Area Agency on Aging one of Georgia’s best-kept secrets One of Georgia’s best kept secrets was never meant to be a secret. And as Georgia seniors’ needs grow, the secret is getting out. In 1978, after the earlier passage of the 1965 Older Americans Act, the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) was formed. The mission of the AAA is to “promote independence and well-being for older persons and adults with disabilities in the region through quality programs and services”. Our local AAA, Three Rivers Area Agency on Aging, is located in Franklin and serves a 10-county area including Coweta and Troup counties. The Fayette County area is covered by the Atlanta Regional Commission. With a statewide data base of over 24,000 resources, the AAA is a onestop call for many needs, questions, and information. Below are just a few of the services offered by the Area Agency on Aging. Senior Employment: Are you over the age of 55 and interested in gaining or enhancing your work skills? Do you need help finding employment? If so, the AAA can help. Not only can they help you find and train for a job, you can get paid while training. In-Home Services: Are you

Senior Living Advice with BETH DOW, Geriatric Care Manager

independent, but just need a little help? AAA can help provide meals delivered to your home, assistance with light housekeeping and assistance with your ADLs (Activities of Daily Living: dressing, eating, bathing, toileting and transferring.) They offer caregiver relief services and coordination, monitoring and evaluation of options and services to meet your individual social and health needs. Their Community Services include: Senior Activity Centers, lunchtime meals, Alzheimer’s day care, nutrition information and counseling, and wellness programs for individuals with diabetes or other chronic conditions. They offer resources and support groups for grandparents raising grandchildren. They can provide legal assistance, information, and counseling for seniors. And if you are ready to sign up for Medicare, call

them first to get the understanding and information you need from someone who is not trying to sell you a product. With the restrictions COVID-19 caused for many living in nursing homes, their Transitions Program can help assist individuals who would like to transition from a nursing home back to the community. They also offer a wide array of Home Assistive Devices. Everything from telephones with large keys and extra volume, to extended “grabbers” to reach things on the floor, to seats that swivel to help you get out of the car easier, and even “weighted” forks and spoons to help those who may shake when eating. This is just a snapshot of the services the Area Agency on Aging offer. There are more – too many to mention here. I urge you to call them with any question or need. They may have the solution that you didn’t even know was available! They can be reached at 1-866-8545652. I encourage you to write down this number and keep it close by. Share it. This is one secret that needs to be shared! Beth Dow is a Dementia and Alzheimer’s Educator, CAEd and Geriatric Care Manager. Readers can contact her at beth@ solutionsbybeth.com.

Natural Disasters and Real Estate

What happens if a property that you are buying or selling is destroyed? With the recent tornado that destroyed parts of Newnan, some of you may be wondering this. Hopefully, this is not your current situation.

Most Realtors here use the Georgia Association of Realtor (GAR) Forms for contracts. The purchase and sale agreement specifically has language dedicated to this situation. Section 3C of this form states: Risk of Damage to Property. Seller warrants that at the time of closing the Property and all items remaining with the Property, if any, will be in substantially the same condition (including conditions disclosed in the Seller’s Property Disclosure Statement or Seller’s Disclosure of Latent Defects and Fixtures Checklist) as of the Offer Date, except for changes made to the condition of Property pursuant to the written agreement of Buyer and Seller. At time of possession, Seller shall deliver Property clean and free of trash, debris, and personal property of Seller not identified as remaining with the Property. Notwithstanding the above, if the Property is destroyed or substantially destroyed prior to closing, Seller shall promptly give notice to Buyer of the same and provide Buyer with whatever information Seller has regarding the availability of insurance and the disposition of any insurance claim. Buyer or Seller may terminate this

Agreement without penalty not later than fourteen (14) days from receipt of the above notice. If Buyer or Seller do not terminate this Agreement, Seller shall cause Property to be restored to substantially the same condition as on the Offer Date. The date of closing shall be extended until the earlier of one year from the original date of closing, or seven (7) days from the date that Property has been restored to substantially the same condition as on the Offer Date and a new certificate of occupancy (if required) is issued. Kitchen with Angela Each spring, I begin looking for new salad recipes to try, and I especially like a hearty salad that can be eaten as a meal for lunch or dinner. Because one of my obscure hobbies is recreating recipes from old department store restaurants, I decided to try a new one that hails from Sakowitz Bros., a store in Houston, Texas, whose famous salad recipe was shared in a 1986 cooking column in a Houston newspaper.

284 Bullsboro Drive Newnan GA 30263

SHOPPER A shrimp salad perfect for springtime

“Caregiving to me is going to work and knowing I’m there to provide support and encouragement to someone whether it’s the patient/client or a family member. That support could be physical, emotional or conversational.” It’s exceptional caregivers like Annette and others with Home Helpers that can make a huge difference in your loved one’s life.

As with so many of the great old department stores, an immigrant family founded this one. Tobias and Simon Sakowitz, whose father was a Ukrainian immigrant, founded a store in Galveston in the early 1900s and later opened a store in Houston before eventually expanding to become a popular retail chain. The stores closed in 1990, but thanks to magazine and internet articles, the legend lives on. Sakowitz was the place for luxury shopping in Houston. The flagship store had a tropical mural in the shoe department and an “accessory bar” where you could buy your midcentury modern Lucite handbag. If time travel ever becomes a reality, you’ll find me scoping out some old department store every day. For years now, I’ve been seeing references to Sakowitz’s Sky Terrace, a charming restaurant decorated in Gulf Coast Colonial style, complete with curved white wrought-iron railings at the entrance. One menu item that seems to have been such a hit with customers is the Sakowitz Shrimp Salad. I wondered what made the salad so special, and now that I’ve sampled it, I’m convinced the secret ingredient is anchovy paste. That particular ingredient has never appeared on my grocery list before, but it was surprisingly easy to find in stores. It was key to making this sauce, and as Sipsey so famously said in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, “The secret’s in the sauce.” Anyone can toss some shrimp and lettuce together, but this homemade salad dressing is where the magic is.

Overalls Over The Years I have a pair of overalls that are more like a treasure than multipurpose work clothes. Thirty-seven years ago, we lost our home in a midnight fire. My husband, three-year-old daughter and I got out but we had nothing more than the clothes on our backs and the cars we drove. My in-laws lived in the land adjacent to us and I needed something to wear besides my nightgown. I’m built quite differently than the women in my in-law family, so my father-in-law Jack offered a pair of his overalls. I graciously accepted. Jack wore overalls daily, unless another occasion called for pants and a shirt. I remember him walking through the pastures and down the hill to see his grandchildren. His hands were never empty; there were gifts of tomatoes, onions, carrots or whatever he had plucked from his garden. Jack had a certain walk. His tummy thrust out, his body would shift from left to right as he took his short, quick steps. His hair was curly and white as snow. And I was always delighted each time I saw him walking down the hill toward our house, most often with those overall pockets bulging with whatever tools he was using, or found along the way. I wore those overalls the morning after the fire, as my husband and I went to Newnan to buy clothes. My hair was singed, I hadn’t slept and I was wearing my mother-in-law’s tennis shoes. I’ll never forget the sales woman who knew me well and always helped me choose the right clothes for my corporate job. “Honey!” she exclaimed as we walked in the store. “What happened?” I began to cry and my husband said, “We’ve had a fire and she needs clothes for work.” The woman knew my tastes and everything she selected was perfect. She added some jeans and t-shirts to the pile, and we went on our way.

I put the overalls on again a few days later as we went to clear what was left of our home. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months. Those overalls served me time and time again as we eventually began building our new home.

By the time we were ready to finish the interior, I was expecting our son. The overalls were easily adjusted for the expanding waistline, and releasing a button or two made for great maternity work clothing.

I’m not sure if Jack actually gave me the overalls or if time just passed and I never gave them back. The paint stains on them are as old as my son and as recent as a year ago. The overalls were there in the days after the recent EF4 tornado hit our precious City of Homes. I wore them to help at our church, as we began to salvage whatever we could. I had planned to work even more, but I’m 62 years old now and unlike those overalls, things don’t work as well as they used to. With all the devastation in our sweet Newnan, I know Jack would be there if he were still with us. And of course, he would be wearing his overalls. While COVID-19 is at the forefront of most people’s minds, it’s important to remember that preventing and managing other illnesses and medical conditions are equally critical to maintaining good health. Many people of all ages don’t receive routine health screenings or seek essential health care services because they can’t afford them. What can I do to help my landscape plants recover after freezing temperatures?

This last freeze was tough on our landscape plants and small fruits like strawberries. They were just starting to put out new growth. In fact, local strawberry growers had to cover tender berries and blooms that had already formed. Some even reported temperatures as low as 27 degrees in certain areas around Coweta County.
