Legendary is a phrase most people attach to Merle Haggard. A Country Music Hall of Famer, Haggard will bring his show to neighboring Carroll County in April. He’ll be the headlining act of a Southern Moon Productions concert event on Saturday, April 26 in Carrollton. He’ll take the stage at 8 p.m. and follow warm-up bands such as the Groove Gypsies, SawDust and the Malpass Brothers, Chris and Taylor. The Master of Ceremonies will be Hall of Fame Disc Jockey Rhubarb Jones. Gates open at the VFW Fairgrounds in Carrollton at 5:30 p.m. Most recently, Haggard made an appearance with fellow Hall of Famers Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson at the 56th Grammy Awards in January. The trio was joined on stage by today’s superstar Blake Shelton as they performed several songs, including Haggard’s smash “Okie From Muskogee.” Haggard and his songs were usually found near or at the top of the charts on a regular basis throughout his career. Haggard charted scores of Top Ten songs and has 40, No. 1 hits. Tickets for the concert are $61 for VIP seating and $48 General Admission and Lawn Seating. The tickets can be purchased at For more information, call 770-360-2531.

GDOT issues H.E.R.O. Unit to assist on I-85 in Coweta County A HERO unit is now in Coweta County. After watching HERO units service Metro Atlanta for years, residents and travelers through Coweta will have this important assistance available for roadside mishaps or breakdowns. The Coweta County Government Facebook Page said that the Georgia Department of Transportation began issuing one HERO (Highway Emergency Response Operator) to patrol I-85 in Coweta on March 1. The unit will patrol from the Fulton-Coweta County line

to Exit 47 (Bullsboro Drive/Highway 34). The HERO unit will be available to assist with serious incidents as far south as the Coweta-Meriwether County line near Exit 35 (Grantville). According to the website, you can dial “511” and select option “1” to request HERO motorist assistance. The GDOT Transportation Management Center (TMC) dispatches HEROs to traffic-related incidents. n earlier days we had a saying, “big brother is watching”. Futuristic movies featured government agencies watching their citizens via “movie cameras” mounted on city light poles and public places. A good James Bond movie always had a “Bug” (microphone) hidden in a light fixture or phone, along with cameras rolling behind a mirror. And, of course, there was the tracking device made into the heel of one’s shoe. And this was before GPS! We all thought this was pure science fiction and that no person, business or nation would want to go to the trouble of knowing who we are, where we go and what we do, say or purchase. Ha! That was a time when “invasion of privacy” was when someone was listening in on a party line phone, or steamed open your letters, read the contents, then resealed the envelope. One was really considered to be proudly anonymous by having a private telephone number. Really? Now that I use the computer more than ever, I’m beginning to understand just how much my privacy is being invaded – all day, every day. When I use a credit card I’m revealing my buying preferences. I can’t buy gas without revealing my zip code. Now “Big brother” knows where my car is and where I get mail. I enjoy looking at interesting sites on the internet, sometimes looking at products I’m interested in purchasing. But if you won’t accept “cookies” some sites don’t seem to have much interest in you. A few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to buy one of those English style “flat caps” - tweed, of course. I located a website that had just what I wanted. But inasmuch as I’m more of a looker than a buyer, I put the matter aside. Now somebody, maybe everybody on the planet, knows I want a flat hat! And they know what size my head is, where I live, my age and my income, if I had one. So now, every time I open my little ipad, a picture of that exact hat dominates the screen until I can delete it. Perhaps I should just go ahead and buy that darned flat hat and get it over with so they’ll take me off their list! They say not to put anything on the web you wouldn’t want your Grandmother to know. You’re telling it to the world. However, as I have nothing much to hide, I’ll go ahead and tell you, in advance, what can be found out about me through this stealth surveillance. (1) I’m Perhaps looking to buy some neuropathy foot cream I should just go ahead and cause my feet hurt. (2) You can know I have buy that darned flat hat and an aluminum antennae and no cable TV since I’m always looking at the PBS schedule on the get it over with so they’ll take web (for the two channels we get). (3) I have me off their list! emailed the IRS that, upon my death, the ashes are to be mailed to them so they can finally be done with me. (4) As you now know that I like English tweed flat caps, you can rightly assume that I own an old British sports car. (5) And finally, LL Bean knows the size pants I now wear, and that they are, unfortunately, somewhat bigger than they used to be. Other than that, I’m a pretty boring old chap!

Now that The Coweta Shopper has a new and improved web site, you can probably find what you are looking for from our loyal advertisers. You won’t see any nude pictures, bad jokes, gossip, or anything else you wouldn’t want your Grandmother to see, but you will find some of the best products and services available in our area. Maybe even a grey, English tweed “Flat Hat”.

There’s just something exciting about riding a motorcycle – the rumbling pipes of a fine-tuned machine; the sounds, smell and wind in your face experience. It can take you to parts unknown – to dreams hoped for yet not realized. But Gene Evans, owner of Great South HarleyDavidson in Newnan, knows this better than most. “My first motorbike at age 13 was called an Allstate Puch that I picked up for $35. I later found a good buy on a Sears Vespa which a chap had taken apart and was just boxes of parts. I paid him two dollars, got it running and rode it for two years. Not a bad investment!” Gene worked in the shop of the local Ford dealership in Macon after graduating from high school and while in college at Georgia Southern. After graduation in 1969, he was offered a couple of “Good” jobs starting at a wopping $600 a month. Thinking he could do better, he tried the Ford dealer again. “I made $2,600 the first month and then knew what my career should be.” In 1974 he was offered his own dealership in Union City, which was the beginning of the successful Gene Evans Ford, which he eventually sold. When the opportunity came along to start a Harley dealership in Newnan, Gene felt it was the right fit for him. “The location was right, the time was right and the Harley brand was right.” Thus, Great South Harley-Davidson was born right here in Coweta County in 2007. It’s one of the newest and largest Harley dealership in Georgia. “We sell motorcycles to people from all walks of life. It brings together salesmen, lawyers, teachers, factory workers and surgeons, who can all come together as one group where everyone is equal in their enjoyment of the riding experience. Great South’s Harley Owner’s Group (HOG) has nearly 500 members, one of the South’s largest groups.” His Showroom has over a hundred beautiful, glittering, fast machines that can sure stir a man’s excitement, and now days, a women’s, too. When asked what made his business successful, Gene said, “Harley-Davidson is the only brand with a loyal following along with a good quality product. I believe in taking care of our customers and they know we will do the right thing if there’s ever a problem. My Dad taught me that.” From his youth, Gene Evans has been interested with anything with a motor attached. (Well maybe not a washing machine or vacuum!) Besides his passion for motorcycles, he has driven race cars (super late model), and became a pilot. During his last quarter of college, Gene decided he wanted to get a license to fly, which can be expensive. “I didn’t have any money so I traded my corvette to the instructor for the complete lessons, right through licensing. I delivered the car and got ready to fly. The corvette, however, was stolen from the man’s driveway that night! He honored the agreement and I got a license.” After years of gasoline running through his veins, Gene Evans still loves those “things with motors” and enjoys sharing his interests with others. He and his wife, Linda, live in Coweta County and have a son, two daughters and 7 grandchildren. Publisher’s Note: I suppose Gene and I have more in common than we thought. I, too, like race cars and motorcycles. My first one was also from Sears-Roebuck and at the age of 13. I, however, had to pay the full “sticker”price for mine $284! And I can vouch for the great customer service at Great South Harley-Davidson. As I was leaving for a motorcycle trip to Savannah one morning, the overly complicated warning system on the dash displayed a problem. I was within a mile of Gene’s dealership so I stopped in for help. Even though I wasn’t on a Harley, they were kind enough to find the problem, make and easy fix, and get me on my way within 30 minutes - and with no appointment. I though they had made a mistake when I was presented a bill for $5.00. “We’re just happy we could help you”, they said. You don’t quickly forget customer service like that. HOME At Last!

Patty Gironda with

Spying some freshly-sliced pork belly at the Asian market I frequent, I knew I was destined to try my hand at curing, smoking and glazing my own bacon.. Happy with my first attempt, I’m already making notes to improve the next batch. My first process was curing the pork belly with equal parts sugar and salt. After three days of curing I soaked the thick slices in cool water; changing the salty water every ten minutes or so. The pork belly was then laid out on a wire rack to dry before placing it in a smoker with dry hickory chips for three hours. It was after a light smoking that I opted not to soak the wood. Finally, I placed the bacon in a pan and lightly fried the strips with a glaze of cane syrup. That was it. The strips were stored in the fridge until today when I panfried the bacon and biscuits in the same pan. YUM and well worth the time and effort!

Patty Gironda is host of the popular TV show, Home at Last, and has a real passion for fine food and travel. Patty, along with her husband Ron, also enjoy entertaining guests at Newnan’s wonderful bed and breakfast, Casa Bella. Bray says goodbye

Sometimes a story just catches your attention. In this case, it was a Facebook post from Coweta County Government. Denise Bray (pictured with Coweta Co. Sheriff Mike Yeager in that Facebook post) is retiring after over 30 years of service to the citizens of Coweta County through the Sheriff ’s Office. That’s 30 years or 3 decades! She began working back in August of 1983 as a radio dispatcher for then-Sheriff Aaron Massey. Bray had since moved into the position of Clerk of the Courts Division which required working with civil process and sentences of the Superior Courts. The Coweta Shopper would like to say “Thank You” and congratulations on a job well done.

Toenail Fungus?

Toenail fungus infection (“onychomycosis”) is an extremely common infection of the nails by fungus. The infection is stubborn, difficult to treat, and results in unsightly and often painful toenails. Treatments are often slow, time-consuming and far from 100% effective. If you have this difficult to treat condition and are between the ages of 18-70 you may be eligible to participate in a research study conducted by Dr. Mark Ling, testing a topical investigational medication for the treatment of mild to moderate toenail fungus infection. To qualify, you must have fungal infection of one or both of your big toenails, but the infection must involve between 20% and 50% of the nail, no more, or less. All study visits and study medication are provided at no cost to you and qualified participants may be eligible for compensation for time and travel.

Are you planning a wedding ceremony and reception, but you’re on a budget? Here are some tips to help you save on your special day. It’s cheaper to get married during certain months, days and times, said Michael Meyers, owner and manager of Something Special in Newnan. Couples can save money if they get married in January, February, March and November. Also, it’s usually less expensive to get married on Friday nights, Saturday mornings and on Sundays, he said.

After couples determine their wedding budget, they can use an online wedding calculator recommended by Jamie Elliott McPherson, director of operations at Vinewood Plantation, to determine how much they should spend on catering, attire, flowers, music, photography and other items. Find the wedding calculator at:

March is the perfect month to do a soil test. Amend the soil with compost, dried manure, lime or other amendments as needed before tilling the area. Remember to fertilize each type of plant according to its individual needs. Nitrogen (first number) promotes leaf formation and green growth. Phosphorus (second number) produces flowers, seeds, berries and roots. Potassium (last number) is for overall health. A good general fertilizer is 10-10-10. March is also a good time to plant shrubs. Plant a little high for clay soils and mulch around them. Use 10-10-10 around most shrubs. Prune spring-flowering shrubs such as camellias, azaleas and forsythia after they finish blooming. Dead-head daffodils after they bloom, but don’t cut or twist the foliage. Leave it to yellow and die down. Cut back ornamental grasses to about six inches before new growth begins. Divide grasses when new growth starts. The Artemesia ‘Powis Castle’ can be pruned by the end of March. Grapes, muscadines and figs should have already been pruned. Plant asparagus, onions, radishes, beets, turnips and parsley now. Since the average last frost date here is April 15th — wait to plant all tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and annuals. April is the month to divide and replant perennials. Annuals can now be safely planted. This is the month to prepare and plant containers. Summer vegetables still need to wait for all danger of frost to pass and for the soil to warm to proper temperature. Don’t forget to water regularly if it doesn’t rain. This site also offers information about average wedding costs and budget advice from wedding bloggers. Coweta County has several economical venues for weddings and receptions:

 The courtroom in the Coweta County Probate Court at 200 Court Square in Newnan is available to rent for weddings, said Lorraine LaRue, coordinator at the Coweta County Visitors Center. It holds 250 guests, but can only be rented after regular court hours, not during the day. The cost is $300, which includes the wedding rehearsal. For more information, call (770) 254-2627.  The Historic Train Depot at 60 East Broad St. is open for wedding receptions. For prices, call Tom Redwine at (770) 301-2765 during normal working hours.

 Temple Avenue Park and Greenville Street Park in Newnan can be rented for weddings and receptions. Couples must call at least 30 days in advance, said Dean Smith, planner with the city of Newnan. He recommends making reservations even earlier because the parks are often booked six to eight months in advance. To reserve either park, call Newnan’s Planning and Zoning Department at (770) 254-2354. The parks do not have restroom facilities, and no portable facilities are allowed. a) Temple Avenue Park at 30 Temple Avenue is free to rent. No deposit is required. Some restrictions apply. b) Greenville Street Park can be rented with a refundable $500 security deposit. The deposit will be refunded if patrons leave the park in the condition they found it. Renters must sign a facility use guide document, with rules including no grills and no alcoholic beverages. The park is available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

 Coweta County Fairgrounds & Conference Center at 275 Pine Road in Newnan has space available for rental. The Golden Creek Room (seating capacity 125) is $300 daily with a $300 refundable deposit, the Sandy Creek Room (seating capacity 250) is $400 daily with a $400 refundable deposit and the New River Hall (seating capacity 450) is $500 daily with a $500 refundable deposit, according to the rental packet provided by Coweta County Fairgrounds. The theater and lawn costs $3a00 daily with a $150 refundable deposit. For all spaces, the refundable clean-up fee deposit will be returned if the facility is left clean. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance. Tables and chairs are provided, and rooms have sound systems. A reservation form/rental agreement must be completed. For more information, call (770) 254-2685. Check out our website for more information on LaTina’s Coweta’s Deal Finder article on weddings in Coweta County.

By Joan Doggrell Tracy Letts’ “August: Osage County,” opens March 13 and directed by Tony Daniel, portrays a family attempting to support each other in a crisis. Three sisters and their significant others come home to be with their mother when their father disappears. They soon learn that he has committed suicide. “In a time of crisis when a family member passes away, a family can rally together and try to be stronger, or it can tear itself apart,” said Artistic Director Tony Daniel. “In this case, the family tries its best, but it doesn’t work. Is this a show for everyone? Possibly not, because it deals with the subject matter very frankly. There is some mature language, and there are some mature themes, just as there are in life.” “We try to do popular shows,” said Daniel, “but at the same time, we don’t want to treat our audience like they can’t think. Some people like that challenge. As my grandfather would say, they want a little vinegar in their greens.” “This play is a new experience for me,” added Daniel. “You have to go to a dark place in your head. I’ve known of and been in those situations myself. You would think that a family could play nice for a week to honor and mourn the departed. But sometimes that doesn’t happen. The bonds of family can be tested and sometimes are broken forever.” The casting call for “August: Osage County” has drawn fresh talent to NTC. “Word got around that we were going to be one of the first companies in this area to do something this edgy,” said Daniel. “A lot of people were ready for it.” Three of those people are Eric Arvidson, Jay Freeman Cooper, and Lori Lewis. To a person, they were drawn to NTC by its reputation for excellence. “The talent in this show is incredible, and the way that Lori Lewis portrays the matriarch is even better than Meryl Streep’s version. Every actor in this show has made me step my game up. That’s impressive. I love this little town,” Cooper said. Other cast members include Tom Grandpre playing the patriarch Beverly Weston; Terri Ducker as daughter Barbara Fordham; Andi Laaker as daughter Ivy Weston; Rachel Wise as daughter Karen Weston; Betty Mitchell as Mattie Fae Aiken; Bert Lyons as Charlie Aiken; Katarina Carleo as Johnna Monevata; Robbie Kirkland as Little Charles Aiken; and Drew Turner as Steve Heidebrecht. The show opens on Thursday, March 13 and runs through March 23. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased through the NTC website,, or via phone by calling 770.683.6282. Performance times and ticket prices are as follows: March 13 and 20, 8:00 pm, $7.00 for all. March 14, 15, 21 and 22, 8:00 pm, $8 for children, $12 for students and seniors, $14 for adults. Niagara Bottling to invest $52 million in Coweta County with new facility

The Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) announced on Thursday, March 6 that Niagara Bottling, LLC, the nation’s largest private label bottled water supplier, will establish a new facility in Coweta County. The project, a $52 million investment, will create more than 40 jobs in the area and was a collaborative effort between Coweta County Devel-

opment Authority, GDEcD and Lee & Associates. GDEcD Project Manager Wylly Harrison assisted the project on behalf of Georgia. The 450,000-square-foot facility, expected for completion late 2014 in Shenandoah Industrial Park, will package and distribute private label water for its customers as well as the Niagara label. The facility will include one production line with a potential of up to four production lines in the future.

“We are very excited to welcome Niagara Bottling to Coweta County and to the growing list of quality industries in our community,” said Terry Daviston, chairman of the Coweta County Development Authority. “During the location process, the company was very clear that they wanted to locate their new facility in an innovative and dynamic community, and we are very pleased that they found what they were looking for in Coweta County.” – from Special Reports
