Meet Earlene Scott Owner of Scott’s Book Store ~ Serving Newnan since 1976 Is it possible for a local independent book seller to survive while competing against two large chain stores, an ailing economy and Internet sales? Scott’s Book Store on the South Court Square in downtown Newnan, is not just surviving but prospering. Why? A lady with a passion for reading and a commitment to her customers.

Earlene Scott has always enjoyed reading books - lots of them. “By the early seventies I had read everything of interest in the library”. Newnan had no book store at that time so she would have to drive to Atlanta to purchase the books she enjoyed reading. (Back then “Amazon” was just a river in South America!) Perhaps now the time was right for a book store in Newnan. In 1976, Earlene purchased a building on the corner of East Broad and Perry Streets which was once her father’s grocery store. Starting with only 600 square feet of retail space, Scott’s Book Store grew to the point that it became necessary to knock out walls to expand, and the small shop eventually doubled in size. “I was having to put books on the floor and we really needed a larger space.” By 1989 a bigger and better Scott’s Book Store moved to its present location on the South Court Square of downtown Newnan. Today’s store is a bright and comfortable shop - a pleasant place to find a good selection of books.

Employees know their regular customers by name and keep files on the books they like in case you need a special gift. And of course, gift wrapping is always free.

When asked how she manages to prosper and compete against the big chain stores, Earlene said two words: “Customer service.” Upon entering Scott’s Book Store you are greeted with a smile and “May I help you find something?” by her friendly staff. You might meet Tena Spier or Bonnie Reed, Sheryl Regan or Dorothy McLean who are there to make your book buying experience pleasant. Robyn Perkins and Miss Earlene’s granddaughter, Danielle Scott, also help when not in school. Employees know their regular customers by name and keep files on the books they like in case you need a special gift. And of course, gift wrapping is always free. If a customer is unable to come into the store, Earlene will meet them at their car with their book and she is happy to deliver to the hospital when needed. She proudly says, “You won’t see the chain book stores doing that!”

Authors seem to like independent book stores and when it is time to schedule a book signing, Scott’s is the place to be in Newnan. Earlene and her staff have hosted many notable writers over the years including Senator Herman Talmadge and Governor Zell Miller, Margaret Anne Barnes, Anne Rivers Siddons and Terry Kay, as well as Lewis Grizzard, Ludlow Porch, David Boyd and Coach Vince Dooley.

So, at the end of the day Earlene Scott knows what it takes to succeed with an independent book store in the face of big competition - she cares a lot about her customers and they keep coming back ... 28 South Court Square, Newnan • 770-253-2960

In this informative and interesting account, Coach Dooley describes his fifteen year curiosity with gardening and the creation of his spectacular home garden in Athens.

To Reduce Falls, Take Your Medicine Here’s yet another reason to take all the medication that our doctors prescribe: It can save us from falls. A study was done by a group with a rather interesting name: MOBILIZE Boston, which stands for Balance, Independent Living, Intellect and Zest in the Elderly of Boston. The group exists to study fall risk factors in seniors. More than 600 participants with an average age of 78 were studied after they’d had falls. They were all asked four questions: Do they ever forget? Are they ever careless? Do they ever stop taking medicine when they feel better? Do they ever stop taking medicine if they feel worse? Forty-eight percent were what it called “low adherence,” which means they weren’t taking their prescriptions as instructed. Those seniors had more than one fall per year, a full 50 percent more than the “high adherence” group. Over the course of the study, 376 of the participants reported more than 1,000 falls. The researchers suggested that doctors quiz their senior patients about whether they take all medication as prescribed. While that might be a good idea, I have an idea, too: We need to take responsibility for our health, and that includes taking medications when and as they’re prescribed. Granted, there are some medications with side effects. But a call to the doctor’s office often can result in getting a slightly different medicine. After all, falls are one of the quickest ways we can lose our independence. Here are some more steps you can take to limit the

No medicines kill the norovirus. Replacing fluid lost through diarrhea is the most important aspect of treatment. A homemade replacement solution is a mixture of half a teaspoon of salt, half a teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and four tablespoons of sugar in a quart (about one liter) of water. Commercial fluid replacements also are available, and drinks like Gatorade are suitable for infections that are not prostrating. Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) controls diarrhea. Immunity to norovirus is not long-lasting, so second infections occur. Many bacterial illnesses, like Salmonella, also lead to diarrhea, but that’s a subject for another day. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How can I get rid of bags under my eyes? — B.L.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Stomach Flu Isn’t the Flu DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have read your column for many years, but I haven’t seen anything about stomach flu. Will you write about it? Someone in my family of seven gets it every year, even in the summer. Does the flu shot protect you from it? — H.H. ANSWER: At one time, I conducted a crusade to erase the term “stomach (or intestinal) flu” from the English language. I didn’t get very far, so I gave up on it. Real flu — influenza — is a respiratory illness, not an intestinal illness. The flu shot provides protection only against true flu, not “stomach” flu. Four viruses are the usual culprits of stomach flu, and, for adults, the one that leads the pack is norovirus. Vomiting, diarrhea, fever and often headache are the main symptoms. It comes on suddenly, about one or two days after the virus enters the body. The sickness lasts only one to three days. A slight increase in number of cases occurs in the winter, but it comes in all seasons. Norovirus infections usually spare infants. Older people have the worst symptoms, and they are the ones who can die from an infection, but death is rare. This is the illness that sweeps through cruise ships and can infect an entire nursing home. It’s also common in mil-

ANSWER: In younger years, people don’t have bags under their eyes because a strong meshwork of tissue holds fat in place. With age, that meshwork loses strength, and fat pushes its way outward in the area under the eyes. That bulging fat is bags. I wish I had a simple answer for you. The only way to get rid of those bags is surgical removal. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Since I was 12, I have played tennis. I still do, four times a week, and I am 77. I have had to cut the time I play tennis in half because I’m getting short of breath. What kind of lung exercises can I do? — R.K. ANSWER: Forget lung exercises. See your doctor, and you should do that as soon as you can. Becoming breathless doing things you used to do without any trouble can be a sign of many serious illnesses. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. COLLECTING By Larry Cox Hummel Plate Q: I have a M.J. Hummel plate, “Apple Tree Boy and Girl — Little Companions,” that was issued in 1989. How much could I get for it? — Ellaline, Ormond Beach, Fla. A: Your plate was introduced by the Danbury Mint and is part of a series, all originally available by mail order for $32.45 each. The complete set sold for $389.40, which included a display rack. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m not afraid of dogs, but I worry about getting bitten sometimes. My older brother told me that only mean dogs will bite, but I’m not sure about that. How can I tell when a dog is about to bite? — Kerry in South Dakota

SHORT’S GRADING, lot clearing, grading, drainage, septic systems, sand, gravel, topsoil, fill dirt, removal of debris, clearing, logging. 1-877-306-1134

DEAR KERRY: Unfortunately, it’s not true that only “mean” dogs bite. Any dog can bite, even a gentle one, if it is in pain, startled or protecting something like its puppies or a toy. So, your instinct is right on: Don’t be afraid of dogs, but use caution and respect when interacting with them.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta How to Avoid Dog Bites

The U.S. Postal Service has some tips to follow to minimize the risk of being bitten: • Don’t run past a dog. The dog’s natural instinct is to chase and catch prey. • If a dog threatens you, don’t scream. Avoid eye contact. Try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, then back away slowly until the dog is out of sight. • Don’t approach a strange dog, especially one that’s tethered or confined. • While letter carriers are discouraged from petting animals, people who choose to pet dogs should always let a dog see and sniff them before petting the animal. • If you believe a dog is about to attack you, try to place something between yourself and the dog, such as a backpack or a bicycle. NASCAR THIS WEEK By Monte Dutton Reutimann: Better Late Than Never CONCORD, N.C. — Regardless of how the rest of the season is going, David Reutimann can count on Charlotte Motor Speedway for respite. Reutimann’s only Sprint Cup victory to date occurred in the track’s 2009 Coca-Cola 600. A year after that stirring upset, Reutimann matched his best finish of the current season by finishing fifth in NASCAR’s longest race.

At 40, Reutimann, from Zephyrhills, Fla., is only At age 40, David Reutimann got 112 races into his Cup a late start on his Sprint Cup career. He never made career, with his first full season it to NASCAR’s premier in 2008. (John Clark/NASCAR series full-time until This Week photo) 2008, though he competed in 26 races in ‘07. “A guy coming right out of high school and going Cup racing doesn’t appreciate it, maybe, as much as a guy like me who’s done it a little differently,” he said. “Nothing wrong with that. “Trust me. I wish I would’ve been 18 years old, coming out of high school, and had an opportunity to do Cup racing. I would’ve loved to have done that. It just wasn’t in the cards for me at the time. If you were 18 or 20 years old, or even mid-20s, you were too young. They wanted guys who were more seasoned because they didn’t tear up as many cars.”

“Gordon shows up, and all the rules changed,” said Reutimann. “Everybody wanted a young guy because he (Gordon) was producing on the race track. You’ve got a guy like Mark Martin. I’m not saying I’m a Mark Martin, but when you’re out there racing that guy and he’s kicking butt, it makes you feel really good. “It makes you feel like you maybe have a little bit of longevity. You never know. In the end, if you run well on the race track, they’ll probably keep you around no matter how old you get.” Is there still room for a late bloomer? Why, sure. “Forty is the new 30, anyway,” said Reutimann. “That’s what I’m going with.”
