ear Santa Claus,
I realize you haven’t heard from me in quite a while – 1955 to be exact. That was the year my mom told me some things about you that I didn’t want to believe. I was cut to the quick and have remained crestfallen for almost sixty years. Is it OK with you if we start over and forget the old days? I will if you will. Although I probably want everything, I don’t really need much of anything. I’ve been quite blessed, so I think I’ll just limit my request this year to a stocking full of fruit. That’s what I remember you leaving me in the old days, in addition to that great electric train, of course. There was a stocking hung on the mantel with my name printed in silver glitter. You filled it to the top with a variety of fruits and nuts, but I hardly noticed it until after I had played with my new toys. So this year, sir, I just need the fruit. Not your regular stuff but a special kind I read about. In my Bible, there’s a book called Galatians. You’ll need to read verses 22 and 23 of chapter 5 to see what I’m asking you to bring. The fruit of Love, Joy and Peace might help clear out my mind’s cobwebs of accumulated frustration and anxiety. The fruit of Kindness, Patience and Gentleness could enable me to encourage others, while trying to understand their frustrations and anxieties. And finally, the fruit of Goodness, Faithfulness and Self-Control may be just what I need to “get movin” in a direction toward success, using the talents and abilities I’ve been given. I know I’ve been a “stinker” for a long time, so you’ll probably find my name on your “inactive” list. But if you will give me another chance - just one more time, I’ll promise to (try to) be better next year, And perhaps this stocking of spiritual fruit can even help a “stinker” like me!

Brandpoint Photo Finding the “perfect” gift can sometimes be a frustrating journey.
Gift-giving tips for those people who have everything n Here in Coweta County, finding the perfect gift for a loved one can be difficult at any time of year, but no time places more stress on finding a great gift than during the Christmas season. It goes beyond finding the “perfect” gift for special days and holidays to giving something that reflects your affection or appreciation for the gifts you’ve received over time from that individual. Maybe you’re looking for a gift for that uncle who never missed an important event in your life. The one who cheered you along as you got married, had babies, suffered losses. In his 60s now, he buys what he needs and appreciates everything. Maybe your sister is the best sister in the world. She’s always there when you need a hug or a nudge. She’s crazy busy with her family and would just like one evening where someone else would take care of the dinner plans. Or you have a grandma who says exactly what she thinks at all times – for better and worse. Yet everyone loves and respects the wisdom she shares at every family gathering. Her needs are few but she loves it when you pop in on the weekend for a meal and a chat. Do these people sound familiar? There are many ways you can say, “thank you,” to these and other special people in your life. Food is probably the best gift you can give people who have everything because they will be able to eat it, share it and enjoy it with others. Here in Coweta County, you can always choose a gift card or gift certificate from their favorite local dining establishment. That way, your loved one can pick a gift that will be a perfect reminder of just how much you care about them. Feel free to check out some of our recent advertisers in The Coweta Shopper for that “perfect” food gift. Our advertisers include Moe’s Southwest Grill (1111 Bullsboro Drive) ... Chylaca’s Mexican Restaurant and Grill (20 Bullsboro Drive or 3154 Highway 34 East) ... Joe Friday’s Brick Oven Pizza (3500 Highway 34 East) ... H.J. Wings & Things (31 Market Square in SummerGrove) ... A Taste For Homemade (282 Bullsboro Drive) .... and/or Twisted Peelz (300 Bullsboro Drive). If your loved one is far away, a wide selection of food gift catalogs are available all year long to stir your curiosity and provide inspiration. The Kansas City Steak Company quickly comes to mind as a long-standing tradition for gift-giving and has great food options for those hard-to-shop-for-people in your life. Want to create a special combination package? Check out their favorite gift pack options for inspiration. So in the next week-or-so when it’s time to think about giving that perfect gift to someone who has everything, think food. It’s a winner every time. – Brandpoint
Hosting a tree-trimming party is one of the easiest ways to have a fun gathering for family and friends while getting some of your holiday decorating done. It's best to schedule your party early in December, before the holiday crush of shopping and holiday events are in full force. If possible, give your guests at least two to four weeks notice. Preparing for the party: —Set up your tree and string it with lights before your guests arrive. Clear out the area around the tree so everyone has easy access to hang the ornaments. —Add festive garlands or pinecone roping around the fireplace, over the doors and throughout the house. Add colorful ornaments in decorative glass bowls and vases and place them around the room. Scatter wrapped Christmas candies on the tables. —Place a few cinnamon sticks or 2 tablespoons of cinnamon, 2 tablespoons of vanilla and 3 cups of water in a pot and bring it to a boil to add a holiday aroma to your home. Play your favorite holiday music to set the mood. —Fill an assortment of baskets, tins or decorative boxes with red, green, gold or white tissue paper or colorful shredded paper and carefully place your ornaments in the baskets, along with hooks or ribbon to hang them on the tree. If your ornament collection includes treasured heirlooms, hang them yourself before guests arrive or wait to hang them until after they've left. —Ask your guests to decorate an ornament or two and hang them on the tree. Have the kids cut out ornaments from construction paper and decorate the front with markers, sticker and glitter. You also can make and bake your own ornaments (see recipes below for Cinnamon Dough and Salt Dough Ornaments), or you can buy plain wooden ornaments from a craft store. Have your guests decorate the
It will take a lot of thread for the popcorn garland to cover an entire tree. It's best to slide the piece of popcorn or cranberry to the end of the thread to prevent knots. Make sure that it is well-secured, so that popcorn or cranberries won't fall off, and then gently cut the thread. —Set a table with simple finger foods and appetizers with a winter or Christmas theme or purchase platters from your local grocery store or gourmet deli. —Serve a variety of drinks, including hot chocolate, coffee, eggnog, cider punch and water. —Purchase some mini Christmas stockings as parting gifts, and fill them with a selection of holiday chocolates or peppermint sticks, or for the children, a Christmas puzzle or holiday coloring book with crayons. Remember, relax, have fun, make memories and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Newnan Firefighter Makes his Stage Debut in NTC’s “Annie” By Joan Doggrell
Fireman Rodney Scott made his first appearance on the NTC stage on December 5, opening night for “Annie,” which is “one of the most family friendly shows we’ve done in a long time,” said Artistic Director Tony Daniel. “I was a tad nervous at first,” said Scott. “But the cast members knew it was going to be my first time in front of a live audience. They built up my confidence so that when I went out on stage, it was surreal, but confidence overcame nervousness. We had an awesome time.” Daniel is thrilled that Fireman Scott chose to audition for “Annie.” “He responded to our community outreach to the various public service groups in Newnan – the Sheriff’s deputies, ambulance drivers, firemen, police. Some people feel that being on stage is outside of their comfort zone, but Scott wanted to try it. He’s learned basic dance steps, at least one song, and from what I’ve witnessed, he’s having a good time doing it. Who knows, we may have our own singing and dancing fire staff! “ Scott graduated from Newnan High, served in the military, and then came back to Newnan. “I’ve always been a part of Newnan,” he said. “When I signed up for the firefighter service I did it to help the community, not just to fight fire. I signed up to be a public figure. It’s part of what we firefighters do. At the same time, I’d had that acting bug ever since the seventh grade.” “Another reason I got involved was for my two sons, both in the 10th grade. They play sports. I have a hard time trying to get them to venture out beyond sports. I figured if I joined this, it would let them see there are way more avenues for your creativity than just sports. The likelihood of your making it in the NBA or the NFL is very slim. You may find you have additional talents by joining other groups and finding out just where your creative niche is. If they see me doing this, maybe they’ll mimic what I’m doing. I’m trying to show them instead of just tell them.” “The lead roles in “Annie” are all being played by people who have never been on the NTC stage before,” said Daniel. “Fireman Scott is an example. The entire cast is having a wonderful time. At the rehearsals there’s nothing but laughing and joking.” “I love the fact that we’re not seeing the same people again and again. We hold ourselves to a high standard. We basically have a show a month, including summer. Not a lot of local theater groups want to push themselves that hard. The fact that people are coming from the north side of Atlanta to audition says something about the quality of the shows we’re doing. The actor playing Daddy Warbucks drives in from East Point and was willing to shave his head for the role.” Tickets are on sale now for the 9:00 am “Breakfast with Santa,” held on Dec 14th. Along with eating a delicious breakfast and hobnobbing with the “Annie” players, you can get your picture made with Santa and take it home with you. NTC also offers a Christmas show for grownups. “Every Christmas Story Ever Told - And Then Some!” is not as family-friendly as “Annie,” but it will appeal to the more cynical among us. If you think Christmas is too much about maxed-out credit cards, long lines at checkouts, zero parking spaces, and one too many renditions of “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer,” this show is for you. “It’s a satire of all the silliness that goes along with Christmas,” said Daniel. “Trying to get more lights on your house than your neighbor has on his, arguing about whether to believe in Father Christmas or St. Nicholas or which reindeer actually work and which ones stay at home. There’s nothing left untouched. The show spoofs all the Christmas TV specials and traditions: ‘Rudolph,’ ‘Charlie Brown,’ ‘Frosty the Snowman.’ There’s a whole routine about ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘Miracle on 34th Street.’ There are even a bunch of gags about the Christmas tradition of hiding a pickle on the tree.” “Every Christmas Story Ever Told - And Then Some!” is a three-man show starring Daniel Lees, Josh Hendricks, and Jason Alexander and directed by Justin Jessel. “Three of these four are N.I.T.W.I.T.S. and therefore well -versed in improv,” said Daniel. “The script is open – the authors actually invite the performers to add material they may not have thought of. So – who knows what you’re going to get.”

CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Visibility (part 1 of 2)
The sense of sight is the one we use most often to determine what is going on around us when we drive our car. We rely on it to send us messages that things are OK, or that things are changing, that things are changing faster than you can respond, or that things have already changed and you have not responded. Then Crash! A sight and sound message that can also be painful and expensive. Since we are supposed to be in control of that 4000 pound weapon called a car, we must be able to see what is going on so we can react more quickly than the environment is changing. If we don’t or can’t, that environment will change and we won’t be able to react to it in time to avoid a catastrophe. We have to be able see that environment, see it changing, and decide what to do about those changes. If we can’t see adequately, we can’t make the right decisions. Any time we are not in complete control of that 4000 pound weapon, catastrophe is possible. Every time you are inside your car, operating it, you are look through glass. Glass is 100% transparent. It can also be 100% opaque, or anyplace in between. Since we must be able to adapt quickly to the constantly changing environment outside our car, the more we can see and see clearly, the better we will be able to adapt to change. We control this by assuring that the glass we have to look through provides us with enough visibility to see and react to that everchanging environment. That translates to keeping your glass (windshield, side windows, and rear window) clear enough to provide near 100% transparency. Back in the good old days we could rely on the friendly gas station attendant to check our oil and clean our windshield every time we got gas. Our culture has changed and
it is now our responsibility as the vehicle operator to perform these simple but vital tasks. Every selfservice gas station provides us with the equipment to wash our windshields, free of charge. Every time we pump our own gas, it takes enough time for us to clean the windows while we wait for the gas tank to fill. A windshield covered with dirt, bugs, and streaks on the outside is pretty obvious, but also realize that glass has an inside surface that is subject to visibility impairment as well. Also, understand that just having the swath of clean glass that the windshield wipers provide is usually not good enough. Either use the gear at the gas station or create your own glass cleaning station and carry it with you or keep it at home. Use it to keep all your glass surfaces sparkling clean and your visibility adequate. Is that clear?

DID YOU KNOW?
The Coweta Shopper mails to 50,000
That’s right. The Coweta Shopper direct mails to 50,000 deliverable household and business addresses in the county every 15 days. The Coweta Shopper uses a “Zoned” approach via the U.S. Postal Service when tackling its delivery to the county. We’ve divided Coweta into 3 zones – A, B and C. And each week, approximately 16,500 of our publications reach households and businesses in a respective Zone. Zone A is the downtown Newnan area,
plus SummerGrove, Avery Park, Lake Hills, Lake Redwine and Arbor Springs. Zone B is the Highway 34 East corridor to Fayette County, including White Oak and Thomas Crossroads. And Zone C reaches our municipalities – Senoia, Grantville, Moreland, Sharpsburg, Sargent, Turin and Palmetto plus other parts of the county. The power of direct mail is strong and helps The Coweta Shopper reach an impressive 97% penetration rate for the entire county. Let those numbers work for you.
SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Scammers Emboldened; Seniors Are Target The U.S. Senate has a Special Committee on Aging, as well as an Aging Fraud Hotline. While it handles any type of complaint about fraud against a senior, it’s been especially busy lately because of Obamacare, also known as Affordable Care Act. The scammers are out there, and they’re targeting seniors. The committee’s new press release lists some tricks scammers might use to cheat you: •
If you have Medicare, you don’t need to buy Obamacare, period. If someone tries to sell you a policy knowing you receive Medicare, it’s illegal.
The scammers will try to get you to disclose personal information, such as your Medicare or Social Security number, or your bank account number. With even some of that information, your identity can be compromised and your savings stolen.
Scammers can show up at your door, or might phone you or send you email. They might pretend to just verify information, hoping you’ll correct them with the right information.
Hang up on anyone who calls and says they’re from Social Security or Medicare. They will never call you, unless you’ve made arrangements with them in advance.
Medicare open enrollment ended on Dec. 7, but scammers likely will say that “something” went wrong with your enrollment information, and they need to get it again from you.
The Aging Fraud Hotline can help with any number of issues related to fraud against seniors: identity theft, Medicare, retirement savings, phone scams, Social Security and more. If you need to file a complaint, call it toll-free at 1-855-303-9470. There’s also a mail form on its website at www.aging.senate.gov. Click on the Contact link and fill in the blanks. To contact Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE. To report identity theft, call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-438-4338 or go online to www.ftc.gov/idtheft. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to email@example.com.
