t an earlier time in the history of Coweta County, downtown Newnan was the center of commerce – the hub of activity. We actually called it “up town”, as downtown was reserved for places like New York or Atlanta. So, within about a two block area of the court house, one could buy a car, go bowling, see a movie, eat, buy medicine or clothing or hardware, cash a check, catch a Greyhound bus out of town, or spend the night in our county jail. It’s still a nice area, although in a different way, and I hope it will remain healthy for many more years. One of my more vivid memories of the “square” is of Alexander’s Barber Shop located on the south of, and facing, the courthouse. My father would take me there when we both needed a haircut and I would go back, on and off, through my teenage years. There were three huge (to me) metal and leather chairs that would swivel, recline or go up and down. Two of those chairs were reserved for owners Robert Alexander and his father. The third was for an additional employee. This was not a beauty parlor and they didn’t offer to design or style your hair, and they didn’t take appointments. Men walked in, sat down, and discussed fishing or hunting or politics while waiting for their regular barber. Their menu include a shave, haircut, your favorite hair tonic, and a shoeshine. And they would sometimes give you that special, ten-second massage of your shoulders and neck with a vibrating machine attached to the top of their hand. You probably couldn’t have spent more than two or three dollars for the whole shebang! All cuts were about the same – little or no hair around the ears and a little bit longer on top. There were three large ceiling fans to condition the space, a framed print of dogs playing poker, and a very ornate metal cash register on a stand. But it was that curtain at the rear of this small shop which surely led to some dark, unknown place that fueled my 5 year old imagination. What could be back there, and why would the barbers sometimes go in and quickly close the curtain behind them? Perhaps there was a dead body or two, or a robber hiding in wait. I was too afraid to ask! Things are different now, and that’s OK. Folks don’t really need to “go up town” to do their shopping. The bowling alley is gone and so is the bus station. But thanks to Main Street Newnan, the square area is once again a popular destination, although for different reasons. The big box stores and strip malls are much needed, but I hope we can continue to preserve the architecture and culture that once made Newnan’s court square the hub of commerce for Coweta County.

Post Script: As adults, we have a different perspective of earlier events. For over 25 years I was a neighbor of Robert Alexander and saw him walking almost every day. He was the husband of the talented artist, Harriet Alexander who we fondly remember. And after 60 years, I have solved the mystery of “The curtain”. It separated a room which contained a bathroom, mop bucket and broom, and a couple of storage shelves. No bank robbers. No dead bodies. I sure hope I will never have to allow my age to retard my vivid imagination.

My Terminal Illness

hen I was seven years old I convinced myself that I had leukemia. I watched a special hour-long episode of Different Strokes where a seemingly healthy child about my age was diagnosed with the disease. That was all it took – if he could catch it for no apparent reason, then I too was a likely candidate.

by the fingernail lodged in my throat. For a moment I forgot all about my leukemia until I looked up and saw the concern on his face.

The next day at school I was very quiet in class and kept my head down during story time. I refused to participate in gym class for fear that my condition would worsen. I told the teachers I was sick, but did not reveal the complexity of my condition. One of the teachers sent me to the principal’s office for proof of my sickness. When the thermometer read normal I shrugged my shoulders, but continued to cry. The disease was not registering in my system yet I thought. The principal made me eat a bowl of Corn Flakes, refusing to believe that I was not hungry.

“I’m here to talk about your feelings, and why you have been blue lately,” he said. I kept looking at him skeptically, while rubbing at my throat to coax the fingernail down. He tilted his head and raised his eyebrows giving the signature look of an adult who expects an answer.

“I guess you’re wondering why you’re here,” he said. I looked at him blankly, offering no opinions even though his mission was clear to me.

“There’s a fingernail stuck in my throat,” I said as I watched through my overgrown bangs for his reaction and possible medical advice.

He leaned back in his chair and tapped his pen on the desk. “That must be very painful,” he said with no real trace of concern. No advice, no phone call to his office to report this new development, just an ordinary reaction as if I simply showed him a paper cut. That was my first indication that this was not really a doctor. A real doctor would be concerned. This man clearly had no idea about breathing This was it; someone was here to break obstructions or stomach lacerations caused the news to me, probably the doctor himself by the swallowing of a fingernail. I decided after reviewing my physical file. “We didn’t to get to the heart of the matter. notice it at first,” he would say, “but your body “Do you know Dr. Pelton? He’s my Doctor,” is laden with leukemia.” I stood up slowly, I said. with my head hung and walked toward the “No, honey, I don’t know him, I’m not that office alongside the principal. She tried to kind of a Doctor. I’m a Psychologist,” he said comfort me, telling me I was not in trouble, drawing the word out slowly, punctuating but I knew the truth, I could feel the pity every syllable for me to hear. and it annoyed me coming from a woman Aha! I knew it; he was not a real who pushes Corn Flakes on terminally ill Doctor! children. We talked for a while about my family, friends, schoolwork, all the things that typically cause a child to withdraw and cry in class for four days straight. I never once mentioned my leukemia because I figured out by then I must not be sick in that way. I was just crazy I guess. What a relief; I wasn’t going to die an untimely death after all, unless, of course, I suffered internal bleeding from the fingernail I had swallowed. I think I may have seen something like that on a special hour-long episode of The Facts of Life.

Surely any obstruction to my breathing could not be good for my leukemia.

This continued for several days and I felt that it was a matter of time before my parents or one of the teachers would announce the news of my discovered disease. Suddenly, while sitting cross-legged in reading group with my head in my hands, it happened. “Kelli Bowman,” the principal announced from the entry of our classroom, “You need to come to the office. There’s someone here to see you.”

I chewed nervously at my fingernails as we entered the office. A man in a suit sat behind the desk usually occupied by the office secretary. “Hi Kelli,” he said in a pleasant voice reserved for such occasions as the unveiling of your terminal illness. “I’m Dr. Cooper,” he announced. As he said this I sucked in air and swallowed a fingernail that I had been chewing. I coughed with such force he leaned over the desk and patted me on the back. After gaining my composure, I slumped into the seat across from him. My head was spinning; I remained occupied

Steve Horton, founder and owner of The Coweta County Shopper 19892008, died recently in Kentucky. Our thoughts are with Darlene, Brian, Larry, Nick and their families. This month The Shopper is beginning its 25th year in business. We’d like to remember Steve and thank all the former employees and advertisers for 24 great years!

There’s been innumerable changes since Steve and Darlene Horton moved to Newnan in 1989 and started a small direct mail advertising business in their Smokey Road home. There’s been more than half a dozen locations, many sales people and office personnel throughout the years. There were a lot of all night work sessions with a couple of Mac Plus computers with 9 inch monochrome screens, cut and paste with hot wax, long road trips delivering page layouts to the press in South Georgia, waiting on press run and the long ride back to the Newnan post office. It started as a small family run business with sons Brian and Larry putting in time over the years. Steve, a former pharmaceutical sales rep, was the top salesman for a number of years. Scott Shefelton was salesman, ad builder and office manager for 20+ years. His brother in law Rusty is still selling ads - 24+ years. Steve retired in 2009 and son Larry ran things for a while. Joe Williams bought The Shopper in 2010, changed the name to The Coweta Shopper and added some local content with The Armchair Gardener, What’s In Your Garage, Employee Spotlights, and interesting articles from time to time on locals. “Spring Awakening,” opening July 25, speaks directly to today’s teens. This 2007 Tony Award-winning Broadway rock musical by Duncan Sheik and Steve Sater is based on a late nineteenth century play by Frank Wedekind depicting German parents extending childhood long past the time when nature dictated it was over. They essentially abandoned their children to cope with awakening sexuality without knowledge or support of any kind. “Spring Awakening” is both edgy and relevant. “Sheik and Sater have taken the Frank Wedekind story, made the language more accessible, and added very modern music,” said Director Mandy Mitchell. “Our stage set is almost a playground. We’re removing the curtains from the stage. There will be a swing, monkey bars, and a push-type merry-go-round. The setting will emphasize the containment of the children in a child-like area even though they are of high school and college age.” The tragic situations and strong language are inappropriate for young children, but mature teens will understand and empathize. A dancer, singer, actor and director, Mandy Mitchell is one of the talented and dedicated volunteers that are the heart and soul of NTC. Bruce Patterson, who teaches music at Arnall Middle School, is the show’s music director. Susan Babcock, the show’s talented choreographer, has recently moved to Newnan and works for the Georgia Academy of Dance. To purchase tickets, and for show dates and times, visit Newnan Theatre Company’s web site at or visit the box office before or after any performance. The theatre is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue. H July 24, 2013 H The Coweta Shopper H Page 15

CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Tire Inflation (part 1) … When considering the safe and comfortable operation of your car or truck, one of the strongest influences is the outside environment in which you are driving. A major variable in that environment is the contact your vehicle has with the road. If you have ever driven on ice, through water, or in sand or mud, you know what I am talking about. The lower amount of traction those surfaces provide drastically effects the handling, safety, and comfort of your ride. Critical aspects of driving, such as accelerating, turning, riding comfortably or uncomfortably and most importantly stopping, all depend on what is called the tire contact patch or the amount and the shape – the “footprint” - of tire rubber that is in contact with the road surface.

We Have A Warm Heart For Cold Noses

“Pet Resort & Spa”

22 Jefferson Street, Downtown Newnan, Next to Pizza Hut Accepting Pet Food Donations for One Roof

Also realize that the feeling you get from the surface you are driving on is mostly a function of your only contact with that surface – your tires! Some of the tire characteristics that affect ride quality are the composition of the rubber, the width and height of the tire, the tread pattern, and tread depth, and, of course, the pressure of the air inside the tires. Tire air pressure is the topic of our discussion this time around.

ual. Just look at the label on the driver’s door jam or door post of your vehicle. There, by law, is a listing of what air pressure is recommended for the front and rear tires of your vehicle. Like so many other things in life, too much is not good and too little is not good either. The amount listed on the label is just right. The inflation pressure that is molded into the sidewall of the tire is the maximum the tire will safely hold. It is not the recommended pressure. Any given tire of a specific size can be used on many different vehicles so the pressure referenced on the tire is not specific to any particular car. The pressures on the door jamb label are specific to your car regardless of what size, style, and brand of tire you are using. As the operator and controller of that 4000 pound weapon on wheels, it is your responsibility to maintain your vehicle in safe operating condition. Tire pressures are one of the easiest safety settings to understand and maintain.

In order to drive within the engineered parameters of your vehicle and experience the ride characteristics you expect from it, you need to insure that the air pressure in all the tires is set at what the people who designed the car, the tires, and the roads have specified. The good news is that it is simpler than ever to do this. You don’t even have to wade through that confusing Owner’s Man-

Door jamb label showing tire pressures

40 Years Experience !

The Armchair Gardener “Something Old, Some New,

Something Blue” Demotoi, Lanarth, Mariesii ~ is that French? Yes, it surely is ~ French Hydrangea that is. Hydrangea is one of our most beloved old Southern summer shrubs. These deciduous shrubs are kin in the Hydrangeaceae family. There are many types of hydrangeas. Here are a few: “Annabelle” - H. arborescens is a very hardy selection with white blooms turning pale green later. French hydrangea ~ H. macrophylla has countless selections including “Nikko Blue” which has consistently reliable blue blooms. Other French or Bigleaf hydrangeas bloom white, pink, purple, or red. Some types can be encouraged to blue color by adding aluminum sulfate or pink color by adding lime to the soil. It is the soil pH (acid or alkaline) that determines the color of those types. “Snowflake” - H. quercifolia, or Oakleaf Hydrangea, has white blooms that turn pinkish in the Fall. Its leaves turn a handsome bronze and reddish color in Fall. “Tardiva” - H. paniculata - also known as the Pee Gee hydrangea blooms later and is a good doer. Now there are numerous new choices - such as “Endless Summer” - that are repeat bloomers. They bloom on old and new wood. Hydrangeas are easy care choices for the garden or in large containers. They prefer good, welldrained soil and regular water along with some shade in the afternoon. Prune French hydrangeas by the end of July to avoid losing next year’s blooms. Hydrangea arborescens blooms on new growth, so prune in the dormant stage. The repeat blooming types can be pruned anytime. To dry, cut hydrangeas just after they change color and begin to feel paper-like. Use water about half way up stems and allow it to evaporate (can add fabric dye).

Folks in this week’s tribute to our local heroes, coaches, and athletes I am paying homage to one of the most loyal fans that the Newnan Cougars and the Georgia Tech Yellow-Jackets ever had and it will be a while before another one comes along. I am referring to Danny “BOOMER’ Bishop. Boomer lead what some might call a hard life, he had no family to speak of except his Grandmother which is who he lived with, he walked everywhere he went unless it was an out of town game then folks like the late Johnny Brown, or one of the Crain family ~ either Joe Sr. or Jr. ~ would pick him up and take him to the event and then home again. Now to some, this was hard but to Boomer it was heaven. He had his Newnan Cougars (whom he loved with a passion, then his Yellow Jackets and in a distant 3rd the Indians of East Coweta). Every time I would run into him anywhere ~ the street corner, at Kroger ~ the first words spoke were how are the Indians going to look this Fall? If he had an enemy I don’t know who it could be. I do however know who his friends were and that would be the entire community of Newnan and Coweta county. Boomer lost his battle with cancer some few weeks ago and was buried compliments of a few friends and John Davidson of McKoon’s funeral home. This was how he was loved in our community and he is missed and will be for a long time. In fact, with the upcoming football season, it is hard to imagine him not being at the

games. The following are a few quotes and notables from some of his friends. “I would would love to own a I  BOOMER t-shirt.” “Boomer is in room #719 at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He was given 3 months to live this morning and will be moving to hospice care very soon. If you can, go see him. He’s in good spirits but he’s not the same ole Boomer we all know and love. He’s missed 6 Newnan baseball games already and that seems to be hurting him more than the pain of the cancer.” “Praying for Boomer this morning.” And the lists goes on and on ~ 3,200 plus visits to the site. If you get a chance, go to the Danny “Boomer” Bishiop fan page on Facebook and you will see just much he was loved and appreciated in and around our community. I am proud to have known Boomer and called him friend.

September 21 …

Masterworks Chorale Seeking New Members for Fall Season By Joan Doggrell Masterworks Chorale’s 2013 fall rehearsal schedule begins the second week of August. If you’d like to join this distinguished group, audition opportunities are available through the month of July and the first week of August. Call Artistic Director Kathy Bizarth at 770-846-8278 or contact her at for an appointment. At its first fall concert, Masterworks will premiere a work written by Andrew Smith, who won a young composers competition this past fall. Smith is a student at Columbus State University and a former Newnan High School student. The concert will feature the Masterworks’ scholarship winner as well – a tradition for the first concert of the season. In March of 2014, Masterworks will perform a commissioned piece by Dr. John Ratledge to celebrate its 10th anniversary. Throughout the season, the Centre Masterworks Youth Chorale (CMYC), under the direction of Millie Lanier Turek, will join Masterworks in several concerts as the young singers prepare for their role as ambassadors from the city of Newnan to Scotland. Since its founding in 2003, Masterworks has presented at least three performances annually. One performance is always a master work that challenges and inspires singers and audiences alike. Masterworks’ mission is to foster and share the art of choral music and to serve the community through the pursuit of choral excellence in choral repertoire and performance. Made up of residents 18 years and older of Coweta County and surrounding areas, the Chorale has furthered the art of singing exceptional choral music through rehearsal and performance of standard literature of quality and interest. It has reached audiences of several hundreds and is thriving through involvement with the community and schools of the area. The chorus also has been in workshop with internationally known choral conductors, most recently Dr. Tim Seelig of Dallas, Texas, and Joseph Martin, who is also a renowned composer. In March of last year, Composer Martin personally conducted Masterworks in a concert of his own works. For more information about Masterworks Chorale, visit
