eing a native of Coweta County, I used to think of our community as either a laid back small town or a fast growing city with its growth and traffic problems. I now understand it’s much more than that. Coweta is becoming an ideal place to live, work and enjoy a good quality of life. It really does have a lot to offer not available in other areas.

The Coweta Shopper is a popular and effective advertising guide mailed weekly to 16,300+ homes and businesses throughout Coweta county. We have successfully served the Coweta county area for over twenty years with our consumer-oriented guide consisting of a wide variety of retail and service advertisers, along with classified advertisements.

Our office is located on the corner of Hwy. 29 South & Pine Road

Office Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9 - 5.

Our community now seems to be an ideal mix of city life, with its’ shopping, dining and recreational opportunities, along with sleepy little rural pockets of life the way it was. There are small counties in rural areas which are alluring for their relaxed life style, but have no opportunities for major shopping, dining, etc. Then there are the big cities with more than enough places to part with your money and meet most of your needs. Coweta, however, has a unique blend of big town opportunities along with small town attitude. Think about it. We have several excellent golf courses, the new Chattahoochee Bend state park, Dunaway Gardens, a relatively new fair grounds and a location for the Powers Crossroads Festival. There Coweta is becoming an ideal are several civic clubs just waiting for place to live, work and enjoy your membership and involvement. Educational opportunities include West Geora good quality of life. gia College, Brewton Parker College, West Georgia Technical College and our Central Educational Center, with more on the way. Our school system includes well run public and private facilities. More than a hundred churches offer varied styles of worship. You can see a play at the Newnan Community Theatre Company, attend a concert at the awesome Centre for the Performing Arts or hear a local jazz band at the historic Wadsworth Auditorium. There are places to eat, from fine dining to great tasting burgers and dogs. You can see most any current movie, buy a car, or shop for just about anything and everything you need or want without leaving the county. We have very good medical facilities with more on the way, and our excellent daily newspaper keeps us informed.

But that’s not all. Where else can you find all these things and still see a farmer cutting his hay field or feeding the cattle? In Turin, there is a good old fashion “Tractor Pull” and show every year. Local farmers wearing old jeans or “overalls” bring their tractors directly from the barn or field to participate. (Don’t let those overalls fool you. Many of these people can buy and sell me ten times!) Rural churches still have Homecoming and “dinner on the grounds”. And you can sometimes still see laundry drying on the line behind a house. Kids (and adults) play softball and there are always a few guys at a country store standing around the back of a pick up truck talking about fishing or hunting. (Actually, there is usually nothing in the truck – it’s just something to lean on!) So, there’s something for just about all of us living in Coweta County to keep us informed, supplied, involved, connected and just plain happy. I really enjoy living here and I bet you do, too. From now on, I’ll be calling it “Coweta: the County of Opportunity”

THE KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis A Chicken in Every Pot With the political season under way, with its political promises, I’m reminded of a famous old political slogan, about “a chicken in every pot.” While the quote is often attributed to President Herbert Hoover, its origin is thought to be from King Henry IV of France. In the 17th century, he reportedly said that, “I want there to be no peasant in my kingdom so poor that he is unable to have a chicken in his pot every Sunday.” The Republican Party expanded the saying during the 1928 presidential campaign in an advertisement that promised “a chicken in every pot and a car in every backyard, to boot.” While modern-day promises have changed somewhat, it’s still a wonderful thing to come home to a pot full of flavorful chicken. If you’re the one responsible for the cooking, that could be a problem -- unless you use a slow cooker to make that meal. Slow cookers use a low temperature to cook foods and retain moisture. They generally operate at 170 F to 280 F. This might seem too low to be safe, but in fact, the slow cooker’s direct heat on the food, long cooking time and the steam pro-

My recipe for Sweet and Sour Slow-Cooker Chicken contains easy convenience ingredients and is a complete and delicious meal in a pot ... and that’s a promise!

2. In small bowl, combine sweet-and-sour sauce, cornstarch and ginger root or powdered ginger; and stir until well-blended. Stir into chicken mixture. Add pineapple chunks; stir gently to mix.

Remember the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears? One chair was too small, the next chair was too big and the last chair was JUST RIGHT! Buying a home is a lot like that. For example, Mr. & Mrs. Buyer are relocating to another town with a job transfer. They have sold their previous property, have money for a down payment, closing costs, moving expenses and have the required amount of reserve money that the mortgage company has required for unexpected emergencies. There are 3 houses on their list of houses to consider in the area where they want to live: House A: Fixer-Upper. Needs repairs, updating and an over-all “facelift”, however, meets their needs as far as size, location and school district. It’s going to require time, expense and expertise that Mr. & Mrs. Buyer don’t have. House B: Beautifully Decorated! and located just down the street from House A, has been professionally decorated for the current home owner. The rooms have been painted and wallpapered in the home sellers favorite colors, the children’s rooms have beautiful murals painted on the walls with princesses and favorite super heroes. The flooring, although beautiful, is light in color and the buyers have 3 teenagers and 2 dogs. To make the house work for Mr. & Mrs. Buyers family, everything will need to be changed to go with their current furnishings and families needs. The house will need to be repainted, new flooring installed and the children’s bedrooms will have to be changed to suit their teen age children. Again, another property that will require time and expense that The Buyers do not have. House C: Properly Staged with a Buyer In Mind! It’s in the same neighborhood as Houses A & B, it has been professionally prepared and showcased to appeal to a broader amount of buyers. The walls are freshly painted with neutral colors that will go with Mr. & Mrs. Buyers current furnishings, the flooring is family and pet friendly, everything from the countertops, to lighting and bathroom fixtures has been updated to current styles. The family can move right in and begin their life in a new town without having to do one thing to this house. The message of this story is to understand that whether your house needs updating and repairing, or has been beautifully decorated and it should be in an issue of House Beautiful, they both require the same amount of work for a buyer to make it their own . Someone is going to have to spend time and money to make them ready for a buyer to move right in. If you CAN find a buyer that is willing to make the needed changes, the offer will be much lower than it would have cost you to make the changes yourself. So, go ahead and save yourself the frustration of low ball offers or too much time on the market and make your property “Just Right” for a buyer. For more information on making your property “Just Right” for buyers, contact...

Meet Vickie Houston “A Taste of Homemade” Some folks work at a job just to make a pay check – a living. Others are fortunate enough to work at something they really like doing. Vickie Houston is in that second, that “Fortunate” group. She absolutely loves what she does, and it shows! Vickie and her husband, John, relocated in Coweta County about six years ago. John is retired from Superior Rigging and Vickie was operations manager with Sam’s Club. She started cooking and baking as a hobby and has wanted to have her own business for 25 years. “I knew God had given me a talent for baking”, says Vickie, “and I decided in March of this year that I would step out in faith and make the change.” On July 19th, Vickie had her opening day – the Grand Opening of “A Taste of Homemade”. “Everyone told me this was not the time to start a new business, as the economy is still limping, but I felt that mouth watering baked goods and friendly service would, perhaps, make up for that”. Located at 22 Perry Street, just off the Court Square in Newnan, her bakery-café serves some of the most delicious cakes, pies and other desserts you can imagine. Vickie of of“I appreciate every customer fered me lunch the day of our interview and and want to give them the served some of the best chicken salad I have best possible friendly service ever tasted. As I was leaving she gave me and fresh, delicious food.” a sack of baked goods to take home along with a sandwich for my wife. After eating ~ Vickie them, she said, “This woman really knows what she’s doing!” And it’s not just the good food that makes this place special, but the attitude of the owner. Her face seems to “gleam” with pride, and I think it’s because of the confidence she has in her ability to serve great food. “I appreciate every customer and want to give them the best possible friendly service and fresh, delicious food.” Vicky makes you want to come back again. She will also be offering to package and deliver her baked products with a nice note for those friends and customers on your Christmas list. Special homemade wedding and birthday cakes can be made just the way you want them. You can call her at 770-252-7800. So, if you just want to stop in for a cup of coffee and a muffin, have lunch, or take home a box of great tasting baked goods, visit A Taste of Homemade. Vickie will be smiling when you walk in the door - you’ll be smiling when you taste her food!

In the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes.

October is breast cancer awareness month. In the United States, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes. Eighty percent of women who are diagnosed do not have any reported risk factors, other than being female and aging. Common risk factors may include family history, race and ethnicity. The keys to surviving breast cancer are regular screenings (breast self-exams and screening mammograms) and early diagnosis. Screening mammograms are covered by most health insurance plans and are recommended for women over age 40. Ranked in the 99th percentile based on recent Press-Ganey surveys, the Piedmont Outpatient Center provides a comfortable, spa-like atmosphere for patients. Excellent care provided by staff members is coupled with amenities such as a private dressing suite, robes, refreshments and comfortable seating areas. The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center was recently awarded a three-year term of accreditation in breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsy, as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). It is also ACR accredited in mammography. No physician referral is required, however it is required that women being screened have a current physician to receive screening results. Patients should bring picture ID with them to the screening.

My name is Theodoshia Whitten – my friends call me Theo. I was born and raised in Fulton County but moved to Coweta County in the summer of 1989 with my husband, and best friend of 30 years, Marty Whitten. We have four wonderful children and seven grandchildren. I joined Coweta-Fayette EMC in 1993 as a meter reader and started getting to know people here. In 1999 I was promoted to customer service representative. Now they are not just people of our community, but many have become good friends and good people whom I enjoy helping and working with every day. I have always been a “people person” and I really love to talk. I believe this was my calling here at EMC. My hobbies include swimming, fishing, and walking, and I love the beach. I am proud to be a part of the growing community I call home, located here in Coweta County. Publisher’s note: I have known, and worked with Theo for many years. She is always friendly and helpful, and makes me feel like I’m her most important customer. But then again, she makes everyone feel that way!

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger As mentioned in a previous article, the courts in Georgia have recognized that children are attracted or drawn to certain man-made hazards, and thus have created the attractive nuisance doctrine. This is an effort to protect children from their own curiosity. The attractive nuisance doctrine was developed to protect trespassing children from dangerous man-made instrumentality or machinery which naturally attracts a young child. The principle idea behind the doctrine is that the owner should anticipate a child would come onto the property because of the interesting nature of the machinery or man-made item, and the owner should take precautions such as erecting a fence or barrier to keep children away from the harm. The Supreme Court of Georgia has adopted a five (5) part test concerning the attractive nuisance doctrine. Summarizing, (1) the owner knows or has reason to know that the children are likely to trespass, (2) the owner knows or has reason to know the condition can cause death or serious bodily injury to such children, (3) the children, because of their youth, do not discover the condition or realize the risk, (4) the utility of the owner of maintaining the condition and burden of eliminating the danger are slight as compared with the risk to the children involved, and (5) the owner fails to exercise reasonable care in eliminating the danger or otherwise to protect the children. All five (5) of these requirements must be met or the owner would not be subject to liability. Furthermore, the attractive nuisance doctrine does not apply to children who is a guest on the owner’s property since the child is not a trespasser. Newnan High School Band Needs Your Help On behalf of the Newnan High School Band, we are asking for your donation to help with the following needs: replace our 1988 GMC Box Truck affectionately known as RABRO used to transport instruments and equipment to away games and competitions and purchase additional concert tuba and 8 French horns.

Ellie Farrington is NCAA Artist of the Month for September 2011 Each month the Newnan-Coweta Art Association names an Artist of The Month, which entitles that person to display art works in the Newnan City Hall. Below is the announcement by Newnan’s Public Information Officer Gina Lau Snider: Ellie Farrington is named Newnan-Coweta Art Association’s Artist of the Month for the month of September. Farrington moved to Newnan in 1987 from Maine and began taking oil painting classes from Tom Powers at the Newnan-Coweta Recreation Department. She returns to Maine each summer for a visit, but claims Newnan as her home. Farrington is known for her love of bright colors, as well as for her interpretation of the flowers she grows. Her beloved ocean, complete with the massive rocks found on the Maine coast, is also one of her favorite subjects. An active member of First Baptist Church, Farrington serves as teacher of an adult Sunday School class and a member of the VOE Choir. She is Coordinator of the Alzheimer’s Support Group for family members at Savannah Court Assisted Living and also ministers weekly to those with the disease. She has already signed up to lead a team in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 17 in Newnan.

The NHS Band relies heavily on the funds raised by the Band Boosters. Please be assured that 100% of your donation will go directly toward these purchases.

As immediate past President of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association, Inc., (NCAA) Farrington continues to serve on the Board.

The levels of sponsorship are as follows:

Farrington practices her skills regularly every Tuesday afternoon at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road. Sponsored by the NCAA, she points out there is no charge and anyone wishing to participate is welcomed. A visit to the NCAA website at www.newcaa. com will show some of the results of those Tuesday paint-ins!

“Propagating Shrubs, Trees and Plants from Semi- Hardwood Cuttings” Gardening Workshop September 24, 2011 Early fall is a perfect time of year to take cuttings from mature plants, shrubs and trees to propagate new ones. You can learn ‘how- to’ at the Coweta County Master Gardeners’ workshop. The workshop will be held on September 24, 2011, from 9:00 - 11:00 at the Coweta County Extension Greenhouse (located beside the Horse Arena at the Coweta County Fairgrounds). A workshop fee of $15.00 includes instruction by experienced Master Gardeners, all plant materials and supplies, and 12 newly propagated plants to take home. Master Gardeners will also provide one month of aftercare for the plants at the Greenhouse as an option. To attend the workshop you must register in advance. Please call the County Extension Office at (770) 254-2620 by September 19. The workshop fee will be collected on the day of the workshop.

Bulbs The first official day of Spring will be Tuesday, March 20, 2012. For us, in the lower South, Spring will begin to arrive earlier. The first signs will come with out late Winter / early Spring blooming trees and shrubs such as the Star magnolia, Winter-hazel, Japanese quince, and Forsythia. If such as these are the breath of Spring, then surely bulbs are the heralds of Spring. Early bulbs such as Scillas, Crocuses, Snowdrops, Winter aconites, Grape hyacinths, and Chionodoxas combine with Tulips and Narcissus. These go well with hellebores, bleeding heart, early iris, violas, and columbine, forget-me-nots and pale phlox. Some gardeners avoid the small bulbs and don’t like having to leave foliage on daffodils. Small bulbs can be planted among ground covers like ivy or thyme. They can be placed under small deciduous trees and shrubs where they need not be disturbed. Daffodils look wonderful in large naturalized drifts. Another method is to plant them in the middle foreground of the flower border. Other plans (foliage and blooms) coming up later in front and behind will hide maturing foliage. Plant bulbs in groups or masses - not scattered here and there in borders. Select a few types rather than many varieties. In the lower South tulips will need pre-cooling and should be treated as annuals. To plant bulbs plan for excellent drainage. Allow about four large bulbs or eight to nine smaller bulbs per square foot of space. Bulbs prefer a neutral soil pH but will tolerate a slightly acid soil. Amend heavy clay soils. Fertilize Fall and Spring with a 4-10-6 bulb fertilizer. Allow the foliage to mature and die down naturally - don’t tie it, braid it, or cut back early. Bulbs should be planted in the Fall after soil temperatures have cooled. Be sure to plant at proper depths. Excellent deer and rodent proof bulbs include: Daffodils, Chionodoxia, Galanthus, Muscari, Scilla, Anemone, Hyacinthoides, Allium, Garlic, Camassia, Puschkinia, Dutch Iris and Fritillaria. Blooming later, Leucojum is also deer and rodent proof. Its advantage is that it is also moisture tolerant unlike other bulbs.

“It is a greater act of faith to plant a bulb than to plant a tree.” --Clare Leighton
