ell, the county fair is in town this week, and depending on how you look at it, you can’t wait to get there, or you may just want to leave town for the week. I say, “Go and have a great time!” There are rides which are appropriate for small children as well as those “Scary” things that turn you upside down and sideways fifty feet off the ground. Exhibits include cows, sheep, chickens, ducks and other “rare” species not normally seen by city dwellers. There are tractors, automobiles, remote control airplanes, fire trucks and other items of interest on display throughout the grounds. And don’t forget those Teddy Bears and prizes which are so “easy” to win! If you’re young, go and enjoy the heck out of it. If you’re old, go anyway; walk around and rekindle some

The Coweta Shopper is a popular and effective advertising guide mailed weekly to 16,300+ homes and businesses throughout Coweta county. old memories. The Kiwanis club has sponsored the local fair for as long as I can remember – I believe it started in 1948. “In 1971”, says Allyn Bell, “We made $5,000 which we gave to local Coweta County charities”. In 1988, when I was Kiwanis president, we were able to give away about $32,000, then an unheard of amount for a civic club to give. As many as fifty thousand people may visit the fair this year, spending at least twenty dollars each. “That’s a million dollars!” Although a lot of this money leaves town with the carnival, Kiwanis has made upwards of $150,000 a year, most of which is put right back into the good works of our community. It all started with the Newnan Kiwanis Club, however, there are several Kiwanis Clubs now in our community to share in the work and the giving. It takes a lot of volunteer help to serve that many folks!

FAIR

But the young people, who are the ones really enjoying the fair, are not really thinking of the logistics of operation, or the money it gives to the community. They’re there just to have a great time with their friends and family. As I write this article, I can still sense the smell of the cotton candy, the sounds of the rides, the music, and the “screams of joy” coming from excited people on exhilarating rides. It was a big deal in those times and I looked forward to it every year. Later, I was able to enjoy it with my own children, who now take their children. I suppose the fun could go on for generations. Although there are always some downsides to any event with that many people, our fair is a safe, well run event which provides a great deal of joy, as well as funding many of the charitable organizations here – at least $1,000,000 just in the past ten years. “Wow!” So, if you haven’t tried it, do so. If you have, I know you’ll be back again this year.

Golf Benefit for Zack Farr Saturday, October 1 Employee

Theo Whitten

Coweta-Fayette EMC

My name is Theodoshia Whitten – my friends call me Theo. I was born and raised in Fulton County but moved to Coweta County in the summer of 1989 with my husband, and best friend of 30 years, Marty Whitten. We have four wonderful children and seven grandchildren. I joined Coweta-Fayette EMC in 1993 as a meter reader and started getting to know people here. In 1999 I was promoted to customer service representative. Now they are not just people of our community, but many have become good friends and good people whom I enjoy helping and working with every day. I have always been a “people person” and I really love to talk. I believe this was my calling here at EMC. My hobbies include swimming, fishing, and walking, and I love the beach. I am proud to be a part of the growing community I call home, located here in Coweta County. Publisher’s note: I have known, and worked with Theo for many years. She is always friendly and helpful, and makes me feel like I’m her most important customer. But then again, she makes everyone feel that way!

“Thanks Theo”

2 p.m. at Orchard Hills. Trophies, Prizes, Silent Auction. Zack, 32 years of age, had a brain aneurysm and stroke. His surgery lasted 10 hours, and he was in a coma for 5 1/2 weeks. More surgery and rehab work to come. Needless to say, the bills are adding up. Zack has no insurance. Come help him out.

Meet Vickie Houston “A Taste of Homemade” Some folks work at a job just to make a pay check – a living. Others are fortunate enough to work at something they really like doing. Vickie Houston is in that second, that “Fortunate” group. She absolutely loves what she does, and it shows! Vickie and her husband, John, relocated in Coweta County about six years ago. John is retired from Superior Rigging and Vickie was operations manager with Sam’s Club. She started cooking and baking as a hobby and has wanted to have her own business for 25 years. “I knew God had given me a talent for baking”, says Vickie, “and I decided in March of this year that I would step out in faith and make the change.” On July 19th, Vickie had her opening day – the Grand Opening of “A Taste of Homemade”. “Everyone told me this was not the time to start a new business, as the economy is still limping, but I felt that mouth watering baked goods and friendly service would, perhaps, make up for that”. Located at 22 Perry Street, just off the Court Square in Newnan, her bakery-café serves some of the most delicious cakes, pies and other desserts you can imagine. Vickie of of“I appreciate every customer fered me lunch the day of our interview and and want to give them the served some of the best chicken salad I have best possible friendly service ever tasted. As I was leaving she gave me and fresh, delicious food.” a sack of baked goods to take home along with a sandwich for my wife. After eating ~ Vickie them, she said, “This woman really knows what she’s doing!” And it’s not just the good food that makes this place special, but the attitude of the owner. Her face seems to “gleam” with pride, and I think it’s because of the confidence she has in her ability to serve great food. “I appreciate every customer and want to give them the best possible friendly service and fresh, delicious food.” Vicky makes you want to come back again. She will also be offering to package and deliver her baked products with a nice note for those friends and customers on your Christmas list. Special homemade wedding and birthday cakes can be made just the way you want them. You can call her at 770-252-7800. So, if you just want to stop in for a cup of coffee and a muffin, have lunch, or take home a box of great tasting baked goods, visit A Taste of Homemade. Vickie will be smiling when you walk in the door - you’ll be smiling when you taste her food!

House Hunting and Children’s Story ... What do they have in common?

www.whiteoakhair.com Remember the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? One chair was too small, the next chair was too big and the last chair was JUST RIGHT! Buying a home is a lot like that. For example, Mr. & Mrs. Buyer are relocating to another town with a job transfer. They have sold their previous property, have money for a down payment, closing costs, moving expenses and have the required amount of reserve money that the mortgage company has required for unexpected emergencies. There are 3 houses on their list of houses to consider in the area where they want to live:

House A: Fixer-Upper. Needs repairs, updating and an over-all “facelift”, however, meets their needs as far as size, location and school district. It’s going to require time, expense and expertise that Mr. & Mrs. Buyer don’t have. House B: Beautifully Decorated! and located just down the street from House A, has been professionally decorated for the current home owner. The rooms have been painted and wallpapered in the home sellers favorite colors, the children’s rooms have beautiful murals painted on the walls with princesses and favorite super heroes. The flooring, although beautiful, is light in color and the buyers have 3 teenagers and 2 dogs. To make the house work for Mr. & Mrs. Buyers family, everything will need to be changed to go with their current furnishings and families needs. The house will need to be repainted, new flooring installed and the children’s bedrooms will have to be changed to suit their teen age children. Again, another property that will require time and expense that The Buyers do not have. House C: Properly Staged with a Buyer In Mind! It’s in the same neighborhood as Houses A & B, it has been professionally prepared and showcased to appeal to a broader amount of buyers. The walls are freshly painted with neutral colors that will go with Mr. & Mrs. Buyers current furnishings, the flooring is family and pet friendly, everything from the countertops, to lighting and bathroom fixtures has been updated to current styles. The family can move right in and begin their life in a new town without having to do one thing to this house. The message of this story is to understand that whether your house needs updating and repairing, or has been beautifully decorated and it should be in an issue of House Beautiful, they both require the same amount of work for a buyer to make it their own . Someone is going to have to spend time and money to make them ready for a buyer to move right in. If you CAN find a buyer that is willing to make the needed changes, the offer will be much lower than it would have cost you to make the changes yourself. So, go ahead and save yourself the frustration of low ball offers or too much time on the market and make your property “Just Right” for a buyer. For more information on making your property “Just Right” for buyers, contact...

The main characters in “Speech and Debate”, Solomon portrayed by Angel Escobedo, Diwata portrayed by LaKyrta Hamilton, and Howie portrayed by Christian Pollak, don’t fit any where in the social world of high school. “All three come at the club idea from different perspectives,” said Director Spencer Jordan. The three teenagers have very different reasons for getting involved with a Speech and Debate club. Diwata hasn’t had an opportunity to perform in the high school theatre department, and she hopes the club will be her ticket to fame and fortune. Solomon doesn’t want the club, but it seems to be the only way he can fulfill his ambition to write about controversial subjects. Howie, who is openly gay, wants to use the club to form a gay-straight alliance. These three outsiders find their way into a world that parents and teachers have been trying to shield them from – even while giving them all the tools they need to get there. Is this a “family” show? “It depends on the family,” said Artistic Director Paul Conroy. “There are issues in this play that some parents may not want to discuss. But I hope that parents who bring their teenagers will find the play a means of opening a dialogue with them. The reality is, if children understood that issues such as sex, drugs, and dating violence were not taboo subjects, and that they could talk to their parents about them, then they would have a better chance of avoiding the things their parents desperately want to shield them from.”’ If you have questions regarding the content of this or any NCTC show, email Artistic Director Paul Conroy at paulpatrickconroy@yahoo.com. Remaining dates for “Speech and Debate” are Sept. 29, 30, and Oct. 1 at 8:00 pm and Oct. 2 at 3:00 pm. Newnan Community Theatre Company is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue. Dog owners and lovers, plus their furry, fourlegged friends, are invited to participate in the Annual Doggie Dash, a major fund-raising event benefiting the Georgia Heartland Humane Society. This 3K (1.86 mile) walk meanders through the shady trails of Shakerag Park and will provide a one-of-a kind opportunity for you and your pet to enjoy early Halloween festivities together. Registration begins at 9:30am and the walk starts at 10:30am. The registration fee is $10 per walker. Adults, children and their doggie companions are encouraged to show off their Halloween finery during the walk, and then join us for the Costume Contest at 12:00am. There will be a variety of retail and service vendors on hand, a live Disc Jockey playing your favorite tunes, “Pupcasio” – paw painting for dogs, fantastic door prizes and ghoulishly good snacks and treats for humans and dogs alike! The last Doggie Dash event will end at 2:30pm. 100% of all the money raised will go towards the medical treatment and care for the animals in our foster program care. Each walker that raises or donates at least $35 will receive a specially-designed Doggie Dash T-shirt and doggie bandana, plus become eligible to participate in the drawing for door prizes. All dogs attending this event must have a current rabies tag or proof of a rabies vaccine and be kept on a leash. All pet owners are responsible for their pet clean up. Bulbs The first official day of Spring will be Tuesday, March 20, 2012. For us, in the lower South, Spring will begin to arrive earlier. The first signs will come with out late Winter / early Spring blooming trees and shrubs such as the Star magnolia, Winter-hazel, Japanese quince, and Forsythia. If such as these are the breath of Spring, then surely bulbs are the heralds of Spring. Early bulbs such as Scillas, Crocuses, Snowdrops, Winter aconites, Grape hyacinths, and Chionodoxas combine with Tulips and Narcissus. These go well with hellebores, bleeding heart, early iris, violas, and columbine, forget-me-nots and pale phlox. Some gardeners avoid the small bulbs and don’t like having to leave foliage on daffodils. Small bulbs can be planted among ground covers like ivy or thyme. They can be placed under small deciduous trees and shrubs where they need not be disturbed. Daffodils look wonderful in large naturalized drifts. Another method is to plant them in the middle foreground of the flower border. Other plans (foliage and blooms) coming up later in front and behind will hide maturing foliage. Plant bulbs in groups or masses - not scattered here and there in borders. Select a few types rather than many varieties. In the lower South tulips will need pre-cooling and should be treated as annuals. To plant bulbs plan for excellent drainage. Allow about four large bulbs or eight to nine smaller bulbs per square foot of space. Bulbs prefer a neutral soil pH but will tolerate a slightly acid soil. Amend heavy clay soils. Fertilize Fall and Spring with a 4-10-6 bulb fertilizer. Allow the foliage to mature and die down naturally - don’t tie it, braid it, or cut back early. Bulbs should be planted in the Fall after soil temperatures have cooled. Be sure to plant at proper depths. Excellent deer and rodent proof bulbs include: Daffodils, Chionodoxia, Galanthus, Muscari, Scilla, Anemone, Hyacinthoides, Allium, Garlic, Camassia, Puschkinia, Dutch Iris and Fritillaria. Blooming later, Leucojum is also deer and rodent proof. Its advantage is that it is also moisture tolerant unlike other bulbs.

“It is a greater act of faith to plant a bulb than to plant a tree.” --Clare Leighton
