes to Continued on PAGE 2

The Little Black Dress and I had just plopped down on the sofa for a little, as teens say now, “Netflix and Chill.”

The difference between that phrase and reality, at least in our situation, was we really were going to watch something on Netflix. And the “chill” involved a nice chardonnay.

Anyhow, I turn on/stream/upload/ whatever one does to get Netflix going. Instead of getting to my “home screen,” a message pops up. As near as I can recall, it is something along the lines that “this television” (being the one we are watching), does not appear to be part of the Home Network.

That gave me pause. I follow the online instructions and Netflix again tells me I am not part of the network. I again pause, thinking - this is my home, this is my television, this is my “Netflix.” Well, okay, all that is true except, apparently, the Netflix part.

I do what any guy in his sixties would do …

“Hey dad, what’s up?” The Eldest says after picking up my call.

“Netflix is telling me I am not part of the ‘home network.’ Oh … and why is the account in your name?” I responded.

“I just did that when we set it up,” he responded.

I then proceed to point out that when he “set it up,” he was living at home when he wasn’t at college. He is now in Texas with a new wife. Basically, he took the Netflix account with him … BUT … I am the one paying for it.

Make sense? I mean it makes sense what happened, but I don’t think it makes sense that he gets to take our account, the one I am paying for, and just make it his own.

“Well, I will take photos of the screens so you can see what you all had saved and are watching when I get back,” Caleb, that would be the Eldest said. “Listen, love you, gotta go get ready.”

An aside, technology is pretty amazing, like how your son can essentially steal your Netflix account. Furthermore, he and I were having that conversation while I was in Newnan and he was at Fort Irwin in California, sitting on his tank getting ready for war games.

Since he wouldn’t be back for three weeks or so, we bit the proverbial bullet and got a John and Corby Netflix account. Our very own. A clean slate so to speak.

And that is exactly what I mean, because when we signed on, there was no “continue watching for John,” “because you watched …” “your saved shows” and so on.

A clean slate, literally. Nothing showed up. How often do we get a clean slate? How often do we desperately wish for one? Take them when you can. They are a rare gift.

It is July. The month we celebrate our nation’s independence. So between the hotdogs, hamburgers, cook outs, picnics and adults blowing off their fingers after one too many “watch this, hold my beer,” please take a moment to thank that someone you know who serves or did in our nation’s military.

They are the reason we have a 4th. And that goes for you too, Caleb.

Every month, there are many new employees moving into Coweta County. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce and taking some of the new hires for a “Windshield Tour” of Coweta County. We took them to see many different areas and sites around the county.

One of the handouts provided to the new residents was a Coweta County “fun fact” sheet provided by the Chamber of Commerce. I knew many of the facts but there were several I did not so I thought I would share: • Coweta County covers 441 square miles with nearly 150,000 residents. The number of residents has nearly tripled since 1990 and will reach 163,00 in the next five years.

Caregiving is a challenge but you can successfully do it!

Most often the role of caregiving is not something that comes to us slowly. It hits us abruptly after a loved one’s illness, fall or hospital stay.

One day your life is full and you have plans for the future and the next day, BAM! Life has taken an unexpected turn.

If you have just begun this caregiver journey, you may not know how you are going to do this, especially since your plate is already full. How do you gain the confidence you need to do this caregiving thing and do it right?

You take it one step at a time.

First – You need to pull up every bit of courage and patience you have from your toe nails and tell yourself YOU CAN DO THIS! You may have doubts, you may not know how, but you can survive this.

Next – Learn everything you can about the illness or injury that your loved one has. Read, Google and go to workshops.

Third – Call a mandatory family conference. This can be in-person, by phone or by FaceTime. The purpose of this call is to get everyone on the same page ... This is what we are dealing with, this is what it means, and I cannot do it alone. I am going to survive this and I need your help to do so. If you need help with this conversation ask a trusted friend, pastor or a Geriatric Case Manager.

Fourth – Run, do not walk to your nearest Elder Law Attorney, Financial Advisor, Banker and VA Specialist. You need to know what financial resources are available to help with care. You need to know if name changes on property, bonds, etc., need to happen. You need to make sure all your legal paperwork, wills, trusts and Power of Attorneys are in order. If your loved one is a veteran, you need to know how to apply for the programs they are entitled to.

Fifth – Commit to not doing this alone. Caring

for someone does not mean that you provide 100% of the care. The best care you can give your loved one may not be the care you provide. How many super heroes have you seen save the world all on their own? You have got to let someone else help.

Sixth – Do not isolate. Isolation is one of the most damaging effects that caregiving has on the caregiver. Continue to go to church, go out with friends and find a support group.

Seventh – Consider that your loved one may not be the only one that needs to be medicated.

Caregiving is stressful. One doctor said that 97% of all illnesses could be traced back to stress. You have got to survive this: for yourself and for your loved one. Go to your doctor, get a checkup and get on something to help you with anxiety, stress and depression.

And last – Don’t forget to laugh. It has been proven, that laughter improves your mood and helps the chemicals in your brain, maintain balance.

Caregiving is hard but you can do this, one step at a time.

Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center, located on the third floor of Piedmont Medical Plaza 1, provides complimentary classes and services to anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer at any point in their journey.

Topping Out on New South Tower Piedmont Newnan Hospital recently celebrated the topping out of its new South Tower. The first phase of this $65 million expansion project will add 80,000 square feet and 50 new patient beds.

It will consist of three levels that will connect at the south side of the hospital and the structure is designed to support five future additional floors.

The program focuses on Five Pillars of Wellness – Exercise, Education is provided through a Let’s Talk series, led by Margarette Coleman, and the Oncology Support Group led by Oncology Social Hospital staff and community members gathered Nutrition, Creativity, Education, and Relaxation.

Nutrition is also the focus of the center’s in-house dietitian, Andrea Swartz. Swartz meets privately with cancer patients by appointment to discuss their changing dietary needs during their cancer journey.

“This is a significant milestone in the construction of the new South Tower that will open next spring. We’re very excited to be celebrating this with our community,” said Piedmont Newnan Chief Operating Officer (COO) Vicki Kaiser. “We appreciate everyone who joined us to celebrate the last beam being placed and we are excited for the completion of this much needed expansion to our hospital’s campus.”

Front Porch Stories My husband’s grandmother was a well-known resident of Madras, Georgia.

Lee Phillips may have been best known for the multitude of quilts she handstitched and also demonstrated at Powers Crossroads Fair, back when that was a thing. Of course, anyone would be impressed by her fortitude as a widow raising seven children alone, so it could have been that. Come to think of it, it may have been her appearance on the 1950’s era Queen for a Day show, and the item she chose for her prize.

More on that later.

Grandmother Phillips created legacy pieces and made sure her grandchildren had something she had made. I don’t know if she was able to share something with every grandchild, but she definitely tried. My husband’s quilt was made in the early 1950s. It is constructed of cotton ticking, pieces from clothing and assorted blocks cut from flour sacks. It has seen better days, having been in my husband’s life for nearly 70 years.

Grandmother Phillips lived in a wood framed house on Highway 29, and it is still there today. I recall the rooms had tall ceilings and a bathroom that was clearly a coat closet in its early days. It was so small I could barely get inside when I was expecting our first child. My father in law said it was added “later”. I can’t imagine my mother in law and her six siblings waiting for that tiny bathroom. My brother, two sisters and I would have had fights over less.

I often think of Grandmother Phillips when I sew. I first met her when she was in her late seventies and I was amazed at her ability to do pretty much anything she wanted to do. Quilting and cooking were her number one and two favorite things, only after gardening and canning, which, to be honest, were also numbers one and two.

It was in the mid 1970s when I first went to her home. We had a family reunion, and all of the aunts proclaimed I was “the one” because John had never brought a girlfriend “home” before to meet the family.

I remember seeing some sort of contraption close to the ceiling. It was something I’d never seen before.

That contraption was her quilting frame.

My mom and both grandmothers had “modern” household tools that helped them with their tasks and hobbies. I had never seen anything like a quilting frame way up on the ceiling, but after a bit of explanation from my boyfriend at the time, I discovered how it worked.

Grandmother Phillips would lower that thing by loosening ropes which allowed it to descend to the level most comfortable for quilting. She would move her ladder backed chair along all four sides as she progressed with her stitches.

I think of her often, most times when I am planning a project on my high-tech machine. I have no doubt that Grandmother Phillips would pass up the chance to work on anything but her old quilt frame, no matter how fancy something else was.

Oh, and that Queen for a Day thing? She was offered everything from a diamond ring to a fur coat.

What did she ask for? A rototiller for her garden. Her mule got too old to work so thankfully she decided to go for modern. Maybe folks passing by knew her best by the elderly woman managing a tiller. Whatever she was known for, she was Grandmother Phillips to me, and a great inspiration.

Coweta Samaritan Clinic: Coweta Samaritan Clinic at 137 Jackson St. in Newnan offers free primary medical care to patients who meet certain requirements. To qualify, patients must be Coweta County residents who are 19 or older, have no health insurance and have an annual household income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

The clinic diagnoses, treats and helps patients manage acute illnesses such as the flu, as well as chronic diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. Patients can receive free prescription medications and supplies through a prescription assistance program. Diabetes counseling and nutrition education are also

Healing Bridge Clinic: Healing Bridge Clinic at 215 Willowbend Road in Peachtree City provides free primary health care to residents of Fayette and surrounding counties who meet eligibility requirements.

To qualify, all patients must be a Georgia resident between the ages of 18 to 64 years old and without any form of health care insurance (no private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or veteran’s benefits). Real Women Do Eat Quiche

Back in the early 1980s, a book became famous largely because of its provocative title, Real Men Don’t Eat Quiche. It was a bit of satire that probably would be unpublishable today, but I remember thinking several times since its publication that any man who doesn’t care for quiche is welcome to send his slice my way.

I recently experimented with a mini quiche recipe that turned out so well, I plan to use it again and again. A small serving of quiche is a versatile food that can be served at brunches, teas, receptions, and showers.

Earlier this month, my sister and I hosted a baby shower for my niece Cari. I had offered to make mini quiches, and to be honest, I spotted some frozen ones at the grocery store and was tempted to buy a couple of boxes and call it done. Still, I was eager to try a new way of baking the pastry cups using a technique I’d read about online, and I also wanted to make two different flavors, so I opted for homemade. When I got compliments on the quiches at the shower and mentioned that I’d almost purchased the premade ones at the grocery store, a couple of the ladies shook their heads and insisted I’d made the right choice.

These bite-size quiches couldn’t have been simpler to make, and my taste-tester husband (a real man, I might add) liked them too!

Recipe Mini Quiches o 2 deep-dish

pie shells, thawed o 5 large eggs o 1 cup whole milk o 1/2 teaspoon salt o 1/2 teaspoon pepper o 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder o 1/2 cup grated cheese plus extra for garnish o 1 cup add-ins of your choice (meat, chopped vegetables, etc.)

On a lightly floured surface, roll out each pie shell and flatten with a rolling pin until it’s at least a 12-inch circle. Using a 2-1/2-inch-round cookie cutter, cut 24 circles from each pie shell. (I used a scalloped cutter to create flowerlike edges around the circles.) When the dough is thin enough and the scraps are rerolled, it works perfectly.

Spray a mini muffin pan with cooking spray, insert a pastry round into each well, and press the dough up the sides of each one.

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a small bowl, combine eggs, milk, and seasonings and combine well. Stir in 1/2 cup of cheese and the add-ins.

Spoon approximately one tablespoon of egg mixture into each cup, stopping just shy of the top of the dough, and garnish with a bit of extra cheese. Bake for 20-22 minutes. Yields 48 mini quiches.

You may serve these immediately or let them cool, place them in a plastic container, and refrigerate them overnight. Before serving, warm quiches in a preheated 350-degree oven for 5-7 minutes and serve hot.

Note: I halved the egg mixture and used 1/4 cup of mozzarella and 1/2 cup cooked and drained spinach in one half, and 1/4 cup of cheddar and 1/2 cup chopped bacon in the other. Feel free to experiment!
