Come by and meet

Meet G. T. Amell The old west just got a little closer to Coweta County last year when G.T. Amell rode into town – straight from Tombstone, AZ. Since his wife, Regina, has family in this area, they have chosen Newnan for their retirement. And we’re sure glad to have them here. Tombstone is a very small town but a hugely popular tourist destination. Dressing in period attire, G.T. and Regina mingled with, and greeted visitors, provided photo ops and welcomed them to their little town. And this provided a perfect opportunity to share their faith in God through a tract ministry to folks from many parts of the world.

G.T. Amell will be at

Wildflower Leather Saturday, August 17th with some of his portraits

G.T. seems to be the “authority” when it comes to western movies. He can tell you what star was in which movie while adding some little-known facts to the conversation. “A good western must include the “Five S’s”, says G.T. “Scenery, sheriff, stagecoach, sweetheart and saloon.” But his real “God given” talent as an artist, combined with his love of the old west, has led to the creation of a group of exquisite graphite portraits featuring some of the most famous Cowboy movie stars ever. It starts with Buck Jones and goes through Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott with the likes of Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper, John Wayne and Glenn Ford. His portraits are available for purchase. For information on how to get in touch with Mr. Amell, you can email us here at info@thecowetashopper.com. So, if you see a “proper” western gentleman sporting a great looking mustache, and has an attractive lady on his arm, it’s probably G.T. and Regina Amell. And let’s make them feel welcome to our great community!

S

ince this is “back to school” season, I decided to write my article about this important first day – a day of renewing some old friendships, meeting the new teachers, finding your locker and showing your peers that you are on top of your game. The game of fashion and style and popularity. Students are “marking their territory” and the teachers are, too – drawing a line in the sand of discipline. (At least for the first few days) But John Winters beat me to it with his interesting back to school article in The Times Herald. So I suppose I’ll have to fall back on a subject that I know best – the first day of school for little Joey Williams. Toward the end of the first grade, my family moved, requiring me to attend the old Atkinson School, a big two story brick building which was getting quite tired and would be replaced the following year. Upon arrival that first day, the principal introduced me to my new second grade class! “But I’m in the first grade”, I quickly reported. Nothing I said convinced the teacher that the school had made a mistake. Perhaps I looked wiser than my years, or taller, or something. But I chose to believe it was what I was wearing – my new Roy Rogers cowboy suit, including hat and guns. (Cap pistols, of course). I was “the Man”! When the students took turns reading aloud, I didn’t know the words. When we were told to write several sentences on our paper and “sign” our name at the bottom, I immediately enlightened the teacher, “I can’t write sentences but I can “print” my name at the top! After two or three hours of this “under-achievement”, I was finally escorted to Miss King’s first grade class. Having been mistaken for an older man, I was “lookin’ good and walkin’ tall” in my new cowboy outfit. Miss King suggested I remove my hat and leave the guns in the hall. But I was still full of pride and arrogance. I continued to be “the man”, or so I thought. During the afternoon recess, I stopped by the restroom. That’s when that “bubble of pride” burst like a cheap balloon! My pant zipper on that magnificent cowboy outfit came off the track and all attempts to get it back on failed, leaving me feeling somewhat “exposed”! Even that little tab on the zipper broke off. There could be only one “plan of action” – pretending nothing had happened and “covering up” the problem. I went back in the class, holding my hands over the offending opening, but not feeling quite as “tall and handsome”. When class was over, I walked out, holding my new “leather” book satchel just below my waist, until I could get home and just throw that cowboy outfit away - guns, hat and zipper. I’ve tried to think of what lesson in life I may have learned from that unusual first day. Number three: Don’t let someone talk you in to doing something that is far beyond your ability. Number two: Don’t pretend to look and act like someone you’re not. You will be “All Hat and No Cattle”. Number one: Never buy a poor quality, Roy Rogers, cowboy suit with a cheap zipper. It could “show who you really are” - without notice!

oe J

Post Script: Actually, I never learned from those mistakes. I still end up doing things I’m told I can’t do, and I may still be all hat and no cattle. But I will never, ever wear a silly Roy Rogers cowboy suit again. They no longer make them in my size!

4 Ways to Create a “Cool” Home School may have started, but the calendar and weather still says it’s summertime. I don’t know about anywhere else in the world, but here in the SOUTH, we call it Dog Days. One of the definitions when I “googled” dog days of summer had this: Dog Days 1. The hot, sultry period of summer between early July and early September. 2. A period of stagnation. Anyway you define it, it means Hot Weather! Recently our main central A/C unit died on us. In June! Before the monsoons hit! It was Hot! Central AC has spoiled us and I know my ancestors lived without central A/C but what can I say, I’m spoiled. I had to get creative about how we were to remain cool while the new unit was being ordered, and get on the schedule for the replacement. 2 WEEKS! Did I say it was Hot? Of course, opening the windows, using the ceiling fans and floor fans as well as whole house fan to pull any cool morning air through was a big part of staying cooler, but when the heat becomes oppressive, it’s nice to add some lightness and brightness indoors with décor. Here are some of my favorite ways to accomplish a “cool” décor for hot days: 1. Area Rugs. Roll them up and store them away. Let the bare floors shine! If you can’t bring yourself to have a bare floor, then exchange the fuzzy, wooly, soft rug for a flat weave like a natural jute, or an indoor/outdoor rug. It will instantly lift the heaviness of the room. 2. Windows Treatments. Removing heavy drapes and replacing them with white or ivory drapes, blinds or sheers will brighten a room and still help control any direct sunlight that may heat up a room. 3. Bedding. Heavy dark bedding is great for a cozy look in the cold months, but in the heat of the year, exchange them for lighter weight and colors to create a cool breeze feeling in your home. I like to use white sheets as my topper because they are so easy to wash and put back on the bed. Or try using a light duvet cover without the comforter inside during the hot months for an inexpensive solution. 4. Accessories. Reduce the amount of accessories for the summer to create empty table top space. Then bring in a few cool blue, green and turquoise pillows, light throws and accessories to sprinkle a little bit of summer fun throughout the house. We survived the 2 weeks and are enjoying the cool air that it artificially produced to make us comfortable, but seeing my window treatments and bedding at the end of the bed flowing in the breeze of the ceiling fans also helps keep me cool. Coweta county is becoming known not only for the creativity of its artists but also for its creative ways in displaying its arts, such as visual art exhibits on the walls of its performing arts centre and of its Espresso Lane Coffee Shop. The latest example of this is books by Coweta’s authors being sold at a new pharmacy in Newnan called The Newnan Health Mart in a special spot called the “Reading Corner”. (See the photo below and in attachment). Any Coweta author can have his books displayed in this Reading Corner by contacting the owners, Jan and Suzette Smit, either by coming in to their pharmacy located at 15 Baker Road in Newnan or by phoning them at 770-683-6771. At present there are fifteen Coweta authors whose books are displayed there: Swanee Ballman, Tamala Callaway, Jerry Hampton, Lynda Jane Jackson, Lenny Fulz, James Cambas, Suzette Smit, Holly Moulder, Suzanne Field, Eugene Franckowiak, April Miller, Joe Dwyer, Linda Jennings, Carla Cook Smith, and Leigh Michael Hartmann. The books are sold by the pharmacy, which keeps 20% and gives the other 80% to the author.

CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Tire Inflation (part 2) … Two other important issues effected by the air pressure in your vehicle’s tires besides the quality of the ride and dynamic control is tire wear and load capacity. Tires wear because of the loss of rubber due to the friction between the tire and the road surface. An under-inflated tire will generate more heat from friction and will wear away the rubber sooner. An over-inflated tire will do the same but with a different wear pattern on the tread. The part of the contact patch or tire tread that wears faster than expected due to incorrect inflation will vary with air pressure and other suspension adjustments such as wheel balance, alignment, and toein and the condition of shock absorbers and other suspension components. The ability of your tires to carry a load, just the weight of your passengers, not to mention a trunk or roof rack full of stuff, is also a function of tire inflation. Quite often an under or over inflated tire will not be noticeable in normal driving. It is when you are in a critical situation such as panic braking, hydroplaning or sharp turning that improperly inflated tires will likely be evident. Then, it’s too late. Earlier, I mentioned five tires. Yes, there is another one either the same size as the other four or a special smaller size called a spare tire. Some new cars don’t have a spare tire at all but have four run-flat tires and come with a can of pressurized air and sealer goop to inflate rather than change a flat tire. You can save yourself a lot of hassle, time, and money if you know how to PROPERLY AND SAFELY change a flat tire. But, a flat spare tire does you no good. I know it’s inconvenient, but check its inflation pressure as well. Instructions to change a flat tire are always in that ever valuable Owner’s Manual or some-

where in the trunk or near the jack. Many newer cars have air pressure monitoring systems built into the wheels and a computer display on the dashboard. These systems are sometimes problematic, but basically inform you when a tire contains less air than is recommended. More sophisticated systems tell you exactly which tire is low. The best systems tell you how many PSI is in each tire real time. Still, there is nothing as good as or reliable as an informed owner glancing at the tires every once in a while to see if one may be getting low despite no news from the computerized system. Know what I mean? You add air the same way as in a non monitored system. Most of that is pretty complicated for the average driver to keep up with, so have a competent mechanic or repair shop take care of your car for you. But at least you can keep your tires properly inflated. Be comfortable. Be in control. Be smart. Be safe.

A modern dashboard computer readout of tire pressures.

“Victory At All Costs” August 17 “Victory At All Costs” is a World War II-themed program hosted by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society at the new McRitchie-Hollis Museum, 74 Jackson Street, Newnan. Admission is $5 per adult and $2 per student. This program is free for members of the Historical Society. This family-friendly program, slated for 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will feature the Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing, 1940s live music by Bombshells United: Singing American Pinups, a “1940s Beauty School,” World War II living history exhibits, artifact displays, and an interactive program on World War II propaganda. “Come experience World War II through a variety of activities, living history, music, and more,” said Joanna Arrieta, Executive Director of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society. “We will be offering a sneak peek at our new World War II exhibit that will debut later this year,” she said. The exhibition, when completed later this year, will encompass both floors of the newly restored McRitchie-Hollis Museum and feature information about daily life on the “home front” in the 1940s as well as details about the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the wars in Europe and the Pacific, the Holocaust, and the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Arrieta said she is especially excited about the involvement of the CAF Dixie Wing at this special event. As the Georgia chapter of the Commemorative Air Force, the CAF Dixie Wing is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving WWII aircraft and teaching WWII history. The CAF Dixie Wing describes itself as “a resource for Atlanta area citizens, teachers, home schoolers, scout troops, and local youth organizations” to learn more about World War II, and especially the role of air power in winning the war. The CAF Dixie Wing will bring World War II-era vehicles, uniforms, equipment, and weapons to illustrate life on the battlefront. The involvement of the CAF Dixie Wing, local 1940s “beauty school” specialist Christi Polk, local veterans, and graduate students from the University of West Georgia Center for Public History will ensure that “Victory at all Costs” will have something for everyone. Bombshells United will be providing live music with impressions of Betty Grable, Judy Garland, and Rita Hayworth. Local artifact exhibits that will be displayed, such as James Johnson’s “In Color: The Men and Women of World War II”, add unique glimpses into the lives of the “greatest generation”. Fun hands-on activities for children are also planned and snow cones will be available for purchase from the Frigid Frog. “This family-friendly event will provide interactive opportunities to explore what life was like in the 1940s,” she said. “We hope to see a lot of people there!” Sponsorship for this program is provided by Toyota of Newnan.

Gary Sikes Folks pay attention ~and for those of you who don’t get it the first time, read it again … it’s important. Our 3 high schools are just about to crank up the 2013 Fall football campaign and I have some interesting tidbits to share. I had a chance to speak with each of our head coaches about opening day and the following is a recap of what each of them had to say.

Mike McDonald of the Newnan Cougars, opened with Marietta away last year and was able to win the game, he is cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season and will open with the same team at home this year. The Cougars will host Marietta one week earlier than EC or NG ~ they open at home on Aug 23rd and folks in and around the region seem to think they are the team to beat in region 3. Next up I talked with the captain of the NG Viking ship head coach To m m y Wa l b e r n . The Vikings opened away last year as well but will play the same team at home this year. On the road last year they lost to Heritage of Conyers by a field goal and the head man at Northgate is hoping to exact some revenge this year. He says he can’t promise anything but does hope to be a play-off team again this Fall. He lost a lot of players on both sides of the ball and has some big shoes to fill. However, since taking over the reins at NG, the Head man has done an outstanding job and there is no reason to think that this year will be any different than in the past.

And next up comes the Indians of East Coweta. Opening against Stockbridge away last year and with a win, head man Clint Wade hopes he can repeat. He has made some changes to his coaching staff which he is hoping will make the difference in the season for this Fall vs the one he had last year. Coach Wade is quick to tell that nobody hated the outcome of the 2012 season as much as he did and says it will not happen this year. However, he did lose the best defensive end and pass rusher when Tristen Mann went down with a knee injury which will keep him out for the season. Mann is a Junior so he will have one more year to impress the college scouts. Both the Vikings and the Indians will open at home on August 30th ~ kick off for both teams will be 7:30 pm so we all have time to make our plans accordingly. And the next column will bring you the hi-lites from the GT/Elon game, from the Ga. Dome the results of the Va. Tech Hokies vs the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the night cap Georgia Bulldogs will travel to Death Valley Jr. to be hosted by the Tigers of Clemson. (My most humble opinion, this will be the best game of the day. Both the Dawgs and the Tigers are explosive on the offensive side of the ball so I just don’t think that 30 points will win this game. It will take 38) Can you just smell football season? Pictured top left Indians head coach Clint Wade, top right Vikings head coach Tommy Walbern and bottom left is Cougar head man Mike McDonald. Hold on folks we are off and running so keep you eye out for the Shopper each week because we will be here with reports for you.
